"There's no benefit here over the intell version (SP10) unless you value better battery life or artificially an OLED screen" ... Nice summary
This is by far the best discussion on this product I have come across. Thank you for being so direct. I feel like i talked to a knowledgeable friend.
Cameron - didn't watch this until after I set mine up and tried using it last night - and my reactions are almost identical to yours. I have to ask "what is the real purpose?" Although, I have to be fair, that instant on/off, even after overnight in my bag, was great, AND only 2% drain as well.
Now I'm more curious how the SD X Plus performs vs intel and how much or how little the difference is with the X Elite.
I'm still on the fence between going all in for the OLED model, or buying the cheapest base model, then just upgrading the storage.
*Keeping the OLED panel difference out of the equation that is.
Good qs. I’m thinking of getting the X Plus as I don’t push machines hard and it’s also my way of minimising risk by getting a cheaper machine.
If I like it, then I can upgrade the storage myself. I think that’s quite inexpensive.
Really glad you’re pushing the surface pro 11’s emulation. It’s great that it can compete even through emulation. And it’s a sigh of relief for me because a use I know my day to day programs will work
Let’s not forget this is comparing against the "older" Intel chip and not the upcoming Lunar Lake. Interesting to see that the Snapdragon performance and power differences are relatively minimal to Intel given that fact. I think it’s safe to assume Intel’s upcoming Lunar Lake chips will be highly competitive if not downright disruptive in terms of compute and battery efficiency. Especially since that was Intel’s major focus with Lunar Lake. The tech world is alive again! ❤
Great review. Are you possibly going to review the surface laptop 7 13.8?
Thanks for this detailed content.
I think the SP 11 is a good device but they need to stop with the “better than MacBook Air M3” propaganda…
They were obsessed with beating out the MacBook but in reality it doesn’t look like it’s even close to me. That makes consumers lose a lot of confidence. They should have just compared to surface pro 9 in my opinion.
Held off upgrading from a SP7+ to a SP10 business for this review. Thanks.
Not seeing much benefit for me to switch to arm just yet.
Great review. How’s the screen? Is it a bit “grainy”?
A bit. I believe it is from the pentile OLED arrangement and touchscreen.
What is the battery life on the Snapdragon Surface Pro using a standardized battery test like PC Mark 10?
This is the Review should be. Its for Consumer perspective.Good Job Sir.😊
Thanks for the review. Better than most other reviews.
Can you test this? Leave in standby mode both (intel & snapdragon) for 10 hours and post how much battery lost.. It's important to me.
Thanks!
Thanx man geeat reviews
Thanks! Doing the review we all want to see n know. I'm assuming brutal Doom won't be a problem. Any idea on music software/DAWs?
Been using Rewind on Mac (similar to Recall) for over a year now and it save me hours of rework. One example, forgot to print a confirmation page that I later needed. Another use case, get a daily summary of all the work you have done for the day.
It is the 21st century Dude, Mac's don't have touch screen or pen support...End of story
@@RK-um9tu What if he doesn't need that. Pen support is very niche.
did u try to benchmark it with cinebench or geekench 6 ?? im really curios what its single and multicore scores !!
Thanks for the review. With your comparison focused on the SP10, I have a Surface Pro 9 presently... would the upgrade be worth it in your opinion? I mainly run editing software (cap cut) and Publisher and Photo editing software. I'm not a gamer, but I am getting more into ai creation with (Dream Machine, Unreal Engine) ...I have a Intel Iris Xe Graphics installed and I've only had one issue notice pop up for one of the platforms. There is an Intel update, to the Intel Arc & Iris Xe Graphics, but I've read issues with upgrading to what is being recommended for this machine.
If you upgrade SP9 i5 -> SP10, I think its worth it. You'd be looking at a decent bump in cpu and GPU performance
If you're upgrading a SP9 i7-> SP10 , there is only tiny CPU uplift, and just a 10-35% uplift in GPU, so may not be as worth it.
You'd also get NPU on the SP10, for windows studio effects, but its really only useful so far if you use those features on video calls, so ymmv.
You may have seen my video on it, but the SP10 Core 5 (135U) & Core 7 (165U) are essentially performing almost exactly the same for the SP10 generation, so unless you need 32gb of ram or something, just save the money and get the 135U version, that is if you end up deciding the upgrade is worth it for you.
Very good review, short time after release and points that really matter to consumers.
Does snapdragon x elite support eGPU?
