500km (310 miles) is my longest ride. It was across a desolate, barren stretch of the Northern Territory on a 44 degree day (115F) on a Yamaha R3! With that trip in mind, if you have the means to modify your bike to make it more comfortable and suited to your body type, you should. I have a raised, more comfortable seat, bar risers and a foot peg lowering kit going on the V-Strom soon. Will make it a lot more comfortable for my lanky arse and make long trips much more pleasant.
Ouch! I can't even imagine riding in that kind of heat! Yes! Anyway you can make the bike more comfortable for you is ideal! It's not always financially possible though lol or at least for those of us that are crazy, and every dollar I make it's like "I could buy such and such, OR I can fill up my gas tank X amount of times and go this far" XD I think maybe my brain is broken.
As the Magpie Flies That’s not crazy. It’s perfectly reasonable 😂 I got a healthy tax return this year which is going to be blown on motorcycle parts. And possibly a new drone.
Great tips, Amanda! 750 miles is my current one day ride, as I don’t do the Iron Butt style of riding. I’ve found, when doing a long distance to a destination, is to have the first day from home as the longest, then each day after, getting progressively less and less miles. If I start to feel drowsy/inattentive, then I stop for hydration. Hydration is not to be underestimated! All the best, Rob
Thanks Rob!! :D That's an awesome record!! :D I would def agree with the biggest miles on the first day plan! I always strive for that, but I can never get out early enough on the first day, so most of the time my second day is the longest then it goes downhill from there lol For real though. Water is SO important, and I feel like everyone underestimates how dehydrated we get sitting in one position on the bike!
Rik, I agree with you, it made for a long day. The next day we did 450 miles, to reach our destination. My wife, riding her own bike, was not particularly happy with me when we got there. 😂
I was actually just wondering about this… How to increase my mileage of riding and it popped up in my feed. Perfect timing! Thank you so much! This was so helpful! I am very new at riding. My longest distance so far is only 60 miles. But I’m hoping this year to quickly increase my mileage by starting out with little day trips and gradually increase to a road trip of a couple of weeks. You inspire me so much. Thank you for all your hard work.
Good advice Amanda. My longest multi day ride was in '21 when I rode 3 successive days to Red Lodge Mt. Three days of 500 miles each, both ways, camping in my tent each nite. Your tip on FOOD was perfect. Although I rode freeways expecting to find groceries or restaurants easily, that was not the case. Covid scares had most places closed, and some evenings I was lucky to find vending machines. At the very least from now on, I will pack jerky or mixed nuts to get me thru. The camelbak was a life saver. Riding I80 east of Sacramento Ca, in July, temps reached 106* F. For clothing I might suggest a cool vest as well. I put mine on over a t shirt. Keep it in a gallon zip lock bag. Fill the bag with water in the morning, letting the vest soak. Then pour out excess water and keep the vest in the zip lock until temps starts to get high. Stop and remove the vest from the bag, wring out excess water, and put the fest on close to your body. Put your jacket back on with a few vents open. This will slow down evaporation allowing it to cool longer. They are worth the extra time and effort. Any fairly clean water source will work. Does not need to be drinking safe. Keep up the good vids.
757 miles on my BMW MANY years ago was my all time best. I thought I was going to need a crane to get me off of it when I arrived at the motel. When Sarah was riding, we rode our Electra Glides from Oak Park, IL to Rochester, NY for a family gathering. On the way home, we adopted the 75/150 rule....at 75 miles, stop for a couple of minutes, get off and walk around the bikes. At 150 miles, fuel stop. One thing I figured out about packing a first aid kit is to Know what's in it and how to use it. This was a great video, Amanda!
