My 2021 HD Pan America Special has been the best bike that I've ever owned. I've been very pleased with its performance and the service that I've received at my local dealership.
Thank you, for being a first adopter. You may be pleased to know that everything you mentioned as an annoyance (or negative) has been corrected on the 2023, with the exception of the stands, which still suck. There is even a deflector now for the radiator so that the fan does not blow hot gas up the rider's left leg any longer ! I agree with your assessment totally (smile factor) on the Pan America. I love my PA Special (2023) and at the time of this writing have 1696 miles on the odometer. I purchased the machine for the power plant, the tech, the sleek durability, and the comfort and handling (ARH, and other). This machine is superb, and as of this writing the PA is still the top sold ADV bike in America. The jiffy stand, and the center stand, don't work quite right because of the ARH (believe it or not). The ARH relaxes so that the stands (both) end up being too long ... you need to lean the bike right to put the jiffy stand down, and you need to be very strong to rock the bike back on the center stand. I am confident the York people will get this worked out soon. But, again, I did not buy the bike for its stands, I bought the bike for the Revolution Max platform, etc, as mentioned above. marcus
A sad day when a lot of harley shops were sold to investment groups and no more local owners. Customer service has gone way down hill, I wanted this bike but my treatment was not good and i stopped by a triumph dealer and what a difference, they acted like the harley dealer when i bought two off my harleys but they lost my third purchase, tiger 1200 for adv now.
Thanks for another great video! My 2022 PA has 16,694 miles with a few issues along the way, VIN Error message displayed on odometer, blank TFT screen twice. Both of these were cleared up with a software update. My fuel pump starting making the same noise as yours at around 11K and was replaced under factory warranty. I trimmed the radiator hose like you did just as a precaution. Like you the bike has never left me stranded. Ive ridden to Great Smoky Mountain National Park, Grand Canyon North and South Rim, and Zion Nat Park. Ive owned a Road King, and Three Street Glides all ridden over 40K and by far the Pan America is my favorite motorcycle. I have a great dealership with two technicians trained for PA maintenance. I want to thank you again for all the effort you put into your videos they are some of the best out there. Looking forward to your opinion of the Lone Rider Foot Pegs!!
Thanks for this insightful video. I purchased a 2023 Pan America about eight months ago and I have about 2k miles on it (I know, only 2k miles, but I have other Harleys to "keep happy"). So far, I have not experienced the issues you have, but I will be on the lookout for them. BTW, I took mine into Harley and they updated the engine software, but I was surprised later to learn they did not update the "infotainment" software, of which there is an update. The update does have some nice features and I was able to download the new version from Harley's website and update the display without difficulty. Thanks again.
Test rode the Pan Am at a motorcycle event…As a former Mx racer I loved how it felt…Never bought one but a year later picked up a 2018 Yamaha Super Tenere with 1200 miles on it and have been loving the ADV ride ever since….👊
Great summary Mike, I have 22 PA and I've only had 2 issues, the Radiator hose (replaced and I added heat shield insulation to it) and the screen went blank only once. I did the software update myself (5 min) and its been working great. I do not ride every day or every weekend but when I do, its usually 1K miles or more from home. I did a ride to Vegas trouble free with tons of smiles ( 3,200 miles ). I will replace this seat, I found it not to be very comfortable and will look for a reach seat to bring me closer to the ground. I'm 5'8'' and can reach the ground no issues but I like to have a little bend on my knees when I'm at full stop. and I can't tell you enough the BIGGEST thing I hate is the Side Stand/Jiffy Stand - Actually a Horrible stand. I also wish Harley Would increase the fonts on the display for the side items. That can be done via software......and I agree, the NAV functionality is really BAD .......Ride safe sir. GOD Bless - see ya on the road....
2022 model. here. Pretty much same, same has you. Esp Bluetooth and pairing aspects.~ to difficult to manage on a daily basis. ~ P.I.T.A Kickstand, Not a fan. I've almost dropped it a couple of times. I'm handicapped and this is SO much easier to ride then my Street Glide Special. I think there are on sale for +/- $17K now. Worth every penny.
