I like the approach that the play, as opposed to the movie takes with the depth of Frollo as a character. In the movie, he sings this with such a condescending and lecturing tone, it's very obvious that he doesn't care about Quasi Modo at all. From the very beginning Frollo was pure evil. But in the play, especially at this point, it's very clear that he still cares deeply for Quasi, and sees it as his duty to protect him from the cruelness of the world. His tone is so gentle and sincere in this scene. His hatred of gypsies comes from a real prejudice other than just "he's evil", because he genuinely believes that gypsy woman put a curse on his brother in the beginning of the play. Everything he does is with care and with reason, but the series of events hardens his heart and he slowly turns crueler over the course of the play. Whereas in the movie, he's just evil for the sake of being evil.
TheaterRaven I think that we can't say Frollo's intentions in the whole story were good ..of course... But, have you seen the real world? He is not lying
Of course I know the real world can be as cruel as Frollo paints it to be in Quasimodo's head. But it also can be the complete opposite. It's full of people who are kind and compassionate without bowing to the strict religious dogma Frollo feels people must submit to in order to be good. Characters like Esmeralda and Phoebus illustrate as such.
@@jacksont9455 I like your thoughts on Frollo I completely agree, in the movie he was just evil for the sake of it but in the play (which I have not seen it sadly) he shows a true caring protecting nature and mentality towards quasi modo. In short the movie Frollo meh not much character there and play Frollo so much character love it.
TheaterRaven That’s why the message that stays in Quasimodo’s mind, after he kills Frollo, is still the same melody here but with a more circular context. The World is cruel The world is ugly But there are times, and there are people, when the world is not And, at it’s cruelest, it is still the only world we got Light and dark Foul and fair Out there Frollo was never completely wrong of what he said and taught Quasimodo, nor was he completely right. All Frollo knew was what he made himself believe of his brother’s supposed downward spiral. Yet, he also knew for sure what killed his brother in the end, and he’s therefore passing his own defense mechanism(Hiding above the world behind glass and stone) onto Quasimodo, his brother’s son, so Quasi could have, by Frollo’s personal standards, an arguably better way to live than the one Frollo watched his brother(no matter how much he’s denying it, by this point in the story) choose on his own.
Both of their voices are so amazing! Frollo's unimaginably deep and sensual voice, and Quasimodo's pure and dream-like voice! It's like ear-candy! (Like eye candy but more for hearing pleasure.) It's absolutely sensational!!! Each half of the song is completely different, yet both singers and the gorgeous instrumental helps meld each part together! Mind-blowing!
Love this song. Quasimodo has a beautiful range of voice. Between him saying 'i am a monster' and singing 'Knowing them as they will never know me' I'm so glad they did a Broadway rendition
"If I were in their skin, I'd treasure every moment" I just imagine Quasimodo screaming at the people from his bell tower "IT PUTS THE LOTION ON ITS SKIN"
"Calumny" "Consternation" "Revile" "Scorn" "Jeer" "Scold" "Heedless" "Resent" This song helped me a lot with my English vocabulary, believe it or not 😂😂😂😂😂
*Frollo:* Quasimodo, _can't_ you understand? When your heartless mother abandoned you as a child, anyone else would have _drowned_ you. And this is my thanks for taking you in and raising you as my son? *Quasi:* I'm sorry, sir. *Frollo:* Oh, my dear Quasimodo. You don't know what it's like out there. I do... I do...

As much as I love the movie's version of this song, this version inspired me to learn the song. It's so full of impact and just downright beautiful. Michael Arden is a freaking genius at how he characterizes Quasimodo.
If Disney ever makes a real life character adaptation to this movie. If its not Michael Arden singing, then im out. Can't listen to this without going to tears, not even once. And especially "Heavens light." That one makes me cry.
thanks so much for just posting these songs without editing the speed or something stupid like that like other people do with music. I'm really glad you just gave us the straight up, unedited music. :)
I'd listen to Into Notre Dame between this one and Made of Stone. It's a sort of... sad Reprise of Out There, now hopeless, right after the crowd attacked Quasi, and he promises never to leave again... UGH!! IT'S SO PAINFUL BUT SO BRILLIANT!! 😢😭
"Every day they should and scold and go about their lives, heedless of the gift it is to be them" just a reminder that however bad you think you have it, someone else would die to have that
The first half of this song still hits me harder than it has any right to. So much so that I completely feel Quasimodo when he asks for just One day out there

This comment is for Alan Menken, the most integral part of every Disney film he composed for. His genius melodies elevates the material and captures the emotional beats perfectly.