557 miles was my longest leg of a 2 day trip from D/FW to Milwaukee, WI in July 2017. I wish I knew then what I know now from watching you and Tim and from my other long trips. I learned a lot of do's and don'ts on that trip, many of which you address in your video. Mostly I learned that although I wasn't nearly taxing the limits of my BMW R1200RT, I got close to taxing MY limits. More rest breaks, more water, more stretching, more Advil, and less get-there-itis! ;-)
Awesome! Thanks Michael! lol I know those feels I wish I could have learned a few more things about good gear before the Pilgrimage I would have been so much more comfortable lol
Excellent video, Amanda, very thorough. The longest I've ever done on a bike was 580 miles, coming from West Virginia to Hampton Roads on my first long trip. That day was a big push because I kept on riding further away from home on that trip, and on the last day had to make it back to be at work next morning. For a long day on the saddle I recommend a sheep skin throw. They're fairly cheap and make your seat instantly more comfortable, they repell water, are cool in the summer, and warm in the winter. The throw will add about one inch to your seat height, so beware if you have a tall bike. Once your butt gets tired of the sheep skin you just remove it and go back to a stock seat, and vice versa once you are tired of the stock seat. Repeat over and over for long mileage!
@@AstheMagpieFlies I got mine from $30 on IKEA, you can find similar at Walmart, Amazon, Costco, etc. The best would be to find a sheep farm and buy it directly. You want to buy the untreated sheep skin as it repels water better than the treated type.
500+ miles in one day in several rides. In the stretch from Portland, OR to Sturgis, SD...In a stretch from Beaverton, OR to San Fran to Yosemite National Park. These are the two I remember most. Breathtaking scenery.
Another great video Amanda! Lots of great advice! 605 miles is my highest one day, and it was too damn much! I was absolutely toasted when I finished! I try to move around during the ride to stay comfortable. I reach a point where comfort is unattainable...then I have to find my mental happy place. Music is a lifesaver for me!!
Right on. All the macho riders claim 900 miles a day but in reality that is just stupid. Taking a 5 min break every 70 miles is going to get you through the day without feeling beat up. 500 miles is a realistic limit and if there is photographic and scenic areas learn to cut that down a bunch. Light meals at noon is good so you don't feel hypoglycemic sleepy. We have been doing long trips yearly for 35 years and your advice is spot on.
My longest ride was 350 miles in one day. I have only been riding for about 90days so still have a lot to learn. Your channel is a inspiration and good resource for info. Thank you for being who you are.
Longest day ride (dawn to dusk) was 1100km (683miles) round the five passes (Porters, Arthur's, Haast, Lindis and Burkes) in South Island New Zealand. 13hours give or take a little. You really do learn what a pressure bruise is from this. Smallest seam or wrinkle in your clothing and man does it hurt. I've found that underwear with minimal seams is essential. I regularly do 670km (416 mile) "coffee" runs from Christchurch to Westport via Lewis and Arthur's Passes. Also recently done a 740km (460 mile) lunch run from home to Fox Glacier village and back. Best 2 bits of advice for long runs like these, apart from the obvious about bike preparedness etc is take lots of micro breaks, stop at least every hour for 2-5min and get off the bike and move around and drink heaps. Mostly water or lightly flavoured (this IS the correct English spelling) water (lemon or lime juice in it) but tea and coffee are OK if they are your normal tipple. Whilst diuretics your body does adjust to them and they are mostly di-hydrogen oxide. Ride a 93 BMW R1100RSL (240,000km) and a 2001 Ducati 900SS (75,000km). Either one although the Duke riding position is getting a bit much for the longer rides (I'm 64). PS. NZ does not have interstates. These are all twisting coastal or mountain routes.
Awesome! Truth! No-Seam Underwear does make a big difference. Also learning that riding in nylon pants under my riding gear or pretty much anything but Jeans is so much better XD
My record, 1558 miles in 28 hours, but not all of my rides Iron Butts. What makes me most comfortable? Without any hesitation, music! No gear fits me well, 5’3”, 180, stocky! Another great video, Amanda. Thanks.