2022 Pan America here: 1). Multiple random times bike would just die. Seems to happen mostly when going from high RPMs to quick slowdown/stop. Just dies out. 2). Hard starts when cold weather. Seems to have fixed that issue. 3). Poor Bosch connector terminations.....repaired. 4). ECM had to be replaced. 5). Currently in the shop with a blown head gasket/piston ring. Not properly seated from factory. This is at 5,000 miles. 6). Almost forgot, handle bars were not "square" with the front tire. I made some adjustments when I added bar risers but it's still noticeable for me and drives me nuts. Argued with mechanic numerous times and just dealt with it myself. I have thoroughly enjoyed this bike, and still do, when it's not in the shop. Some fixes they were able to get to in a day but others have taken a week or more. I've stopped trying to keep up with how many times and how long this bike has been in the shop. Everything has been covered, so far, by HD but I only have a little over a year left on my warranty. I've decided that I will pay it off before the warranty runs out and trade it in for a BMW 1250 GSA. I was trying to stay HD but this has been my worst experience ever with a vehicle/bike. They definitely have some issue with their 2021 and 2022 year models. Haven't heard anything about the 2023's yet. One other mention..... My dealership has been pretty good with trying their best to help me, other than the handlebar issue, but a LOT of this falls on HD themselves. Yes, many dealerships/mechanics despise the Pan America and would rather not even fool with them but HD doesn't provide much help to the dealerships either. My mechanics have no idea what done codes mean as there isn't any information on them. I had to find a video from Yeager's Cycles (great channel) to find out what to do and show the mechanic. Crazy. Good luck to you, Sir, as your channel has also been a big help to me! I will stick around until I trade mine in but will miss your detailed videos!
There he is again Mr .Pete. Angeles The man who hates Harleys and the people who ride them as he states over and over on the Harley owners you tube channels. If you hate us so much why are you paying so much attention Pete? Why you take a long pleasant ride on whatever bike you own and calm down . Thank you. Shalom, peace and tranquility to your troubled soul.
Great review. I have the exact same bike and had the same exact problems, to include having to go to another dealer. My engine was replaced at 11k. I am hoping that I can now trust the bike again on a long trip.
Really bad knocking, loss of oil pressure. It didn't have the loose metal grinding sound. I've read something before about the oil pump line coming apart from the pump so no oil gets sent up top. I've only read about it once a few years ago and can't remember the details. It was covered under the original 2 year warrenty (I bought an extra 3 years warrenty when I bought it).
I have the same model, same issues, my bike was one of the first received at Mexico, the local HD dealer give excellent service, many of the issues were solved after last update and replacing battery for antigravity lithium battery, congratulations for the channel and many thanks for the all videos.
I had just as many problems with a new Ducati Multi Strada and you are correct in that a good dealership makes all the difference when something goes wrong...
Dealership treatment goes so far, with bikes or cars. I have a fleet of Kia’s. Well, it seems like I do. Had three for awhile. First one had the motor blow. Kias are known for this, and there are a lot of horror stories out there about how people were treated. Mine, we called the dealer, and they sent a truck to get it. Looked at it for 10 minutes, and handed us the keys to a loaner. Said see you when the motor is replaced. Cost $50. That’s why we went back.
Thanks for sharing! Just picked up a 2022 used with 250 miles new to me. I was waiting for the not first model year. Although i only have about 150 miles on her i love her!
I just got my fuel pump replaced for the same reason. 19,600 miles on my 22 a lot of the same issues except for header tabs and shutting off. Still love the bike. The dealer can make or break the ownership experience on this bike. Love the channel.
2022 with 2000 miles runs great so far. No problems what so ever. The only thing I don't like is the kickstand. If you load it up it drops even lower and you have to really tilt it to the right to get the kick stand down. Which is sketchy AF with all that extra weight on it. Other than that I love it.
Awesome video, Mike! You personally are one of the main reasons why i got a pan america and i friggin love my bike. Im really looking forward to doing my 1k mile maintenance using your tutorial video. Cheers!
I also have a 2021 pan, so far no real issues, I love it, but, I totally agree about the indicators and the kick stand. They are small things but I spend a lot of time when riding in the city checking the indicators haven’t cancelled before the turning and also checking when I’ve cancelled them they’ve actually gone off no feel to the switch.Side stand is like a leap of faith every time you use it, please update that Harley, however the engine, rider experience is a peach!
I had a first batch pan am special. I put 11K on it in a year and a half but it had issues along the way. My bike had starting and running issues. The bike either wouldn't start, or it would run then not start, like when I'd stop for gas. The bike didn't have the ARH but at times it would lower. Sometimes it would raise and other times it wouldn't, staying in the low position. I ride 1000 mile loops regularly and decided that I couldn't have a bike that wasn't reliable. Harley bought it back for a totally acceptable price. The bike was a total hoot to ride, when it ran. My dealership really tried to keep the bike running, I can't complain about them and I still have my 17 Ultra Classic. I'm on a KTM 890 Adventure as an ADV replacement and with almost 11K in 8 months it has been a more reliable bike. Not that it hasn't had an issue or two along the way. My screen went completely blank on a trip but when I stopped for fuel it came back on and hasn't done it again. Luckily, the bike kept running even with the screen blacking out. It hasn't done it since. I miss the extra HP but that is about it.
great review i,ve been holding off buying one till some of the bugs have been worked out, sounds like things are almost there plus i have a dealership i really like
Great video man, thank you so much for sharing your experiences with this bike! I've been looking at them for a year but have a lot of reservations about buying something at this price that's so new.
