- In this video I'll be talking about my journey all the way from my high school days until the day I was accepted to McMaster Medical School. I'll be going over all I did well as well as all I could've done better while providing tips for all of you!

Where are you in your journey towards medical school and what are you finding most challenging?
in high school! choosing an undergrad program is the most challenging thing right now. Also, Great Vid! first time I watched a 20-minute video without skipping through it :)
I'm glad you liked it! I agree, it was challenging for me as well. If you are confident that med is for you, health science is the way to go. If not, I would personally do a first year in life science and try out a bunch of different courses and then make a decision. All the best!

As for your second question, it really depends when you want to complete your MCAT. If it's in the summer (which is when most people do), I'd do it twice in the same summer (sort of what I did). I hope that answers your questions!
@Malik Barkat Ali Ali Unfortunately, you can't get into any medical school in Canada straight from high school. In most cases, you do need 3 years of undergrad to apply.

Hello Darius, I just found your channel and I just want to say thank you so much for your videos, they are super helpful and I've been binge watching them. I really want to get into McMaster medical school too! I didn't get in the first time because I did poorly on the CARS and because of some family problems, but hopefully this time around I'll have better luck. Crazy how a 3.96 and 520 MCAT landed you only 2 interviews out of 25 schools across US as well. Is that maybe because the schools you applied to were very top-heavy? interesting nonetheless, keep up the great content on this channel man!
Yeah I think it was a combination of things. I did apply to very competitive schools in Canada and the US but also didn't have the most research or extracurriculars. I appreciate it! Thanks for the support!

Yeah it can be tough because you put so much time and effort into them you feel like it should be enough but there's so much more they look for. Keep humble!

I'm currently a grade 12 student and I will be going to mac for my undergrad this fall, but I'm struggling to find research and volunteer opportunities so I was wondering if you have any tips or info that could help me get involved early? I was supposed to start volunteering at the hospital but missed the opportunity when covid hit.
Your channel is absolutely amazing. I am in my first year of studies in undergrad and all of the content here is extremely helpful and motivating. Please keep it up. Quick question - I heard Mcmaster only looks at the best 3 years of your undergrad. Is that true?
Hey! Thanks so much for the feedback. I'm so happy you're enjoying it! I don't believe that is true. From my understanding they look at all your undergrad years BUT you can apply after your second year and enter after completing your third year of undergrad BEFORE graduating. That may be what you heard? Let me know if you have any other questions!
Hey Darius! So I see you talked a lot about fixing your application by looking for research, clinical and other opportunities. However, doesn't McMaster not account for extracurriculars in the application process? Did you do these for other schools? Thanks, awesome video!!

Darius, thank you for this video. I am an undergrad student at Brock and medical school was not something I seriously considered until I began volunteering at a cancer centre (didnt even want to but thought why the hell not). Unlike you, my GPA the previous 4 years were less than a 3.00 on the OMSAS scale. I am doing what I need to now to make the corrections. Like you, my EC's are lacking (or were in your case LOL). I dont really play sports, but I do have some hospital and I am trying to get more involved although it is hard to do so. Thanks for pointing out that taking a leap into things you aren't comfortable with might be the best thing one can do. If you have any advice to share on what skills or experiences might be best to seek from jobs/volunteer/clubs, please let me know as that is what I am trying to do since I dont have much time so I am trying to get the best I can out of the experiences I get involved with. Thanks!!
Hey! It really sounds like you just need to find what you like. Volunteering can be challenging at times because at least in my experience you aren't able to work on your skills. But at the same time find your role and do that role amazingly. I would look for resources at Brock and really go out there and try some new clubs and volunteer roles. Keep an open mind and really try and see what you like. That's my best advice. It's not always the easiest, but keep trying, you'll find what's right for you. Best of luck!
Hey Darius!! My names Erik im just starting out with my undergrad at MAC, i was wondering did you start out in the life science gateway program or the health science program?
I started actually in physical sciences but transferred to biochemistry in second year. It definitely wasn't the health science program and I'm not certain what the gateway program is.
Hey! just stumbled onto your channel and I'm really enjoying your videos! I just graduated from Western with a 3.8 average and I'm going to write my MCAT this year. I'm lacking research experience but I have volunteered abroad and locally. How can I go about getting more research experience and how should I ask professors (not from western) ?
Congrats on graduating, that's a fantastic accomplishment! I don't have the best research experience but I would reach out if you're able to actually do research there. It also depends which field you graduated from. If you're taking a year off, I would also look for potential research jobs!
Hey Darius! I love these preparing for med school videos. However, when it comes to the GPA calculation I get quite confused on which grading scale is used because every school has a different meaning fo what 3.96 is. What you say a 3.96 is in let's say a percentage. Hope to hear back soon! Keep up the good work
Hey! Yeah it can be confusing but there are generally scales offered by different schools. At McMaster a 12 (our A+ = greater than 90%) was a 4.0. Our 11 (A = greater than 85%) was a 3.9. So it really depends on which school you're at and how they grade because your GPA can't easily be translated to a percentage because it all depends on the school. Does that make sense?

Hey! Do you know how significant first year grades are, specifically for McMaster's med school? Could it solely dictate whether you are accepted or not? The video was amazing and very informative! Thanks
They are important, but no more important than any of your other years. Unless it's drastically poor, I don't think it would solely dictate whether you don't get accepted. You may have to compensate for it a bit with your other years of school, CASPer, and CARS section of the MCAT.

Loved your video! Question: I’m doing my BScN through the University of Ottawa, but I’m doing it off campus (2 hrs away from Ottawa). There’s no research opportunities here, so would it be wise to try and focus more on volunteering to make up for it? I’m starting to get worried 😕
Thanks, glad you liked it! Interesting, there are no academic opportunities where you are? But yes, I would focus on what I can control, and if that is volunteering, then focus on that. I would also consider which programs I would be thinking of applying to and see if they need research, and if so, how heavily it is weighted. I didn't have a ton of research and I still got in, so I wouldn't be worried but instead find a plan that works for you and follow it. If that's volunteering in meaningful positions, then follow that.

