I just read her autobiography. She was supporting her family even at this young age. Never really had a childhood and yet she has a sunny outlook on life.
@her parents split up when she was quite young. Her mother's second husband was in vaudeville and he was the one who started her performing. Her mother was not very stable and her stepfather was an alcoholic. She said that even when she was twelve she often had to travel to jobs alone and was very lonely staying in a strange hotel by herself. If anyone did that with a child today they would get into big trouble. As time went on she became the only breadwinner and even after she was married and was no longer at home she continued to support her parents and her siblings.

Don’t get me wrong I grew up listening to the cast album of my for a lady with Julie Andrews. I basically can’t bear the film because of that. And in my opinion no matter what people say it’s just not a great film where is Mary Poppins actually is. So more power to Julie for where feet took her. She was very deserving!

I'm currently reading the first of Julie's two autobiographies and now admire her even more. She didn't have an easy childhood and worked very hard to help her family.
The times were tough, my Grandmother also worked as a child picking berries, and paid by the pint. Labor laws have helped kids not have to go through such, but alas that didn't prevent the children from working the family farms. Builds character.
I agree with you about that final note - it's beautiful and pure and powerful. I feel I should point out, however, that one soprano singing a high note is much easier to pick out against an entire 100 voice choir than 10 people singing at lower pitches.

Just Prior to becoming famous Julie Andrews accompanied her mother and step father on the theater circuit across the UK. In Manchester they stayed a digs run by my grandmothers sister. After they left she found a box of empty food cans under the bed, which must have been eaten cold, and one of Julies shoes. Mr great aunt loved theater people and if she had known how hard up they were she would have fed them for free. She wrote a letter to their next digs regarding the shoe and they wrote back asking her to keep it and they would collect it next year. Julie appeared as a star on the West End the next year and my great aunt kept the shoe as a memento. It had belonged to Julie Andrews.

Just writing this the day after our Queen has passed away. We must now start getting used to singing God Save The... KING. And here is the best clip I know. This is very moving. When the audience left the theatre that night of November 1st 1948, they will have had to pass rubble everywhere left by the Luftwaffe blitz and still far from being totally cleared. Interestingly there was still another 13 days before the birth of the now King Charles lll. Watch this clip to the very end. Julie Andrews will be 87 on 1st October 2022, and here she was exactly one month over 13... and a very young 13 at that. How great she is here. In her dazzling career, she never bettered this moment. The Royal Command Performance is over. The 52 year old King George Vl had less than four years to live... the stresses of the Second World War had exacerbated health problems already existing, and within months of this concert, a planned tour of Australia and New Zealand was postponed after an arterial blockage needed a lumbar sympathectomy just four months later in March 1948. And watch the audience at the very end as they look up at the Royal Box. One can sense their concerned affection. And Julie, from the moment when you excitedly run on to deliver the showpiece to the whole evening, to that top note you deliver at the very end, you made me proud to be British. Loved the way (Sir Thomas Beecham?) the conductor slowed down the opening lines for you to deliver as a solo, and then watch the brio of the conductor as he asks the massed singers to give the rest of the anthem their maximum volume. @@typingcat You obviously meant to say "royals" and yes, people adored the royals back then, a lot more than today and that goes for all of the monarchies that existed and still exist. People still adore the royals, albeit less so overall and with less general support. They are dignified symbols of their countries like any other. Where the world thinks of Trump when they think of the US... The world thinks of The Queen who can do no wrong, when they think of the UK.
My next door neighbour is 89 so has now seen three monarchs. In the future, barring an unfortunate circumstance when the monarch dies early, we won't see the likes of Elizabeth again and many people will see three or maybe even 4 over their lifetime.

Years ago, my mom worked for ABC in Indy. Whenever celebrities were in town, she would take me with her so I might have an opportunity to meet them. I will never forget meeting Julie Andrews. She came to town to tape a promotional for Indy's traditional replay of "Sound of Music" on Christmas evening. She probably met millions of "everyday people" yet she made eye contact, shook hands, and left everyone with the impression that she was thankful to have met them. What a lovely lady!

