He's actually really good. His pronunciation is nearly spot-on! And I am French. Also, he's charming and hilarious!! I loved "pouf, 5" haha, trop drôle!
HUGH LAURIE IS ONE OF THE BEST ACTORS -- HE SAT IN HIS SMALL BATHROOM FOR THE ACOUSTIC AND FIXED UP AN AUDIO-CASSETTE WHICH HE SENT TO HOLLYWOOD !! GREAT GUY, GREAT ACTOR... GREAT LOOKS, PERFECT FOR THE ROLE
Actually his French is not so bad...it is even good. Very few mistakes (to be exact only one) but perfectly understable and diversified vocabulary. Good job Dr House.
I found this clip recently, and I've come back a few times already, I just absolutely love it, can't stop watching it over and over again😃 I love how good Hugh Laurie is at foreign languages; just 1 of his many qualities! 🥰 (and of course this is also extremely funny!)
I don't know if you guys realise how hard is it for someone who has english as a mother language to pronounce the ''r'' in french but damn Hugh Laurie does it ! Man he is good !
I'm not French-speaking and from the animated mannerism of Laurie and annoyed mannerism of the lady beside him, I thought at first that Laurie was speaking gibberish. When I read from the other comments that he's actually spot-on with the French, I was amazed at how brilliant this sketch has played on Laurie's fame for accents and nationality. Brilliant!
From British person to great actor to great actor that speaks French... he's sure moved up in the world ^.^ (yes I realize he was already popular whilst British; I've seen every episode of Black Adder and A Bit of Fry and Laurie
This is what happens when two trained experience performers that understand and know every trick of the trade in comedy come together, when someone says "let's put james franco and anne hathaway to host the oscars" you say fucking no.
Excellent ! He's so crazy ! I dream that one day i'll speak english like he's speaking french ! La france vous adore Mr Laurie ! France love you Mr Laurie !
Both performers are at the very best of their game. The handful of "voters" who claim to dislike this clip must be so very sad and pathetic. They most probably "dislike" everything that is ever put before them as an attempt to entertain them. Some people are just angry to be alive, I suppose. Hopefully their suffering will be brief, so the rest of humanity can go on with a little less of whatever it was these chronic malcontents insist they have contributed to society. Hugh Laurie RULES!
lol, his accent is quite good, he's actually good on difficult sounds for english guys, like "in", "an/en", "r" and so on. But on rythming, he speaks french with, like, a german accent ! :)
Oooohhhh, two of the best, talented and beautiful actors together! Is it even possible?! Nice accent there mr. Laurie, even if I'm certainly not an expert on the French language... so, he can speak at least THREE quite different accents fluently?
Good to speak many languages. I am a Viet Nam born Chinese, grew up in France, Hong Kong, Japan and now Thailand since three years. I speak Vietnamese, Cantonese, Hakka, Mandarin, French, English, Japanese, Lao and Thai. More to come, I like to learn new languages. But still when I see a native English speaker I have a good attitude toward him/her because you know native English speakers usually don't bother to learn another language.
@phiil0u Actually it does make sence. Helen says that out of hundreds of performances they went down to the best 5 of them. So Hugh was refering to the 5 performances that came first.
I understand what you mean. French and German are both difficult languages (I learn German at school too). And it's also true that English is easier to learn for foreigners, thanks to all the american and english movies, tv shows, etc... Beside English is obligatory at school, unlike french, german or spanish.
@magguylicious We're practically the same people, maybe that has something to do with it. The Angles and the Saxons were both tribes that moved to Eastern and Southern England from what is now Northern Germany.
@thebeastisback2007 That's not a crazy theory, indeed. Because of the "n" the pronunciation of "cinq" actually differs depending on the region (chiefly Northern vs. Southern France).
the english are so cool and elegant. quel sens de l'humour !!! Helen Miren speach and understand french very well. I know that hugh grant, alan rickman, emma thompson speach french too, but i didnt know for hugh laurie.
@TheYoshiToshi Wow, thank you SO MUCH for pointing out why it's funny. I'm sure we were all staring blankly at the screen at that point until you explained it for us all.
He speaks very good french (learnt by heart to show off ? :D) at the begining ^^
OMG, that was so good! And it is funny because when he speaks french, he has a german accent, it's strange xD Mon rêve est devenu réalité *-*, merci Hugh!
@NassooProduction oh, of course it depends of the place, a german dont have much dificulty to learn his language for example, im just talking generally and the intellectual of the person counts of course
it is weird, but in my country,Bulgaria,we use the french word 'merci' when we want to thanks about something to someone.ofcourse,we had bulgarian word for this, but 'meci is more usefull in every day's convercations.
Except that he was correcting another youtube comment that was in French. In first it was written "Notre langue est pas", but swisswaycc corrected by telling him that in french the negation is with the n' and it gives "n'est".
For the record, the most visited city in Europe is London and Paris is second (see the Visa/Forbes survey). But France is by far the most visited country in the world with 83 millions visitors in 2012 (United Nations World Tourism Organization), 16 million more visitors than the United States which is in second place. In terms of received foreign direct investment (FDI in $), France went from 4th in 2007 to 2nd in 2010 (twice less than the USA with one fifth of it's population).
nice try & well done ! Hugh speaks french better than french's actors could speak english ! respect for that. nice accent, it's a pleasure to listen to him. moi je n'écris pas aussi bien en anglais que je parle français... ;)
He's actually really good. His pronunciation is nearly spot-on!
And I am French. Also, he's charming and hilarious!!
I loved "pouf, 5" haha, trop drôle!
Loving the look on Ben Kingsley's face, and how Helen Mirren trolls Laurie with "winnowing" immediately afterwards.
You gotta love Hugh Laurie. That man is a comic genius.
Fr
It's so funny how Laurie stays in character as House.

coeur de rafale 'calm down' ???!!!! I love Hugh Laurie... HE IS A REAL ACTOR/ COMEDIAN !!!
On croirait un vrai Français.
Actually his French is not so bad...it is even good. Very few mistakes (to be exact only one) but perfectly understable and diversified vocabulary. Good job Dr House.
Bravo !

