Gareth Southgate owes his legacy to the luck of the draw.
Imagine that England had tough teams in the last 16 or QF matches of each tournament..?
Morocco and Croatia are achieving...and if either of them make the final, Southgate must go.
I've also thought that.
Morocco and Croatia aren't flukes a lot of naysayers said they were, they won because they played with the mentality to win with a coach that knew exactly what the team was good at. For me the biggest disappointment wasn't Kane's penalty miss, it was how the team seemed dead after that. It wasn't like France was puttting up a defensive masterclass (although Lloris was really good), the English attack just seemed dead and tired in the last few minutes.
Imagine if he was managing in 2014. Like Hodgson he wouldn't have got out of the group either because there were 2 big teams in that group.
@@mazdakmina9493 👍100% agree and also in that Euro 2004 game v France David Beckham missed a penalty.
@@mazdakmina9493 Well we didn't finish top of our 2018 WC group under Southgate either but we still went on to have an easier draw facing Colombia and then Sweden.
Also Southgate has never been hit with bad injuries before a tournament or during one, something that certainly plagued Sven. He has been very fortunate in that respect.
My opinion is if he was managing England back in those days we'd still have probably gone out at the same stages, as he's proven in this era, he still can't beat the big teams in KO games, unless there is a home advantage.
Southgate bottled it. He always does. The momentum was in our favour after equalising, he should have been proactive with substitutions and gone for it. What does he do instead? He waits until the moment has gone and we've conceded, then takes off our best player, and tosses on Rashford and Grealish in desperation with seconds to go. Criminal.
Taking Saka off was a huge mistake. The French defence were panicking every time he got the ball.
Exactly right.. if southgate is so good why has he never managed a top champions league team? Even in the future he wont. Coz all the club chairman knows he is crap
Everytime France attacked for a prolonged period they scored. France was only in first year the entire game.
@@mh9tv He wouldn't even get a job in the Premier League.
Totally agree, youve got the 2nd best free kick taker and best crosser of the ball in the world in trent sitting on the bench, henderson was motm, he took the wtong players off, which is 1 thing, but he also got the tactics wrong as well, the world class teams play like that from the first whistle, not respct the opposition and sit back for 30 minutes. They werent allowed to play or get out of defensive mode until france had scored. A brazil legend recently said, england will win nothing whilst a coach choices to leave a player like trent out of the team and play defensive instead, if he was brazilian hed start every game, reminds me of my old team mate Cafu, cant remember which player it was but this was s world cup winner. His comment was not just about trent, that was just an example of the negative thinking he sees from england coaches, to worried about failing to actually take chances and win things. As klopp says, risk and reward, 3 out of 5 CL titles, every time trent and hendo played psg, with mbappe and neymar they do nothing, haha
Just the English man I wanted to listen to. Spot on Simon, always talk sense. It is about winning, Mbappe made it clear in his interview, France came to win the World Cup as their main objective. The English press built the whole encounter to be about stopping Mbappe forgetting the world champions despite their injury concerns have other dangerous world class players ready to hurt them.
If i were French, and the French team lost, there would not be a single referees decision i could or would complain about or question. This game opened my eyes to a level of corruption that would put cricket to shame! It was rigged, VAR and the ref did everything they could to delay / ignore clear cut decisions that manipulated the outcome.
@@minaminx Nonsense, got awarded 2 penalties and still lost.
@@LostSpider clearly you never actually played football. bless

@@LostSpider i stand by my statement
"We were the better side" we gonna hear this statement for the next year and half at least WTF
Surely the better side is the one that can find the back of the net the most? Yes, we had more possesion, but most of it was passing it around our own half and back towards our own goal! We cannot rely on Penalties and generous referee's to get our goals all the time. If players tried staying upright around the goal area instead of diving for a penalty, they may actually get a chance to kick the ball in the net! These players are getting paid hundreds of thousands a week, and demand our adulation. So get out there and start earning it!
Yep, same old pathetic England.
@@stevebird7265 Well said. the French left the ball to England, which was a mistake because they are not a great defensive team.
That's Sky Sports, BBC pundits & the Gary Neville, Gary Lineker crews who are going to say that. They are more concerned about Qatars human rights and lgbt BS than the country's football team