I have the 2023 RA1250 Special and everything you say is spot on for me the Bluetooth is iffy at best and will not connect to my Cardo system so I go direct to my phone with that. One issue I have had with mine is the little warning light that comes on in the heads up display three trips to the dealership and no resolution just had it in for the 10k service and finally they say they found the problem seems the right hand control module loses communication which also causes an annoying delay on power up of the bike. Seems this is a know problem. I also have had the fuel pump issue as well and have had the bike just shut off while coming to a stop once. With all that though I love the bike and the ride. Thanks for a great video good to hear I’m not the only one with these opinions.
Thank You. I have seen more issues with the tech on new Harley's. Waiting to see the Buell SuperTouring this fall. Hoping the Buell don't have tech besides some electronic shocks. The kids say the Pan Am looks like a catfish. I like the older Harley controls.
Glad to see a new video.. Two Thumbs up! I have a 22 that I bought 6 months ago and put on 9,200 miles. I had the cold start issue which a update fixed.the dealership said the same thing “we don’t just do updates “ WTH! At about 3,500 miles my fuel pump started to fail (screeching pump trying to prime) dealership fixed it during the 5,000 service. Then at about another 3,500 miles the fuel pump is starting to fail!! Now I’m waiting on the crappy dealership to get one coming it’s been a month! Also my front brake rotor is out of displacement by 10 mm .. I’ll be switching dealers as they try to blame me for issues instead of just addressing them! The dealership put on new Dunlop trail max front/rear. I developed a death wobble from 85+. Took it back to the dealership and they said “we couldn’t replicate the issue “ they ask “when you’re at 80-85 are you letting go of the handlebars “ like WTH… Still one of my favorite motorcycle that I’ve owned..
Like your videos I have a 2021 pan America it has 27000 km on it nearly 2year old great bike the dealership I brought from great to deal with the bike has had all the issues you had with yours all fixed under warranty never left me strand so overall very happy and a great bike to ride
I’ve already had to change dealerships as well. Harley needs to address its franchise owners on building and growing the brand rather than diminishing it.
Great video and your vids have been key to me getting one. Seems the big thing here is how the dealer acts when you have an issue. I've only 3 dealers to pick from but so far, I've had a back brake issue and they are more than happy to bring it in ASAP for a fix. I've not had any other major issues, some false starts but they are aware of this and the SB's will be done shortly. The Nav on the bike is pants.
Great review and summarization of the good and the not-so-good. I can say pretty much the same regarding my 2021 PAS in almost every aspect although I have to say, the service I have received from my local dealership and the one I bought the bike from has been stellar. I do have the ominous fuel pump noise and have considered trying to get it replaced, I've had to have the engine replaced with no questions from the dealer, So all-in-all I'd agree - I would buy this bike again, and I may very well do that at some stage to make sure I do have a model with all the fixes taken care of.
Great video! I bought my dealer's '21 demo bike, so one of the first Pan Americas made, and other than the exhaust shield and starting issues fixed by software, it's been flawless. As you said, it's not the case for everyone, but I guess I got lucky! I love my PAS, but my gripes are exactly the same as yours. I really hate that I had to install Zumo XT to get real nav, and those media buttons are just decorations.
You are 100% correct about everything. I replaced the windscreen system with Madstad, fixed. Not sure how widespread this is, but I tell you, when the fuel reserve light first activates on my my bike it turns off the ARH feature. If I turn the bike off and restart it, the ARH turns on even though the fuel reserve is on. I would buy the bike again too.
I have a 2022 Pan Am Special, like you, my software was not up to date, I updated my software myself, it was realy easy. I had the starter issue, they replaced the starter clutch for me, under warrentee. I still occasionly have battery problems, with it losing charge over night, haven't been able to get it replaced. Other than that, I haven't had any other issues, except for the radiator hose being too close to the exhaust header, mine started to get a burn spot, so I shortened it, and wrapped the header. I have the Army Green version, I really like the colour, I don't like the white front fairing and either orange/yellow/blue tank; but I do like the overall shape. I love the different modes and custom settings. I prefer the lower screen, with a small extension thing from Amazon, I get no buffeting around mt helmet.
The kind of reliability I would expect from a used 10 year old motorcycle. Still very interested in the Pan America, but I'll be giving them a few more years to iron out the issues.
The biggest problem with Harley Davidson is their dealerships. Unfortunately you will need them occasionally. I’ve had similar dealership issues with some European bikes too. With Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasaki bikes that I’ve had I never had to interact with the dealers after the sale so can’t speak to their customer service.
