Yes. And if you fast wrong, it is true. You should keep your protein intact or even increase it. Fasting is not just stopping eating. It also requires a modified, protein rich, diet when you come out of your fast. Hit the legumes, chicken and fish. And it needs high intensity interval training to maintain muscle mass.

Ken Berry is causing harm with his bad advice. He should be removed from here. Eating saturated animal fats make insulin resistance worse, yet he is constantly recommending carnivore diets. The only thing worse for you is trans fats. Lard and tallow are especially bad if it ends up in cells that aren't supposed to hold it like cells in your liver or pancreas. Ken Berry has talked about fatty liver being a problem many times, but is unknowingly contributing to the problem. He was dumb enough to call the ADA "incompetent" just because they don't officially endorse his favorite diet.

I didn't know anything about this diet and fasting at that time BUT it made complete sense that all the crap we were feeding them IN THE HOSPITAL caused crazy erratic blood sugars that we couldn't stabilize. Dietitians would send juice on every tray for ALL our diabetic patients and high carbohydrate 5 times a day, because they needed those cookies and fruit all day long. I threw away a lot of stuff of their trays EVERY DAY!! I worked there for a year. It was the most frustrating job I ever had😢

I remember a book from a class my mother took in college. It was back in the 60s. The authors were studying the African bushman people. When members left the tribe and went to the city. A significant fraction became diabetic . Some returned home extremely sick . The " uneducated and simple minded " shaman would tell them to eat nothing but giraffe for a time. Contrary to the observers expectations they would get better. Apparently such "primitive people" didn't understand that such advice couldn't possibly help ! They were so "misinformed " that they rapidly got healthier. Rather than taking a variety of drugs. They interacted with friends and family. It's frustrating when someone does all the wrong things and it works.

Maybe you don't understand that the book was from about 60 years ago. I haven't seen it since that time.
It was written when textbooks honestly described their subjects. I also believe that was the term used by the authors .
Today's text books are very careful with the words they use and are nearly devoid of real content. They are more concerned with supporting the dogma than real information.
When that book was written it confounded the current understanding. Yet to promote real knowledge it was published.
Education is currently broken by woke. Or whatever the currently appropriate name of the bullshit dogma is.

To all the chronic T2D out there still struggling....I am so tired of our mentors ignoring the fact that meat protein is converted to sugar by gluconeogensis. Its also a fact that an egg contains around 06.g of carbohydrates. Its also a fact that if you eat too much meat in a day you will trigger too much gluconeogensis and have elevated BG the next day in an exagerated dawn efftect. I respect our mentors but it seems like they do not understand that some T2D are chronic. Not eating eggs (lets not mention that egg whites contain ablumin), OMAD, no salt, and balancing protein vs fat to avoid too much gluconeogenesis is the trick for chronic T2D, but our mentors just do not seem to get it. Yes I am frustrated but at least I can keep my BG down by only eating ruminat meat (not pigs, not eggs, not chicken, and certainly not fish), and water and OMAD until completely sasiated. Ruminats filter plant toxins in one of thier 4 stomachs called the ruminant (this stomach ferments the plant matter turning it into fat). Pigs, fish and chickens do not filter plant toxins anywhere nearly as well as ruminants. Cows, sheep and goats are ruminants - they have 4 plant toxin filtering stomachs. This version of carnivore puts me in fat burining ketosis(0.4 to 0.8) for 15 hours everyday.

@@infinitum5425 Very well done. For myself unfortunatley I am still chronic. I can only normalize my A1C if I eat eneough fat and less protein for a very long time. So I cannot even eat dairy due to the galactose. My guess is that I will have to be high fat for at least 6 months and possibly up to 2 years. My problem is that I am strggling to eat the fat and end up eating too much red meat which triggers gluconeogensis the next morning and high BG. Glad you caught yours in time, we are not ll that lucky.

Dr. Fung said everyone agrees that more carbohydrates more insulin produced. That is the whole point Vegan like Dr. Greger and Dr. Bernard claim the opposite. They said it is settled science that protein and fat induce more insulin produced comparing to carbohydrates. The two positions are mutually exclusive. Also for Vegans high glucose spikes like above 200 after meal is no problem at all as long as it dropped back to normal like 80s.

I have been struggling with controlling my blood glucose for several years now. Even doing keto and now carnivore. Wearing a CGM, etc. I ask for the proper tests from my doctor which he complies. My fasting insulin for the last 4 years is 5 or less. My C-Peptide over the same period is 2.0 or less. My doctor did not know how to order the proper LADA tests so now I have an appointment with a Endo in about 3 weeks. I suspect I might be in early stages of LADA but need to the tests to tell me something. I am also going to get a full Thyroid panel done as I suspect there might be some thyroid issues as well. I'll be curious how this Endo office will recognize low carb.
As a retired veteran I have finally been recognized as having been around Agent Orange on the island of Guam. So I am fighting prostate cancer, type 2 diabetes and Hypothyroid will be covered as well...if needed.

  • @monnoo8221

Jason key point is that its not logical to eat carbs, or even recommend to do so, despite a very simple relationship between food, glucose, insulin and getting fat and sick. So, we need to search for an explanation that considers both physiology and behavior.
I think T2D, obesity, or hyperinsulinemic disorders can only be understood as "a runaway addiction, based on perverting an evolutionary selected mechanisms linking external ecology to internal physiology, mediated by Fructose, leading to internal intoxication and susceptibility to external intoxications". Fructose\glucose was seasonally available only, and has profound effects on animal behavior. Fructose is kind of eco-physiological messenger, linking environment to behavior to physiology. It is very exceptional in this role. Everything (!!) regarding obesity takes place within that framework. Glucose is the energy part of the story, fructose is the messenger. The messenger creates the addiction, not the energy. The effect is the similar when glucose appears at the same as fat, even without fructose.
Thus, obesity and the often following T2D is NOT a metabolic disorder. It is a disorder, observable in metabolism and behavior, caused by an addiction, to which our body is vulnerable. That "addictionability" created a whole supply chain of "food as drugs", a social narrative, and positive feedback loops on every level of the society. It became a disorder of society.

After years following keto and an active life style I ended up insulin resistant. First year or so it worked well, I got rid of 12 pounds and felt great. Never struggled with food choices and enjoyed my life with no cravings. Untill I started gaining weight. I adjusted anything I could adjust, stopped dairy and nuts, did my exercise, fixed my sleep as good as I could, did intermitted fasting, once a year a prolonged fast. Few days ago my doctor did an insulin resistance test. For years there was this thing, that my fasting blood glucose was too high for someone who lived without carbs. ---- I was confused that my ketones stayed always below 1.0 - mostly below 0.5 - stopped measuring as I got so frustrated. I actually never run on ketones. How is this possible? - I finally have the facts, but not the reason. I'm on Metformin since this week. Is there anyone who expierenced the same? None of my doctors could explain this to me. Can keto lead to insuline resistance?