I'm using this song to widen my vocal range. Very effective, theres only a few bottom notes that I'm having trouble with but I'm doing a lot better yee
In all honesty, I still prefer Tom Hulce's version from the movie. It's the one I grew up with and I'm more used to. Plus Hulce's voice is just so distinctive, warm and has a bit more passion to it. With that said, this is easily my second favorite version! This guy has mad pipes:)
Always thought it was weird that they substituted in the word “curses” rather than “calumny” in this version. Surely it’s not because they were afraid that the audiences wouldn’t understand the word, when this version incorporates some of the more adult elements to the book. If it’s good enough for the rated G Disney movie why not the play?
The World is cruel
The world is ugly
But there are times, and there are people, when the world is not
And, at it’s cruelest, it is still the only world we got
Light and dark
Foul and fair
Out there
Frollo was never completely wrong of what he said and taught Quasimodo, nor was he completely right.
I just love the little chuckle at 3:39. :) A beautiful version of a gorgeous song. :D
Wow - I literally did not even hear that until I read your comment and went back to listen!! :D :D
HIS VOICE IS LITERALLY PUTTING ME TO TEARS
Both of their voices are so amazing! Frollo's unimaginably deep and sensual voice, and Quasimodo's pure and dream-like voice! It's like ear-candy! (Like eye candy but more for hearing pleasure.) It's absolutely sensational!!! Each half of the song is completely different, yet both singers and the gorgeous instrumental helps meld each part together! Mind-blowing!
Their duets, as small as they are, are simply *GORGEOUS!* I love the way their voices sound together! 💜😍💜
Love this song. Quasimodo has a beautiful range of voice. Between him saying 'i am a monster' and singing 'Knowing them as they will never know me' I'm so glad they did a Broadway rendition
the worst thing about this song is that I can only like it once ;-;
*insert name here* unless you make multiple accounts
"If I were in their skin, I'd treasure every moment"
I just imagine Quasimodo screaming at the people from his bell tower "IT PUTS THE LOTION ON ITS SKIN"
It puts the lotion on its skin or else the bells won’t ring again
IT PUTS THE LOTION ON IT'S SKIN OR IT GETS THE LEAD AGAIN
"Calumny"
"Consternation"
"Revile"
"Scorn"
"Jeer"
"Scold"
"Heedless"
"Resent"
This song helped me a lot with my English vocabulary, believe it or not 😂😂😂😂😂
Comprehend
@@Samantha-Who-Writes That too 😁
*Frollo:* Quasimodo, _can't_ you understand? When your heartless mother abandoned you as a child, anyone else would have _drowned_ you. And this is my thanks for taking you in and raising you as my son?
*Quasi:* I'm sorry, sir.
*Frollo:* Oh, my dear Quasimodo. You don't know what it's like out there. I do... I do...
This scene was so good and so horrible...
Just got cast as Male 4 in this show
Disney's The hunchback of notre dame Disney best darkest Disney film in disney history of course r.i.p. Tony Jay God rest his soul did both speaking and singing of judge frollo in the movie hellfire great and epic song
BooBop1987 yeah an amazing actor and great singer singing hellfire in the movie r.i.p. Tony Jay God rest his soul
Esmy Pacheco I do the same thing as well!
BooBop1987 yeah disney's the hunchback of notre dame best and dark Disney film
Esmy Pacheco And it's one of my favorite films too!
BooBop1987 yeah even judge frollo has some lustful feelings over Esmeralda
As much as I love the movie's version of this song, this version inspired me to learn the song. It's so full of impact and just downright beautiful. Michael Arden is a freaking genius at how he characterizes Quasimodo.
This hits hard during quarantine
Such emotion behind the voice, left me speechless
I love the voices, but I really would love to hear the instrumental track on its own too.
+King Mel believe me so would I. The music I magnificent
were you a band kid? lol
If Disney ever makes a real life character adaptation to this movie. If its not Michael Arden singing, then im out. Can't listen to this without going to tears, not even once. And especially "Heavens light." That one makes me cry.
I hear ya on that. And if they don’t get Patrick Page for Frollo, I’m out too.
Goosebumps every freakin' time!
Alan Menkin you absolute GENIUS.
He sins so beautifully and then speaks so differently (pretty great acting)
Don’t kill me, but I love this version so much better than the movie version
I think a lot of people agree with you - personally, I'm honestly too torn to choose a favourite version!