Mike that was good review entertaining and thorough - Im sure they will / have to work some of those issue out . Poor service no excuse on that one if want market share - regards James
Despite having a few more issues with my PA Special 2021 than you, it's a great to ride, love it. My recommendation, if you want to enjoy driving Pan America, you must have a good HD dealer near you (updates and repairs), replace the plastic rear holder with a metal one (eg hepco&backer), replace the exhaust (eg Mistral) and add some guards (eg protect bottom and front of the engine, radiator...). Great review 👍
Excellent excellent video. I’ve watched several of your postings and you do a magnificent job. i’m considering purchasing by this bike just to do a series of reviews on it. Your review is just so thorough. I am glad you found a good dealer. You can trust and that you’re still enjoying your bike. Maybe if I make it to York, Pennsylvania we can go for a ride, I also have a RUclips channel. Check it out safe and in peace😊
Hi Mike, if you’re looking for new video ideas, may I request two topics please? One showing us how to replace the grips and possible aftermarket grip options and another one explaining how to make sure the computer on the 2021 is updated to the 2023 specs and what main changes are offered from that flash? Thanks!
Had a 2021 for two years. I tried to like it. Learned to hate it. Couldn't wait to scrape it off my shoe. Have a Low Rider ST now and I'm MUCH happier. Don't miss the PA one bit
Sorry it didn't work out for you, but good to hear you found something you like. If for any reason I ditch the Pan America in the future, I'm definitely sticking with an adventure bike though.
Dig the Motoports. I've had my set for over 15 years. Once serious get-off in at about 550-60mph, no injuries. The jacket has a slight scuff; The only evidence of something happening. Since I ride standard and cruiser bikes, if I would buy today, I'd get the the waist length, jacket.
Great video! Thanks for the honest details. I can confirm like everything after 10 weeks and 11.000 miles. Tough season start here. Unfortunately I got stranded 3 times. Just no juice on starting. Probably 1 time it was my fault - ignition on for 10 minutes talked to a friend - didn't start after that, still, no other bike would have struggled. But the other two times I was just riding all day. Next morning "she" was dead. Strange thing. It didn't sound like something was "out of power" but it always restarted the whole display and resetted the time? Every heard of something like that? Thanks in advance, Mike
I lasted 1 year with my 22 PAS. Crappy electronics, dead screen at times, and mine also died in the middle of an intersection which I coasted to the curb because as you know there’s no immediate start up (super dangerous). This happened 2 more times so I sold it back to the dealer. On a BMW GSA now and it’s an absolute superior bike in comparison. Hey, I tried the PA and the bike imo was the worst I’ve ever owned.
Ouch, yeah if I had more issues with the bike shutting down while riding, I'd probably be looking elsewhere too. The GS is a great bike, hope you enjoy it!
Have you got a vid coming out on your baseplate and other bars? Did you go aftermarket or HD? If so why? Your past choices all seem well researched so be keen on your thoughts
The skid plate is the HD one. The decision was simple as it was the only one available when I bought my bike. It was one of my first add-ons. The bars are stock with A1 Cycle risers.
I have a Sportster S 2021. The start sometimes (but rearely) doesn't start. Same sound. Now I know the answer. The NAV basically didn't work for now. Often, the basemaps don't work at all. The system locks up. Sometimes the display's time of day resets to 12:00am. I think all of the same root of problems. A recent android auto app update provided some improvemnts to the nav, but still is pretty bad. one more thing: I had the front ABS wire pinch because of bad routing. I repaired it, but I would expect taht HD recall it with a fix of using proper rubber ties to secure it away from the pintch point.
No problems with my dealership at all, they are very helpful and have the best service. So all in all I'm satisfied with the bike after 12k kilometers..
Another outstanding video! Thank you. My fuel pump has just now started to make that intermittent screeching sound when the bike is turned on. Do you think I can get away with changing just the strainer? Or do you believe that sound is an indicator there’s already damage to the pump?
Is your warranty up? If not, I'd push for the dealer to replace the whole thing. If it's out of your pocket, you could try just replacing the strainer, but if it were me I'd probably just replace the whole thing anyway once you have it pulled apart.
@@MikesMotorbikeChannel still under warranty. The pump is on back order; however, I found one at a dealership. May just pick it up, along with a strainer, and have it. I could probably sell save myself $350, but I like the idea of having one just in case. Also, I purchased a side stand spring mechanism from Wunderlich, and now my side stands snaps down with confidence.
@@MikesMotorbikeChannel also looking forward to a permanent solution to the fuel pump issue. I’m going to try to swap out the strainer every 5K miles now that I have a new OEM pump installed.
Hey Mike, I liked the video! Very informative and quality. (as usual) After hours of online forum browsing and no concise answer to the "whine-of-death" issues, a detailed cause and fix with a description with the steps taken at the dealer ship was nice to see. FINALLY!! I noticed you didn't bring up the radiator hose issues (too close to the exhaust) some people have been having. Do you have any info on this problem or have you not heard of this yet?
I was told the radiator hose issue was fixed with the 2022 model. There DOES appear to be a larger gap on mine and I don't see anything out of the ordinary with heat from the exhaust.
