    • @nxtgenmd
      @nxtgenmd  5 лет назад +5

      Thanks so much! Ohh mannn so many tips :) I'm so excited for you! I genuinely enjoyed my entire undergrad experience. Looking back, I know that there were hard times but once you're on the other side, all you remember are the good times... and there were a lot of them. So my biggest advice to you is to find a way to enjoy the hard work that you're going to have to put in. Go to class, do your homework but remember to get involved with as many extracurriculars as you can fit in. Keeping up a great GPA is probably the most important thing that you can do in undergrad, but to do that you're going to need to enjoy the process as well. That's my philosophy anyways.
      Stay away from negative people and don't listen to the ones that are going to keep telling you that you won't make it. Try and be friends with the professors too. But be genuine about it... not because you want a reference letter lol. I've got a whole video planned for tips to premed students. Congrats on getting in :) What university are you going to be at?

      NXTgenMD I’m going to McMaster for life sci... see you around maybe lool! Yea that’s a really good mindset, I tend to get overly stressed when to much work comes around.. so all those extracurricular s that’s the school offers (sports, clubs etc...) can be used on the med application? And thanks!!

      @@sufom7201 aha that's awesome! Definitely come say hi if you see me :) I can definitely relate. Being stressed out is a normal reaction, but you need to learn to overcome it. And yes 100% when its time for you to apply to med school, having extracurriculars with and outside of school are really going to make you stand out at most of the Ontario medical schools pre interview invite and even afterwards!

    Hey NextgenMD! Just got an interview invite to Mac and I was wondering if you could make a video about what makes Mac unique, what you like most about the program, and how it compares to other schools in Ontario. Thanks and keep it up!

    • @nxtgenmd
      @nxtgenmd  4 года назад +2

      Hey eezz5 Congrats on the interview! That's awesome that you got one and I hope it goes well for you :)
      Unfortunately, I don't really feel like its a good idea for me to speak publicly on university comparisons - I only have experience at one of the medical schools after all and everyone is going to have their own opinion as to why they like one school or another. Personally though, I love the program and have found that I've really learned a lot so far. The model of instruction is based around PBL in small groups and you can read about that more on their website and in some online testimonials. What you want to research ideally, is school match rates and student satisfaction - although these both tend to be very high at all of the Ontario medical schools.
      Luckily, as far as medical school goes, anywhere in Ontario seems to be a good choice for the most part. If you have to choose between multiple programs (that would be an awesome "problem" to have), other important factors will be: where you want to live for the next few years, method of instruction and whether or not finishing medical school in 3 years vs. 4 is something that you'd be interested in.

    Congrats on your Mac acceptance! What would you say about my chances with a ~3.7 and 130 CARS (year 5 UG). Haven't written Casper yet so can't speak for that but I'm usually fine with ethical scenarios. And about the letters of recommendation...would Mac discriminate if you choose to submit 3 from volunteering positions instead of some academic ones?

    • @nxtgenmd
      @nxtgenmd  5 лет назад +3

      Thanks Ally! I would say that your chances are pretty much the same that mine were. Your GPA is slightly higher than mine was which just about levels us off due to my 131 CARS score. I know people who have been accepted with lower scores, but when I was in your position last year, I had calculated that we were still in the lower half of all accepted applicants. Having said that, your CASPer test is going to be very important in determining wether or not you get an interview - as was mine. STAY POSITIVE and be sure to do what you need to when prepping for CASPer :)
      Now for references, I talked about it a little bit more in my most recent video but things are a little different this year - OMSAS officially states, At least 1 of your 3 referees should be academic- or employment-related and 1 should be personal (non-academic). The third reference can be of your choosing."I would not deviate from this official statement if possible. I personally chose my research supervisor and long-time professor, one pharmacist that I had gotten to know very well at Princess Margaret and a children's grief counsellor I had done volunteer work with. Keep in mind that McMaster doesn't view your references as competitively as other schools - if at all. But, you're going to be applying to other schools as well so don't undervalue the reference section as a whole. In my opinion, I really like the idea of having a professor be a referee for you. Having a professor vouch for you shows your ability to excel in an academic setting - like med school. If this is not an option, then just make sure that one of your references comes from a job that you had since this seems to be what OMSAS is asking for.
      Good on you for taking a 5th year, I had done the same thing and think that its a smart move. You have a solid application so far. I remember what it felt like though thinking that my GPA was going to hold me back - be confident and apply broadly. I really hope that everything works out for you :)

    Hello, I wonder about something, and maybe you have the answer to that. If I end my bachelor of science in Dalhousie, located in Nova Scotia. So, when I try to enter McMaster medical school, the GPA and the MCAT requirements will be different from the people who complete the bachelor at McMaster or not? And, is there any different between those who did their premed outside Ontario and who did the premed in Ontario?

      Hi Lughmani :) not sure if this was a relatively recent change, but in the very least, it’s been this way for the last 2 years (since I applied). “All grades from every undergraduate level course ever taken - with exception of courses taken on exchange outside of Canada or the US,” will be used to calculate GPA.

    Thank you for all your help! You have been super helpful. I was wondering if McMaster cares about extracurricular activities because it is not apart of their selection formula. Also, do you know any medical schools in Canada that don't place much emphasis on extracurricular activities?

