I don't think it would work as a whole movie.. You have to know the character before you can appreciate what he did for the kids in this story.. However, it would work as part of the movie..like say, Captain Marvel lost his way .So the Wizard send him to the hospital to help inspire these kids but in the end it wasnt him that inspired the kids but rather the kids are the ones that inspires him..Now how touching would that be in a Shazam movie?
This is how I see heroes. They save the day and eventually forget what they are fight for. Once they remember why they are fighting. It makes them stronger and it keeps there heads held high.
This is why I love the current marvel actors. They visit these children and are kind and fun and represent the characters that those kids look up to and love.
Alex Ross’ favorite superhero is the original Captain Marvel. No other artist puts in as much work making the character looking as powerful and stoic as he really is than Alex.
Shazam is pretty cool. It's really fascinating to think about Shazam's eclipsing of Superman for a time. Imagine Fawcett Comics suing DC for Superman and Shazam being the most iconic hero.
The entire series of storys is fantastic. They are Superman peace on earth, Batman war on crime, Wonder Woman spirit of truth and Shazam power of hope. All released as oversized one shots or as the collected Worlds Greatest Superheroes with an 5th story featuring the Justice League dealing with a viral outbreak and the mistrust of the world population in their ability to handle the situation as told by Martian Manhunter. All 5 storys are well worth read if you can get your hands on them.

Bruh that’s so woke of you to say. You’ve just shifted the whole political landscape of the United States. I never thought pure stubbornness would be the solution to everything, but you’ve cracked the case. Congratulations my friend.
Captain Marvel is one of my favorite DC heroes next to nightwing and big barda. Ive read Justice and i own Kingdom Come as well as the trials of shazam before flashpoint/new 52. This video literally made me cry.
I thought Shazam was the first to fly and have ridiculous strength, traits superman didn't have at first right? Wouldn't that make superman a knock off? I could be wrong though.
He was the first to fly but the idea of superman is that his powers are limitless and grow ect. like leaping to flying this is only for golden age earth 2 superman, not earth 1 silver age superman or modern day superman of today they can fly from the start.
Technically that was (before all the extra discontinuity) that was Earth 1 superman. Or prime. One or the other. Cant really remember, but yeah. Basically. You're somewhat right, and wrong. Superman was first, Shazam was second. Universe's are different. Things happen differently.
Any time customers at my work ask for something , i tell them they need to say the magic word, so they say please, and i tell them the magic word is SHAZAM!
Beautiful and really encapsulates perfectly what Shazam should be at his core. The mortal with powers of a god and why I can't wait for his triumphant return.
One of the best stories ever told! It's very underrated! It captures everything good about comics! The passion of crafting this story shows in every panel and shows why he's not just some Superman knockoff.
Mr Rob how come DC's animated movies kicks ass and they can't seam to get it together on live action films anyways the new DC death of superman is amazing
from the five issues that were released by Alex Ross and Paul Dini, this one of Shazam is my favorite. It is just so beautifully done and humanizing and made me fall in love with the character that is Shazam
Most people these days don't know the real shazam/Captain marvel the think he can't be just as strong as superman but more the fact that dc shit on him for their golden boi's superman and batman 😭😭
Hey Rob! I love your videos. I have been wanting to see a video on The Marquis of death versus Franklin Richards or The molecule man, but I can't find any videos like that, but your videos are so interesting I would love it if you could do a versus video with one of these characters versus the Marquis. I know it's normally not your thing to do vs videos but do you think you could do that?
Rob used to do vs videos, but not so much anymore. I know he's done a vs with Franklin, but idk about the marques of death. He does have a video about him, but not a vs one.
fuckbreakfastwe gotbutter you know, you're actually right about that. I didn't think about that. A better matchup would probably be between the Marquis of death and protege then. Protege was pretty powerful himself.
Aaron Kolatch yeah protege is nice. But death was so insanely strong he destroyed everyone countless times sooooo idk who matches him outside of beyonder and living tri oaa.
@@kirkforthewinWrong. The same agreement has existed since the seventies. DC can't use the name Captain Marvel in a title or advertising material for a comic, movie, etc but they can still always call the character that within the story itself. In fact, if you check out the newer comics by the great Mark Waid, they're headed back in that direction by calling him "The Captain."
