    I've been looking for this forever. I remember seeing this on a random weekend on TV when I was in elementary school and the images of the opening fluff piece had been etched into my mind with the Romanian girls skipping in a circle and saying how they lived and trained together since they were children unlike the American team who were collected from all across the country. For an 8 year old, that type of narrative was so compelling to me for some reason. I could not remember what competition this was or even what year I've seen it for me to even know what to look for.

      Do you think NBC ever watches events like this and asks themselves, "Why didn't we show just one routine from that seventh Romanian?" I know hindsight's 20/20, but it's a shame the only one of the 14 gymnasts they didn't show (Simona Amanar) ended up being one of the most accomplished the group.

      NO ONE WHO EVEN SHOOTS THE STUFF WATCHES IT, THEY JUST DO IT ALL FOR A JOB AND MONEY, THEY COULDN'T CARE LESS, ONLY A TRUE GYMNASTICS FAN WOULD NOTICE SOMETHING LIKE WHAT YOU SAID....

    • @casandraleff4462
      @casandraleff4462 7 лет назад +1

      LISZTIZATION I'm flattered by your implication that I might be a "true" gymnastics fan, but disagree that only a true fan would notice what I did - I consider myself more than a four-year fan, but far from an expert. I just heard her name announced in the background early on in the coverage and then was surprised not to see her compete later.
      I also disagree that the TV people "couldn't care less." They did, after all, care enough to show at least one routine from the other 13 gymnasts at this meet l. My guess is between routines and fluff pieces, they got low on time and had to cut a girl out. It seems safe to assume the decision came down to Amanar or Cacovean (They wouldn't have cut an American - especially two years before a U.S. Olympics.). Since they highlighted Cacovean in their fluff pieces, and she was the one with the cute interview in English, she was the one who made the TV broadcast.

    • @LISZTIZATION

      HERE IS SOME TRUTH FOR YA, A CLOSER EXAMINATION THAT MOST PEOPLE WON'T TALK ABOUT........MOST PEOPLE DO LIKE GYMNASTICS, BUT MOST WILL NOT TALK ABOUT IT OR ADMIT IT, ESPECIALLY GUYS, SINCE SOME OF THE GIRLS ARE PRETTY, AND SOMETIMES PRETTY YOUNG, I'M SURE THERE IS GYMNASTICS FANS THAT HAVE SHOT COMPETITIONS, LIKE MYSELF, BUT ARE AFRAID TO BE "OFFICIAL" FANS FOR FEAR OF BEING LABELED A PERV IN PEOPLE'S MINDS, SO THEY STAY IN "MACHO WORLD" AND ONLY TALK ABOUT FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL, ON LOCATION SHOOTS, OR IN THE STUDIO, OR WHERE EVER, WHICH I ALWAYS THOUGHT WAS FAIRLY GAY FOR GUYS TO BE SOOOOOOO INTO BIG HAIRY GUYS CHASING A BALL AROUND, PERSONALLY I WOULD RATHER WATCH THE FEMALE GENDER CHASE STUFF AROUND, AND DO SOMETHING ARTISTIC TO GREAT MUSIC !!!
      SO TO FURTHER CLARIFY WHAT I SAID BEFORE, WHILE AT WORK ANYWAY, THE PEOPLE ON THE CREWS THAT SHOOT THE STUFF HAVE TO PRETEND THEY DON'T LIKE IT, AND AREN'T INTERESTED IN IT, AND DON'T KNOW ALL THE NAMES AND STATS OF THE COMPETITORS, ETC. - THAT IS THE GAME THEY HAVE TO PLAY IN THIS SOCIETY WE LIVE IN, AT LEAST THAT HOW IT COMES ACROSS AT THE MEETS I'VE BEEN TO, BUT IN REALITY THEY PROBABLY KNOW A LOT MORE ABOUT IT ALL THAN THEY WOULD EVER ADMIT, BUT AS FAR AS WHO THEY SHOW, THEY PROBABLY JUST RAN OUT OF TIME, LIKE YOU SAID......LIFE IS A GAME, AND GYMNASTS ARE HOT.........THAT'S THE TRUTH OF IT......... WELL A FEW OF THEM ANYWAY......IN FACT MALE & FEMALE GYMNASTS HAVE THE MOST PERFECT BODIES OF ANY SPORT THAT I'VE EVER SEEN, IN OTHER WORDS, I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANY OTHER SPORT WHERE THEY WORK HARDER, AND DEVELOP BETTER BODIES THAN GYMNASTICS !!!

