The lead singer is Roy Wood and is a real legend. Was a member of a great UK band called The Move who had several great hits. He also was a founder member of another legendary band called Electric Light Orchestra in the early 70s.

I'm a bit late to the party but i agree with Roy being a legend. He is one of the least recognized and yet one of the most influential persons in the music industry in the late 60's through the 70's. Either through direct musicianship, song writing, lyricist or production, he is so important to so many people of that era. I would go as far as to say if there are music gods, he's one of them.

This was a golden era for pop music in the UK, early 1970s from about 1971-1974, called the glam rock era. Wizzard, Slade, Marc Bolan's T.Rex, Sweet, Mud, Suzi Quatro, Alvin Stardust, and (dare I say the name, the now disgraced Gary Glitter) - every week on the UK music show 'Top of the Pops' (which this video is from) tried to outdo each other with more and more outrageous costumes, and glitzy/glittery outfits. It was a fun time, all the bands were having fun, as you can see here, with the pie throwing. David Bowie became part of this movement too, for a while, but his music and version of glam rock was considered more 'highbrow' and he was a bit distanced from the scene mentioned above as he wasn't on TOTP a lot initially (though he and his band did appear, performing Starman). By the mid-70s glam rock UK-style was dying out, though it was taking off in the US then with bands like KISS (who were heavier, apart from Slade and Sweet - both bands could really rock out), and it wouldn't be long before punk took hold in both the UK and US. Great times, I was about 10-14 years old in that era, and I still love all those bands.

I'm a heavy metal lead guitarist and singer. I did a New Year's Eve gig at a London Freemason Lodge. The rather inebriated audience pretty much cast off their ties and high heels and partied on, cheering and spraying us with silly string. We were booked for a two hour gig, but the audience wouldn't let us go. We ran out of covers as people began to droop in the wee small hours, but they wanted one more. We went into a huddle, and I suggested this song. Thankfully, the bassist, rhythm guitarist and keyboard player knew it, and I was able to write a drum pattern for the percussionist.
It wasn't metal, but boy, was it joy. My voice and guitar playing have never been better, despite the fact that I was fighting hoarseness, and the other band members all excelled, too, even though we'd never even practiced it as a band. We had constant cheers from the end of that number through "Happy New Year to all of you!" "Good morning!", packing up the gear and taking it to our cars. I hadn't touched a drop of alcohol, because I had to drive to and from the gig. But I felt like Elkie Brookes on Lilac Wine as I drove home in the early hours. I have done this acoustically on other New Year's Eves in my local pub for a few years, and the other customers always join in and enjoy it.

Roy Wood was a genius. Not only was he a founding member of ELO, but also the hugely influential psychedelic rock band that predated them, The Move. He was also a huge influence on Cheap Trick

Glad you're "super" excited (ugh, hate the use of "super" all the time by people). Here's two albums from Roy Wood (the singer and songwriter from Wizzard) where he has written every song, played every instrument, sung every voice and even produced both albums himself.
