Actually Southgate has experience managing elite football players in major international tournaments and even made the final of one of them. Some might say that has been his biggest job. Make sense?
That the same high class manager who failed to qualify for the 2006 World Cup? Same as Mancini. Both kept their jobs. As an English person, please explain to me how it's okay for continental managers to ride their luck through a European tournament, then not even make the next global one.

Comparing the English managers to the "Continental" ones is simply a joke, and I am a fan of English football btw. Just think of the last English manager who won the Premier league or any major European league, when you find him think if you were alive when it happened...
Let’s see what Southgate has accomplished with England: World cup 2018: Finished 4, losing to Belgium Euro 2020: After fairly easy way to getting into finals, they face against an exhausted Italian team at Wembley. England scores a fast goal. Instead of trying to score more, they became passive and Italy took advantage of exhausted players and scored. Mancini made important subs to freshen up the squad unlike Southgate who deliberately made subs at 117th minute instead of 90th or even earlier just for the penalties and subbed players miss the penalties. World Cup 2022: Losing to a French squad that is on paper weaker than 2018 squad in every way. England’s squad choice and their inability to use the wings because of a lack of creativeness and playmaking capabilities ultimately ended the run. Foden was useless, Saka only got a penalty and that is it. You can blame the referee however you want, I am not a French fan, the amount of flopping in that game just shows how desperate the players were. There was no visible tactic. Harry Kane shouldn’t get the blame he rarely misses a penalty, and if you are a World cup contender, you shouldn’t be relying on penalties in the first place just like in the euros. This was on manager alone, if Morocco and Croatia can be in the top 4 teams in the world, why a “stacked”, “talented”, “generational”, squad gets eliminated in the quarter-finals? Also a reminder, England is in the Group B of Nations league, on par with teams like Wales, Greece, Albania, Iceland,Montenegro… And you still keep Southgate and wonder where do we make the mistake.
Hes absolutely deluded. Hes mental I think. He was a rubbish player now hes a crap coach..they should give it to someone who understands attacking football cos Southgates a crap defender.
When we played France, the missed Benzema, Kante, Nkunku, Kimpempe, Pogba. That’s like England missing Kane, Saka, Rice, Bellingham, McGuire. Let that sink in
@littlediablo, I take your point. France have had some great players in the last 30 years, which is why they'll have a chance to win their third World Cup tomorrow. Having said that, I think Giroud has played really well in place of Benzema. He hasn't been missed
He is tactically inept. I genuinely can't believe he's lasted as long as he has... Even prior to taking over England he was a poor manager. He took charge of a Middlesbrough side that had just finished second in the Europa League and relegated them in 3 seasons. He is and always has been the problem.
On the France game, ppl applaud Southgate playing attacking football, but I think France allowed us to do that and successfully counter attack us. Like they did well against Morocco. They just know how to win. Mark is right.
Let’s forget, for a moment, that Southgate is a questionable manager. He put out a good team for the game against France & I thought England did play well. The argument for me is not, “is Southgate a good or bad manager?” The argument for me is, “can England do better?” & yes, they can. I personally thought a few English players were unlucky not to receive a call up.
France have 2 blisteringly quick wingers so it makes sense to concede possession, stay organised and hit teams in transitions. Apart from the penalty which was just an individual mistake France looked comfortable, England did not 'dominate'.
@@IbrahimAli-po1hd not sure how many of them would have started tbh, England put a lot of pressure on them and had a great chance to equalise with the penalty, don't pretend they weren't trying
The sad part is Middlesbrough were actually a decent team when he took over. A year before he took over , they finished sixth or seventh in the Premier League and then went on to play in the UEFA cup final a few weeks before Southgate took over and they had a lot of good players . he took over and ended up getting them relegated and they’ve never recovered since.
@@mikeadams7904 yeah. He inherited a pretty good squad full of international players at boro. It just goes to show that the FA has no ambition to win the big trophies. Proper big countries like Brazil and Germany will sack their manager and have an inquest, as Mark said. It's about standards. Germany and Brazil have much higher standards, and that's why they'll win another World Cup before England will.
If Brazil actually win the World Cup in 2026 they’ll have won a World Cup in every year ending in an even number. One in 1970 (zero), two in 1962 and 2002 (two), one in 1994 (four), and one in 1958 (eight). If they win 2026 they’ll have done them all.
Mark is right England had a fantastic team and could have won the world cup had we had an adventurous manager with tactics France counter attack its their game we got dealt with by USA and were lucky to draw. Honestly such low standards at international level.
Many other teams are just as "fantastic" mate. There are at least 5-6 teams that match England or are better. As for the US game, it wasn't great but no team won all the group stage games. Mark calling for his sacking after that draw was ridiculous
@@martinhansen1278 look hero, i rate England team not so much there cb pairing. We saw how good, experienced managers can change a game in their favor in Van Gaal’s substitutions against Argentina. He realized it wasn’t working, and instantly with the subs, swapped formation and started playing more direct. It changes the game, instant impact. Southgate can’t use a bench as deep as that without shooting himself in the foot. That to me showed the difference in levels. One manager can use his bench effectively, the other cannot because he is tactically inept.
This sums up the FA: England get humiliated, utterly humiliated, by Hungary at home. At home!!!! They proceed to offer Southgate a contract extension. Can someone please, please, please explain this to me. Because I'm very, very confused right now.
I swear he plans the game out prior to the match and no matter what happens he sticks to it. If it works it works and if it doesn't we lose. Because he cannot or will not make changes depending on what is happening on the pitch.
Absolutely right that Hoddle, Robson and Venables were the best managers. That is because they played the best available players in the right positions, changed things when it was needed. had sound in-game management, and took some risks. Everything that Southgate doesn't do.
with southgate in, the talent and depth of countless players wont be utilised. picking favourites, a poor team sheet and substitutes is all you will get. its a huge shame for the talented young players who deserve more.
going to waste another golden generation on him, we will win nothing until he goes and we get a manager who uses the players in a more attacking formation.
Very much doubt he'll stay on after Euro 2024. By then a lot of this generation has many tournaments in them. A lot of young players. However, we don't know who the next manager is going to be when he does leave. Be careful what you wish for.