No
I am the guy who said don't bash the new Snapdragon PCs because of gaming.... (on the SP9 5G review) And I appreciate that your opinion is no longer the same, also thanks to improved compatibility. Other than that it's a matter of priorities. For me battery life is important and having the device stay cool to the touch too. ARM is a turning point, as you said, because either Intel mananges to match the native efficiency or ARM is going to replace it for a lot of things as more and more apps will go native (in both cases we win). I think Intel is going to fight back so I am in no hurry to get an ARM device.
I was a fan of the Surface since the early days, but at some point stopped buying the pro and went with either the larger book or the smaller go... (I stil have my SP2 and SP3, but only use regualry my SB3 15, also have my SB2 15, and my go 2 M3). Personally I don't game (again matter of priorities), but I work with my devices. I do hope Snapdragon comes to either the Go or to an 11" pro as I want to use it as a tablet too (pro is too big and hot, so I currently use iPads in addition to the Go).
I noticed that on the X Elite, at least compared to the SP9 Intel, the time it takes going from portrait to landscape has VASTLY improved. It’s iPad level speed now. Is it as quick on the SP10 business?
The targeted customers are for workers and business owners maybe students but i dont know any student who bought the pro 9 sq3. Is it a gaming device, no but compared to the recent surface arm surface pro 9 sq3 being able to play some games is impressive to how far it comes. For those who no experience with arm chips we noticed from november through to mid last year the preformance just sky rocketed for work. The developers were being aggressive in working with apps on the arm chip. Our pro 9 sq3 went from 12 hrs a day to 14/16 hours in those months. The usage for me and my workers are pretty generic from checking emails, to web browsing, to online meetings and handling large spreadsheets. My team and i are curious about these elite x chips so we experimenting with them now but so far we are impressed
I hope Microsoft will introduce a new SP with the upcoming Intel Lunar Lake once available.
I was waiting for the review on the SP11.
- Would you prefer the LCD or oled display ?
- Do you see a huge different with the battery from the SP10 to SP11 ?
- Anything you prefer with SP11 compare to SP10 ?
-OLED every time
-I haven't had it long enough to say for casual video watching or mundane tasks, but the SP11 can play games for longer as it peaks at 32W vs 40W on the SP10 and also has a larger battery.
-SP11 looks exactly the same as the SP10 other than oled screen, weight is the same. I guess having more AI TOPS is a benefit, although I haven't found a way to leverage that capability at all yet.
yo ! any chance of an egpu test ? really interested to know ;)
i agree. basically what i'm waiting to hear
It cannot do eGPU (at least at this point in time.)
@@cbutters why ??
@@cbutters hello ! thx, did you test it ? how did you do it ?
@@Origam-I I don't need to test, there are no device drivers for NVIDIA GPUs on ARM. (although I hear it is technically possible and there may be people testing this at NVIDIA)
Thanks! Next I'm eager to see Minisforum AMD tablet vs this surface pro 11 XElite...benchmanrks are pretty close for these two, but other factors are still not reviewd, like smooth and glitch-free hardware (including resolution, touchscreen, common use and gaming) and software (ARM compatabililty and performence for non-native apps)
I personally think that Microsoft and other manufacturers are going to press forward with ARM processors and twist the wrists of dev's, to start supporting it more widely. As they need products to compete with Apple's line-up.
For me, it's definitely a mixed bag. Diablo 4 crashes all the time, the last of us doesn't load at all, elden ring (with anti-cheat turned off in offline mode) didnt load, emulation was spotty.
The games that do run, play great with lowering resolution and mixed settings.. but it hasn't been very trustworthy thus far.
I know adobe is optimizing more apps, but It's also a bummer that adobe removes the apps that aren't compatible.. instead of letting us emulate them.
which model and spec were gaming with? I have the x plus 16gb and started gaming already too..
x elite 16gb
Interesting; how does this compare with Macs virtualising windows
Do you like the OLED Screen. been using my OLED and really dont seem great for my Eyes. Also what do you think 16gb vs 32gb. Alot of my work is WEB based and does use alot of Ram?
The ips displays on surfaces are really good, so the comparison with OLED isn't as drastic, but you do get much deeper blacks and contrast, which I prefer. The SP11 OLED screen does leave a little to be desired, many will find it "grainy" I suppose, but I do personally prefer it.
The very first thing I tried to install (Google Drive Desktop) didn't install. Said it was incompatible with the platform. =(
Since ARM snapdragon could run X86 programs. If apple or 3rd party provides X86 emulator for Mac ARM CPU, is it mean that window users could easily switch to Mac OS in the future?
