I agree, but this also shows how it’s a grind for everybody. From finishing songs to listening to the mix for a track to releasing and promoting the album to doing the tour, it’s a 24/7 thing. And they don’t get paid overtime, or have benefits or health insurance. Not unless you join a musicians union.

I understood him saying what he did about 170 retakes of a song in the studio ... just exasperating. Stevie is so stubborn about having her songs a priority, most of this documentary featured her songs only.
It would have been good to hear more of Lindsay's songs. You can overthink how a song sounds, should sound, could sound and I thought Lindsay was very patient with Stevie's demands and insisting on having her songs take over the album.
The one thing I didn't agree about was his view that it didn't matter if a double album didn't make money, it was about the music. If you don't make money you can't make the music, and if you can't make money a record label isn't interested.

So essentially Fleetwood Mac is a 40 year therapy session for two people who split up in the 1970s and have never quite been able to get away from each other. But that aside, it just shows the creative, personal and business politics that make producing a cohert product so difficult. Especially when you have multiple managers, record companies and lawyers involved.

Without Lindsey's contributions, the early success of Fleetwood Mac (White album '75, Rumours '77, Tusk '79, Mirage '82, and Tango in the Night '87) would cease to exist. In fact, it's highly doubtful that Stevie would have remained in the music business without Lindsey. He was the creative engine behind their highest successes, and their current status as a global supergroup is largely down to him. I don't dispute any of that and I think it was a gutless move for them to fire him at this late stage in their lives, especially as they originally only wanted him, and it was at his insistence that Nicks be allowed to join as well. I don't know how Buckingham can even sleep at night for just how unfair it was for them to ditch him now.

The songs are fantastic, but I don't think all of them were produced well. Some of the demos sound better. Say Goodbye has this weird up-tempo vibe with filtered vocals- it sounds so much better live. Goodbye Baby has these beautiful harmonies that got swallowed by filters on the album version, but the live recordings give you chills...Thrown Down started out with a really cool 'question and answer' effect on the chorus of her demo version that got cut... Some of the songs were over-produced in a way that wouldn't have happened if these songs came out in the 70's... Even so, they are masterpiece songs... and that's a testimate to how amazing this band is... I listen to this album and think 'I wish they did this song differently' but I still love and appreciate the songs.

There are sooo many FM documentaries out there that they all start to meld together as the same recycled content after awhile, but this one will always stand out for me (along with the Tusk doc) as one of - if not the best one. I could watch their dynamic as a group for hours on end. Especially Stevie and Lindsey, whom I will always believe are soulmates in another reality. Seeing them behind the scenes and watching how they talk through things with each other is just so entertaining. I hope more than anything that they will end on good terms and reunite eventually, before it's too late...

Can't believe I have never seen this. I love Lindsey's pure artistry and his desire to create that which reflects the absolute best of what he has to give. His refusal to exist in mediocrity is inspiring.
As far as Stevie believing that no one would want to buy a double album, I for one would have purchased at least one, but more likely a few more as gifts for friends.
Lindsey seemed to feel a need to justify his feelings, or to say that maybe they were self serving, but for f*#@ sake, he worked his ass off, pouring his heart and soul into the album. I would never say that is self serving, as the group received the benefits of his labor of love.
Saw him play some years back in San Francisco, and my life is better for it. My soul was moved.

I’ve seen them in concert 5 times and those are some of the best moments of my life. It makes me sad to think after all these years and all the success and fame and love and unity, they’re not together anymore. Just like it felt weird seeing them without Christine, it’s horrible to consider seeing them without Lindsey. I was 18 when I first saw them....and seeing the sheer passion in that man’s entire being was just awe inspiring...the others were AMAZING, but there was something different about Lindsey...

@@reencampbell4481 Hey, they're all 70 now. No band members stay together/together for 40/50 years. Creating and performing music, as a group, is intense and people get tired of one another--it's human nature. It's astounding that this group has not just survived but mostly thrived for as long as it has. One of the great bands of all time--and the earlier versions of FM were great, too--not as commercially successful, but a lot of fantastic music, even in the interim between Peter Green and Buckingham/Nicks. Some great middle-period FM albums--Bare Trees, Future Games, etc.

People talk about the Nicks/Buckingham connection all the time, but to me, McVie/Buckingham really play off each other. Love McVie, but on her own her songs are too soft rock/pop (see her solo stuff and songs she did on Behind The Mask) to me. Lindsey adds a much needed edge to her songs to make them perfect (Little Lies and their recent "duet" album are prime examples).

there is a tortured dynamic to the makeup of this band. it's like if you forced Joni Mitchell, the Wilson Brothers, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, and Dusty Springfield into a band together and then FORCED them to make albums together. One may have little use for one member or another.. certainly Christine(Dusty Springfield) may seem the most lightweight or trite of the band. But look at the genius of it.. two brilliant innovative L.A. types.. first rate songwriting, next level pop production, with a deep soul level connection to their music .. a classic late 60s blues rhythm section.. and then sprinkle on top British pop songwriting like Elton John along with a singer steeped in British blues & r&b. It certainly paid off up front.. Christine's first hits for the band were bullets.. "You Make Lovin' Fun" "Over My Head" "Say You Love Me" ... she could have retired on those 3 ALONE! But she kept on producing singles for the band. That can't be denied though I agree you needed Lindsey to polish those diamonds! But Christine has an "IT" factor that the other two don't quite have. Even during the pre Buckingham Nicks era! ruclips.net/video/RuXmDW1FO7I/видео.html

The issue has always been about control. Lindsey is a “control freak” when it comes to album producing. He’s an absolute fanatic and doesn’t care about the “commercial” side of the product. For him it’s about the pure artistry of the music. For many years he was FM’s leader as far as the direction of their music. The albums “Tusk” and “Tango in the Night” are prime examples. When he left the band in 1987, and return to the fold (recording wise) in 2003 (Say You Will), he expected to resume where he left off. Unfortunately, the music industry had changed significantly and Stevie was far from that meek, naive, and dependent singer from the 70’s.

Omg, Stevie’s dog is so cute. I related to her in the ‘70s and ‘80’s and I still do today! I’ve had great loves and great losses but at this point, I’m soooooo happy with myself, my friends and my puppy.

Brilliant album. I would definitely recommend it to anybody. It's great to see the creative process behind it. I love singing, but only when I'm alone, I can't sing or keep in tune. But it makes me happy! I sing along to Stevie's songs more than any others, but if she ever heard me she would be horrified! Sorry Stevie:).

A voice doesn't need to be great to be beautiful. Imperfection and lack of vocal training isn't as important as feeling and singing for the joy of it. Keep singing loud and true, I'm sure you sound just fine.

His ex partner of 8 years, Carol Ann Harris, might disagree with you. He would strangle and `punch her when his jealous rages kicked in. Witnesses saw the bruising and Christine McVie witnessed him reversing out of her driveway with his arm out the window dragging his girlfriend by the hair. When he let go and roared off, her scalp was bloody.

It's a great album, really is, Destiny Rules is one of the best songs they ever did, but it's just missing one thing. Christine McVie. There's a huge hole there nobody else can fill. But now I know why I can't duplicate the tone of Lindsey's guitar for that song. Need an amazingly cool old vintage electric National resonator. Sweet.