You nailed this video Amanda! I don’t really pay attention to the number of miles. I’ve done a few 12 hour days and that about cripples me. Definitely getting off the bike frequently matters. I have an upgraded seat. It was the main reason I bought the bike I currently have. The right gear for sure! Taking the time to stop and enjoy the sights... priceless. Washing the bike! My husband rolls his eyes, but it is a great way to go over the bike. I’ve prevented a number of little problems from becoming big ones just by being mindful and giving my ride a good rub down. Great video!
Longest trip for me was 580 miles in a day, though not on purpose. :). I hit a mountain pass that with serious snow fall, had to turn around and go all the way back south to the desert (Mojave) just to cross over mountains that were low enough to not have snow. Good times. My number one thing for comfort is my camel back. If I'm dehydrated, it's no good. Great video, thank you!
Some great tips here, Amanda. My favorite was "don't knock it until you try it" 🤓👍 - so true for so many things! The most I've ridden in a day is about 250 miles. For me, the biggest single factor is temperature. I've ridden when I've barely been able to stop shivering (really unsafe) and where I'm just drenched from sweat (also unsafe). Like you mentioned layering and being prepared are HUGE when riding long distances.
Thanks so much :D lol for real though! A bunch of my Harley friends give me so much shit about my Textiles but they have no idea how much more comfortable they'd be. Yes! lol been there man, before I figured out how to layer properly I did a lot of dumb riding in really dumb conditions lol
Hi Amanda, I have driven 1000 miles in 18 hours once on my Burgmam 400 scooter. That was way too exhausting. What I like to do is stop and enjoy scenic areas or stop and read historic markers to learn of the history of the area I'm riding through. It usually gives me a much needed break anyway. I again want to say I really enjoy your videos, especially your personality. Very positive and real. You remind me of my youngest daughter Melissa, who lives in Maine and I miss.
First of all - excellent videos. Good quality and genuine. Amanda, you are clearly a talented artist. I did a back to back Iron Butt Ride 1000 miles in one day (20 hours slept a few hours) and then 1500 miles in 34 hours. I ride a Kawasaki KLR 650. I had the stock seat widened about 1 inch and excellent quality foam was installed. I also check my posture as I ride, I take secondary roads whenever possible so I am turning, stopping, starting, and the single biggest benefit comes from mindfully relaxing the muscle of my upper body - primarily shoulders and neck. Long rides are just like eating an elephant - one bite at a time.
Thanks so much David! Movement is so important! Sticking in one position isn't good for nobody anytime. I find that I normally clench my jaw and have to remind myself to relax so I don't get neck pain lol
Awesome tips thanks! My longest day was 450 miles. We like to take the back roads to avoid the Interstates - we find that this can take 2 or 3x longer but enjoy seeing things that are off the beaten path. I think the things that help me with comfort the most is a windshield and my seat that has a gel insert :)
Oh girl, that camel pak saved our lives on our trip to AZ a few months ago! Having water without having to dismount, best thing ever!! Thanx for all the other tips, will definitely be using those!! 💜💜💋💋
Great little video and to the point. Best miles I've done is 450 on 2 lane roads in Montana in the early 70's. Most comfortable, good after market seat, stoping every 1.5 hrs. If your not having fun why do it.
Longest was about 600 miles. I have done multiple 500 mile days to get some place needed. Like after a great trip to Maine and had two days to get home to Ohio. 1015 miles. Best needed item for me on a long trip is my Air Hawk seat pad. Love it!
This a really great video. Super great advice. The only thing I would add is: 1. consider adding highway footpegs if you are going to do bigger miles regularly. 2. If your seat isn't comfortable after 100 miles it's not going to get better. Sheepskins, Air Hawks, inflatable camp seats, or (more expensive) customs saddles are a good option. My long day: 1520 miles. San Francisco to Kearney Nebraska. Followed a few hours later by 1515 miles from Kearney to Atlantic City.
