I grew up in a a racially blended family. My dad was as white as they came, and my mom was M'ikmaw (Native). Of all the kids, I was the only one who looked White. Everyone else had distinctive skin or hair or something. That came with it's own issues. Accepted by few on either side of the racial line and seen as a half-breed by both. . I faced racism in my teens all the way to recently (now at the age of 50). So you'd think I'd identify with the X-Men.
    Nope.
    Ghost Rider.
I remember my cousin sharing his Ghost Rider (Johnny Blaze) #1 with me and I was hooked. Here was a guy with his own inner demons, who was a loner, who dug cool bikes like me, and who lost a father figure. (My dad walked out on us on Christmas Day back in '77.) Ghost Rider was cool as shit and I saw myself in him. I struggle with anger issues and a massive temper - it's my own inner demon. I work on it every single day.
I ride a custom bike now likely because of Ghost Rider. I wore a MC patch on my back for four years likely because of him
Now the Rider (Robby Reyes) is rocking things on Agents of SHIELD and I am digging my first "super hero" genre TV show ever. My love of classic muscle cars meets my favorite hero.
Now I'm a father to two beautiful girls who share my love of comics and geek culture. Both are artists like me and the youngest loves to ride with me. So when they say something like "Can we go check out some comics" or "Are we going to see Suicide Squad" I say "Hell Yeah we are!". When someone says "Let's put Guardians of the Galaxy on" I say "Hell Yeah and pass the popcorn!" When my oldest shows me her tattoo designs or the youngest shows me her hand-drawn comics, I remember that comics did more than shape my life - they're still shaping my girls'.

I’m a 26 year old man. I don’t care what people say, I love comic books. I never got REALLY into them until a little after college. And now I continue to read them. Superheroes are an escape to me. They’re great stress relievers and they help keep my head up high. I don’t need to read how depressing the world is. I already know that. Marvel and DC give me a feeling of hope. And that’s why I love reading them. Daredevil is my favorite character because he’s the representation how you can overcome any obstacle no matter how bad things get, no matter how handicapped you are, no matter how much fear you feel, you can always get back up. I just thought I should share that.

My favorite hero (if you couldn't tell by my profilpicture) is Superman. He's my favorite for many different reasons. I love his origin story. His powers are incredibly cool, though I do prefer when they depower him a bit.
But the thing I love most about his character is his personality. His love for people, his compassion. He's selfless. A guy that just wants to do the right thing. That's what we should all aspire to be, in my opinion. Some people think he's boring. But we live in a very dark world. People nowadays love damaged and darker heroes. And I do too. But I feel like we need heroes like Clark to balance things out. It's in these times that characters like Superman and Captain America shine brightest.
A long answer, but yeah, Superman's my favorite

Spider-Man is my favorite; hands down (thwip). Say what you will about the run as of late, the mythos behind Spider-Man is the greatest in comicdon in my humble opinion. He IS the EVERYMAN, yet also simultaneously represents the greatest potential that lies within all of us. He is stronger than your average person, but weaker than many of the other comic book deities. He is more durable than most, but nowhere near invulnerable. He may participate in a universe-spanning conflict to determine the fate of all existence, but still has to get up for work the next day and (for most of his history anyway) lives paycheck to paycheck. Being a hero doesn't necessarily make life easier for him- it makes it harder. However, he does the right thing because that is what needs to be done, and he has the POWER and RESPONSIBILITY to do it. The weight of the world is on his shoulders, but he carries it so that the stars don't fall out of the sky for all of us. He's the best of what we love about Superman, Batman, and ourselves all rolled into one. 'Nuff said... ~_~

this was an amazing video. thank you so much. some people don't see the beauty of comic books and the depth they carry, but I can imagine almost everyone at any comic con does. hopefully someday, I will go to one (a new dream worth fulfilling!). videos with these kinds of messages inspire people, rob, and I can't thank you enough for all the positivity you bring to an internet that needs it.
as for favorite heroes, I always loved the x-men. they are my favorite superhero team. sole hero, though, is someone between batman, superman, and ultimate spider-man (i mean peter parker, but miles is still really awesome).