@@Red-Wolf-Ben Calling him "The Captain" is not the same as calling him "Captain Marvel." So no, they're not heading back in that direction because Marvel owns the trademark to the name Captain Marvel. Also, DC has now moved to call Billy Batson's Alter Ego "The Captain" instead of Shazam. There's no direction to rechristen him "Captain Marvel," down the road, because they simply can't.
@@kirkforthewin Heading in that direction isn't the same as already being there. And again, there's no reason they CAN'T call him Captain Marvel, the deal hasn't changed in decades. They can't call the comic or movie that, they absolutely CAN call the character that.
@@Red-Wolf-Ben If they could they would, but they haven't since the 70's that should tell you something. As I pointed out DC is moving towards calling him "The Captain," that's it. They're not moving to call him Capt. Marvel. They're not moving to call him Shazam. They're moving towards calling him "The Captain." The Captain and Captain Marvel are not interchangeable terms.
Rob, in this story, the character is correctly identified as Captain Marvel, not Shazam. It's OK to call the character by his name. Marvel is not likely to try to sue you over it. :D You can save the 'Shazam' name for either the old wizard or, in the modern comics, Hoodie Marvel. :D
I was thinking the same thing, he's Captain Marvel in this story. It was especially weird how he kept calling him "Shazam" when talking about the Golden Age comics, where Shazam was never even the title of the book. I know the old boy means well, but come on...
oh my gosh i've finally done it....i started out with your alternative realities explained video....stayed to learn more about the x men...became taken away with your sumarizing of comic concepts, enjoyed the journey of the event stories, and loved when you started letting loose on the channel. 'this persons about had all their living done' 'man let me tell you something guys let me tell you something mannnnn'. i started from the first available video, even gave dc a try which i didn't like and liked before watching and occasionally commented but watched everything besides marvel and spiderman because i couldn't get into the stories. i feel hella accomplished and like i graduated from comic high. haha. looking forward to your new current stuff.
The most powerful scene I've read with Captain Marvel is from the "Justice" mini-series and only lasts one page. Four of Superman's greatest foes have beaten him and they are about to kill him. Captain Marvel takes them all out quickly. The sequence starts with a flash of lightning, and is over so quickly that if it were filmed, I bet it would be filmed in bullet time, and end with the sound of the thunder as it finally reaches the scene.
I hate it when people call him Shazam. Like seriously call him Captain Marvel. I have the opinion that anyone who accepts the name change isn’t a real fan.
The problem is that he's 5-dimensional. Meaning "Mxyzptlk" or however it's spelled, is just one 3-D cell connected in hyper-geometry to a larger whole that doesn't fit in the whole of our space and time. The guy we usually see in the comics is a shadow on the wall relative to everyone else around him. Catch is, he knows he's making shadow puppets relative to him, while everyone else IS a shadow-puppet. Again, relative to him. :) This may be the key here. Whether the guy is biological in our sense of the word or not, he does exist in a 4-D hyperspace (4 dimensions of space, 1 of time) that we can approximate and understand, if not experience. And the deal with that is going to come down to understanding his geometry. How do all of his cells/faces/aspects connect? Is it regular geometry? Is it congruent? Is there a center to it? Because one way to inflict a fatal wound on someone like that, is to disturb his own understanding of himself. Make his geometry irregular where it was once regular. If he has a center, get rid of it. For a simple example of that, take a hyper-cube/tesseract. It has a center cell, a cube in the middle. But what happens when that center gets damaged and doesn't hold? Does the thing degenerate into a hyper-figure that only has a single point at its center (they exist)? If so the wounded hyper-figure can survive, but without a center cell OR a center point, it might not. So how do you damage the center cell of Mr. Myxtlplk? :D Maybe you convince his central aspect of a certain, viral idea, or solipsism. Maybe you tell an aspect of him that he's only a comic-book character who has always, ONLY, been two-dimensional. Hand him the literal comic books where he's appeared and let the virus of _doubt_ about his own hyper-geometry set in. :) But yeah, good luck finding the center-cell of the guy. If you thought a mainstream 3-D multiverse was hard. . . ?
They call me Jojo There was one story I read where Mr Mxyzptlk took on his true form and fought superman and superman was done with his BS and trapped him in the Chamber in the phantom zone with gold kryptonite and that was the end of his character until crisis on infinite earths happened.