I love both versions equally they are both great!
I love this song , the emotion and passion in it is breathtaking , Quasimodo truly captures your heart in this song
We must protect this sweet boy
he is precious
He's a darling, gentle sweetheart and must be loved and protected. 😍
Yes
Lena Pines right? When I watched the movie for the first time, I remember thinking "He's so sweet!

Use me to get to straight to the Quasimodo solo
My most favorite song of all time!
beautiful thank you for uploading
i literally shivered so hard
I'm not crying... It's sand in my eyes...
this simultaneously makes me so happy and so sad
Love this song, one of my favorites
I noticed how in the beginning of the song and for the rest, the music sounds more sad and lonely, it's amazing
Who else is listening to the “Best Tenor Musical Theater Songs” soundtrack?
sodium i am, i need a good one for an audition. i want five options, i currently have two. i want at least one to be a disney song
Every time I want to go out and the anxiety starts to kick in.
thanks so much for just posting these songs without editing the speed or something stupid like that like other people do with music.
I'm really glad you just gave us the straight up, unedited music. :)
This is especially heartbreaking if you listen to this and "Made of Stone" back to back.
Shoot me in the chest why don't you.
Michael Arden has the BEST Broadway voice. And such a great actor. Your my idol. - a little RUclipsr
I saw a performance of this last night and this song made me cry so hard
This song hits different in quarantine...
"Every day they should and scold and go about their lives, heedless of the gift it is to be them"
just a reminder that however bad you think you have it, someone else would die to have that
The first half of this song still hits me harder than it has any right to. So much so that I completely feel Quasimodo when he asks for just One day out there
I love his singing is basically inner monolog
I love this movie and music
I relate to this song on a spiritual level
I love how the voices here works better with the characters. Much better than the movie.
Every homeschoolers theme song! At least for me!! Man I wish had a social life with teenagers my age!
Is there no homeschooling group near you? Can you not participate in activities like Girl Scouts/Guides, join extracurricular activities, etc.? I've been homeschooled all my life, too, and I have a social life with girls my age.
@@carlottarobbins7005 there's no homeschooling group near me and I'm 20 which I think is too old for girl scouts and my mom doesn't like us to do many outside things people who my mother doesn't know. Her whole saying is she has us in homeschooling because she wants to protect us from the outside world and all of the bad things. Which I know she does out of love but I'd really like her to loosen the reibs a little so I could have a social life and have experience in the outside world instead of being completely inaxepirenced and overwhelmed when I go to restaurants or stores or talk to people. I can barely have a conversation with someone without stuttering or shaking!!
@@emilym8530 oh...I'm sorry to hear that :|
@@carlottarobbins7005 it's fine I'm used to it.
*sigh* Social interaction with fellow teens is like a flip of a coin. It can either be glorious or a nightmare. Some people genuinely wish to not have this social life that you so badly want, because they got given the bad hand by the nearly RnG-esque luck that is the people around you. Regardless, should your mother ever choose to loosen the reins, all I can say is best of luck to you, and I hope you get to be around the good people for the most part.
This is just amazing!
My school's play had singers that sound seriously just like these guys. My school did VERY WELL!! I was so happy and impressed by the play of this my school put on.
I cry every time...
I love how this song goes from pessimism to optimism
I'm singing the beginning of this song to my friend for her birthday...
Grace Maijala You have to let us know when you do sing it to her!
Don't know if that's Evil Friendship or Exemplar Friendship.
Out There lyrics:
"Sanctuary"
[FROLLO]
The world is cruel
The world is wicked
It's I alone whom you can trust in this whole city
I am your only friend
I who keep you, feed you, teach you, dress you
I who look upon you without fear
How can I protect you, boy
Unless you always stay in here?
Away in here
(spoken)
Remember what I've taught you, Quasimodo
(sung)
You are deformed -
[QUASIMODO]
- I am deformed
[FROLLO]
And you are ugly -
[QUASIMODO]
- And I am ugly
[FROLLO]
And these are crimes for which
The world shows little pity
You do not comprehend
[QUASIMODO]
You're my defender -
[FROLLO]
Out there, they'll revile you as a monster -
[QUASIMODO]
I am monster-
[FROLLO]
-Out there, they will hate and scorn and jeer
[QUASIMODO]
Only a monster
[FROLLO]
Why invite their curses and their consternation?