I love comics. High school was pretty shit, and I always received negativity from people, girls and guys. My intentions were always good though, and I never let my anger and frustration consume me. I'd always just go back to characters like Spiderman and Captain America because they just gave me a sense of hope. I was Peter Parker lol. I got beat up, I got harassed, but I got through it. It was ultimately my will and my determination that got me through it, but those stories certainly kept my spirit lifted and my mind focused. I'll never forget being the only one there that brought trade paperbacks to school to read during study halls haha. No fucks given

I have to say, my favorite superhero is Invincible from Image, or Skybound, whatever. The reason for that is, that aside from all the crazy alien wars, the planet smashing, the alternate dimensions, at it's core the book is about just normal people going through the trials of life. I got even more attached to Invincible because i started reading it just at the right time so that his character arc, going from a childish teen to young adult and onwards kinda aligned with my own. so i could relate to a lot of the story.
We love comis, cause they help us look at our problems from a different angle. It's always easier to solve somebody else's problem than your own, and when you see a character having pretty much the same problem as you, it makes it easier for yourself ti think about it and find a solution.

You know, I'd say my favorite superhero is Thor, although i'm having a hard time figuring out the relatability there. My Favorite comic character is Dick Grayson. It didn't start out that way though, it started with Nightcrawler. I used to be a huge Marvel fanboy and I thought Nightcrawler and the X-men were the greatest thing. I was born and raised Catholic and I loved that I got a character in comics who was catholic as well. But around 2012 when I was a sophmore in high school my love for marvel started dwindling, i wasn't enjoying any of their non comic media and their comics were becoming convoluted. Around that time i started to heavily get into DC. It was like a whole new world, a whole new batch of stories. This is where I fell in love with dick grayson.
I always used to think Nightwing was cool, loved robin on the teen titans, and I have the name Grayson. So naturally I became invested in the character. But as I started reading more and more (batman and robin when dick was batman, black mirror, grayson, new 52 nightwing) I realized It was more than just a character for me. For the first time I felt like I connected to a character, like a character was based off of me. From his quips, to his determination, to him making up rhymes during battle, to him always making fun of his butt, to his friends to his relationships. I was never much an outcast in school but I dealt with similar problems to Dick in terms of parents ect. Bottom line is I never felt more connected or in tune with a character until I read about Dick Grayson. For that I thank comics for everything its done for me in my life, and giving me a character to look up to.

Thank you so much for the amazing video Rob, it's instantly become one of my favorites. You touch so well on why we love comics; yeah, the action and all that is fun to read, but it's that reliability that makes it so special. That's why I love The Flash so much. There's this amazing, awesome clip of Flash from Justice League Unlimited (I think) where he takes in the Trickster without violence, instead he talks him down. The Flash, to me, represents who I strive to be as a person. Despite all the terrible things that have happened to him, he's not cruel, he's not vengeful. He understands, and the Flash doesn't just take down villains. He helps people. That's why the Flash is my favorite superhero.

In the movie "Superman Vs. the Elites," there was the debate over whether or not superheroes should kill super-villains. Sometime during the movie, a super-villian dies, killed by someone I can't remember. Superman took off his own cape and laid it over the body. This is one of Superman's villains, and he still made an effort to give the body some measure of dignity because it was a life.
I love Superman. Seeing someone act so selflessly and so nobly and with such sincerity... I've been a writer all my life, and I can't describe the sense of hope I get from Superman taking the high road. I know I can never be that good, but I can try.

my favorite hero is aquaman. nobody expects much from him but he still does everything in his power to help people. he's also a family man which is pretty rare in comics. i love the fact that he's torn between being a hero or a king or being a husband and a father. the mundain is all he really wants. i love the fact that he created his own worse enemies and constantly has to deal with them. he's ran away from his problems too. abused his power. people may think he's lame but that's what makes him so awesome. no one expects anything from him.

I enjoyed this video. It made me think about why one of my favorite superheroes is Iron Man.... Even before he was movie popular. No matter what happened to Tony Stark from losing his company, homelessness and alcoholism he always found a way to come back and win. That's an attitude that I have always tried to aspire throughout my troubles: divorce, homelessness and I am still here. Keep up the excellent work Rob, it makes a difference!!

That's what I like about comicbooks. Whenever you sit down and read them, it doesn't matter the character, you go on a journey with them. Perhaps that journey takes a few issues, but you learn something at the end about the character and hopefully about yourself.

Additionally, Green Lantern is my favorite super hero. I have food allergies, addiction problems, and issues with depression. But I can see past all that and overcome it all when I put on my Green Lantern ring. I realize it's just a piece of plastic, but it's really so much more to me. I have harnessed the power of will and overcome so much thanks to characters like Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Kyle Raynor, Sim Baz, and now Jessica Cruz.