Shazam was one of the most powerful characters in the golden age of comics, now he's just the shadow of Superman who's the biggest Gary Stu in comic history.
poweredbygarri1 no true but ok. I mean we’ve seen Thor and Hulk get whooped many times. Especially Hulk but Superman is like made to be OP. He’s like Goku really. Always breaking his limits that don’t exist lol
You are definitely a marvel fan. You wouldnt say that about Robert Reynolds,Tony starks, T'challa or blue marvel. You make seem like if a character is intelligent then he is a Mary sue.
poweredbygarri1 Your only argument to defend Superman is bringing Marvel to the conversation just as an attempt to make your points valid. You're just proving my point that Superman is indeed a Gary Stu and you don't have any points to back this up.
i think shazam is so special as a character as he has that child innocence that can’t be corrupted. other hero’s like superman for example can start to lose their way and question there morals but children almost always have the ability to clearly see right from wrong (especially when they have the wisdom of solomon). that is what makes captain marvel such a great hero- the fact that he’s a kid, he’s billy
I work in the medical field and this story inspired me in many ways. I got boxes that has superhero symbols so we can put the IVs or chemotherapy and tell the children that it's a superhero formula and it makes them stronger. The smile and hope in their eyes is priceless.

He is. DC filed a lawsuit against Fawcett for copyright, yet they were the one who ended up completely copying Captain Marvel's character.
Thank you for doing what you do Rob. This is the kind of story I would never know about if you didn't tell it. And it's an important story in my eyes.
BUT WHERE IS SHAZAM IN DC REBIRTH!? lol
Alexander Hill fr fr
Alexander Hill He's coming, I heard it's supposed to be around December
Александр Царуш there saving him for something big
Black Adam showed up in Dark Nights Metal, but that's all we got.
Shazam is where he NEEDS to be, we the DC Fans just haven't seen what he's doing.
I just rewatched this video and I'm crying now.
Yay captain marvel aka billy bastion
Tevya Smolka *Batson**
The only Captain Marvel that matters to me
yup me too
Amazing, none of what you said was correct.
Carol has been dead to me for years.
Any time customers at my work ask for something , i tell them they need to say the magic word, so they say please, and i tell them the magic word is SHAZAM!
Who is this Shazam? This is Captain Marvel. Anyway I should most probably go I find a copy of this story.
I hope his movie is gonna be good.
The movie wont be about billy batson . It is gonna be about carol denvers
nihat yildirim Now I'm unsure what hole we're going down, but Billy is getting a movie
nihat yildirim I see were you could get confused because they have the same name but they are. Both getting movies.
kelvin joyner oh okay didnt know that just knew about marvels cpt. Marvel
nihat yildirim DC even has The Rock playing Black Atom
I simply love this Captain Marvel story, especially with Alex Ross Art!!!
It's just something about Alex ross's art that just infuses with the story so well
Beautiful and really encapsulates perfectly what Shazam should be at his core. The mortal with powers of a god and why I can't wait for his triumphant return.
Honestly the idea of shazam was amazing.it still is..i don't see him as a knock off superman at all.totally different and unique from superman.
One of the best stories ever told! It's very underrated! It captures everything good about comics! The passion of crafting this story shows in every panel and shows why he's not just some Superman knockoff.
Beautiful art & story.
10:50 - Kids love to be in danger. Let's go out and endanger some kids.
Existential Error lol
This is one of my favorite comic books and I never thought Rob would cover it. Wow
Blue lantern enthusiast...
I really love the enthusiasm you bring to these videos. I don't even read a lot of comics but I love the mythology and your retelling of the stories.
Mr Rob how come DC's animated movies kicks ass and they can't seam to get it together on live action films anyways the new DC death of superman is amazing
Rod Snyder and directors who don't know crap about comics
MrKrispycoon
DC has no need to ..they have always dominated comics and animation .
from the five issues that were released by Alex Ross and Paul Dini, this one of Shazam is my favorite. It is just so beautifully done and humanizing and made me fall in love with the character that is Shazam
Most people these days don't know the real shazam/Captain marvel the think he can't be just as strong as superman but more the fact that dc shit on him for their golden boi's superman and batman 😭😭
Ik that kinda make me dislike supes
I FREAKIN WEPT WHEN I BOUGHT THIS BOOK!!!!!! IT WAS SO MOVING, PAUL DINI AND ALEX ROSS'S INTERPRETATION OF EMOTION ON THE PAGE.....BREATH-TAKING....