Stay in here
Be faithful to me -
[QUASIMODO]
- I'm faithful
[FROLLO]
Grateful to me -
[QUASIMODO]
- I'm grateful
[FROLLO]
Do as I say
Obey and stay -
[QUASIMODO]
- I'll stay
[BOTH]
In here
[FROLLO, spoken]
Remember, Quasimodo. This is your sanctuary
"Out There"
[QUASIMODO, spoken]
...My sanctuary...
[QUASIMODO]
Safe behind these windows and these parapets of stone
Gazing at the people down below me
All my life I watch them as I hide up here alone
Hungry for the histories they show me
All my life I memorize their faces
Knowing them as they will never know me
All my life I wonder how it feels to pass a day
Not above them, but part of them
And out there, living in the sun
Give me one day out there, all I ask is one
To hold forever, out there
Where they all live unaware
What I'd give, what I'd dare
Just to live one day out there!
Out there among the millers and the weavers and their wives
Through the roofs and gables I can see them
Every day they shout and scold and go about their lives
Heedless of the gift it is to be them
If I were in their skin, I'd treasure every instant
Out there, strolling by the Seine
Taste a morning out there, like ordinary men
Who freely walk about there
Just one day and then I swear I'll be content
With my share
Won't resent
Won't despair
Old and bent
I won't care
I'll have spent one day out there!
Let us all rise for the quarantine anthem. * stands up with hand on chest *
His voice is amazing!!
This is so fricken good
This song hits me so hard in the feels , I have certain traits of my appearance I hate. No where near as bad as quas but I don’t like my nose or feet lol. Point being he doesn’t see his differences as a good thing and instead feeds into the lies and gets into a deep depression over it which is very relatable to people in today’s world ❤️❤️
WHERE DOES HE KEEP ALL THE AIR FOR THAT LAST NOTE AFTER SINGING THE WHOLE SONG I JUST CANT
This musical is ludicrously good
Remember Quasimodo...
Our line has always ruled with wisdom and strength.
Imagine if Ralph Fiennes and Eddie Redmayne performed that song in their roles as Judge Frollo and Quasimodo, in the live-action version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Is it bad that when he sang one day and then paused, I expected him to belt MOOOOORE?
It is. He might have died.
I mean...it's another musical by the same author, so...no?
This ain't Les Mis baby
I love this movie so much
The musical version is so much more powerful than the film.

This comment is for Alan Menken, the most integral part of every Disney film he composed for. His genius melodies elevates the material and captures the emotional beats perfectly.
I love musicals that are hard to sing! 😀💜
As someone who is autistic and was bullied because of that this really hits home.
Kayli McGinnis No way I’m autistic too!
h193013 thats cool time hear. I hope you had a better experience growing up than I did.
Amazing
4:19 insert How to Train Your Dragon theme here
this song suddenly reminded me of 'jack's lament' from a nightmare before christmas
Amazing story about mental abuse in its vivid form.
Love this movie.
I… cant believe i was able to see this in person. Disney really missed out by putting Frozen instead of this on Broadway.
Will never forgive Disney for choosing Frozen over this masterpiece of a musical
I'm using this song to widen my vocal range. Very effective, theres only a few bottom notes that I'm having trouble with but I'm doing a lot better yee
Congratulations! 🌹
I realized Frollo was right: in the cartoon people throws food at Quasimodo and make fun of him because he's different, like Frollo said
In all honesty, I still prefer Tom Hulce's version from the movie. It's the one I grew up with and I'm more used to. Plus Hulce's voice is just so distinctive, warm and has a bit more passion to it. With that said, this is easily my second favorite version! This guy has mad pipes:)
who's here cuz of covid
I like this guy's voice better than movie!Quasi's, but I like the way the song is sung better in the movie. Heck!
I would love to see Ben Platt play Quasimodo. I think he would be perfect!
I thought the same thing! Although, I love Arden too.
Holy shit yesssss
I don't think his voice would fit the character or the setting that much tbh;;;
He is a great actor but his vocals in my opinion don't really match the setting of this musical
He hasn't got the tone in my opinion
Always thought it was weird that they substituted in the word “curses” rather than “calumny” in this version. Surely it’s not because they were afraid that the audiences wouldn’t understand the word, when this version incorporates some of the more adult elements to the book. If it’s good enough for the rated G Disney movie why not the play?
And you know what, if kids have to crack open a dictionary to understand what he said that’s probably not the worst thing in the world