Waiting for Lunar Lake Copilot+ Surface Pro... Hopefully they announce it for later this year...
Given that they both run Windows on Arm, have OLED displays, have detachable keyboards, etc., would you accept the Surface Pro 11 fan noise for higher performance over the Surface Pro 9 5g or Robo & Kala 2-in-1? I love my Robo & Kala, especially that it is so light and fanless, but of course I'd always like better performance.
I would much prefer the Pro 11 over the Pro 9 5g, and would consider that a really big upgrade. not familiar with the Kala though. The Pro 10 vs. Pro 11 is where I don't think it isn't necessarily a better option unless you want a bit better battery life and OLED screen.
@@cbutters Great, thanks! The R&K basically has the same internals as the Pro 9 5g just in a lighter/sleeker Pro X-type body. I have a Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x 32 GB arriving soon, but I'll go to Best Buy to peep the Pro 11. 🤓
Thanks for this detailed reveiw, i really like this device
New subscriber 👍🏻 I’ve been reviewing the Samsung Galaxy Book 4 Edge on my other tech channel
So if you want to choose between Pro 11 X Elite with 32GB RAM and Pro 10 Ultra 7 with 16GB RAM, which one would you go with? both pretty much are the same price
I'd come down to the needs you have rather than the RAM.
So if you primarily do office work go with the Pro 11,
But if you know you'll be annoyed at the worse GPU performance and limited resolutions / GPU features / no eGPU / driver compatibility go with the Intel SP10.
Like I say, I don't see much reason to get the SP11 unless you value OLED and a few extra hours of battery. If you value compatibility and more mature platform and featureset, and especially if you plan to do limited gaming, get the SP10.
Personally I'd pick the Pro 10 over the Pro 11 every day if it were my ONLY device.
@@cbutters@cbutters, thanks , I've already got a Pro 11, but it seems it's struggling to open my 3D files, I have a Pro 7 for Business, which seems to perform better! agree best I upgrade to Pro 10 FB, just would you know how intel Ultra 7 & compare to Core i 7 ?
@@nattaghidavood8618 my review of the sp10 includes a performance chart comparing it to all past surface devices.
@@cbutters@cbutters I've already seen that video, and it was very thorough, tho would be great if you could add Pro 11 X Elite to that , too!
What about fan noise?
I basically want a tablet that can do PC stuff from time to time.
And I don't want any fan in my tablet
Same as sp10 when running device full speed. It turns on way less often though under casual use.
@@cbutters if it didn't turn on during web browsing and watching movies that would be good enough.
I run a core i5 surface pro 9, would I be able to run cyber punk with the help of ur fan accessory?
probably would just get the tiny eGPU with it
Define: "run cyberpunk" :)
It can definitely do it, but you'll have to reduce resolution, but should be pretty playable, and my fan will definitely help keep the performance up.
you'd be able to play cyberpunk really well on the i5 pro9 with something like the GPD G1 or any of the 7600M XT egpus floating around.
Recall is OFF by default. It's opt-in!
hmm, i think oled screen make battery life longer not the processor efficiency...
If you keep it on black maybe, but Microsoft put a larger battery in the OLED version than the LCD version if that means anything..
on bright screens Oled consumes more than LCD
Asus pz13 70 kwh batter
Can I run windows 10 on it tho
no.
@@cbutters studio 2 for me it is then, now gotta figure out how to make it more power efficient since undervolting still isnt an option
Great 👍
No. This sucks.
Really wanted to use this device as my handheld gaming / productivity device.
Did not expect much, just something comparable to my gpd win 4.
This is sad and I will cancel my preorder.
I was so hopeful when they showed the control demo.
Yeah, to be honest I expected more than parity with the SP10. I'm sure natively compiled apps will run quite good and I imagine that theoretically it is a more powerful GPU than intel, but in practice.... it is what it is.
I’d get the minisforum V3 if you want a similar form factor but with a 7840U on the inside. Worse battery life though
@@christianr.5868 I know, but it‘s literarily a plastic bomber and the accessories don‘t even feel half as good as the surface keyboard.
Already thought of it but it‘s just not for me.
@@trumpalumpa9368 yeah I was thinking the same thing. I’ve got my steam deck for gaming so I was just gonna get the surface for productivity. Hopefully drivers improve in the future and we get more arm ports for gaming though
