Glad someone finally understands what ADV riding is vs dual sport , my Ktm 790mdoes great on the highway and easy to handle for those off road adventures
I appreciated your take on the Pan Am. I have never done a challenge course but would like to try. I’m right there with…..when I need a larger bike, it’ll be an Africa Twin without question.
If it's two or three years out Critter, and if the PA has proven its reliable, take a ride before you buy. The Pan America is something else... The comfort and road ability are far beyond an AT, and I would bet a weeks pay that anything you could do on an AT offroad, you could do on a PA.
Glad you had a chance to ride that bike. Finger on the pulse and nailed the true spirit of what ADV is, I so agree with you. Gary looked so comfortable on that bike, like it was made for him. Not easy to take an unfamiliar bike and do slow speed maneuvers and then to do them on the grass. Kudos, hope you had fun! I have not done a challenge course but would love to.
LOVE the laughs when you took off on the highway....it is FUN! The other wonderful thing is that you get enthusiasm from both ADV riders and Harley dudes & dudettes...people are curious.
I rode this bike two weeks when they came to Vermont. (Same folks at your event) Instead of the challenge course we had a nice offroad section through a cornfield and some woods. It rained for several days before they arrived leaving it nice and slippery. I was incredibly impressed with the bike despite the demo bike having worn knobs. On the highway it feels like a sport bike at 100mph. The only reason I would not consider one is that it's a brand new bike with an insane level of technology. I am concerned about long term reliability.
Hi Amanda I am a Honda guy also I just love how well they handle and there dead pan reliability. I am waiting for a CRF300L to arrive at the local Honda shop. My NC700X is just to heavy for me to pick up at 70 years of age with bad knees and back. My 700 weighs 470 lb wet and how people pick up these huge ADV bikes is beyond me. I suppose a lot of it is that they don't travel alone like I do so they have help picking them up repeatedly.
I just started getting into long distance riding, and the more I do longer and longer rides, the more I'm starting to realize how important comfort is. I definitely feel you about the vibrations at higher speeds, my CB300R starts to really get vibrate-y around 70 mph and it would be so fatiguing to ride at that speed for long. I've found the sweet spot is right between 55 - 65 mph, and I'm loving every mile I put down! I have to say, your videos helped put me over the fence to get over my fears and start really adventuring, so far my rides have only been (round trip) between 80 - 280 miles, but each time I go just a little farther than before... and thus, my need for comfort increases! So I keep adding more mods - seat cushion, windscreen, taller phone mount, tank bags with water bladders and all that - so who knows how far I'll get before I feel the need to upgrade! Maybe it would be this bike? Or it might be the Versys which I hear is SUPER comfy to ride, but that Africa Twin looks like it would be incredible too.
Such a great video!! I enjoy challenge courses because they show me what I need to work on; I was super impressed with the coaching by the food at the BMW Performance Center Challenge Course at ADV Fest.... It was one of the first times I really understood where to look in a comes course, and that I really haven't been looking as far as I needed to! I need a spare weekend to set up a course in tbe yard to practice!
I’ve owned one for about 3 months. The engine is awesome. Everything else sucks. Most days I stick with my 2017 Africa Twin and leave the Pan Am at home.
I’m very happy that you got a chance to ride one. I absolutely love mine and feel that it will be a great tourer. Then, I have the option to jump off-road when I want. Don’t know if you got a chance to try sport mode. It’s just silly fast. Nice job on the weld.
So glad you enjoyed the experience. And I completely understand the thoughts about purchasing. That’s how I feel about lighter bikes. I enjoy the weight of mine when on the road. Harley has a habit of setting the clutch away from the grip. I’ve had to change out for an adjustable clutch on all of mine. ‘Easy Fix’? Famous last words.🤣 No, have not done a challenge course, but maybe I should. Up my game.
I'm certainly not in the market for anymore motorcycles, but I'd definitely like to ride it. Still won't be low enough for Caitlyn, so we're still leaning towards a bike with a sidecar. Looked like a fun time!
You looked like you loved the experience, but it's great to ride different bikes but by the bikes in the yard you are used to that anyway ? Can you help my wife brought me a guardian bell and she has been told she has to fit it is that true being from the UK this is new to us many thanks, Steve
Africa Twin is better. It's also had much more dev time, and gens to get it right. 😅 The Pan Am in my opinion still needs a little time to mature -aka it still needs a few more gens to improve-
I'm jealous that you had a chance to ride a pan America. I work at a HD dealer and haven't been able to ride one yet. Almost every one has sold as soon as it's taken off the truck.
Well congrats on your test ride. I test road one. I ride a ultra classic. Going from around 1000 pound bike to a 560 pound bike feels like it's real easy to handle. I really enjoyed the bike. There's lots of Harleys dealership here in the lower 48 and parts of Canada. So service , repairs are a bit easier. The price is right competitive with the other adventure bikes. To think of it BMW has a great adventure bike but I can't even think were the closets BMW dealership is close to me. There was a lot of things I found that it was just right with the Pan America. All things considered. Of course this is just my opinion. Have fun doing what your doing. I enjoy your video's so keep em coming. Billy...
