They could have modernized those 4 times over in the last 60 years and they would be no better off. That open contact relay stuff can last a really long time, instead of a computer with the correct software version to scan and bi-directionally control stuff all you need is your eyes and a rolled up newspaper.

Wow, those are absolutely perfect. Nothing beats a well running DC gen-set lift, even getting rare in the states now they used to be everywhere.

In America most old lifts are DC. DC lifts always have a smooth and quick ride if cared well and last a long time! I hope this lift does not get modded!

DC lifts don't last as long as AC. Too many moving parts. And a lack of spare parts

Why use a DC motor on it

Cause days before VFD this was the only way to have a perfect smooth leveling.

Before VVVF drives AC would only be capable of 2 (or if you're lucky, 3) speeds, which would cause quite the huge jerk on slowdown. That's already bad enough in a 1 m/s lift, but imagine going from 2.5 m/s to 0.3 m/s in just a few hundred milliseconds! DC motors can control speed much more finely, so that's what they used for high speeds.