The Sound of Music, imho, is the best movie ever filmed. Julie Andrews is truly incomparable among actresses. And Christopher Plummer was one handsome dude!!!!! I fell in love with him and never fell out of it in the 50 plus years since. Julie losing her voice was a loss for everyone.
Christopher Plummer is still a magnificent actor, but was a bit of a character in his youth. Max Ferguson's book "And Now, Here's Max" includes tales of some of Christopher's pranks when he was a young actor.
Most of the actors are still alive from this movie, so I've never understood why a modern follow up to the movie has never been made. It doesn't have to be a musical, just a family drama showing all of their lives.
Watching this makes me feel nostalgic and happy and sad at the same time even if I wasn’t alive then. What a beautiful memory captured in film. Thank God for filmmakers ❤

She really is royalty and so above today's standard hollywood level. Its clear she was beautiful super talented young girl 🌸 she's always had such warmth, charm and this elegant form of exuberance 🌠 Nowadays actors get oscars for only 5 or 6 lines of substance in a film and most aspects around them are cgi'd. But looking at the best of the best from screen's golden era (James Stewart, Julie Andrews) they worked very hard, speaking rich dialogue, doing lots of physical movement, lots of skill, and singing, dancing, riding horses, pitching baseball. They performed with body, soul & mind.
After studying in England for a year, I came home to America, and went to a festival for 4th of July. When they started "My Country Tis of Thee" for the audience to sing, I went into autopilot and started singing God Save the Queen. Everyone turned and looked at me, while my whole family burst out into laughter.
Long ago when I studied in England for graduate school I did the same! At the time I felt embarrassed, but in hind-sight it could have been a good opportunity to talk about how many English tunes were adopted and are still sung and played today in the United States.
That’s hilarious. I’ve done the same, singing with an award winning high school choir in America. We used to sing for retired military in nursing homes. It was one of the songs we would perform on request. It brought many a tear to the WWII elderly and their spouses.

I had to recite "the pledge of allegiance" every day in German class (and as a senior we had to say it in German because we weren't allowed to speak English in class), and then just after I graduated my (WWII era) grandmother took me to a public function where they said it, and on autopilot I started reciting it in German. Julie Andrews is perfection at every age...such clarity in her voice and such poise. It's a bit unsettling that so many people out there are unaware of the ties between Great Britain and the USA. Imagine those early settlers, having decided that they wanted to form an independent country, and having realized that becoming independent could only happen through war, also realized that, like every independent country, they needed to create a national anthem. And how better than to use the pre-existing melody and just make up the words. I didn't mean to rant. I'm a retired teacher and I'm always appalled at the poor education our kids are receiving both at school and at home. Sigh.......
Yes, you are correct. Julie Andrews is A+1, so much better than any 'normal person' -- anyone can grant that. You are also correct that there was a pre-existing melody for "The Star Spangled Banner". btlfn14 Ouch. That sort of stings. The Star Spangled Banner was a poem written before it was put into a melody and made an anthem. True the melody was pre-existing but the words were not just "made up". That poem was written as as witness to the invasion of Fort McHenry (hence the original title). The United States of America was created for many reasons because there were many wrong things happening. Our bill of rights, yes rights, is our first ten amendments in our constitution and they were created to right previous injustices such as Article III not forcing soldiers to be quartered in our homes. I don't want to go into all of them but that is just one. You also seem to be implying that we had an unneeded war to become independent. It seems to me that if you are a retired teacher that you should know that England would not let us have an independent nation. Seriously. That's why we declared our independence and officiated it with the Declaration of Independence. We wanted to be equals. ("We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal…") England had a monarchy which clearly did not have equality established. Of course you could go on to say that we had slavery at first and that not everyone was created equally and in the early twentieth century we had segregation, and those were faults, terrible faults and very bad things happened that should not have happened. We fixed those things. We are all now equal, and it seems that things are better in Great Britain as well. I'm actually appalled that you think so little of America, we have accomplished great things, you know. Sorry for this big paragraph and everything. I wanted to voice my opinion and say that I agreed with LadyoftheLake LK. They phrased it quite well. So let's celebrate our ties and differences and just be happy countries. I hope you see a different side of Americans from this comment and not just those who decide to say 'Murica and stuff like that.
We aren't talking about the Star Spangled Banner. The song "America" (My Country Tis of Thee) is the tune of God Save the Queen (or King) with new words made up by Americans.
btlfn14 But the actual US anthem is “the Star Spangled Banner,” also a British tune of the day. It was a drinking song and since one almost needs to be drunk to make the almost 2 octave range of the verse, that part makes sense. It would be nice to have an original American anthem, words and music authentically American, not some songs with tunes borrowed from the Brits. I remember as a kid, we had many “semi-official” anthems to choose from just as kids today have a variety of not at all official-but more honest- anthems of a pop nature.

It was even estimated that every home in England had at least one copy of the album. I think that even without having a close friendship with the royal family, they have been quite aware of their career. Even when Princess Margaret was in the USA (1966 I think) she practically took Julie as the host to every event.
When I hear God Save the Queen, being American, I always want to sing My Country 'Tis Of Thee. :) I actually wish we could have just heard Julie sing the entire anthem without everyone else joining in. I understand why they did but would have loved to just hear her voice singing. One of my favorite actresses of all time.

