    Cankerbloom's name does make sense though. A canker is a slowly growing area of dead tissue on plants, this one happens to bloom. It's like a beautiful phyrexian flower. And since cankers can be caused by pathogenic fungi it all comes together in a weird amalgamation of lifeforms that is typical for the glory of Phyrexia

    I'm surprised there wasn't mention of Mercurial Spelldancer. IMO that card is a great fit in most midrange blue decks. It's really easy to put counters on it and once you do you can double up on a big draw spell, removal spell, or tutor which seems really good. I don't think we've seen something that can repeatedly double up spells this easily before. I think it's worth checking out.

    Ovika isn't stopped by effects that limit card draws, like Eidolon of Rhetoric or Notion Thief. Locust God requires you to draw before you make a token. Minor Misstep can also hit free spells, unlike Mental Misstep. Tyvar makes me want to look at Sultai Sidisi again.

  • @mightyone3737
    @mightyone3737 Год назад

    Not having Protection matters a ton for Auras, Hexproof doesn't make existing ones fall off. It's not a huge ability, but I mean if you want Mom in the Command Zone (and don't want to run Orim, Samite Healer), then Skrelv can do it's thing for you. I feel like this is definitely not a cEDH thing, but it's neat in Casual to get swamped by everyone because your Commander gives poison counters and is a bad mother.
    Cankers are also an issue on trees, many Malus and Prunis trees that make edible fruits can get canker issues, and spray is used to control. There is also rust that afflicts Malus family trees, as well as Thujas. The more you know!

  • @ThaddeusMike
    @ThaddeusMike Год назад

    Great work as always. I do think you were fair on the individual cards but undersold the set as a whole. There are several cards that are good in their own niches, which is healthy for the format. Soulless jailer is going to be a solid piece in a lot of stax decks; the fact that it's a creature makes tutoring it out much easier for decks in green and it is absolutely perfect for Jetmir. I could be wrong but I think Skrelv is good for Sisay. There's not a lot for generic four and five color goodstuff piles, but there are definitely solid pieces that push some second and third tier decks a bit closer to the best decks.

    4:00 I think Skrelv is going to be a Winnota staple; it protects Winota until the moment it triggers her ability. I think it being non-human is the dealbreaker that puts it above mother of runes

    • @thedoctor1471
      @thedoctor1471 Год назад

      Naaah. Skrelv only protects winota if it's untapped, so you don't attack with her. Mother of runes is a good card because either it's played early and can protect winota when it comes, or it's put into play for free with indestructible then can protect winota.
      Skrelv ... well if it comes before winota it doesn't trigger it and if winota is in play you wanna attack with it but then you don't protect anything.

    4:10
    canker (n.)
    late Old English cancer "spreading ulcer, cancerous tumor," from Latin cancer "malignant tumor," literally "crab" (see cancer, which is its doublet). The form was influenced in Middle English by Old North French cancre "canker, sore, abscess" (Old French chancre, Modern French chancre).
    The word was the common one for "cancer" until c. 1700, but since the reintroduction of cancer in a more scientific sense it has tended to be restricted to gangrenous sores of the mouth. Also used since 15c. of caterpillars and insect larvae that eat plant buds and leaves. As a verb, "to corrode, corrupt," from late 14c. Related: Cankered; cankerous.

    Love you all very much. That said; this thing about minor misstep..
    Tyler said “ask yourself each time you play mental m if you had to pay one mana for this would you want to do it”.. that sorta is a good point. But I think it’s hinting at something different from what it might seem.
    I used to think mental misstep was not a good card and should not be played when I saw how people used it. And I actually think it’s not a good card the way people use it. If the card said “discard this and lose two life the first time any player tries to play any card w mana cost one then that card is countered” then that card would be dog shit.
    And that’s roughly how it is played fairly often.
    I think the much better way to play and think of mental misstep is to play it mostly as a way to protect your own wins accept in emergency. Maybe the fact that you can’t just tap out and waste minor misstep on a sol ring will make it a better piece for some players at first?
    So the thing about it is it counters virtually every damn piece of interaction in the format. That’s very good and in a lot of decks I think it’s gonna be better than spellsnare.
    I like spellsnare a lot and play the shit out of it but it’s coming out in some of my lists for minor misstep.. Malcolm Tana for instance, I want another counter for your counters and to tell yours lightning bolts and swords to kick rocks when aimed at my poor defenseless little pirate bro.
    I run misdirection in that deck over force of negation and I know that’s a hot take but I feel the same way about minor m vs spellsnare. In decks that are trying to control the game more prob snare is > minor m. But I think MinM might be better in decks like turbo nause/Malcolm Tana.
    I feel fairly confident but I guess time will tell.. probably.
    Namaste homies 🖖

    as a locust god EDH player, I will point out that the locust god is a 1-card combo in the command zone, where as Ovika is not. With the locust god out, you cast Sage of the falls and you draw and discard your whole deck and with an Eldrazi titan in the library, you do this infinitely, creating infinite locusts with haste that then kill everyone.

    Myr Convert might also see play in Winota. Mercurial Spelldancer could see play in Tymna decks with blue. Some red decks may want to test Vindictive Flamestoker.

    I don't play cedh but I play very low cmc decks tyvar looks like such a fun card, love the design, its a thousand year elixir, with a small reanimation target. pure value. going straight into my garth one eye deck just for the possibility of reanimating my bloom tender, mom, humble defector, or fauna shaman. it looks super fun! also i am always looking for more graveyard hate, and soulless jailer looks great.

    you can be mana nuetral with ovika sceptre and still make infinite hasty goblins to win. i think that may be a unique feature. talrand before could make drakes but they weren't hasty. locust god requires net positive mana and both colors. FWIW

    • @Dracomandriuthus
      @Dracomandriuthus Год назад

      You kinda need to go mana positive to be able to cast your dumb 7 mana commander. It's why I think she's not really viable.

      @@Dracomandriuthus mana positive with your rocks and other things you are untapping with the sceptre, there are many ways to get your commander out fast and still not be mana positive with isorev or only have 1 color of mana from your rocks.

    For anyone else's information, Haywire Mite removes any The One Rings that you might run into.
    This has been a PSA from a very battered and bruised Gruul cEDH player, best of luck to you all 😂
    Also, hard agree with Tyler on the exclamation points. That said, dogs needed SERIOUS support, and all hounds probably should've just been dogs to begin with...

    I think in a Copy Scepter deck the new instant "Prologue to Phyresis" is sick. Worst cast it's an over cost loot. Best case it imprint's on the 2nd Scepter and wins the game.

    When I first looked at tyvar from a 7-8 level mindset, I’m like “this is lame” but y’all’s 9-10 mindset really got me thinkin that he may be worth it 😬 he’s not flashy like the bigger walkers of the set, but he’s just good value 🤷‍♀️

    for the unctus thing, you cant play lightning greaves bc the creature couldn't target itself.

    i think what they're missing on ovika is the fact that with a phyrexian altar all your spells are free. this isn't a locust god, as it doesn't draw, rather it makes mana