Pourquoi pas?
Hon hon hon
et puis c'est quoi le probleme??

I found this clip recently, and I've come back a few times already, I just absolutely love it, can't stop watching it over and over again😃 I love how good Hugh Laurie is at foreign languages; just 1 of his many qualities! 🥰 (and of course this is also extremely funny!)
LOVE this! Especially the "properly!" and "Yes, dear" at the end, they both sound so perfectly English
I don't know if you guys realise how hard is it for someone who has english as a mother language to pronounce the ''r'' in french but damn Hugh Laurie does it ! Man he is good !

I love the look on Helen Mirren's face when she gives him the difficult word. She is a legend as well.
Hugh should play in french movie. He could be good enough!
"à la tâche presque impossible" this is too cute when he said that^^
From British person to great actor to great actor that speaks French... he's sure moved up in the world ^.^ (yes I realize he was already popular whilst British; I've seen every episode of Black Adder and A Bit of Fry and Laurie
Hugh Laurie - the best thing to come from Britain and like a true Brit, completely modest about his brilliance!
simply brilliant!
I'm American and love France, French, and French people. I even took a few French classes in high school and college. J'adore Français!
So great to read, I hope it is still the case 10 years later !
This is what happens when two trained experience performers that understand and know every trick of the trade in comedy come together, when someone says "let's put james franco and anne hathaway to host the oscars" you say fucking no.
Ah Hugh Laurie... from an era when actors were actually skilled and respectable. Love the guy.
Hugh Laurie is Amazing !!!! I love Him!!!

I LOVE HUGH LAURIE !!!!!!!!!! I DONT CARE IF HE SPEAKS FRENCH OR NOT !!!! HE IS ONE OF THE GREATEST COMEDIAN BESIDES BEING A WONDERFUL MUSICIAN !!!!
The granny is so rude...since when speaking French means not speaking properly!!!
When she said about speak properly she meant speak English duh
Granny? You meant The Queen?
I respect native English speakers who make the effort to learn another language. Thumb up!
His accent is very good especially the tonic accent which is always on the last syllabe of a group of words in French.
Oooohhhh, two of the best, talented and beautiful actors together! Is it even possible?! Nice accent there mr. Laurie, even if I'm certainly not an expert on the French language... so, he can speak at least THREE quite different accents fluently?

I remember this... sooo funny.. love Hugh Laurie and Helen Mirren.
@phiil0u Actually it does make sence. Helen says that out of hundreds of performances they went down to the best 5 of them. So Hugh was refering to the 5 performances that came first.
@zemersEU Actualy pixels are same regardless of compression. Compression doesn't eats out pixels, it affects collor informations :)

Excellent Hugh =)

Wow, thank you SO MUCH for pointing out why it's funny. I'm sure we were all staring blankly at the screen at that point until you explained it for us all.
0:48 I swear that is the actor that played Gandhi in the movie Gandhi!
Oh I love those two! Hilarious!
My goodness, his accent is AMAZING ^.^
I am french canadian and his french is actually pretty good! I understood everything :)
it's taken from an old sketch from A Bit of Fry and Laurie.
I think it's 'winnowing'. It fits in this context.
Hugh Laurie is someone who understands humor
He speaks very good french (learnt by heart to show off ? :D) at the begining ^^
@mcgp9004
He's really good !
OMG, that was so good! And it is funny because when he speaks french, he has a german accent, it's strange xD
Mon rêve est devenu réalité *-*, merci Hugh!

J'adore la traduction! Si seulement on pouvait faire pareil en anglais "pouf thanks".
excellent! Il parle très bien français.
Except that he was correcting another youtube comment that was in French. In first it was written "Notre langue est pas", but swisswaycc corrected by telling him that in french the negation is with the n' and it gives "n'est".
when im bored i always watch this lol
hugh laurie is beautiful!~
Really great job!
I love how at the end Helen Mirren is trying not to laugh.

My God the man's list of talents is endless
Actually, it just has been parodied in house S08E13, just brilliant and awesome that they have thought of that! ^^
@V0r4xiz He knows English, Spanish and French fluently. Not to mention a stunning American accent.
@Alacanzaa aaah, ok. thanks a lot
Wow, his french is soooo good !
I love this!
I can listen to different english dialect that sound pretty aggressive to me, but that doesn't mean the language itself is agressive.
He is always funny and handsome :)
nice try & well done ! Hugh speaks french better than french's actors could speak english ! respect for that. nice accent, it's a pleasure to listen to him. moi je n'écris pas aussi bien en anglais que je parle français... ;)
That's true pretty much everywhere in the world. Italy, Japan, China...
On the plus side, most women in the world like the sound of French.
@Salioune47 Ouais j'ai fini par comprendre, merci ;)
That was the point of what I was saying to Martin St. Hill.
Love the accent
He is magical!
@leothedrawer3 polish, hungarian, and latin too, yeah.