@@12345....... service manual says the factory spec is 7mm when cold, which is just a tad over .25 inch. I use a number 2 pencil to check it, the pencil should be able to follow the contour of the exhaust without touching radiator hose.
Hey Mike, another great video brother! What riding gear do you use? The pants look more comfortable than most I’ve tried. The high waist looks like it doesn’t dig in or ride down on long rides. Thanks.
Like your channel...not a bike I'd be normally looking at right now, I'd rather have a few different bikes than one expensive toy,but the market for P/As has literally collapsed in the UK, £6000 off list, with shop floors still having '22 unsold! I'm actually related to the Davidsons, back here in Scotland, the grandfather of the HD one, might explain why I've visited more HD manufacturing plants than chrome brigade, including York? (just found that out 3 weeks ago while clearing my old mother's research into the family tree). Maybe i need to have a clear out and buy one,in this current buyer's market?
I have a’21 special as well. It’s been the worst bike I’ve ever owned. I too had the heat shield bracket break, 7000 miles my Stator quit. I have been stranded, and trailered. 5 software updates too. I have a great dealer, but I hate being the R&D department at my expense. BTW, I installed the Barkbusters Hand Guards after watching your video. 👍🏻 they are my favorite part now 😊
Hi Mike, thanks for the video, excellent, exactly the same thing is happening to me with my 2022 pan with 10k miles.. and I have taken the bike to the dealer 4 times and they don't do anything.. I already escalated to costumer care to see if they can help me. solve, what was the part that they changed?
Rule of thumb. When Harley has a new model wait for at least the 3rd year of production before buying. With this being such a departure from their standard motorcycle, maybe the 4th year.
thanks for this and your other PA videos. I just bought a new '22 yesterday from my local dealer. I never have paid this much for a motorcycle ($4k is the most i had previously spent.. i usually get "projects") so this was a huge leap of faith for me. But after trying all the touring bikes, this is the only one that felt right. PS, do you have a list of all the parts/upgrades you've done?
A1 Risers Seat by Mean City Cycles Harley Davidson upgraded skid plate, muffler guard, and big foot kickstand Ebay special radiator guard Clearwater Krista aux lights Denali aux brake light Lone Rider Moto Pegs Adventure Bike Pegs highway pegs Mosko Moto tank bang and 35L Back Country Panniers Givi 30L top case. And I just added a shorter windscreen from National Cycle.
Have you had any experience with the wheel bearings? I have 16k on mine and the rear feels very gritty when rotating. The dealership has stated they must be pressed out/in. I dont have access to press and grand total they want $450 for parts and labor.. Thank you for the excellent videos and information!
I've not had to change bearings on my Pan America, but I have done it on my Road King before. The bearings are actually the same part numbers for my 09 Road King and my 21 Pan America, so the same tool should work. This is the tool I used to press the bearings in and out, which is similar to the Harley Davidson tool. A hydraulic press is not needed and is not the method described in the service manual. amzn.to/473BEMt HD Instructions: serviceinfo.harley-davidson.com/sip/content/document/view?id=1183933561007665215
@@MikesMotorbikeChannel Got it. I heard some stories about dealers not committed to the bike because of what happened with the VROD. My dealer has been supportive. Game Changer.
thanks, I'm a motorcycle instructor and that requires presenting several hours of classroom material. I strive to always be improving so I don't put people to sleep.
Been a great bike for me, just the parts shortage has killed my summer after needing some TLC... Took the bike in June 2nd and only on the table for September because parts have been back ordered....shame
ouch.. I've been lucky in that regard, the few things I needed fixed, the dealer was able to get the parts and get the job turned around in just a few days.
Why do you NOT NAME THE CRAPPY DEALERSHIP? If they refuse warranty service. Then they should not be in business. Also everyone Needs to call their states Attorney Generals office and file complaints. When dealers refuse to honor warranties!
Mike, you're far too patient! I would have dumped that Pain America after having your experiences and bought a Honda/Yamaha in a heartbeat if only for peace of mind and enjoyment of a reliable bike. No more Harley's for me, my Twin Cam Road King was in the shop for warranty work so frequently people thought I was an employee at the dealership.😕 HD just doesn't care.........
You will have to let everyone know which dealership that is and put that all in their reviews for the dealer. I did that and it sure got a lot of attention from the dealership the fix the problem. They requested that I remove remove that bad review and I informed them that I don't think that that's necessary. Should have bought thought about that beforehand
If it was not for my dealership " Thunderbike " Germany i would have given up a year ago. Ahhhh the kickstand now that is not good engineering i have heard that " Wunderlich " in Germany are addressing the issue.
I recently added the extra spring from Wunderlich which does help.. if they come up with a new assembly that addresses the root issues, I'll gladly fork over more money to them.
Having gremlins on a new model bike is one thing, but having a dealership and/or a company that doesn't service the customer after the sale is another thing. After they sell you the bike they could care less....it's your problem now is their attitude and that sucks.
