Linear drain, MOSAICS could be a PROBLEM. Shower pan prep, waterproofing. Over uneven concrete floor. This video shows step by step how to create a base for the installation of a Schluter Kerdi-Line linear drain, and the process used to waterproof the shower floor before the tile is installed. This will also work for other types of line drains, it is just a method to create a flat pitch for water to flow towards a long drain. The beauty of a linear drain is that allows for shower floor tile options not possible with a traditional small point drain. All the tile options available with a standard drain are still valid, plus the ability to install any other size tile also becomes possible, no longer is the tile size limited to mosaic tiles no larger than 3", Large format tiles of any size up to the size of the shower floor, now become possible. In this video I demonstrate the method I use to create a slope flat floor pitched to the linear drain using deck mud as the base. Foam trays are also an option, however the sub floor to which the tray is installed has to be, flat, level and smooth to accommodate a foam tray and the tray still needs to be cut fitted or extended and modified to fit exactly into the space of the shower floor. Mud, or deck mud, or floating the shower floor has only one needed condition to be possible, and that is that the sub floor be stable. It has no importance how level flat and smooth the base for the mud is as long as it can support the floor. Obviously it still needs to be cleaned before the installation of the base.

Do what we do Sal. Be forced to prep everything without even knowing what kind of tile is being used bc the customer and his wife cant decide!

I just had that exact problem on a job I am finishing up now! Fortunately it was only on one side and small enough that I grooved the grout joints in a few places close to the drain and it fixed the problem. I thought I messed up the float, but that makes perfect sense as to why it happened. Thanks Sal. Awesome work.

Wonder how can you tell if there is a small leak, say one drop a hour, cant tell from the water mark on the wall but still enough to cause a problem later in time.?

I just watched a video yesterday where the guy insisted it was a bad practice to put the floor in after the wall board. Because the cement wall board is now below the surface of the shower floor and will absorb water that will migrate up the wall board. He had demolished several showers done this way and you could see the accumulation of water in the channel left at the edge of the floor. The water had wicked up the cement wall board causing the fasteners to rust. Do you have view in this observation? I'd love to hear from the master. I'm thinking the wall board might absorb the water regardless of it being above the shower floor?

I wish I could edit... I see you are adding the liner on the inside of the shower walls which is absolutely correct to resolve water forming a channel under the wall boards. I didn't finish watching the video yet..Uggg

I just skim the membrane after it’s sealed to correct the slope lines for small tiles.

Hey Sal, I'm a long time subscriber. Please can you do a video on when it's okay to not use spacers. I have just done a herringbone splashback and wish I didnt use spacers. It made it a lot more fiddly. But I feel like not using spacers is bad for some reason. Thanks

Pretty simple, you need a minimum grout line of 1/16", but most times the grout line should be larger ruclips.net/video/dRSiCWrgj0Y/видео.html

Great solution simple and well explained.
Is there a preference for the location of the linear drain, close to the wall if plumbing allows?
Did this install need to take into account the tile size to locate the drain, perhaps ?

Linear drains can be installed at any location, and the length is only really important if it goes wall to wall. You want to know your drain size to build the shower to it.

Why not just use hydroban and laticretes linear drain to avoid build up when using small tiles.Their moisture cure liquid membrane allows flood test same day if it's a time factor. I had a hard time trusting liquid membranes on pans but they work just as well.