@MrAnotherworld23 those lot were up against formidable opponents we a not very good England team.. tit
Excellent awesome synchronicity of the kneeling of the knee. Well done lads.
@@anothersockaccount652lol How does losing against a TOP team make you mediocre? Again I ask you about the names I just mentioned, how do you classify them then?
Bang on Simon. Southgate has taken this team as far as he could and well done to him for that. Someone else needs to come in and bring the ruthlessness that this team needs to finally close out a tournament win. Not good enough with the talent this squad has. If you look at other teams like Argentina or Croatia, they don't have as much talent on paper but their coach squeezes every extra ounce from each player such that they perform, as a collective, above expectations. England players, on the other hand, seem to play at or below expectations. That comes down to the coaching and strategy.
Bang on mate that comment
Exactly. Southgate is very similar to OGS at man United. He brough the camaraderie and feel good factor but Southgate, like OGS is not a great tactician nor won a trophy at the top level as a manager. He has done a good job, now it time for someone more ruthless, who will get the team over the line.
The squad has improved the manager hasn't
i don’t think coaching makes you miss a penalty
Argentina have a better team then England tho
Why do people keep saying that England was a better side than France during the game, it's absolutely rubbish. They spent most of the time passing and holding the ball in their own half without creating that many really menacing chances, France on the other hand looked dangerous every time they got the ball and countered.
That's true
"Martin Keown's ridiculous wall chart" 😂
I know....insane lol.... last week when they were both on talk sport known actually mentioned "it could be a Ronaldo Messi final and what a mouth watering prospect that would be" Simon done this legendary grin and someone on the thread picked up on it saying " Simon laughing at Kevin and his wall chart"
Well i bet a lot on Uruguay to win World Cup.
Best comment 😂
France seemed like they could score everytime they wanted/needed
Exactly, English fans are deluded. They have a decent team, but compared to the rest, they are average.
And thats the deciding factor! France have proven world class game winners , where as England have a squad of over hyped players who nobody outside of the UK rates highly, for every saka or rashford or bellingham there will always be a better French, Brazilian, portuguese , Spanish young player out there , English media wont tell you that though ;)

Simon Jordan …has just explained how I feel about this World Cup,thank you.
Agreed Simon. So many similarities with 02 and 22 campaigns. In both, we had the game in our hands. But when it was in our hands, instead of a brave coach who makes the changes to win the game, they are passive. The cricket team are benefitting from a brave approach, with spectacular results. Gareth has took us from rubbish to good. But it's time for someone else to win us something, hopefully in my lifetime!!
That's not quite how I remember 2002. I know we went 1-0 but I seem to remember it was a pretty flat performance apart from that. This was definitely a more impressive performance, but unfortunately the same result
@@Klinsmann1985 In 2002 the English team was much stronger than the one now and had a much better match against probably the best Brazil of all time who lined up 3 golden balls at the same time, Rivaldo, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho and who had Kaka , Roberto carlos, and more... The match was very tight and the English almost took the Brazilians out if Rivaldo and Ronaldinho hadn't performed miracles on the pitch, especially Ronaldinho with his free kick but in short... In 2002 they were much better than your current team against a Brazil much better than our French team (yes I am French)
L'angleterre en 2002 a était la seule équipe qui a donné du mal à ce brésil injouable qui a gagné la compétition, tout le monde disait que c'était la finale avant l'heure tellement les deux équipes étaient fortes
@@jimmyboe889 I was more thinking about the way the two games panned out. It felt like Brazil won that game quite comfortably even with 10 men. (Admittedly it was a long time ago so obviously I don't remember it that clearly!) This match France were hanging on for a period so it seems more like a game England should have won. In comparing the two teams I think there is an element of legend bias there. You're talking about players long since retired so already part of folk lore. Not disagreeing with anything you said about that incredible Brazil side but don't sell your french boys short. They could become only the third team in history to retain the world cup, despite a number of key players injured, including current world player of the year! I think this generation of French players will go down as one of the greatest in history, and I wouldn't be surprised if this English team is one of your main rivals for the next two or three tournaments.
You will see England win something, don't you worry. UEFA Nations League B is not very prestigious, but when you're in England's position any title is worth collecting.

