Let us know in the comments who you think it would be, but here’s the thing; the TMNT creators have already answered that question, and it’s by far the darkest thing we could’ve ever imagined happening. The Last Ronin mini-series, published by IDW in October 2020, sees the creators of the Turtle-verse - Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird - tell an apocalyptic tale of death, revenge, and well, the last ronin of the Hamato Clan over 5 action-packed issues. This series takes place in the future and despite not being part of the official continuity, has already had a sequel announced at the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con. But who exactly is this master-less ninja? What is his goal? And why do we call it the darkest TMNT story of all time? I would've been disappointed if it had been anyone else. In most incarnations of TMNT, out of all the Turtles, Mikey had the most potential, but lacked focus which is why he wielded nunchucks So it made sense to me that he be the one. I get that many expected Raph, but his death makes sense as he was the strongest and especially headstrong. prone to outbursts particularly when it comes to protecting his family. him dying first was inevitable.
Finding out who the last ronin was was such a shocker the character did a complete 180 but considering how much he lost that would leave anyone angry and bitter at the world
honestly ALOT of stories tend to have mickey die last or be one of the last...
It is ironic that Hiroto, a man who fancied himself as immortal God and considered turtles as sewer creatures, was defeated in battle and died right in the drain of shit from sewer. Quite a worthy death for the last Oroku.
Him being in sewer drains no doubt made him lose his composure

But I mean him being covered in excrement and being flushed trough the toilet sewage definitely caught him off guard similar to how Daken, Deadpool joke about fagay comments but are only doing that to destabilize the ennemis the wrestler Adrian Street would also use sex as a weapon but in reality he was a happily married straight man
Being the youngest, Mikey never needed to step up as he had 3 older brothers to always take the lead in crises. Once he lost all his brothers including Splinter, he had no choice but to grow up in a hurry and become his own leader. He could no longer sit back and joke around. Brilliant story. Loved it from start to finish.
This is a very dark, harsh, and sad story, imbued with Michelangelo's grief and longing for all those he lost in the bloody war of two clans, which dragged on generations for too long. Splinter taught his sons to fight for honor, justice. In this comic, Mikey fights for revenge for everyone who was taken away from him: his family and clan. This is no longer the cheerful and positive turtle that we knew. Now it's an old turtle suffering from survivor syndrome. He is Ronin - a warrior without a clan, carrying the weapons of his brothers and obsessed with a single mission - to finish off the last descendant of Oroku. During the years of his wandering and loneliness, Mikey studied his father's book, through which he was able to master his philosophy and find spiritual balance. Thanks to his book, Mikey has developed his fighting skills to perfection: he has learned different forms of martial arts, adapt his body to any kind of combat, and masterfully wield every weapon of his brothers: katana, sai, tonfa, and Bo. And, by the way, you may notice one parallel. Mikey fight with Hiroto with brothers' weapons in the same order when they were killed. First Mikey stabbed Sai into Hiroto's arm - Raph was the first, who died in a bloody battle with Karai and Foot clan. Then he stabbed Leo's katana into Hiroto's stomach - he and Casey were killed in an explosion staged by Stockman. Then he beat him with a Bo - Donatello died together with Splinter in a cemetery in Japan, fighting with Hiroto's army. And only at the end Mikey used his nunchucks and after defeating Hiroto, he accepted his death with honor, completing his last path.
I like idea that they decided to make Michelangelo the Last Ronin. He was always youngest in family, who was often underestimated by his brothers because of his goofy and positive behavior, but Splinter always considered Mikey as talented and gifted son. This comic perfectly revealed Mikey from other side, as an old, tired, but strong-minded warrior who is ready to avenge his family and fight to the end.

This story was dark and sad, but the TMNT 2003 episode "Same as it never was" is even more so.
Mikey always was a very skilled turtle. He never was the leader type, strongest, or smartest. But he was an all rounder in terms of technique. He was a very skilled turtle. But never took it too seriously. This made too much sense as a comic

@@siege824s8 His potential is actually why Splinter gave him the nunchucks because they are the hardest weapons to master. Because you can do as much damage to yourself as you do to your enemies if you don't know how to use the nunchucks properly. Where the other weapons pretty much where stick the enemy with that side weapons.

"The darkest story..." Maybe, but... I've been a fan of the TMNT since they started, (yeah, I'm 'that' old,) and there are some other "dark" stories I fondly remember (from before they became "kid friendly",) but this really is a great story. I hope part two does it honor.

Fuck man. Seeing Mikey die at the end kind of broke me. This was such a dark, violent and brutal story while also being quite heartbreaking and tragic.
Never would I had thought in a million years to see the turtle who was full of life and humor turned into a bitter and resentful character. But that is the beauty of storytelling.
This was intense but also interesting. While all of the turtles were very skilled fighters, I think like most of the commenters here that Mikey out of all his brothers, had the most potential. Kind of similar to Gohan in the Dragon Ball series. But due to his goofy and more laidback personality, his potential was in the background over his brothers. This was a great change of pace and he ended up becoming a kind of reluctant teacher and ronin. I also liked that in a way, Mikey also took on some of his brother's personalities as well. What a badass.