      @jojox9791 7 лет назад +1

      LISZTIZATION well, while your right insofar as many grown men don't want to acknowledge they watch for fear of being a perv..... where your wedding is in saying they have the best developed bodies, as gymnasts don't fully mature during elite level training. mensuration is delayed, along with just about everything else. some men prefer compact"women" and others small women with his, chests and buts, which comes after the intense 60 hr week work outs end

    • @LISZTIZATION

      Absolutely. She had a fantastic Double Twisting Yurchenko, solid bars, great beam, and top-notch tumbling for Floor (if not great choreography). Wow! A 9.75 for Miller's bar routine. I love Shannon's gymnastics but they gave her gifts here. How Ghimpu got a lower score on vault than Shannon with a more difficult vault and a stick is beyond my comprehension. I know that reputation counts especially back when, but it's kinda rude to the Romanians.

      Angela Gimpu's vault scores were an absolute disgrace, Gina Gogean's as well. Gimpu stuck her first vault, no form breaks in the air, Shannon took a step on her 2nd vault, yet Gimpu gets a 9.85 vs Shannon's 9.9?

  • @matthewhines9787
    @matthewhines9787 2 года назад +3

    Yes. There was an American bias here, but I'd argue there was more of just a plain old Shannon Miller bias. Even some the American routines got shafted. Doni had superb beam routine with difficulty, form, line, amplitude, perfect technique, and just a .05 step on the landing...she somehow got only a 9.9 sv from the judges and scored a 9.7.

      For the U.S. yes. If I remember right, though five of the Romanians were originally named to the Olympic team, but only three (Amânar, Gogean and Milosovici) actually competed. Cacovean had to pull out before the team came to the U.S., and Bican was hurt in Atlanta. Also, Hatagan was part of the 1994 and 1995 World teams. So this was probably close to their best available team at the time.

    Don't get me wrong, Shannon's a fantastic gymnast, but it really showed how the US judges favored Shannon in this quad, not just here, but also the 94 nationals. Larissa Fontaine and a few Romanians actually vaulted better than Shannon, yet she was given a higher score than them. For example, Gina Gogean's vaults were so rigged, anything below a 9.85 for the fist vault is a disgrace, Nadia Hategan's vault scores were also lower than I expected, it should've been just slightly lower than Larisa's. This competition was so disrespectful to the Romanians. Larisa should've had sole first place after the bars rotation after Shannon's bars mishap. Also in Nationals, Shannon took a huge uncontrolled step during her first pass on floor, was given a 9.9, and she scored 9.4 on beam with a fall in addition to other errors. The scores made her a lot closer to Dominique Dawes who won, when in international judging the margin would've been much larger

      Jason Smith maybe unpopular, but I don’t have a huge problem with Dagget. maybe he’s really repetitive, but still has some things to say. I’m glad Elfi is gone. She was a downright bully and had nothing nice to say. 2003 WC she said “I never thought they’d use someone with so little talent.”

    The commentary is absolutely abysmal. Comments like ‘she might be out of the family’ in regards to the Romanian athlete and ‘not bad for a replacement’ for the US girl. It’s just beyond me that they comment on personal things instead of the gymnastics itself. They really should’ve been axed years ago.

    I find the Romanians very boring to watch. They appear unenthusiastic, rote and quite uninspiring routines. This crop of gymnasts were not as creative as comanici or silivas. Even when I was a kid and watching gymnastics I remember thinking this. Americans far more interesting.

      Their strength was their consistency. They could not get it wrong. I personally found it very exciting, to watch them stick, stick and win while all the rest made mistakes. They were the best in competition, their medal count proves it. And their team spirit was equal to none.

    • @SDoesNotKnow
      @SDoesNotKnow 4 года назад +3

      Agreed. This was the beginning of the Octavian Belu reign where he chose boring robotics over personality. But I did sort of find that exciting in a way. Seeing the same interchangeable gymnastics sticking and winning over more exciting but less consistent gymnasts. Then the difficulty of gymnastics went up and their forms got fugly but they still had the robotics and the same arm choreography. Of course, once the open-ended system happened, that was the fall of Romanian gymnastics as they could no longer game the 10.00 system by finding the easiest and most consistent but boring ways to hit the 10.00 SV without pushing any envelopes save for the Amanar. The Soviets they were not. Now more difficulty was rewarded, and doing more difficulty than “necessary” finally got rewarded. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the Belu-philosophy and they fell behind. That said, that consistent robotic mantra did have them backing into a few bronze medals until Romania ran out of gymnasts.
