I think him self actualizing that he's finally worthy of being in heaven (he always was allowed, Michael just put the fear into Lucifer that he wasn't), finally worthy of being God and most personally for him, finally worthy of love and Chloe is what kept him from not blowing up.

When he says "I love you" he finally accept that he loves her and he is worth of her and then he dies but I think he reborn in heaven again, and this is why he was able to go back to Earth.

I would've loved to have had Luci meet up with Fr.Frank,too..a man that had come to mean so much to him in the short time they knew each other...Lucifer *wanted* to hate the guy's guts bc he represented Dad to him...I have to say Fr.Frank truly epitomized loving your enemies, and blessing those who curse you.
His ultimate test was always to lift the ban itself by burning himself up for a greater (once he finds something of great significance for him to sacrifice himself for, which is chloe, his true love). It’s beautiful!

This was the second time Lucifer made the ultimate selfless sacrifice. The first one was willingly going back to Hell to protect not only Chloe but everyone from the demons and give up the love he finally got from her. That got him his Angel wings back. This time, he gave his life for Chloe to live and he chose her life over his knowing he wouldn’t survive doing so. That allowed him to finally come to the realization that he loved her. That act made him worthy to be bestowed with the power of God as opposed to being unworthy as the selfish rebellious son who tried to just take it. Long story short, instead of gaining the power of God to be worthy of Chloe’s love, making this sacrifice showed Lucifer that he truly loves her. Ironically, he became worthy and received the “Power of God” as a gift from the woman who is Lucifer’s “Gift from God”.
They saved a lot of emotions and blew them to hell( no pun intended) in the final two episodes of season 5 B. Man Dan's death, Chloe's "death", this, amenadiel's speech, Lucifer and Ela duet. So much emotion
But if he would have met with Father Frank, maybe there wouldn‘t be an opportunity for Dan to get out of hell, because Mr. Said Out Bitch faced his sins and is meant to be the first person Lucifer knows, who changed from hell to heaven....
I'd like to think that one of the guest appearances in the final Season 6, we know possibly about two, but one remains unnamed - a bit of a secret. I'm kinda hoping it's Father Frank from Season 1 Episode 9, acting as some sort of guide for Lucifer now he's taken his father's place as ruler/successor. Father Frank knew who Lucifer was - devil/angel - and didn't judge him or shy away from him, if anything Father Frank saw Lucifer as a sort of kindred spirit and related to Lucifer on many levels. Their section on Lucifer's piano was gold. Whilst Father Frank's death was unfortunate and devastating for Lucifer despite his denial, its worth noting that the final words of Father Frank dying in the Devil's arms is that "his father has a plan". Father Frank must have known this plan involved the Devil being redeemed and replacing his father. I don't see Lucifer as God as his father was God, Lucifer should make the role his father vacated, his own.
That was all so emotional and romantic. Makes my heart melt. But now if I think about it, couldn't Amenediel just grab the ring and bring it to Chloe? I know that for Luci to do that was an important step, and he surely wanted to be the one to bring her back, but normally people comes with practical solution - send someome who you don't expect to burn there :)
