The song is a true story. Norma lived in a New York apartment where dogs weren't permitted so got a cat named it Dog, and took it for neighbourhood walks! 😀
Before I even knew that this song existed, I named my boy Dee Oh Gee. He was found in a closet in an abandoned apartment. He was tiny. My roommate had a golden retriever named diesel. (RIP D) Roommates gf had a puppy. The cats name is Smoky Dee Oh Gee because he thinks he’s a dog
Tanega worked for a short time at a mental hospital, where she sang and played songs for patients. She spent her summers working as a camp counselor upstate in the Catskill Mountains. Brooklyn-based record producer Herb Bernstein saw Tanega performing while visiting the camp one summer. Impressed by what he saw, Bernstein introduced her to Four Seasons songwriter Bob Crewe. The two men produced a number of recordings that comprised Tanega's first album was released on Crewe's New Voice Records label in 1966. Her first single, "Walkin' My Cat Named Dog", became an international hit in 1966, peaking at number 22 on both the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Charts, and #3 in Canada. Tanega's impetus for the song came from living in a New York City apartment building that did not allow dogs; instead she owned a cat which she named "Dog" and took for walks.
Norma is still rocking, just no commercial hits. She was my first percussion teacher. 40 years after this video she is just as beautiful and her smile just as big. I'd never seen her in a dress or with long hair before. Norma is GREAT!!!!

This was one of hundreds of great top 40 hits that was put out to pasture when radio went corporate in the 1970s and 1980s and from then on only played the same old top 5 and top 10 songs. Simply beautiful. It reminds me of high school. The year it came out I was a senior & it sounds as if it were only yesterday. Music can transport one to a period in life. I had a heavy crush on Elaine Casebeer but I could never tell her. I was so innocent.

i love Norma Tanega so much, she was such a sweet person it seemed, so full of life and smiles it's a shame that she went through all that :( may her memory be a blessing
She has a delightful personality! I was 11 when this song came out. We were reminded of it today when my husband said, “You can call a cat a dog, but it’s still a cat.” We looked at each other and said, “Walkin’ my cat named Dog!” 🐈

This song came on a 45 record which was included with my first STEREO record player.. a Silvertone from Sears.. That was 52 years ago I believe... Too Weird, I still remember the song.. and the words..
Also heard it in South Louisiana on local radio (KVOL AM), in fact while I was attending the Breaux Bridge crawfish festival in about 1966 or so. I have the 45 and was glad to be able to see her perform it. Thanks
Beautiful! This was a hit in UK too. Check out the way Ms Tanega expertly mimes the guitar part, on an SG Junior! Great to see this and thank you for posting:)

Swingin' their feet, swingin' their feet
Dog is a good old cat

What a great tune!
Love the tone of her voice.
Simply beautiful. It reminds me of high school. The year it came out I was a senior & it sounds as if it were only yesterday. Music can transport one to a period in life. I had a heavy crush on Elaine Casebeer but I could never tell her. I was so innocent.
a great classic!
She has nice energy... great smile ... and beautiful guitar 🎸 😍 ❤
I was a teen then. I don't think this is at all weird. I think it's beautiful poetry and song.
AGREED!
I Just Luv This Song, I was also a teenager and this song brings to mind those wonderful times gone by, it's songs like this that are so touching, how music has changed for the worse, but, we have RUclips and for this I am very thankful^^^^>>>>****!!!!!
...who said it was 'weird'???
@@sdovas the video description!

I remember listening to this classic novelty song many years ago on KOY AM 55 in Phoenix, thanks for the memories & posting this.

Hello!!! How are you doing today! Please pardon me for intruding into your privacy but I just wanted to know if you're a fan!.... Stay safe!
When I was a kid in the '80s I had an album called Nutty Numbers and it was all novelty tunes. This was one of them.
1966. I was in 8th grade. Used to (and still do) love this song!!!
Just remembered this song and I still have my single. Sad to see she died in 2019. One of my ‘quirky’ purchases but love it.

i love Norma Tanega so much, she was such a sweet person it seemed, so full of life and smiles
it's a shame that she went through all that :( may her memory be a blessing
She has a delightful personality! I was 11 when this song came out. We were reminded of it today when my husband said, “You can call a cat a dog, but it’s still a cat.” We looked at each other and said, “Walkin’ my cat named Dog!” 🐈
This song was played alot on the local radio station in the mid-sixties. I always liked it. Was so different than anything else on the radio at that time.
Rockin' that SG way back then.
Love it!
a light and airy song makes you feel cheerful
This woman had a great voice and wrote really awesome original songs. Awesome track.✌🏻️👽
Fantastic! I only just discovered norma, have got 3 great songs already. Born in '58, i heard lots of great music as a kid, and this is ker-lassic 60s! Equal to cass elliot in tone? Just as delightful to hear anyway! Can just see her as a great art teacher too. All the best fellow music-lovers.
In 1967! Living in Arica.. Chile I got this 45 rpm.. I was 12 years old!! Oh my God! What a memories.. Norma I love you!!