Simon on point. 24 games against opponents ranked in top 10 under Southgate and only 4 wins in those games...
Because he treats those games like league games , Southgate would rather have had 1-1 and lost on pens , because its an easier narrative than losing the game in extra time, so because of that outlook when we equalised he got us to hold rather than continue the all out attack, and France called his bluff

However in the fine margins, they have a manager in Deschamps who was proactive enough to make the right changes at the right time to get the job done. Southgate can't do that. We said exactly the same when Mancini's Italy side beat us in the Euros Final. Southgate is a safe pair of hands, he rebuilt the team and gave us good foundations. But he'll never take us further
France barely changed - played dembele long who is useless
we lost to France. 2-1. Anybody would think we had lost to China 10-0 the way some fans and pundits are goin on.
The script was written from the minute we knew we would face the French, it was all about how would or could we cope with Mbappe, all the focus was on Walker v Mbappe.
Not saying don't mark him, not saying whenever possible double up on him, and definitely not saying get a challenge in on him so he knows he is in a game.
But there has to be balance, otherwise as 'we' proved we go into a vital game on the back foot, if we had scored first, we wouldn't have gone for the second or third.
The cricket team has shown what happens when someone is brave enough to say, just ho out and play, show what you can do, and unless you make a complete and utter balls up, your in the team for the next game.
The subs with the exception if Mount were pointless, Sterling shouldn't have gone back, far too much on his mind, Grealish far too late, and overloading one wing with Grealish and Foden, not something Southgate has figured out
The is a reason Jose, Pep and klopp are different.
They dont teach players football.
They teach the players how to Win.
Add Ancelotti and TT in this list.
These 5 are the one England NT team needs to overcome the biggest mental Block.
To be England manager one must have an English passport.
@@marksmarsh2039 oh capello had english passport never knew that.
Yes and Eriksson i know but we have moved on from them times. NOW the manager must be English. That is what i meant to say
Pep and Klopp are ofcourse great managers
if the Chelsea manager can get his act together he is in with a great chance
Simon spot on again. Best pundit by far.
Spot on Simon again!
Hang on a minute didn’t they score 2 goals against you from open play???
True, in the last 3 tournaments we have not beaten any top teams. We beat Germany in the Euro ‘s who were very poor as the world cups either side of the Euro’s have shown and we lost to Italy who failed to even qualify for the World Cup.
Maybe we're not a great team.
I would say denmark were a top team but still trash history from us
Simon talks more sense than most of the ex professionals who are frankly too timid to call out Southgate on anything
Amazing Simon WE NEED TO WIN
Sat there with Martins Ridiculous Wall Chart....omfg 🙃🙃🤣🤣
Not a big England fan but I do follow the team. But as a big Arsenal fan the word ‘potential’ is haunting. We had so many sides that were labelled as title-winning sides in three years time or something but it never happened. I just hope England deliver the next Euros bc otherwise idk if they ever will win something.
If i were French, and the French team lost, there would not be a single referees decision i could or would complain about or question. This game opened my eyes to a level of corruption that would put cricket to shame! It was rigged, VAR and the ref did everything they could to delay / ignore clear cut decisions that manipulated the outcome.
@@minaminx 😂😂😂 COPE HARDER.