Several things come to mind watching this. 1. what a sweet voice Julie had. 2. girls in those days were not trying to be grown up before their time...imagine a girl that age dressing like that now. 3. The sentiments of the national anthem on that occasion were not heeded by the so called god... The King failed to recover from a lung operation, and died in his sleep on 6 February 1952; he was aged only 56. As this concert was 1/11/48, less than 4 yrs later he was gone. At least he got to hear Julie's voice though he never knew what fame she achieved. The concert was on my mothers birthday and I was born the year the ming died.

Try looking up her singing the Polonaise at 13. Towards the end she goes incredibly high and pure.

A pure voice of a 13 year old, not pretentious. One of the best child voices I've ever heard. Some kids are always trying to sound like some artist or sound a lot of older than they are, manipulating their voice.

Just Prior to becoming famous Julie Andrews accompanied her mother and step father on the theater circuit across the UK. In Manchester they stayed a digs run by my grandmothers sister. After they left she found a box of empty food cans under the bed, which must have been eaten cold, and one of Julies shoes. Mr great aunt loved theater people and if she had known how hard up they were she would have fed them for free. She wrote a letter to their next digs regarding the shoe and they wrote back asking her to keep it and they would collect it next year. Julie appeared as a star on the West End the next year and my great aunt kept the shoe as a memento. It had belonged to Julie Andrews.

Only in the eighties she started to sing with lower keys but she was always a soprano she started as a coloratura soprano and in the seventies and eighties her voice deepened and she became a second soprano but never a mezzo.The singer who sang in Mary Poppins and The Sound of music was a lyric soprano with high notes Allen Jones never a mezzo.

This is very moving. When the audience left the theatre that night of November 1st 1948, they will have had to pass rubble everywhere left by the Luftwaffe blitz and still far from being totally cleared. Interestingly there was still another 13 days before the birth of the now King Charles lll.
Watch this clip to the very end. Julie Andrews will be 87 on 1st October 2022, and here she was exactly one month over 13... and a very young 13 at that. How great she is here. In her dazzling career, she never bettered this moment.
The Royal Command Performance is over. The 52 year old King George Vl had less than four years to live... the stresses of the Second World War had exacerbated health problems already existing, and within months of this concert, a planned tour of Australia and New Zealand was postponed after an arterial blockage needed a lumbar sympathectomy just four months later in March 1948.
And watch the audience at the very end as they look up at the Royal Box. One can sense their concerned affection.
And Julie, from the moment when you excitedly run on to deliver the showpiece to the whole evening, to that top note you deliver at the very end, you made me proud to be British.
Loved the way (Sir Thomas Beecham?) the conductor slowed down the opening lines for you to deliver as a solo, and then watch the brio of the conductor as he asks the massed singers to give the rest of the anthem their maximum volume.
Startling to think that the odds are that Julie is the only single one of those assembled on stage and in the orchestra pit who is still alive as I write this. A great clip.
Made even greater for me by seeing my boyhood hero Danny Kaye standing immediately behind Julie... and joining in the joke conga exit with Crazy Gang members (the King’s favourite comedians).

People still adore the royals, albeit less so overall and with less general support. They are dignified symbols of their countries like any other. My next door neighbour is 89 so has now seen three monarchs. In the future, barring an unfortunate circumstance when the monarch dies early, we won't see the likes of Elizabeth again and many people will see three or maybe even 4 over their lifetime.

Years ago, my mom worked for ABC in Indy. Whenever celebrities were in town, she would take me with her so I might have an opportunity to meet them. I will never forget meeting Julie Andrews. She came to town to tape a promotional for Indy's traditional replay of "Sound of Music" on Christmas evening. She probably met millions of "everyday people" yet she made eye contact, shook hands, and left everyone with the impression that she was thankful to have met them. What a lovely lady!

The Sound of Music, imho, is the best movie ever filmed. Julie Andrews is truly incomparable among actresses. And Christopher Plummer was one handsome dude!!!!! I fell in love with him and never fell out of it in the 50 plus years since. Julie losing her voice was a loss for everyone.

Christopher Plummer is still a magnificent actor, but was a bit of a character in his youth. Max Ferguson's book "And Now, Here's Max" includes tales of some of Christopher's pranks when he was a young actor.

Most of the actors are still alive from this movie, so I've never understood why a modern follow up to the movie has never been made. It doesn't have to be a musical, just a family drama showing all of their lives.