I'm going into grade 10 in high school right now and I really.hope.i can get into med school somewhere here in Ontario. Do you have any tips as to what courses i should take in grade 11 and 12 as well as if summer school is needed? Love ur videos
Hey, in all honestly as long as you take the prerequisites to get into the undergrad program you want you should be good. No medical school considers highschool in Ontario. You could consider IB or AP courses as they would help prepare you for undergrad, which in turn will help you gain a competitive GPA from the get go.

Did you ever consider going to the states for your undergrad? Also, how did u get into undergrad at MacMasters - apparently it is really hard! Could you do a tips/advice video on that?
I did consider it but when I was applying to university I wanted to study as well as play football. As such, McMaster had the best opportunity for me to do both. It was a while ago haha but I took the International Baccalaureate program and got very good grades. From there, I just applied through OUAC and thankfully didn't have to write any essays. But yeah, I will keep that in mind to create a video about it!
@@DariusMed awesome! makes sense. Yahh I'm in the IB program rn and was debating if its worth spending so much time prepping for SATs. Ofc my first choice in Canada is Mac but its always so risky! Thanks for your input!
Yeah I actually wrote my SATs way back when. If you have the time, I would just to keep my options open. But be wary, schools in the states can be pricey!!

I have a similar gpa (and the exact same mcat and cars score!) as you :) I'm in 3rd year and currently applying this cycle to 4 schools in Ontario. I guess it's a bit late now since the application has been submitted...but any advice for how to prepare/what to do between now and when interview invites come out?
Fantastic! Sounds like you've put yourself into a great position. I would purchase the book I mentioned (Doing Right) and start thinking about your medical ethics. The good thing is that you're in a great position and it's just about waiting for those interviews! I would continue to volunteer and look for research, as incase you aren't accepted this year, your next year application will be even more competitive. I would also look into a book about the MMI and Standard Interviews, because those can also help depending which type you get invited to. Lastly, I would talk to some friends and try and see who is interested in creating an interview practice group so that you're able to hit the ground running when you get that invite! Best of luck!

Well it may have taken a little longer but I did get in so stay positive!
I am in IB right now in gr 10 but I am currently dropping out as if I continue doing IB, limits what courses I do. Will this negatively affect me? Like apparently pre IB like gr 9 and 10 are baby food while gr 11 and 12 is where it really gets hard. I just do not know if dropping out was the best decision. I am a regular 92 average guy that is on 4 sports teams and a medical science team. So not really sure if dropping IB was the best decision. I want to do my undergrad at Mcmaster in the health science program and then apply for medical school. Just wanting some tips from you Darius would be great. Much appreciated and hope you write to me.

Hey, I would recommend a health science program as they do a great job getting students into medical school, especially at McMaster.

What we’re your IB HL’s and SL’s? My school offers HL Chem, Bio and English; and for my SL’s, Math, French, History
My HLs were Chem, English, and History. My SLs were Math, Physics, and Spanish!
Hey, Darius I really like your videos. I had a question, I am in 2nd year and unfortunately due to poor health, I had to withdraw from a course recently. Can a WD on transcript actually affect my admission to Med school? Do you have any idea?
Thanks! I had 2 cancellations on my transcript from first year and it didn't affect me negatively. I wouldn't imagine it would affect your ability either and worst case most schools allow for a section to explain any inconsistencies on your transcript which I would recommend using when you apply!
How about that Canadian from Kansas city chiefs, who became an Medical doctor in Canada and won the superbowl? Maybe you shouldn't have quit football? Just a thought?
Honestly that man is an absolute beast. Such an inspiration. I played a very different position and it is very challenging as a Canadian quarterback. In any regard, I could not be happier with how things have played out so far. But again, such an inspirational story.

I'm in IB and taking HL bio and HL chem and my parents still think that IB is easy and even if I get a 6 it's not enough
I'm sorry to hear that. Those are very challenging classes in a very challenging program. A 6 is amazing and you should be very proud! That will definitely get you into a good university. If I remember correctly I think I scored a 6 in HL chem and I think it worked out pretty well in the long run haha.

Hey Darius, I’m not sure whether u covered this but I was not able to get into ib due to a vacation, but I’m in grade 10 now with my average in gr9 being a low 90 can I still get into McMaster then med school?
Yes fam keep grinding ur marks matter the most in grade 11 and 12. Make sure you have good extra curriculars and volunteer work as well.
Hey Darius, Im studying first year in Life Sciences at McMaster right now and I've been trying to find opportunities where I can volunteer/research in a medical environment at the hospital. Based off of you experience at McMaster, are there any tips you can provide to help me find these opportunities, perhaps within McMaster itself? Hoping to major in Biochem as well!!
I would talk to your professors to see what opportunities. You can also find different professors at McMaster and just cold email them that you're interested. Offer to volunteer in their lab first and then you could do courses and other research with them after. Good thing is to start early!
After high school what test we have to give for medical school

There are some scholarships you can apply to, but not many if any that cover your entire tuition. If you do MD/PhD I'm pretty sure tuition is covered.

Yeah... I honestly don't know. That was what was so tricky about once I didn't get accepted the first time because I really didn't know what went wrong and what to improve on. I think I was lacking in research and my extracurriculars but I guess I'll never know!

@@zackattack1025 I did not have research experience per se on my first application because I completed my research project during my 4th year and I applied during the cycle after my third year. I say per se because some applications ask about future work and I included it in what I was going to do, but not what I had completed.