My favorite character from Marvel is either Doctor Strange or Dr Doom.
From DC, It's John Constantine, I just think he's the most amazing character dc's ever made because of all the depth he has, the miserable life, The moral code and wanting to do the right thing no matter how tough the situation and that moral code trapped between layers of self depreciation and a facade of selfishness. Just think that's super deep.

Batman is my all-time favorite superhero. I have a chronic illness and I’m frequently in the hospital. Ever since I was a kid, Batman has always been my beacon of hope. He always gives everything he has and then some to accomplish his goals. He’s a mortal man who fights alongside gods and immortals with nothing but willpower and intellect. He drives to me to never give up or loose hope. He’s sacrificed so much for the people around him both in and out of the cape and cowl.
I’d honestly be in a much darker space had I not been introduced to the Dark Knight Detective. 🙏🏾

When I was younger I loved Spider-man. I got my start with him watching the 90's cartoon series. Spider-man was my favorite super hero most of my life because I could relate to him, I felt that he had the most compelling villains (Venom such a boss!) and found that his TV show was the best one at the time.
Now that I'm older (28) I find myself more drawn to Daredevil and Batman. Both are mortal men without much in the way of super powers - Daredevil has his superhuman senses and Batman has incredible intelligence. What makes both of them interesting is that turned themselves into heroes through hard work, determination and diligence. They compensate for the fact that they're mere mortals by training tirelessly, through mental and physical toughness and peerless levels of self-discipline. As an adult I find their example of working hard to achieve their goals to be what resonates. Maybe in a couple more decades my fave will change again. :) Thanks for the video Rob, really got me thinking.

I love comics because they can be anything you could ever possibly want them to be. There's just something truly magical about comics that captures the imagination and the feeling that anything is possible in this fantasy world of heroes and villains, ancient beings, cosmic entities, gods, sorcerers etc.

Always enjoy your personal takes on things. It's uplifting.
As far as favorite character, through all the years of retcons and additions I lost my attachment to all my old faves as a kid. But in a nutshell the one thing that stands out is that Peter David did things with the Hulk & X-Factor that Dave Sim was doing with Cerebus. Those were some of the most entertaining comic runs I ever read.
The two Doc Sampson issues he did, Crazy Eights in the Hulk, and the psycho analysis of the X-Factor team (been 2 decades, forgive me for not having issue numbers to reference) are my high watermarks for character studies in comics. His takes on Dr. Banner & Quicksilver were brilliant.

Awesome video!!! (This is a bit long so bare with me) As a long time fan of comics you've hit the nail on the head. I'm 31, black and grew up in Georgia. Reading comic books as a kid, helped me understand that being different isn't a bad thing and after joining the military and traveling the world, it made me realize that the whole world was so different, but beautiful in a million and one different ways. For me X-men is by far (and always will be) the greatest super hero team of all time (and I'm a die hard DC fan) because I could relate on some level to their persecution, just by growing up in Georgia. As for Solo heroes, I have to hand to it Batman because even though he is just a man, he is also something so much more. To the point where even Darkseid respects him. Now that's saying a lot. A being possibly on par with Superman showing respect to a human who has shown on many occasions to be something different and something far more than the rest. It made me feel like I could do the same thing. To be something much more than what people may perceive me as. It was inspiring on so many levels for me.

I have a few heroes I enjoy; Cyclops, Invincible, Superman, Tony Stark, Cap, and Batman (the list goes on), but I also enjoy villians like Joker or Ozymandias. I like to believe this is related to what Rob said about finding yourself in a character. We may strive to be a symbol of justice like The League, but at the end of the day, we all have a dark side that we must accept and comics can help us realize this by way of augmenting that truth through multiple characters, heroes or villians. My point being that stories help guide us through who we are or who we think we are to the truth. Great vid, Rob.

I always loved the Incredible Hulk because he's an misunderstood character, his raw power, and the way he emotes with only using a few words. He's not a monster, just a powerful being created from an innocent scientific man named Bruce Banner; he's deep down a gentle giant, but people do not understand that and do not leave him alone or at peace which causes him to rage. He asks to be alone so he can calm down and not cause harm, but no one gets that. Even people outside of comics don't understand that. They treat him like the characters in the comics treat him. And he's green, my favorite color and he's just awesome.