So, I just bought a 2022 Pan Am Special. I was stranded on the side of the Hwy less than 24 hours later. this was last Saturday 7/21/23 here it is 7 days later and my bike is still at the dealership and they have no idea what is wrong. It's irritating AF
@@MikesMotorbikeChannel I honestly don't know how to handle this, should I be patient with the dealership? They have been very nice and take full responsibility. It is wearing on my understanding because they have no clue and HD tech services are not as quick as I want. I want to have a bike and not a problem, this is a 2022 enthusiast edition, the only one they had. The bike has 242 miles on it
I am having problems with mine in shop right now.for the six weeks…but the dealership has been excellent I’m riding a loaner right now,, I hope they can fix mine.. but I’m riding the hell out of the loaner
I have a couple videos on the channel detailing chain maintenance. I'm not sure what a dealer would charge for cleaning and adjustments, but considering it should be done every 600 miles per the owners manual, that could add up quick. It takes me 10 to 15 minutes to clean / lubricate and check the chain, figure another 5 to 10 minutes if I need to adjust it.
Looks like I dodged a bullet there. I cancelled my 2021 order and bought the KTM1290S instead.... 17K miles\ 2 years later not a single sleepless night.
It this video I think I was still using a Card Pack Takk Slim. I’ve since swapped to a Pack Talk Edge, no improvement on how it performs when connected to the bike.
So I bought a 2022 and have been following your channel even before I owned it. I'm screaming in agreement with you. I haven't had any issues yet, but it's 500 miles in. The dealership experience is bull f s×+$. I understand techs are not familiar, but that is not YOUR problem. Cannot duplicate condition, and operating within normal parameters is what many dealerships (cars and bikes) will say. So much so I need a fridge magnet that has that quote. You have to tell people how to do their job. Harley could have spent an extra $100 per vehicle and made it proper. I understand apple and android because of licensing cost, but how about some usb ports and maybe a mount for mounting gps (if ford can put it in a bronco why can't Harley). The windshield is garbage and will be replaced with madstad. The front fender needs to be extended to keep debris from kicking into the unprotected radiator. I'm rambling now but if you're ever in Arizona, you need to run 89A. Also what do you do to keep you leg from roasting.
perhaps it's due to me being in PA, but still I've ridden in 95+ days pretty often and have not experienced any issues with engine heat or heat from the exhaust. I'm always wearing my Motoport Kevlar Mesh overpants when I ride. I also don't get stuck in traffic too often, so perhaps that is biggest factor?
Which leg? Left side on a 2022, is fan heat from the radiator. It is easily corrected by a fan air deflector available from harley or aftermarket. A cheap plastic one is now included on the 2023. There are better options for solid metal ones, cheaper than Harleys plastic one. I have the aftermarket one. Works great. If the heat is from the right side, it's from the exhaust. A couple of options are available, one from harley, and one aftermarket. Same thing. A cabon fiber piece that mounts over the original heat deflector. Not much help from what I read on forums. I've never tried it as I've never had a problem with excessive heat on the right side.
@@leonblack2651 right side from the rear cylinder exhaust just roasts my leg unless I have on 8" boots. I tried some heat wrap and it took the edge off, but still uncomfortable. I'm hoping for a more effective aftermarket heat shield soon.
@12345....... you must live in a hotter area than I do. I've run in 100 max degrees here where I live in Southern Oregon. Wear blue jeans and haven't felt much. But I traded in my air cooled twin cam. That was hotter than hell on the right side in slow speeds or at lights, so I may think the pan america is great by comparison. All I can suggest is what's currently available. The carbon fiber overlay. For 45.00, it may make enough difference for you to be more comfortable.
I’m 5’6. I am no where near flat footed. My son is 6 foot and with the bike lowered with ARH, he is just barely flat footed. I doubt a 5’8 rider would be flat footed.
My 2021 HD Pan America Special has been the best bike that I've ever owned. I've been very pleased with its performance and the service that I've received at my local dealership.
I’ve had my 2023 for 46 days, last 16 in the shop, no solution. I love the bike, but not pleased.
what was going on with it?@@ChristopherRuhmins

Name the dealership else they won’t change their ways.
Somewhere in Pennsylvania 😅
A sad day when a lot of harley shops were sold to investment groups and no more local owners. Customer service has gone way down hill,
I wanted this bike but my treatment was not good and i stopped by a triumph dealer and what a difference, they acted like the harley dealer when i bought two off my harleys but they lost my third purchase, tiger 1200 for adv now.
Dealer service makes a big difference with overall ownership experience.
Lone Rider pegs video was posted a few weeks ago if you missed it.
What Harley dealership did you buy your Pan America from?
Harley Davidson of Macon, Georgia.
@@georgepierce3595 ----Thanks for the reply brother.
