  • You can find all sorts of things down the back of a sofa, but turning up a fox is not all that common!
    After being chased by dogs, this young fox took refuge behind a sofa. Sean was called to the rescue and removed the dusty fox from his hiding place. He was brought back to the centre to put on some weight and recover from his trauma. He stayed with us for a couple of weeks and was, then, released back to the wild!

    That's not a scaredy fox, that's a smart fox! I'd hide behind the sofa too if those dogs were barking at me like that. Bravo for a quick, no fuss rescue.

      @sagerider2 7 лет назад

      I can tell you how. I have a wonky thyroid. I had a terrible time losing weight. Only thing I found was the Paleo diet. Mostly veggies, & 1 sandwich a day, 1 fruit a day. You can eat all the straight meat you want. But sandwiches are usually surrounded by bread. LOL I lost 40 lbs without being hungry. Or exercising, which was difficult because I had been in a car crash.

    I always picture your released foxes going back to their folk and telling their kits or their spouses, or buddies "yeah, humans really aren't that bad. I lived with them for a while" or some such.

    Quite a few people have mistakenly thought they could domesticate a fox, and learnt that whilst they are very cute when young, as soon as the hormones kick in they turn into a home wrecking beast, kinda like teenagers :P wild animals need to be in the wild where they belong :)

    • @SabbyNeko
      @SabbyNeko 9 лет назад +7

      Plenty of foxes have been domesticated...

    • @wildlifeaid
      @wildlifeaid  9 лет назад +38

      That is correct SabbyNeko but its so unfair on them. They are wild animals and belong in the wild. People with "tame" foxes often have problems with them and have to neuter and even cut their claws super short as they never become fully adjusted. Lets keep them in the wild, where they belong :)

    • @SabbyNeko
      @SabbyNeko 9 лет назад +11

      Wildlife Aid
      I always hear this argument, and it's complete nonsense. Foxes can be perfectly happy in captivity, but they need an owner with time, money and proper knowledge of them.
      They are not house cats and aren't for everything. They are a very high maintenance animal for advanced pet owners. The fact the average family can't provide for them doesn't mean we shouldn't domesticate them.
      I'm an animal lover and think we really do need to change the way we treat our environment and protect native species, but how is breeding domestic foxes harming the ones who live in the wild? It's a complete nonsequiter. If anything, foxes becoming more common pets helps people to appreciate and respect them. Why do you think we have animal sanctuaries that double as zoos? It's to educate the public and create an appreciation for the wild.
      Hell, I thought foxes were pests until I started watching videos of people who actually own them, and that made me want to learn about them. I'd say that turned out better then just ignoring them because 'they is animal, belong in wild'

    • @wildlifeaid
      @wildlifeaid  9 лет назад +60

      SabbyNeko We are a wild animal hospital with a strict ethos that wildlife belongs in the wild. There is no reason, other than humans own selfish reasons, to take an animal from the wild and deliberately tame it. If you want a pet, get a rescue dog or cat - there are literally thousands of them sitting in kennels patiently waiting for homes.

    • @madiis18account
      @madiis18account 9 лет назад +6

      Wildlife Aid What say you on F2 or F3 generations of foxes that have never lived wildly and shows characteristics of domestication syndrome? Those foxes wouldn't be able to live on their own, but also aren't recommended as house pets (for licensed owners only). The "keep them wild where they belong" argument is a bit silly though, wolves were wild and we made dogs out of them, domesticating foxes won't cause wild foxes to cease to exist, just as domesticating wolves didn't cause wolves to stop existing, or domesticating wild cats didn't stop them from existing.

    Our fox was wild born but extremely tame. My father used to feed her mother and our tame fox was the curious cub that was fascinated by us. When her mother died, she became the alpha (she had a totally wild sister) and decided that she wanted us as part of her family. She'd come in the house to feed, go for walks with my father, even jump up on him and be affectionate. She'd regard anybody she'd seen entering or leaving our house, or talking to my father as "safe" and greet them with the fox friendship ritual (yawning and looking away which is supposed to be reciprocated). She was always checking out what we were doing in the garden. She just loved being around and interacting with us. But she was still a wild fox at heart and would spend all night on the front lawn guarding her "family's" territory, patrolling and doing whatever it is wild foxes do at night. She would sleep in her den on the railway embankment behind the back garden fence. We treated her like a family dog and she treated us like honorary foxes.
    She disappeared for 2 weeks one summer and we were worried. Then one day she appeared in the back garden with 5 fox cubs, left them with us to look after and went next door to have a sleep in their back garden. One of the cubs had been bitten by a cat, the wound had become infected and she left him with us. A neighbour took the cub to the vet but its bladder had been punctured, hence the infection and it was euthanised.
    She died just over a month later, in 1998, after treading on the 720 Volt third rail on the railway embankment behind our house. She crawled into the back garden, still smoking, and died. We continued putting out food for her wild juvenile cubs until they stopped coming round and returned to the wild.