In my Opinion is Julie Andrews a Woman with High Class and Respect. I just love her.
She really is royalty and so above today's standard hollywood level. Its clear she was beautiful super talented young girl 🌸 she's always had such warmth, charm and this elegant form of exuberance 🌠
Nowadays actors get oscars for only 5 or 6 lines of substance in a film and most aspects around them are cgi'd.
But looking at the best of the best from screen's golden era (James Stewart, Julie Andrews) they worked very hard, speaking rich dialogue, doing lots of physical movement, lots of skill, and singing, dancing, riding horses, pitching baseball. They performed with body, soul & mind.
After studying in England for a year, I came home to America, and went to a festival for 4th of July. When they started "My Country Tis of Thee" for the audience to sing, I went into autopilot and started singing God Save the Queen. Everyone turned and looked at me, while my whole family burst out into laughter.
Long ago when I studied in England for graduate school I did the same! At the time I felt embarrassed, but in hind-sight it could have been a good opportunity to talk about how many English tunes were adopted and are still sung and played today in the United States.
That’s hilarious. I’ve done the same, singing with an award winning high school choir in America. We used to sing for retired military in nursing homes. It was one of the songs we would perform on request. It brought many a tear to the WWII elderly and their spouses.

I had to recite "the pledge of allegiance" every day in German class (and as a senior we had to say it in German because we weren't allowed to speak English in class), and then just after I graduated my (WWII era) grandmother took me to a public function where they said it, and on autopilot I started reciting it in German. Julie Andrews is perfection at every age...such clarity in her voice and such poise. It's a bit unsettling that so many people out there are unaware of the ties between Great Britain and the USA. Imagine those early settlers, having decided that they wanted to form an independent country, and having realized that becoming independent could only happen through war, also realized that, like every independent country, they needed to create a national anthem. And how better than to use the pre-existing melody and just make up the words.

btlfn14 Ouch. That sort of stings. The Star Spangled Banner was a poem written before it was put into a melody and made an anthem. True the melody was pre-existing but the words were not just "made up". That poem was written as as witness to the invasion of Fort McHenry (hence the original title). The United States of America was created for many reasons because there were many wrong things happening. Our bill of rights, yes rights, is our first ten amendments in our constitution and they were created to right previous injustices such as Article III not forcing soldiers to be quartered in our homes. I don't want to go into all of them but that is just one. You also seem to be implying that we had an unneeded war to become independent. It seems to me that if you are a retired teacher that you should know that England would not let us have an independent nation. Seriously. That's why we declared our independence and officiated it with the Declaration of Independence. We wanted to be equals. ("We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal…") England had a monarchy which clearly did not have equality established. Of course you could go on to say that we had slavery at first and that not everyone was created equally and in the early twentieth century we had segregation, and those were faults, terrible faults and very bad things happened that should not have happened. We fixed those things. We are all now equal, and it seems that things are better in Great Britain as well. I'm actually appalled that you think so little of America, we have accomplished great things, you know. Sorry for this big paragraph and everything. I wanted to voice my opinion and say that I agreed with LadyoftheLake LK. They phrased it quite well. So let's celebrate our ties and differences and just be happy countries. I hope you see a different side of Americans from this comment and not just those who decide to say 'Murica and stuff like that.
We aren't talking about the Star Spangled Banner. The song "America" (My Country Tis of Thee) is the tune of God Save the Queen (or King) with new words made up by Americans.

btlfn14 But the actual US anthem is “the Star Spangled Banner,” also a British tune of the day. It was a drinking song and since one almost needs to be drunk to make the almost 2 octave range of the verse, that part makes sense.
It would be nice to have an original American anthem, words and music authentically American, not some songs with tunes borrowed from the Brits.
I remember as a kid, we had many “semi-official” anthems to choose from just as kids today have a variety of not at all official-but more honest- anthems of a pop nature.

It was even estimated that every home in England had at least one copy of the album. I think that even without having a close friendship with the royal family, they have been quite aware of their career.

How wonderful, that this talented lady has given so many years of joy to so many, through the beauty of her voice! One of my happy childhood memories is watching The Sound of Music every year with my siblings and mother, and now I do the same with my own children.

Several things come to mind watching this.
1. what a sweet voice Julie had.
2. girls in those days were not trying to be grown up before their time...imagine a girl that age dressing like that now.
3. The sentiments of the national anthem on that occasion were not heeded by the so called god... The King failed to recover from a lung operation, and died in his sleep on 6 February 1952; he was aged only 56. As this concert was 1/11/48, less than 4 yrs later he was gone. At least he got to hear Julie's voice though he never knew what fame she achieved.
The concert was on my mothers birthday and I was born the year the ming died.
