ZipZapZop Martha, the first girl, is singing about how her father sexually abuses her whilst her mother doesn’t stop him. The second girl, Ilse, went though the same thing and comes in to support Martha. “The Dark I Know Well” is the sexual abuse
I was just wondering, from a directing point of view, what the impact would be if you actually included the abusers in this scene, appearing vocally and physically and certain moments of the song, or having the abusers sing this to the victims?
Am I a tenor if I can sing this song in this key comfortably, none of the other boys in college could sing this song and they call themselves tenors, yet I get called baritone and I can sing this better than they can. Although I can go fairly low I’m always able to sing higher every boy I’ve meant in my education who claims to be higher than me Other examples include Michael in the bathroom - Be more chill All that’s known - Spring Awakening freeze your brain - Heathers meant to be yours - Heathers Seventeen - Heathers I’m alive - Next to Normal And then there were none - Spring Awakening
The saddest part is that the actress playing Ilse actually was sexually abused by a family member from age 4-8. My heart hurts for her singing this for years.
Martha (the first girl to sing) is singing about how her father sexually abuses her while her mother ignores it. Ilse, the second girl, experienced the same thing and she comes in to support Martha. The "Dark I Know Well" is the abuse.
Lightning Larry Luciano interestingly enough the official licensing page for the show says they’re sisters too... but then I haven’t seen any reference to that in either the musical or the play, and they have completely different surnames which seems to contradict that interpretation?? (At first I thought that since Ilse’s surname literally means ‘new man’ it could be an alias she used to reinvent herself or something... but then MTI’s character breakdowns refer to her father as Herr Neumann too which would imply that it’s actually her real name)
Spring Awakening is by far my favourite musical and this is the song that introduced me to it! I recently uploaded an unofficial music video for this song with my own singing, please please check it out if you have the chance! I'd love to know and hear the thoughts/feedback of fellow S/A fans 💞 ruclips.net/video/xbjFEeOXA9Y/видео.html (PS - this musical owns my soul)

I wish they didn't just imply it. Having a victim of abuse representing men would've amplified the message more imo

"It's just you and me"
"Child you're a beauty"
I don't scream though I know it's wrong
I just play along
I lie there and breathe
Lie there and breathe
I wanna be strong
I want the world to find out
That you're dreamin' on me
Me and my beauty
Me and my beauty
You say all you want is just to kiss goodnight
Then you hold me and you whisper, "Child the Lord won't mind"
"It's just you and me"
"Child you're a beauty"
"God, it's good to lovin', ain't it good tonight"
"You ain't seen nothin' yet, gonna treat you right"
"It's just you and me"
"Child you're a beauty"
There's a part I can't tell
'Bout the dark I know well
There's a part I can't tell
About the dark I know well
There's a part I can't tell
'Bout the dark I know well
There's a part I can't tell

Damn this song is good, one of the few musicals I liked the national version more (brazilian), but this song is great in the original as well
No showtunes song has made me cry like this!
There's a part I can't tell
About the dark I know well
You say, "Time for bed now, child"
Mom just smiles that smile
Just like she never saw me
Just like she never saw me
So I leave wantin' just to hide
Knowin' deep inside
You are comin' to me
You are comin' to me
You say all you want is just to kiss goodnight
Then you hold me and you whisper, "Child the Lord won't mind
It's just you and me
Child you're a beauty"
"God, it's good to lovin', ain't it good tonight
You ain't seen nothin' yet, gonna treat you right
It's just you and me
Child you're a beauty"

GRANDIOSA!
Do you think Martha's mother was also abused by Herr Bessel, hence the "We have rules in this house. Your father will not be disobeyed." ?
I've always thought that
Here we go again - even better 😊
This song HAUNTS me
The starting chord made me think this was Shine a Light (Reprise).
So sad, so powerful
So, did Martha's mom know about it?
The bit about her confuses me.
Fandom Fan yes, she just chose to ignore the abuse
Fandom Fan She knows but doesn’t do anything about it
Hard to believe she also played Sandy in Spongebob Musical since these characters are so o
my preferite song from spring. i hope our first italian version will be strong too
Listening to this soundtrack for the first time. What the HECK is happening?
ZipZapZop Martha, the first girl, is singing about how her father sexually abuses her whilst her mother doesn’t stop him. The second girl, Ilse, went though the same thing and comes in to support Martha. “The Dark I Know Well” is the sexual abuse
I was just wondering, from a directing point of view, what the impact would be if you actually included the abusers in this scene, appearing vocally and physically and certain moments of the song, or having the abusers sing this to the victims?
Powerful! Is there a revival to the musical?
+Samantha Ryan and it is brilliant.
Y’all check out the deaf awakening version of this! It’s so good
Just got a call back for Martha and have to sing this song !!
Same here recently!!! Hope it went well!
Is it bad to say this is my favorite song from the musical?
It's not, she's my 3 favorite too
Am I a tenor if I can sing this song in this key comfortably, none of the other boys in college could sing this song and they call themselves tenors, yet I get called baritone and I can sing this better than they can.
Although I can go fairly low I’m always able to sing higher every boy I’ve meant in my education who claims to be higher than me
Other examples include
Michael in the bathroom - Be more chill
All that’s known - Spring Awakening
freeze your brain - Heathers
meant to be yours - Heathers
Seventeen - Heathers
I’m alive - Next to Normal
And then there were none - Spring Awakening
So I'm auditioning with this song and was wondering if anyone had some tips that could help me sing better with this
1:57
I tried to get a friend to listen to this song earlier, but she stopped listening after 20 seconds saying it was boring and repetitive. -__-*
:( this song
The saddest part is that the actress playing Ilse actually was sexually abused by a family member from age 4-8. My heart hurts for her singing this for years.
Gosh.. Next to normal :'( my favorite show ever
wait whats going on here I'm confused as hell someone explain wHAT IS HAPPENING
Martha (the first girl to sing) is singing about how her father sexually abuses her while her mother ignores it. Ilse, the second girl, experienced the same thing and she comes in to support Martha. The "Dark I Know Well" is the abuse.
O
Katherine Byers apparently ilse is martha’s sister so they’re actually talking about the same person when talking about their fathers
@@itmedana nah they aren't siblings they just happened to share a very traumatic experience
Lightning Larry Luciano interestingly enough the official licensing page for the show says they’re sisters too... but then I haven’t seen any reference to that in either the musical or the play, and they have completely different surnames which seems to contradict that interpretation?? (At first I thought that since Ilse’s surname literally means ‘new man’ it could be an alias she used to reinvent herself or something... but then MTI’s character breakdowns refer to her father as Herr Neumann too which would imply that it’s actually her real name)
holy FUCK
Spring Awakening is by far my favourite musical and this is the song that introduced me to it! I recently uploaded an unofficial music video for this song with my own singing, please please check it out if you have the chance! I'd love to know and hear the thoughts/feedback of fellow S/A fans 💞 ruclips.net/video/xbjFEeOXA9Y/видео.html
(PS - this musical owns my soul)
💞💞💞💞💞
@agenttheater5 i doubt they'll do this on glee..
When I was a teen this used to be my favorite song from the musical because this was my reality. I’m so glad I cut off my parents and am free now
She sounds like a female version of Matthew Sanders
This is a really good song but I always skip it when it comes up in playlists because it’s just really rough subject matter.
@ChoChangYall *sigh* my thoughts EXACTLY
well fuck.
so sad :(
*Whisper's* svu true crime the menedez murder sorry I have an obbsesion with that show