What happened to building the England team around Jack wilshere, how did that work out?
Great point .I expect Foden and Grealish to go the same way. I suspect Sterling’s international career is already in decline.Same happened with Theo Walcott.
In post match intterviews Siouthgate seems blasé about them throwing it away. wtf??
6:28 - "WE NEED TO WIN!!"
I like Simon’s take. Standards should always be high. People should stop accepting anything less than winning a trophy. England should be about winning a tournament.
But we haven't won one since '66...that's like saying Tottenham should be comparing themselves to City or Chelsea. We're talking about different levels here
@@Stinkmeaner420 Spurs don't have the resources of City or Chelsea, your comparison here makes no sense. It's more akin to Man City not competing for the league with what they have. The English league system is by far the best-funded in the world, and the clubs are the richest in the world with the best facilities and it's a large nation of football lovers. To have a record of 2 major finals with one win is appalling.
@@BigDoniel that's great and all that we have funding, but let's be serious. Where is most of the fundamental talent coming from? Cos it's not from England. Look at the hype that saka, grealish and foden get. None of them are world class, else they would be chased by real madrid and barca, along with the likes of vini jr, mbappe and håland. Yet the english media bigs them up so much. Even bellingham. Ffs, the boy is 19! Who's to say he don't end up like dele alli, yet he's already being touted as future England skipper. We need to face the reality of English football. We attract talent cos of the money, nothing more, nothing less
Great analysis totally agree
Simon always talks sense
Perfectly said as always Mr Jordan
At that level it’s about winning ruthlessly
Spot on again. Safegate will never win us a tournament, he’s had 3 attempts, I hope he now sees it’s time to go
Rashford should have been brought on way earlier, Kane offered absolutely nothing.
As soon as we scored we should have brought him on, we desperately needed pace
🤡🤡
Rematch the game 🤣
Kane is irremovable. That’s why Southgate has to go, he has too many favourites.
I have a great respect for Simon.
When the pre-Match talk was there in all TV Shows , most English commentators ( i mean those who supported England to win ) were more worried about the French attack , particularly Mbappe and Griezmann and they said much of containing the french attack for most of the time. Their projection of the English attack was only after speaking of the French attack . Some commentators even called for a penalty to decide the outcome. That means you placed the faith on Jordan or Pope to come to your penultimate rescue with an assumption that Lorris shall make the mistake , and the rest of 90 mins + Additional time were already decided to be on the defensive .
In contrast, the french, were confident of their attack . They always had the faith that Mbappe or Griezmann would find the nets
With a defensive mindset ends with securing a draw is the limit of victory , whereas , it is always a calculated attack , built on strategy of assault is the path to the victory .
Despite the fact that the french attack was superior and more decisive , England played fantastically well most of the game and gave in everything ,
But the french were more confident.
I think that confidence is going to multiply and is to be carried on till the end of the final.
Based on this confidence and the abilities , i say this before the event ; Look for the match of France vs Morocco. France is going to have the first goal and when the first goal has come for France , Morrocon defence is going to fall apart and a blood bath of goals is likely to follow .
Simon's right. We have progressed off the field (team image, comeradery etc.) but on the field we've not pulled off a single upset at tournament level...
Simon is a master of sneaking jabs at other people while making a valid point😅 ..genius !
"The French can't defend" lol
I agree. We should have got to the final in my view. Best/easiest chance we've had.
Agree with Simon everything apart from that Saka take. He’s the only one who is willing to take on his man and in most cases beats them or creates a chance.

Southgate needs someone to assist him in specifically managing the game and substitutions and reading the game because he seems to be good at everything except that and that's kinda important 😏
Great commentary, we can’t keep lauding ourselves and our national team for ‘doing ok’; at some stage they have to win against rated opponents, then we can cheer. (Even I, a naive and inexperienced football watcher, wondered at the time if Kane should take a 2nd penalty against his team mate. And his; let’s say it, appalling over-thought shot, was far worse than I feared. I only feared a good, or at worst, an easy save… ).
It's true,England have come a long way from their 2010 nadir to where they are contenders but it's time to make the talent and potential count and win a major competition like the example set by the Lionesses.