Yes customer support is huge, the closest BMW dealership to me is about 55 miles away where is the closest Harley dealership is about 10 miles away from me, so that definitely would come into my decision making to purchase. However, on a brand-new model I would wait one or two years before purchasing one so they can work the bugs out
very nice opinion review..I didn't even think about riding it at the GL rally because I am not interested in riding anything over 350lbs off road...I will put up with vibes and iron butt to not pick up (or not) 400lbs chunks of Iron
Nice review- I also liked the power at the high RPMs . But felt it did not have the low end torque that the BMW GS has. It’s a great 1st attempt. Definitely geared to shorter riders. With a 35” inseam, I was cramped- even with the seat all the way up. I would need to get a foot peg lowering kit. And handlebar risers. Going to stick with BMW for now
End Crew...yes I have done a couple challenge courses. It's seems they are always done on grass, so complimentary skids or rippin the grass is in order😆 Have you ever considered the Rally Raid kits for your CB500X? It's a costly upgrade, but turns it into a little beast. Combine it with more aggressive tires😙👌 Ive had more fun demoing the 500x than most other bikes, and is up high on the list for owning one. Honda should put that 500 into a more offroad friendly frame. Since everyone is drooling over the T7, a 500 in similar build would definitely sell.
They look interesting, I'm not a fan of it's front on look, but I'd definitely like to try a test ride on one for sure. So glad you got the chance. 👍😄 Though in the end I'd probably still prefer my Africa Twin 😂 (never done a challenge course, but I'm looking at doing an adv riding course sometime soon just for fun)
Yep. Although still not as bad as the Milwaukee Eight. I'm not gonna lie I had some hopes that maybe they would get rid of more of it when trying to market to the adv audience lol They did a little, but not as much as I had hoped they would lol
Nope, all the turn signal controls are on the left. I actually talked about that and decided to take it out because I didn't think anyone would care XD
I loved hearing you laughing. You are really enjoying it. Your next bike? More powerful for sure than the CB500x. Glad this makes you laugh. By the way thanks to you and a few others, I am also doing the thing now. Been on the road full time since June 2021 with a 2021 VStrom 650. I was thinking of the Pan America but I did not want to spend the 20k to buy this thing.
Did you get much footage of your brother riding the Pan America on and off road? As a 650 V-Strom rider it would be interesting to hear his thought on the Pan America. He doesn't have his own channel like Chris. So would you be able to put together a video of his impressions of the Pan America. Filler about his impression of the rally could be added. I suspect that you have enough extra video footage and still shots. A phone call could work for interview like audio.
Eric. If you're so interested in my brothers perspective go bother my brother about it. Dm him on Instagram he's @the_digital_nothing . I don't have enough footage to make a whole other video just from my brother's perspective.
@@AstheMagpieFlies Thanks. It was just a suggestion. In all honesty the Pan American or any other 1000cc plus ADV is not on my short list of possible future bikes for the same reason you listed and cost. So I don't plan on contacting him. But thank you for the information. Honestly the main part of wanting to see that was to see and hear the interaction between you and your brother as you talk about the motorcycle and rally. In some ways the two of you seem so different. In other ways it is very clear that you are family. Kind of related, I very much enjoy your interview with your grandmother.
the bike for me looks cool as shit... and i hate harley's.. wish it didn't cost as much as a dam 1250gs i would rather just get that, a superior bike.. . and where the hell is the quickshifter for that price... also the top box bracket can only carry like 5 lbs... pretty pathetic

A great review but what a ridiculous concept. It’s a posers road bike not a serious dual sport. Your summing up was spot on. Keep the 500X. I’ve just swapped an ST1300 for a CB500X to get rid of the weight and the power that make it impossible to use anything but well surfaced roads.
@@AstheMagpieFlies Yep. Over all I thought it was vibby too. I'm not a pro reviewer but I didn't "love" it when I rode it a couple of time at IMS. IMHO It has a bunch of great stuff on it, but all in all it didn't seem great 🤷♂️
Love my V-Rod, best bike I've ever had. it actually saved my life due to its very strong and rigid frame. but Harley is losing its base, old men are dying and the young kids have no interest in cruisers. Harley will go broke in about 5 years, they just cant seem to make a bike the kids are interested in....shame.
their new sportster is the right direction. competition to ducati scrambler and indian scout. anything less than 10k new is the right direction to get young people interested. I think the difference is older generations grew up with an old beater dirt bike in the yard and younger ones more often didn't have any motorized 2 wheeler
I don't know about that assumption. The younger crowd are loving the new lowrider s bikes. Bagger sales are still good. The performance bagger scene is growing and growing. I know lots of guys making after market parts... that are a way younger than I am.
In my opinion it's a big piece of crap I've had 1 for 7 months so I know it's been in the shop 10 times in 7 months New fuel pump new clutch now it's in the shop with a new starter numerous numerous codes and catastrophic failures
I really do t get how Harley, just completely ignore other brands, that build bikes in this category ,and only compares themselves to a GS. This is barely more off road capable than a vstrom, yes more electronics, but that doesn’t mean anything, Vstom is thousands below this, the super tenere is a shaft drive, like the gs, and every bit as off road capable as the pan America, only difference, the tenere is proven to be bullet proof, only 16,000 new. So…… will the Harley guys still make fun of the adventure riders, you know the ones they call” power rangers” , and say there not real motorcycles? Funny how Harley cries, copycat, when some one else enters their market. Amanda, you didn’t do any of this, just a little sic of the hypocrisy of Harley, entering someone else’s market, which they always cry when someone else does it. Guess I’m venting, this isn’t directed towards you Amanda, just venting.
Interesting video, but I just can't get past the ugly looks of this machine, the designers must have been smoking something strange. It's a disaster in the looks department, I do love Harley but this model no... A suzuki 650 v Strom is much better looking and the famous gs bikes look way better than this. I know it's not all about looks but if I rode this to the local bike meet I would leave my helmet on and hide in the outside shithouse 🤦♂️🤠