    I really do truly feel bad for foxes more than any other species of wildlife because I do know what a hard horrible life they lead full of diseases and starvation so when I heard that this guy was going to go to the vet and be held for a couple of weeks I was really really excited for him but then also knew that he had to eventually get back and that made me sad I understand we can keep all Wildlife but it's definitely needed that we always try to give them a leg up because the wild is not like what it used to be full of food and water and the environment that they need unfortunately because of loss of habitat and Etc

    Back in the 1990's we had a wild Alpha Vixen decide that she wanted to be a semi-pet, due to her infatuation with my late father. She'd jump up on him, go for walks and just be like any other dog except she lived wild and did Fox things during the night such as sitting on the front lawn keeping a picket over her territory, burying food in neighbour's gardens, etc.
    Her den was the other side of the hedge at the bottom of the garden on a railway embankment, so she lived 30 feet from the house.
    Her mother was fed by my father and she'd been the inquisitive brave cub fascinated by humans, so when her mother died she took over and decided that having humans as family was a good idea.
    She wasn't allowed in the house without being invited so she'd stand with 3 paws inside the house and 1 outside waiting for the OK usually because her food was being prepared.
    Then she disappeared for two weeks the turned up with 6 cubs in tow. She dumped the cubs on us and took a nap in a neighbour's back garden. Apparently all family members are supposed to help look after the Alpha Vixen's cubs, so as her family we were expected to cub sit. Fox cubs, like puppies, chew, sniff, pee and investigate everything so it was a constant challenge to keep them out of the house. However a piece of rag pulled on a string proved irresistible to them and kept them amused. In the evening she came back, rounded them up and led them all away. She left one with us that was sick and it turned out that it had been bitten by a Cat, the wound had become horribly infected and the vet put it to sleep.
    Three weeks later she died after treading on the electric 3rd rail on the railway line behind out house. We provided food for the juvenile cubs until they left to fend for themselves.

    • @ruthd7274

      +Simone Miller In much of Britain, in fact. I live in London and can see one almost every day, if I'm out at dusk or 3 o'clock in the morning! Just to clarify, before someone makes something of my glib statement - I am very seldom out at 3 A.M, but am often woken at that time by 'barking' and bickering cubs.

    • @wildlifeaid

      +PointyCheese Gaming It is not something we agree with. Foxes are easily stressed in captivity, and many injure themselves trying to escape, or have to have their claws and teeth cut down to prevent injury to the owner. We would much rather recommend a rescue dog instead.

    How do you decide when to intervene with medical attention or feeding? I have many times seen you guys capture wild animals and then keep them for a few weeks to give them food or medical treatment, even when the problem was nothing to do with humans but presumably just natural. Do you ever debate what is too much intervention? Or do you feel like the animals have such a struggle to live around humans they need all the help they can get? I was always taught that populations have to control themselves somehow to avoid growing too large for the territory and eating themselves into starvation, and that we usually just mess the balance if we get involved, unless a population is threatened or endangered. But you guys seem to have a different approach.

    How come that... thing you use to trap and pick him up around his neck doesn't hurt him?

    • @wildlifeaid
      @wildlifeaid  9 лет назад +5

      It's a very soft piece of flexible wire covered in soft rubber, I only use the bare minimum of force to restrain an animal and ensure the animal is held for the bare minimum amount of time. The animals welfare is always our primary concern :)

      I assume the foxes anatomy is also very different somehow to make this even possible? Like, I don't think it would matter what type of wire you used if you tried to pick up a human that way. :P

      @wildlifeaid  9 лет назад +1

      Don Sanchez
      It's a matter of scale, it would be the equivalent when scaled up, of using a tyre inner tube on a human, and in fact most animals if they have to, move their young around by the neck, it has a calming effect on them, we also do it as quickly as possible with the bare minimum of force to stop them slipping out of the noose, if there was the remotest possibility of injuring an animal doing it this way, then I wouldn't do it, tbh the easiest way would be to stick my hand in and let him bite on it and lift him out, but I only have 8 fingers and 2 thumbs, and I'm quite attached to them lol

      Hi Cathleen, the grasper doesn't cause the fox any harm as it is fastened as loosely as possible. The way the fox was handled, (with the hand on its scruff) is the way the parents would carry them as youngsters causing no harm and enabling Sean to avoid being bitten

      Quit being dumb and oversensitive, Cathleen. This is a _wild animal,_ not a puppy. If anything they went very easy on him.

    Efficient rescue, wow that was quick!
    For anyone thinking you can domesticate a fox, know this...
    1. They scent mark the house. Everywhere. About 100 times more stinky than cat pee. No, this cannot be changed. They may poop in litter box, but they will scent mark.
    2. They hear noises VERY LOUDLY. You can say goodbye to your boombox or any loud music in the house. They will also be terrified of garbage trucks, cars, dishwasher, trash compactor, hair dryer... you get it. Imagine household sounds. Now magnify x 1000. That's the decibel level they are hearing. Ears are tuned in to hear a mouse a block away. Yours are not.
    3. They will eat any other small pets - birds, budgies, chickens, baby cats, maybe puppies too. These are predators. If they get out and eat your neighbors pet snake or pet guinea pig or rabbit, guess who gets sued?
    4. Destructive. OMG! You think a puppy is bad. An adult fox is 100 times worse. Never gets better.
    5. Attention. They need attention and playtime 7 hrs a day. Exhausting. Either play or your home is destroyed.
    6. Roaming. When hormones kick in, they will roam. Its stronger than them.
    7. Walking on a leash - No. Cannot be done. They will be terrified of street scene. There is no trust in you like a dog and they are hearing sounds 1000 times louder. You would be too. So much for your pet fox. It is not a dog.
    And there is more... Don't even think about it. You get no fun out of it, only work, work, and more clean up work. Poop and pee everywhere. House shredded.
    Best way to keep a fox, is make your garden a safe haven for a wild fox and give them some food if and only if, you can safely have them around. Do not imprison a wild fox - ever! You have freedom. So does the fox.

    At 1:46 the dogs are wagging in unison! I much prefer Simon's calm, collected, deliberate style. It's much less stressful for the animal. There's a lot of very fast movements here which are unnecessary given the setting, lots of loud talking to other people during the capture, etc. I don't mean to criticize because obviously this man is wonderful for helping animals, but I think you should teach your volunteers "The Simon Method" lol.
