  • I present to you all the things we got up to on Day 2 and 3 of Revzilla's Get On! ADV Fest 2021. We maybe have gotten in way over my head on a beautiful off-road ride through the Black Hills of South Dakota after a very busy day taking the ADV Woman course. I was a bit more whooped than I thought.

I bought an ADV bike last year but had no intention of really taking it off road.
I just completed 2 days in South Carolina taking a 1 day on road and a 1 day off road class from BMW. I am so glad I did. I gained so much confidence and skill. I took their bike (why risk damaging mine? Lol) places I never would have expected I'd be able to and with a confidence to do so that surprised me.
I completely agree with you when you recommend taking a class. I'm glad I did.

I highly highly recommend Bret Tkacs classes! Bret and Paul are fantastic and teach each year in Oregon and on Washington as well as provide a tour with training on the first parts (or all) of the WABDR and across the globe. Just took his training in July and cannot say enough good things about it.

I took a Shane Watt's two day Dirt Bike School. It was two days of boot camp. I was somewhat afraid of my bike going in but after that class I gained so much confidence. I really learned a lot. I would take another class in a heart beat if I had the time and funds. I want to start focusing more on the ADV part of riding though as I am not a competitor. I can use a lot of skills from Shane's class on riding in general but being able to do some stuff on a bigger bike would be awesome.

Great video! I got into ADV riding this year after many years of road touring. I started working out including core strength training (I’m older) and it really paid off. I took a course with the Pine Barrens Motorcycle School in New Jersey and it was a great experience. Just returned from Wyoming and Montana and enjoyed seeing some familiar sites in your video. Keep up the good work!

So much fun to re-live ADVFest!!! I love getting time with you!
I'm passionate about training. My first class was Dirt Bike Safety Training in Washington. It was life changing. In a few short hours I learned a ton. But riding has been a challenge, so I've taken their beginner class a few times, worked with Ramey Stroud, did a PSSOR class, and attended the ADV Woman Rally with Pat Jacques! This inspired me to intern with Pat and now I teach beginners; we know I don't have advanced skills, but I love helping newer riders master anxiety or fear related to riding. It blends my day job (mental health counselor) and my passion for riding perfectly! I'm so glad you got to train with Pat. She has infused my life with joy!

I was just thinking gah how do I get more riding time with Kris XD
Can speak from experience you are a wonderful teacher and I particularly appreciated your gentler approach to communicating critique.
Not gonna lie after I got halfway through the day and was already crazy tired, it was hard not to tear up while Pat was giving me the speech about dabbing XD She was not being mean, but since I was already fatigued... well I get emotional when I'm fatigued lol and my normal resistance to feedback, translates to feeling attacked. lol completely irrational.

To your closing Q. Nope and I need some tuition but haven't found much on offer where I am in Dallas TX. Got me a H-D Pan America a few months back. It's an amazing bike especially on the asphalt but I don't want its capabilities to be limited by my off-road inexperience., so... I may have to travel further afield to find the help I need.
I've been watching your channel for some time now and I'm always impressed with how you have grown and the channel has matured. Keep the good work up, you are an inspiration to anyone trying to take their first step towards Adv travel, both on and off-road. Thank you.

hey amanda, nice video again. Few years ago I went to the bmw "endurorpark" in germany. It was the first time I could really really feel such an efficient learning curve ! as you said, those people have enough experience, knowledge, black magic, in them to know that you dont put enough weigth here or there or that you are too slow or to aggressive with your levers... I did things I never thought I would do or achieved things I failled at 20 times just because the instructor told me to change this or that. ADV training are really a must, even if you are only planning to stay on tarmac

Really appreciate your comment about "if you are hesitant to pay..." As an old guy, I know I still need some adv training on the Super Tenere. I got rid of a Goldwing because it was too big.. now I'm almost feeling the same of the ST... But, I bought it for its capabilities and know its capabilities are well beyond the abilities of its owner. Would love to know where to find schedules for this type of event...It's either that or admit I've grown too old to be doing this.... and dang it.... I don't feel that old! btw, you are one tough lady to still be doing this type of riding after breaking your wrist a couple years ago..

    • @AstheMagpieFlies

      Thanks Richard!
I was fore sure a skeptic about off-road training, especially the cost, I didn't really know if it would be worth it, or if I would get there and get told things I already knew from doing all the research I do. But after the experience I genuinely believe it's worth the money, and am saving some pennies to maybe go do the Jocelyn Snow course if I can.
I hope you get the opportunity to take a course with your Super Tenere! I feel like you would gain a lot of confidence!