Marquee of death already killed them both numerous times if you read his comic
fuckbreakfastwe gotbutter you know, you're actually right about that.
Dude this was one of my favorite stories so thanks rob for reading it to me man
Still love Cap. Marvel. Should got his name back. Damnit #SHAZAM is the wizard not the caped hero. #JakeHunter88
He'll never have the name Capt. Marvel again. Marvel has made sure of it, since it's trademarked.
Now I remember why I loved Shazam as a kid...
BUUTT WHERE IS SHAZAM. WHERE WAS HE IN DARK KNIGHT METAL. WHERE IS HE IN NO JUSTICE. WHERE IS HE
One of the best stories ever, you did this story Justice Rob, well done!!!
This story is about Captain Marvel, not Shazam.
Not me bawling my eyes out because I'm a sucker for hope in the face of despair
Rob, in this story, the character is correctly identified as Captain Marvel, not Shazam. It's OK to call the character by his name. Marvel is not likely to try to sue you over it. :D
You can save the 'Shazam' name for either the old wizard or, in the modern comics, Hoodie Marvel.
Captain Marvel his name is Captain Marvel
not anymore
skwarrior14 doesn't matter
You mean Shazam?
His name is & always will be Captain Marvel
HDCLAN H he sure doesn’t mean that Danvers shiksa.
That is a good one! And then what does he say? "It's going to be okay, Superman." Such a simple, but powerful line.
Shazam is going to beat dr Manhattan
Loafys World lol
Loafys World Dr Manhattan can separate atoms and Shazam being as powerful as he is cannot touch Dr Manhattan.
Blasphemous
You guys forget!!! Magic!!
I am starting to feel like this was your best comic review yet Rob. I just loved this story. Need to get the comic now.
I hate it when people call him Shazam. Like seriously call him Captain Marvel. I have the opinion that anyone who accepts the name change isn’t a real fan.
Bob I go by that same theory. By the way his Comic Book name is Shazam! DC comics can still call him "Captain Marvel"
stellvia hoenheim CAPTAIN Marvel came way before Marvel comics.
stellvia hoenheim Captain Marvel actually does has a team. Mary Marvel, Captain Marvel jr. and Uncle Marvel.
I thought the reason why DC change his name is because Marvel took it for their movie
Yifei Hong nobody cares for Carl Manvers.
He wasn't the only one that needed that lesson....thank you.
how to un alive mr. Mxyzpltk
Autistic Heresy lmao easy..find a way to ask the presence for help
The problem is that he's 5-dimensional. Meaning "Mxyzptlk" or however it's spelled, is just one 3-D cell connected in hyper-geometry to a larger whole that doesn't fit in the whole of our space and time. The guy we usually see in the comics is a shadow on the wall relative to everyone else around him. Catch is, he knows he's making shadow puppets relative to him, while everyone else IS a shadow-puppet. Again, relative to him. :)
This may be the key here.
But yeah, good luck finding the center-cell of the guy. If you thought a mainstream 3-D multiverse was hard. . . ?
Hit him with a phantom zone gun and scare him to say his name backwards.
He will be ripped in half as a result.
They call me Jojo There was one story I read where Mr Mxyzptlk took on his true form and fought superman and superman was done with his BS and trapped him in the Chamber in the phantom zone with gold kryptonite and that was the end of his character until crisis on infinite earths happened.
An excellent show sir- well done. And Alex Ross- dude, he should be exhibited in museums- he's THAT good....
3:20 HARAMBE
No lie, I had to dry my eyes more than once on this one... especially the little girl. 😭💖
Shazam was one of the most powerful characters in the golden age of comics, now he's just the shadow of Superman who's the biggest Gary Stu in comic history.
Nah, superman got his ass kicked many times and died once. Mary sue would be thor or hulk with their plot armour
A character who does a brain surgery on himself is definitely a Gary Stu.
poweredbygarri1 no true but ok.
Have fun with your poorly designed, guaranteed to fail keyboard bud...
This story made me cry when I read it. It was beautiful. I'm tearing up right now.
Congrats on the move Rob! Hope it goes well. And also this was a awesome video. 👍
Alex Ross is the patron saint of nostalgia