One of the best comic series I’ve read in a long time.
When I found out it was Mike I wasn't surprised everybody seems to underestimate him due to his personality and it's nature but out of all his brothers combined HE IS the BEST FIGHTER each brother specifies in a trait Leonardo the most skilled and disciplined Raphael the strongest and ferocious Donatello the most intellectual and tech-based Michelangelo the most naturally gifted and raw talented fighter there was a reason why he was given the nunchucks think about it the most difficult and complicated weapon to wield and master and Mikey is able to wield those as easily as like they were a kid's toy
Dude ... Master splinter gave each turtle the opposite weapon to their personalities... Mikey was the most care free so he gave him nunchucks so he would take fights seriously ... It was to balance the fact that he wasn't as talented as his brothers and make him work twice as hard ... So shut yo mouth... And actually read a TMNT comic for once?

My first thought was "its gotta be Mikey. Thats the swerve".
The thing is I was surprised: Leo is the best fighter he takes the role seriously, whereas Michelangelo does not. Sure, the latter has the most "potential" but potential is not guaranteed. If all he does is play games and never take it seriously he suffers for it greatly. I myself have the potential to be a great engineer but that's not likely to happen either. There is a reason why Leo has the swords, the only weapon that can kill, and the biggest responsibility using said weapons. He has to be careful with them because one mistake and someone could die. Yes, Mikey's weapon takes years to master but nunchucks are a tool, and ultimately a crap weapon that has been glorified by Hollywood. Swords require discipline to use so as not to kill willy nilly and the fact that Leo got shafted for Mikey is disappointing. He spent his whole life working hard and becoming great only for Mikey to usurp him. Leo killed the original shredder and it should have been him that killed this one all his training culminates to this, all his insecurities as the eldest brother and leader fall on him as his brothers fell because of his mistakes and now he has the chance to make up for it. Seems fitting actually.

I gotta say, the trope of "last survivor of a group carries all of their fallen comrades' weapons" is one I really like. It works especially well here for keeping up the mystery of who the last turtle was, but it's also just a perfect mix of rule of cool and emotional.

As a huge Mikey fan, I love the dark turn of his disposition for the contrast. I wish TMNT projects returned to the tone of the source material. I remember all the seriousness and mature language weaved into that first film. At least as far as “kids” movies go. Too bad they’re more concerned with toy sales than appeasing long time fans who grew up on it. Ah, nostalgia.
Also, the ninjas look like Snake Eyes.
I read told it was Raphael and that the Turtles and Master Splinter were killed in an ambush. Raphael survived because he had gotten into yet another argument with his brothers and left the hideout shortly before. And that during the story he had to finally control his anger in order to exact his revenge
Its Mikey!!! He's always been the deadliest one, that's why Master Splinter gave him the nunchucks. Michelangelo knew how to fight like everybody else but the thing was everything was all fun for him everybody else is already serious. When Michelangelo snapped it was a done deal especially having the knowledge of knowing how to use everyone's weapons by the way only Michelangelo knows how to do.
Shortly after starting this video, I was literally about to comment that it would be amazing if Mikey was actually the last Ronin because of how goofy, care free, and positive he's always been. I'm seeing the comments now that are saying he's who they went with and that's so brilliant, what an impactful shift in character.
I recall coming across some random artwork, years ago, that showed, "The Last Turtle." It was a series of beautiful, and tragic, depictions of each Turtle, as if they were the last survivor of their brothers. The Last Ronin was a difficult read, I don't want to see these childhood icons go through so much pain, but it would still be fascinating, to me, to see the story told 4 or 5 more times, in a "What If" type of scenario. How differently would the story be if it was Leo that somehow survived, or Raph, or Casey, or Splinter? Like running a particular D&D module, with a different character sheet. The way each fight flows from one to the next would make for a sick brawler or beat 'em up game. I wonder what those Shredder's Revenge guys are working on, now.

If this was a show, there should be a good intro and it could begin with Mikey having trauma about all of his brothers and their deaths, and a good song plays, as Mikey is doing parkour, showing villains that he fights, showing Shredder, and showing clips from the show, and a final clip, which is also a spoiler of him fighting Shredder
Mikey becoming the last one is cliche. The goofball turned serious for vengeance over the loss of his family.
But then I also remember how much TMNT meant to my childhood, often cropping up even until just a couple weeks ago in conversation... Cliche as it might be, knowing the guys as much as I do, it's still incredibly emotional for me to see Mikey in this position.
If (if) saying this is cliché is supposed to be your idea of a valid critique counting against this comic, that's a pretty lame criticism. Literally all of fiction is cliche at this point. That's why there's this thing called "tropes..." And they're useful -- necessary, even.
They all would be cliche. Rahpael cuz everybody loves his badass personality. Donatello cuz he the smartest and would outsmart everyone else somehow. And Leo cuz he's the leader and most skilled and wields swords like Ronins do.
Logically I guessed Mikey would be first to die from uncalculated decisions and rush into attack without focus.
Definitely makes me think about the Dark Knight Returns, this animated or even live action word for word would be an absolute blast.