I'm nearly 60 and I have a Kawasaki KLR650 with a tall seat height. When I was young, I passed 6'1" in height but now days I feel like I'm 1'6" tall. I still manage to get on the KLR easy enough though. A good set of 50/50 tyres are on it so the bike gets me there, where ever that turns out to be. Anyhow, my idea of riding is ride for the fun of it, even camping, and take my time and keep an eye out for photo opportunities. I do have an advantage though, when I was a kid I used to ride trail bikes and ag bikes(farm bikes) on my grand parents farm.
I haven't broken my wrist but I did break my arm @ the distal end of my left ulna - the forearm bone at the wrist near the thumb. It healed misaligned so I had to get it rebroken and a plate in my arm to hold it together while it healed.
Dad joke time:- I all ready have a plate so all I need is a knife and a fork and some food and I can have a picnic. Ta da!

No "official" ADV training courses yet but we have Sierra Nevada Adventures here in Sacramento leading occasional classes plus 1, 2 and 3 day group rides limited to 20 riders per, so the size is manageable. SD trails look like a blast. Those white rocks remind me of Beartooth when you get off the pavement.
End Crew...Nope. I've looked into some, never committed. Witnessed a couple events with BMW instructors, that confirmed, some of these guys are blow bags.
I'd really like to ride out to BC and do GrizzBait. You get a bike for the week and there's small warm ups before the days rides. Not cheap, but your riding with the eRag crew and a whole bunch of reprobates😆

Nope, never took a class but would love to do so. Amanda, did this hugely improve your sense of what you can and can not do on your Honda? It just looked miserably heavy when you were picking it up. I've only been out in the sticks with a 250 dual sport and even that got old getting in and out of trouble. Also, how happy were you once you got back to paved roads? Sometimes you have to revel in a nice bit of pavement.

Looks like a wonderful time. It looks like you changed camera mounts. What are you using? On my next trip, I think I'm going to ride with my AT950.

    • @AstheMagpieFlies
      @AstheMagpieFlies  2 года назад +1

Hey J! I talked about the new camera mount at the end of one of the IDBDR videos. I won't be staying with it though, will be going back to my trusty Telesin mount. The camera is just angled down too much, there's no way to mount it upside down, so in order to get a good shot I have to think about angling my head up to get the shot and it's just not something I want to have to think about especially riding offroad when I need to be focused on the road lol

@@AstheMagpieFlies I'll have to go back and watch again. If it's the video I'm thinking of, there was tons of giggling at the end. I have the bikini style one that you used to use. I can't close my visor all the way and it gives me a ridiculous amount of wind noise.

I took the Dirt First training with Jason Sherman on my 790. I learned a lot. Rode off feeling like I have more to learn than I thought I knew at the start of the training. It was definitely a humbling experience.
    Keep on being awesome!

If it's any consolation, I would have dropped my Versys 650 a dozen times on that dirt 'road'. (It's more of trail) Yes, it's a ADV bike, but it's so top heavy it's hard to control at slow speeds.

@@AstheMagpieFlies You're too cute Ms. Amanda. When you buy a pair of pants the tag gives you two measurements. One is the waist size and the other is the measured distance from the crotch seam to the bottom of the pant leg, also known as the inseam. I ask because you handle all the bikes well. Thanks for responding!

    • @AstheMagpieFlies

I know what an inseam is.
      That measurement comes on jeans.
      I haven't worn jeans in three+ years.
I wear hiking pants, they don't come with an inseam measurement.
      Thank you. 👍

Not trying to offend anyone but I have to ask. Do you enjoy dropping your bike? From what I see there are just as many fun roads and things to see that are not in this bad a shape. I am a cruiser guy so I may just not understand. I enjoy the videos but I don't get the draw of this type of thing.

    • @AstheMagpieFlies
      @AstheMagpieFlies  2 года назад +1

lol if you choose to ride off road dropping and picking up bikes is just apart of the game man.
Yes there's lots of cool places to see on slab, but there's also a lot of beautiful scenery to be seen off-road. Rough roads are just part of it.
Did you watch the IDBDR videos? especially that road between Featherville to Yellowpine then Yellowpine to McCall, you just don't get those kinds of experiences when you're on slab and surrounded by people.