Test rode the Pan Am at a motorcycle event…As a former Mx racer I loved how it felt…Never bought one but a year later picked up a 2018 Yamaha Super Tenere with 1200 miles on it and have been loving the ADV ride ever since….👊
Way better bike than the pan am
Kickstand, Not a fan. I've almost dropped it a couple of times.
I'm handicapped and this is SO much easier to ride then my Street Glide Special.
I think there are on sale for +/- $17K now. Worth every penny.
2022 Pan America here:
Dang. I need to mile mine out. At least I bought the extended warranty 🤞
Keeping my fingers crossed on mine as I hear stories like yours. Good luck to you with whatever bike you go with..

Great review. I have the exact same bike and had the same exact problems, to include having to go to another dealer. My engine was replaced at 11k. I am hoping that I can now trust the bike again on a long trip.
What was the engine replacement for? Was it covered by warranty?
Awesome video, Mike! I love Harley-Davidson, and the Pan Am is almost certainly the next H-D to go in my garage.
Agreed 👍
2022 with 2000 miles runs great so far. No problems what so ever. The only thing I don't like is the kickstand. If you load it up it drops even lower and you have to really tilt it to the right to get the kick stand down. Which is sketchy AF with all that extra weight on it. Other than that I love it.
I agree.
Awesome video, Mike! You personally are one of the main reasons why i got a pan america and i friggin love my bike. Im really looking forward to doing my 1k mile maintenance using your tutorial video. Cheers!
Thanks, glad you are enjoying the content.
Excellent detailed and fun review. Love your perspective and thank you for sharing. Interested in purchasing a used HD PA.
I miss the extra HP but that is about it.
great review i,ve been holding off buying one till some of the bugs have been worked out, sounds like things are almost there plus i have a dealership i really like
Great content/review! Final thoughts/summary are great!
Great video, an honest long term review, just what potential buyers need.
Great video man, thank you so much for sharing your experiences with this bike! I've been looking at them for a year but have a lot of reservations about buying something at this price that's so new.
I definitely feel like I rolled the dice buying this but luckily have not had any major issues so far.
I’ve heard of the right hand control module issue several times, but so far so good on mine.
Took it back to the dealership and they said “we couldn’t replicate the issue “ they ask “when you’re at 80-85 are you letting go of the handlebars “ like WTH…
Still one of my favorite motorcycle that I’ve owned..
Couldn’t agree more.
Odd, first I've hear of an ARH issue correlated with the fuel light.
Just to clarify, the only unit that can be updated by the usb port is the display screen. The other control units must be updated by the dealer.
Great video.
Exactly same issues I’ve had and never left stranded. I ordered a new chain and fuel pump if I go on a long trip.
I'm on a 22 Pan America special. 14,282 miles and my transmission ate itself. Sent metal all throughout the engine. Thank God for the warranty!
Yikes! Hope you got taken care of and no more major issues.
Big fan of Motoport gear, have had my gear for about 7 years now, and luckily have not had to test it. Good to hear yours have held up even longer.
Weak battery perhaps?
@@MikesMotorbikeChannel perhaps, I'll have a service appointment on Wednesday. But the bike is just 10 weeks old? Don't think so but you never know.
You hit the nail on the head. The gs is a far superior bike.
What an amazing video!
Thank you for sharing
Great video! Well done. I think you’ve sold me
I have a Sportster S 2021.
Not all dealerships are the same. Myers Duren hd in tulsa ok is my favorite 😊
Since filming this video, I added that spring as well, definitely helps.
No issues with the hose on mine, never touched the exhaust or burnt the hose, but I did trim a little bit and re-clamped it as a preventative measure.
I don't know what the gap is on the 21 but my 22 only has about .25 inch between
@@12345....... service manual says the factory spec is 7mm when cold, which is just a tad over .25 inch. I use a number 2 pencil to check it, the pencil should be able to follow the contour of the exhaust without touching radiator hose.
@@12345....... Also, I wanna say he told me the hose has a higher heat rating as well....
Hey Mike, another great video brother! What riding gear do you use? The pants look more comfortable than most I’ve tried. The high waist looks like it doesn’t dig in or ride down on long rides. Thanks.
www.motoport.com/
Spendy, but it's all custom made to your measurements and is high quality. Been using their gear for over 10 years now.
Thanks for the reply Mike, and the link. Stay safe out there and keep the videos coming!
Thanks for watching. Cool story about your heritage, thanks for sharing.
👍🏻 they are my favorite part now 😊
Wow, if I’d have been stranded that would definitely sour my opinion further.
Hi Mike, thanks for the video, excellent, exactly the same thing is happening to me with my 2022 pan with 10k miles.. and I have taken the bike to the dealer 4 times and they don't do anything.. I already escalated to costumer care to see if they can help me. solve, what was the part that they changed?
the failed start attempts were fixed by the updated starter clutch. Depending on when your 2022 was made, it may already have it.