The choice for the last Ronin being Mikey was good for the character arc but I can also see his death being the most tragic if one of the other turtles ended up as the titular character. He could have went out in a real heroic and self sacrificing way. Kinda like a puppy dying.
cracking a one liner as he takes on the first handful of attackers, only to fall to the next several waves as he goads them all on. Sometimes in the heat of the moment, all you can do is say what comes to your mind...

Haven't read a comic this gritty and dark since the original comics. If they can animate this comic into a movie, it would be legendary.
It sorta makes sense Mikey is the last, granted Leo maybe the most skilled, Mikey uses what many believe is the hardest weapon to master if you can master Nunchucks then you can master any weapons.
I thought Ronin was Raph, He seems like He'd be the gruffest one to survive in such a story and it would be a small push for him actually use his weapons as tools of war. But it also shows how Horrible situations can change even the most playful and childlike heroes into vengeful warriors. It makes Sense for Ronin to be either Raph or Mikey. Mikey is the more shocking of the two but story wise it makes the most sense for that big of dramatic character shift after going through what he went through. I dig it.

The Last Ronin is basically a TMNT version of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns with traits of the movie LOGAN, Marvel's The Punisher, GOD OF WAR, and Rambo: Last Blood thrown in the mix.

No spoiler, but he is the most talented and naturally gifted of all the turtles, so it makes sense that he is the last one surviving. Also every other time he got serious, be it in the comics or in the series, he always kicked major ass.
The story is very dark and so twisted. None of us have seen this side of Michelangelo: A turtle with a survivor's guilt. This should comic series needs to be made into an animated movie.
To those of us that were kids when TMNT first came out, had every turtle action figure. This was amazing but hard to watch. It would be Micky that survived the longest
I always knew Mikey was different than the rest of his brothers. As a kid I had a theory that Mikey was the strongest of the team. He was always joking/never serious while still being able to keep up with his brothers. And if and when he chose to be serious hed be the one to worry about. This comic has validated some of my childhood playground theories. Thank you

I absolutely LOVE this series. This is unequivocally *THE BEST* _TMNT_ series we've gotten in _decades._ SO much better than what is currently being written/illustrated by current handler Sophie Campbell. No disrespect to her as a person, but it's clear that she doesn't understand (or more accurately, perhaps she just _doesn't CARE)_ what makes The Turtles so beloved to fans.
Campbell instead seems more focused on doing Furry based "Slice of Life" stories than TMNT fare. It's starting to feel like I'm reading a Ken Pender's based _Sonic the Hedgehog_ comic...i.e. complete with *NO ACTUAL* "Sonic" characters, and instead just filled with badly written fanfiction OC's who never remain in character from their established personalities. 😩
Imagine if Disney would've treated Star Wars with this kind of respect

Seeing the art of storytelling in this series, and seeing Mikey as the last Ronin blew my mind, I expected Leo or Raph. And how Mikey went in a way the route Bruce Wayne took to become batman, but in a different way was so brilliantly done. Honestly not in a million years I would never saw this series coming but Mikey being like the dark knight vigilante and last Ronin. Eastman and Laird did a fantastic job with this. And like a few others Saud it needs to be an animated film or animated series 100% I've always loved Michaelangelo in turtles since I was a lil kid. Right from the original cartoon. With technodrome krang etc. just amazing stiry

Have you seen it yet but before I look at the video. Me personally, I would think Donatello the leader of the turtles will go out first because of how discipline he is. He will literally be the last man standing, making sure his brothers made it out alive. then it would be Raphael, because he will get so upset that he will run back and try to help Donatello then Leonardo would have one of his gadgets to get Michelangelo out because he's the baby and no one wants to see the baby go out like that way but I can also see Michelangelo stepping in the way of Leonardo and Leonardo having no choice but to go to report back to Master Splinter if he's even still alive. sadly it sucks anyway you look at it. Well Donatello was the last ninja turtle in mirage continuity because of a short story found in the pages of plastron cafe issue 1 in a story called old times

Well Mikey is the Battle Nexus Champion, The Turtle Titan, member of The Justice Force, saved Silver Sentry, and survived a Post apocalypse future with only one arm and still kicked ass, so no doubt he is The Last Ronin

My first time looking into this story, i assumed the last Ronin was going to be raph or leo, im pleasantly surprised to see its Michelangelo. The most talented of the turtles, but also the happiest and goofiest.