    • @nxtgenmd
      @nxtgenmd  4 года назад

      Hi Nadia, glad you’ve found the videos helpful 🤙 Unfortunately, I don’t know anything that isn’t specifically stated on the school website, however, its always been my own thought that if its not mentioned in the official breakdown of how they select, then they probably aren’t looking for it - in that regard, I would say that McMaster most likely doesn’t put much emphasis on EC’s pre-interview (but to emphasize , this is not an official statement).
      Sorry I can’t really comment on it anymore, but I would say that when speaking generally across all of the Ontario medical schools, ECs are always going to help with a student’s application. Best of luck :)

    Hello! 😊 Can you post a video about determining GPA using the OMSAS Undergraduate GPA conversion scale? I understand the calculations are also affected by course weights and am unsure how this factors in to figuring out GPA. Like you, my school also used a 4.3 scale. I’m not sure how a couple of spring summer courses would affect the calculation either. I’m interested to know whether all applicants have had it figured out what the GPA is the schools will have calculated - I’m tempted to let them do the work also and forget about it, but would also like to have a good idea about my chances.
    Thank you! 😊

    • @nxtgenmd
      @nxtgenmd  5 лет назад

      Hi Margaret :) great question! I can definitely do a video on GPA calculation as well as GPA in general, but this probably won’t be out for a few weeks (with school, my upload frequency isn’t as high as would be ideal 😅)
      In the mean time, I can offer some guidance: first off, all of the schools calculate the GPA differently. A lot of schools will not consider summer school course at all in terms of GPA - they are almost universally accepted for meeting admissions criteria however. On the other hand, McMaster DOES look at summer school courses to the best of my knowledge. So step 1 is look at how each of the schools do it. I definitely had each of my GPA calculations done in advance. The individual schools did not give me an email or something indicating my GPA.
      Step 2: look up where your particular school falls in terms of the OMSAS GPA table. Ryerson for example is classified as a category 7 school - so an A+ is worth 4.00, A’s are 3.90 etc. Check with you particular school.
      Step 3: if the schools say cGPA and say that all marks are included, then do some simple math with all of the grades. If they say (only regular session grades, then exclude summer school courses). Finally, do the “niche” calculations for schools with different wGPA calcs like Queens and U of T. The GPAs that you calculate may fluctuate pretty significantly in most cases between schools - this is fairly normal. Each school will do their own calculations and OMSAS will also just give you a standard cGPA after everything is done processing.
      Anyways, I hope this helps! Let me know if I missed the mark and theres something else that I can do. Goodluck :)

    • @margaretgrylls8457
      @margaretgrylls8457 5 лет назад +1

      Thanks so much for responding! I understand you must be very busy 😊
      For the cGPA that does include summer courses, would 2017 summer grades be lumped together with the 2016-2017 academic year grades?
      Finally, so sorry to bother you and I’m sure you’ll include it in the video, but how do you calculate overall GPA for a year with courses that are 3.00 and some 6.00 weighted?

    • @nxtgenmd
      @nxtgenmd  5 лет назад

      Its no problem at all :) and when cGPA is indicated, whether or not the summer courses are included in one year or the other will not matter, (since everything is just going to be added together equally and then divided) As long as courses are taken before the grade deadline (check with the specific schools), you’d be good to go. I would imagine though that courses taken in the summer after 3rd year for example, would count as 3rd year courses since 4th year hasn’t started yet. But this is just me speculating unfortunately 😅
      Also, courses that are weighted double (full year / multiple semester courses) are counted as double when compared to single semester courses. However, a grade is not assigned usually until the winter semester. For example. In my last year of undergrad, I worked on a thesis project that lasted from September until the end of April. My A+ in this course counted for 8.0 GPA units instead of 4.0 that are usually awarded with an A+. My transcript showed that I had completed 4 units in the fall semester and 6 in the winter for a total of 10 units or 5 FCEs. All of the schools that I applied to had no problems with this :)

  • @shaniaali1497

    • @nxtgenmd
      @nxtgenmd  4 года назад

      Hey Ben, great question. There is no discrimination in the medical school admission process when it comes to which university you went to for your undergrad. Every program is treated equally according to the OMSAS system when you apply to med school in Ontario :)
      Some schools have more resources available to students that want to pursue medicine, but that’s where the differences end to the best of my knowledge.
      I used to hear the same things back in undergrad - I went to Ryerson and people used to tell me that medical schools wouldn’t like that. But it wasn’t true. Focus on getting great grades and an amazing MCAT score regardless of what school you go to 🤙 best of luck

      @@panizsalehi1968 Hey Paniz :) Lately I've been getting a lot of that same question - I think I'll make a video on it soon. Basically what people are referring to is that GPA points are equivalent regardless of which school you went to for undergrad. In that case, going to a "harder" school might just be unnecessarily making things more difficult for yourself. I don't know if it's entirely fair to single out U of T though - and as an aside, I have more friends that got into medical school from U of T than I do from Ryerson (which is where I went). I'll elaborate more in the future (next week maybe?) - but don't let other people bring you down, especially if you've already accepted an offer. Do you know if Ontario Medical Schools carry any preference for in province applicants in oppose to non-province applicants?

    • @nxtgenmd
      @nxtgenmd  4 года назад

      Hi Suarez. To the best of my knowledge, Ontario schools don’t officially give advantages to applicants who apply from in-province. Western would be one of the exceptions that come to mind though - I’m not too sure about their policies, but SWOMEN applicants are viewed separately I believe. (Check with them directly about this though, their application process has changed in recent years).
      Student selection varies from school to school, but if they don’t specifically mention applicant provincial status on their website, then its most likely not taken into consideration.
