Martin's defence is not very convincing. The question was "so Martin we will win the Europeans in 2024, yes?"
The response " we hope so Jim".
There is the reason we will lose again under Southgate, we don't believe we can win.
I don't believe we can win under Southgate, but ask me the same question at any time and my response will be It's coming home.
Just like the last 3 competitions under Southgate......
The man is wholly average, at some point in an important game you have to gamble to win. Think ahead of the game. Southgate is unable to think like that.
His record on the choice of players and the timing of substitutions is not just bad, it's abysmal.
He is cautious to a fault, result we're always too late.

@@adebowaleademola-thomas3776 I wouldn’t say that’s developing, more that international managers don’t have the luxury of purchasing foreign talent to fill positions. Mac Allister started in that position purely out of luck that Lo Celso got injured before the tournament and Argentina had no other experienced option for that position. Griezmann has always been a player that has helped out his teams defensively ever since he first moved to Atletico, and with the injuries to Pogba and Kante the best option for France was to take advantage of that selfless work ethic. In regards to England, Southgate pretty much set up his best 11 and the team came up short against a better team.

@@gabrielmartinez4641 Mac Allister was shocked at being picked. Lo Celso plays a different game to Mac Allister tactically. Griezman had to be convinced to play that part because he hated that type of game, hence going to Barcelona. Scaloni had to prove his doubters wrong. He changed the tactics. Type of players selected for internationals. Built a team that doesn't rely totally on Messi, so that, Messi can roam around the play. That's tactical development 101.

In every tournament under southgate he has made the wrong decision at crucial points and some of them don't even make any sense like using sterling who's been away from the camp dealing with a break in. A competent manager would beat France in that game we had with them. Gareth has had enough time from 2016 to 2022 to win a trophy if he has to win it has to be with another country. The squad has to have a major shake up. Youth has to be the focus.

If we equate this to a company (here the FA) are in need of successful projects to restore the company back to commercial prominence (here win a trophy).
You set up a project head/leader and make available to the project the best resources the company can provide. Success is imperative. A close failure is that failure.
We have had three close failures, surely somebody has to held accountable. That accountability in this case falls at the feet of the person who has led and failed three times.
Why are we now putting trust in him to lead and probably fail again?

Coming from an outside perspective (Aussie) the rest of Europe and the world want south gate in, you have the most frightening pool of players and depth. It would be terrifying to face against if it was teed up with an elite manager who's a proven winner who knows the game. I feel like it's a real wasted opportunity on southgate tbh. It doesn't matter if the manager has to be English countries around the world all have international managers

Southgate and his yes men staff, between them somehow agreed that Sterling who had been away from the squad due to traumatic personal matters should be introduced before Rashford.
Saka was playing well enough to remain, and to frustrate all of us clear thinking football lovers, he introduces Grealish with a min to play???
Clever managers do that to slow the game down.
    Mind blowing.

Feels like we’re stuck in time, will southgate ever go🙄 we will be saying the same when we go out in the semi’s of the euros.

This Kewon with his tired arguments “ Southgate brought us to the semis, he brought us to the quarterfinals… “ but after 6 years and 3 tournaments England got Jack.
Mancini took over Italy and won the Euro, Scalini took over Argentina won them Cope America and World Cup, Dechamps took over France he brought them to the finals of the Euro and then won them a World Cup … it doesn’t take three tournaments and over 6 years.
For a coaches quality to show…

It’s deja vu all over again. The talk about Southgate having his favourites was all clear to see when he called on Sterling to get us out of a hole against the French.Sterling the man who had flown home because of the nightmare situation of the burglary. His mind could not have been in a good place but was called upon before Rashford, Grealish,Maddison toreplace Saka, who was arguably our best player on the night.
    Time for a change

When you’ve got managers like Thomas Tuchel available, keeping a cereal bottler like Southgate in charge, with arguably the best squad England’s ever had, is a travesty in my opinion.
He hasn’t beaten anybody of significance in 6 years and with the best England squad of my 40+ years lifetime.
This team needs a change in leadership PERIOD and if Southgate had any respect for the country, he would step down himself.

I completely agree. When for example you look at the Italia 90 squad you had 2 world class players in Gazza and Waddle. Then after that a clinical lethal striker in Lineker and other decent players like Platt and Beardsley. However the squad was thin. Robsons tactical genius helped us get to the semi final where we were very unlucky not to beat a great German team....Barca wont come calling for Southgate like they did for Robson.

I think England just wasted the best chance they will have of actually winning a world cup given how poor in terms of quality this one was and how objectively they had probably the best 11 and definitely the best squad.

Do we think that Belgium, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Holland are not rebuilding? England’s opportunity to win was between 2018-2022 and they failed. Saying that they will be better for the experience is a load of old tosh. These teams will be stronger in 2 years time than they are now. England will stay the same with Southgate. No chance in the next Euros.