You can give a bye for 2018 (before that tournament nobody gave England a chance), but Euro 2020 and WC 2022, England should have been winning those and the reason they didn't is because the manager is incapable of making in-game decisions. I’m not an englisman, nor a fan of the english national team on the basis of their management. The crux of the issue facing English international football is simply that their managers never use the talent at their disposal to its full potential. English fans would be quite frustrated and understandably so. It might be an unpopular opinion, but the winners of the last 5 world cups have had managers who were able extract the best out of their squads in the big moments. France, Brazil, Italy, Spain, Germany and now Argentina have had managers who took risks! Southgate has never taken a risk in 3 major tournaments and England have not done anything beyond the expected. I hope for the sake of english football that this changes because the talent pool is world class and the fans deserve something to show for it.
I watch both cricket, football & many sports. The English Cricket team won the ODI World Cup (2019) & T20 Cup this year, and now play amazingly test cricket.I watch football thinking there is a lot more talent in England however am stunned by the amount of potential and then the outcome.I personally think Goldbridge’s opinion is bang on, I like Southgate just don’t want him managing England.
the revival of english cricket has been remarkable and it's down to the bravery of the three men at the top. we're going to play this way and we are going to give it to them. the england football team would scare the hell out of the opposition if they were managed properly.
France are likely to get rid of Deschamps for Zidane now (he has taken France to 2 WC finals with 1 win, 1 Euros Final and a Nations League trophy) where as the FA were begging Southgate to stay... shows how the FA have no real ambition to win anything. Deschamp showed the difference between him and Southgate with the Giroud and Dembele subs @35mins in a WC Final. Southgate would never in million years make such a bold move!
He didn't have the bottle to take Ivan Toney, a forward in form who had scored all 20 penalties he'd taken for Brentford, a guy with pace that Kane could only dream of having, that's maybe whilst Kane lobbied for him to stay on

Shouldve done what Roberto Martinez done, gave it a good crack. Pushed the Belgium to get 3rd great achievement, a great France team away from a shot at the Gold. This world cup he failed, he put his hands up and walked away admitting he'd done as much as he could do to the best of his own ability. Southgate should take that lesson in humility and use it.
Your comments on Sancho not being contacted about Southgate is spot on Marky. They've biased their data by selecting those players actually playing under Southgate. Wonder if Trent was polled? My biggest worry for the English team now? Well - he is staying - but he almost didn't (so he isn't entirely happy?). Everytime England loose a game now - the entire conversation is going to focus around Gareth and maybe leaving / maybe not being happy.... it will be like a concrete necklace for the next 4 years. Not surprised at all, the FA and the media have a habit of setting standards low. Take the medias adulation of Maguire for example. He's ok for England but the way the media talkabout him you'd think he's scoring harricks every week. It's like some sort of brainwashing exercise from 1984.

Here is the thing this team is completely different from those teams of the past and only 3 players are present from the one he inherited from Roy Hodgson. You simply cannot make that comparison anymore if you are genuinely serious about winning. Doing so just means your standards are far too low. Most pundits have said he’s proved his critics wrong but it won’t be long before he proves them right at club level. Maguire is just not as good as the pundits make him out to be. To be fair Klinnsman was talking about how Germany finished 3rd and they had a million people turn out at the Brandenburg gate. The klinnsman team with Ballack captain was popular, the people recognised the style and improvement. I don't agree with Southgate's team choices or subs tho, as Mark says.
Except for the fact that we’re not improving and have got worse though? Last World Cup we made the Semis & the last major tournament we’ve made the final…
I agree. We did quite well in 2018, since then we've thrown away the 2020 final and could have had a mch better go at France if Grealish and Maddison came on. Our midfield is amazing and half of them dont even get in the team.
For all of you calling for Southgate's head... who do you want to replace him? If, like me you'd like to see an English coach, then who? Eddie Howe probably won't leave Newcastle, Potter might be tempted away from Chelsea, but I doubt it. Who else is there? I liked Hoddle, but I don't know if the FA would ever invite him back.
Also a reminder, England is in the Group B of Nations league, on par with teams like Wales, Greece, Albania, Iceland,Montenegro…
And you still keep Southgate and wonder where do we make the mistake.
Hes absolutely deluded. Hes mental I think. He was a rubbish player now hes a crap coach..they should give it to someone who understands attacking football cos Southgates a crap defender.

Southgate took so long to make his choice because he knew his mates in the media and his favourite players would lobby hard for him to stay.
France have 2 blisteringly quick wingers so it makes sense to concede possession, stay organised and hit teams in transitions. Apart from the penalty which was just an individual mistake France looked comfortable, England did not 'dominate'.

It just goes to show that the FA has no ambition to win the big trophies. Proper big countries like Brazil and Germany will sack their manager and have an inquest, as Mark said. It's about standards. Germany and Brazil have much higher standards, and that's why they'll win another World Cup before England will.
And you know what, they deserve to win a World Cup before we do.

Southgate can’t use a bench as deep as that without shooting himself in the foot. That to me showed the difference in levels. One manager can use his bench effectively, the other cannot because he is tactically inept.

Spot on with every aspect Mark