Rule of thumb. When Harley has a new model wait for at least the 3rd year of production before buying. With this being such a departure from their standard motorcycle, maybe the 4th year.
That was the plan, but my impulsiveness got the better of me. 😁
thanks for this and your other PA videos.
A1 Risers
Seat by Mean City Cycles
Harley Davidson upgraded skid plate, muffler guard, and big foot kickstand
Ebay special radiator guard
Clearwater Krista aux lights
Denali aux brake light
Lone Rider Moto Pegs
Adventure Bike Pegs highway pegs
Mosko Moto tank bang and 35L Back Country Panniers
Givi 30L top case.
And I just added a shorter windscreen from National Cycle.
good, honest review!
Hd has a excellent dealer network is why i luv them..

Good stuff. I'm creeping upto my 10k. Wondering what dealer you had issues with. I'm thinking its the same dealer chain as mine here in Chesapeake MD.
Nope, the one in York has been good to me so far, the issues were further west towards a famous battlefield ;) .
@@MikesMotorbikeChannel Got it. I heard some stories about dealers not committed to the bike because of what happened with the VROD. My dealer has been supportive. Game Changer.
Sir, you are an excellent speaker/presenter. Is that part of a full time job you do?
thanks, I'm a motorcycle instructor and that requires presenting several hours of classroom material. I strive to always be improving so I don't put people to sleep.
how’s baggy pants even climb up on that thing?
They look badass 😍
Been a great bike for me, just the parts shortage has killed my summer after needing some TLC... Took the bike in June 2nd and only on the table for September because parts have been back ordered....shame
ouch.. I've been lucky in that regard, the few things I needed fixed, the dealer was able to get the parts and get the job turned around in just a few days.
I owned a lot of new Harley's,and most of the dealers are like this. I would never buy a new Harley from a dealer. I would probably buy used.
Why do you NOT NAME THE CRAPPY DEALERSHIP? If they refuse warranty service. Then they should not be in business. Also everyone Needs to call their states Attorney Generals office and file complaints. When dealers refuse to honor warranties!
depend of the dealer, some bad some very good,
Mike, you're far too patient!
If I experienced more issues like other owners have, I likely would have.
You will have to let everyone know which dealership that is and put that all in their reviews for the dealer. I did that and it sure got a lot of attention from the dealership the fix the problem. They requested that I remove remove that bad review and I informed them that I don't think that that's necessary. Should have bought thought about that beforehand
for the prices they charge, and their decline in sales, their service should be nothing less than exemplary
Some dealerships act like they are doing you a favor just by having thier doors open....
Just turned 20k miles on my KLR. Nothing broken.
I don’t think you could break a KLR if you tried. That’s one tough bike. 👍
So, I just bought a 2022 Pan Am Special. I was stranded on the side of the Hwy less than 24 hours later. this was last Saturday 7/21/23 here it is 7 days later and my bike is still at the dealership and they have no idea what is wrong. It's irritating AF
Wow! I’d be furious and would probably demand my money back or a new one. Hope they get you taken care of one way or another.
Yikes, none of my shop visits were longer than 1 week, but good they got a loaner for you.
What is required for chain drive maintenance on these and is it expensive to have the dealer do the maintenance?
I have a couple videos on the channel detailing chain maintenance. I'm not sure what a dealer would charge for cleaning and adjustments, but considering it should be done every 600 miles per the owners manual, that could add up quick. It takes me 10 to 15 minutes to clean / lubricate and check the chain, figure another 5 to 10 minutes if I need to adjust it.
They had a few bugs in the 1st few yrs, but they seem 2 have them worked out...
Looks like I dodged a bullet there. I cancelled my 2021 order and bought the KTM1290S instead.... 17K miles\ 2 years later not a single sleepless night.
The KTM looks like a sweet bike. Enjoy!
Con respecto al tema de que la moto se pare en marcha a mi me está pasando, a alguien le ha pasado el mismo problema? Saben de dónde viene este fallo?
My 22 has 18k on it in less then a year so far
I luv those very much 😊
My dealership said they cant keep them on the floor...
what's your height and inseam? Seat at lowest position?
5’ 6” with 29” inseam. Yes, I use the seat in the low position.
I want one soo bad. My finances are not good enough for it yet.
what's the bluetooth headset you using? thanks
@@leonblack2651 116 in Phoenix today. I'll check out the carbon fiber bit. Thanks
What hand guards do you have?

How tall are you? I am 5 8" do u think Iwill be able to be flat footed on this bike?
I’m 5’6. I am no where near flat footed. My son is 6 foot and with the bike lowered with ARH, he is just barely flat footed.
I doubt a 5’8 rider would be flat footed.
HD dealers are either awesome or total “Don’t give a f*ck”.
No, you should name the dealership. Make them pay.