Well said, Rob. I think the same points can be made about music, movies (roleplaying games) or any kind of art or nerd culture in general. As much as I don't like to characterize things as "escapism" I think there is something to be said about the loyal affection many folks have to the characters, stories, and experiences that they have grown to love or get excited about. I know I do. For me, a lot of this stuff has to do with trying to reconnect with the joy and wonder of my adolescence, to put it in really sappy and nostalgic terms.

I love comics because comics gave me a world where I can have fun and just don't think about other stuff for some moments and I love Spider-Man the most because not just because he is relatable but he makes mistakes and tries to make up for it. When I read Kraven's Last Hunt, I remember Spider-Man saying "There is no Spider! There is just me! I am a just a normal guy- Who got tapped on the shoulder by fate. Just Peter Parker. That's my weakness. That's my strength." I love him because he is relatable but also inspiring for me.

My favourite Superhero, doesn't exist in any written Comic. Rather, he exists entirely within a superhero roleplay that some friends and I play called 'Legacy of Heroes'.
The reasons I love him are two-fold, his potential to be completely O.P. and his attitude.
His name is Clark C. Cabbage, but he is better known as The Metronome. Clark has a grumpy outlook on life, and only goes out because his Heroism is only just stronger than his laziness. Oh, and he has the power to have any random power at any one time.
To explain, an example is required: During one encounter Cabbage rolled his power, and got the ability of 'Healing Coma'. Being completely healthy, he just fell on the floor for a turn. The very next turn however, he rolled the power of 'Plot Control', and proptly decided to wipe his enemies from history.
His potential for overpoweredness is what makes him the most volatile of all the powered beings in our little Universe.
One of has written the first few 'episodes' and put them up, I bet he'd really appreciate the attention.

high school was really rough for me, if i told my whole story im sure itd resemble a life time movie. i read batman and punisher max like crazy in high school. which as i think about it now, represented the warring sides of me. batman: noble self sacrificing strong immense self control righting wrongs within a moral compass never truly letting himself cross out of it. he fights back by being the best he can be in every way. and as someone whose experience every kind of abuse under the sun i admired the ability to come back without having to resort to that violence. batman showed me that u can fight back and still be better than the horrible people in ur life. punisher was the other side that was full of anger and bitterness, the part of me that wanted to make the people who hurt me, hurt just the same if not more. my need for some sort of vengeance or justice. comics was where i could retire to and lose myself and find some sort of outlet in and admire. now a days the heroes i relate to the most include x- 23 and i found my self heavily relating to jessica jones in the alias comics.i pretty much come and go from different comics and stories but the point is no matter where i was or am in life, theres always a story, a character, an arc that makes me feel less alone, makes me feel like i can be better and sometimes it shows me how. i love that about this medium, that a woman like me that came from nothing and should have no prospects can go to a comic book store and a for a few bucks find my next hero, find the next moment im looking at words on a page that perfectly encapsulate how i feel, find new inspirations to keep going. thanks for the video rob u always hit everything dead on.

What you said about relating really resonated with me. For most of my life, it was all about the X-Men. The way they stood up to discrimination gave me hope... but then along came batwoman. I hadn't read comics much at all as an adult but here was this character who was everything I could ever aspire to- and being gay didn't hold her back at all!

There is not one simple way for me to describe why I love comics, but I love the... sense of wonder, that anything is possible if you just put your mind and heart to it.
And that's why I love Iron Man, while the armors definetly don't hurt, what I love the most is how Tony can see the possibilities in everything, always with one foot on the future and one in the present.

Thank you, Rob, for making this video. I know that you didn't ask for this, but the character that I identify with fully is definitely Alex Wilder (obvious, I know). When I first heard about the Runaways series, I immediately clicked with him, because he was like me in so many aspects. We're both blerds with a love for superheroes and a hope to one day receive the love of our fathers. His duplicitous behavior's not unlike mine as well. Out of all the characters in the Marvel pantheon, this 16-year old African American from Malibu is whom I identified with most. With his return to comics imminent, I'm just excited to know that his story arc will be continuing. That's pretty much my connection to Alex Wilder.

Spiderman and the X-Men were my gateway Hero into comics, I didn't read comics growing up and I was introduced into Spiderman via the 1994 TV series, that show gave me a Spiderman I found very relatable and heroic for all the scorn that he received despite all the good he did, in addition to the X-Men TV series that was a perfect match for a Black kid that was constantly mocked for being Black.
Spiderman and the X-Men understood what I was experiencing as a Kid and helped me understand that.