Excellent tips and words of Wisdom. So much great advice to ensure a relaxing and enjoyable ride. You are awesome!! I haven’t really kept track of my longest day ride but it would probably be around 300 - 400 miles. Also, I tend to take a jump start battery with me to protect against weak motorcycle battery. It also doubles as a device charger.
Back in the mid 80's I rode my 750cc Moto Guzzi 1500 miles from South Dakota to North Carolina with gas and stretch breaks only, 24 plus hours straight. I was in my mid 20's then and I did some really stupid things when I was young. My Guzzi had a great after market seat and I packed gear so I had a back rest, it had a fairing and windshield, foot boards, and a throttle lock. Just this year 2021 in January I rode from Clarksville, TN back to Eastern North Carolina in one day, 614 miles on my 2013 Super Tenere. It took just under 9 hours. I may have missed Amanda saying this, but break in your back side by taking longer and longer rides before you take a long trip.
Longest single day on the bike was 1063 to document an Iron Butt,, but never sent in the paperwork. Did a fund raiser for my church's food pantry and rode 48 states in 23 days. 10,500 miles in total. Lots of fun.
Longest mileage: 1,035 miles for an Iron Butt Saddlesore. One thing for long days--frequent stretch breaks, at least at every gas stop (~200 miles). When I did my SS, I had brought my ENO Single Nest hammock and strung it up at a Georgia rest stop in the picnic area. Made for a better trip to be able to take a 40-minute power nap.
Did 867 miles in one day from Reno to Tucson....in July, so it was hot and barren most of the way. Had to stop about every hour to cool ourselves down and drink fluids. Walked into the convenience store and enjoyed the air conditioning for about 5 minutes which helped a lot. Clothing being comfortable was the best thing. Even the smallest thread or piece of glove which is poking at you can be annoying if it pokes for any length of time. Our trip took 17.5 hours but made it home safely around 2 AM.
My longest in one day is about 550 miles. I was on my 09 Suzuki Boulevard and would stop every two hours for gas. That was somewhat doable on that bike. Age and arthritis are not your friends when motorcycling. Now, even when on my sport touring bike, i “try to stop” every 100 miles which is usually about 1 1/2 hours. Age and arthritis still aren’t my friends lol. Back, knee, and butt take turns hurting no matter how much I adjust. I like to keep it to 200-250 miles a day if possible but with time constraints and distance I usually push it to 350-400 a day with lots of water and small portion healthy eating to get me there and able to recuperate. Great tips and thanks for sharing!
Great advice. I always add 2 hrs. To what Google says. The most I have ridden in a day was 450 miles. But my longest day was 396 mi. Since about 50 of it was dirt. Staying a comfortable temp makes my ride more enjoyable. Here in Arizona we can experience huge temp swings in just 100 miles
Of course while I'm typing you put questions in at the end lol On that quick trip to Sturgis we did about 780 miles that first day. The thing I really want on my bike is a good comfy seat because I've made some long trips on bikes with not so comfy factory seats and one on my old hard tail and I have to say a great seat goes a long way!
My wife got me a Goal Zero 70, that I use to recharge electronics. Thing is amazing, charges my phone 4 times or so on one charge. Another great video!
Great tips - I only do short rips out and back to home on the weekends so far (my longest single out/back trip has been about 200 miles) - ultimately I would like to stretch it to some overnight trips (not camping) - then maybe if in the cards and adventure bike in the future. But your tips still apply even to us short rippers - sometimes I focus so much on loving the technical part of riding, I don't really "stop and smell the roses" long enough during the trip - so I need to work on that... :)
Something a bit over 600 miles in a day - We had a year where we did that 3 times! Since then, I decided 400 miles is my limit for transport, otherwise, let's just haul the bikes or break the trip up into more days. Having a custom seat has been the MOST AMAZING IMPROVEMENT! It was 370 miles before I even noticed my behind this last trip! And taking breaks. I'm a "just push through" kind of person, but taking breaks makes it so much more fun. Snack, water, photo, then ride. :)
lol it is a lot! More days can sometimes make a trip a bit more enjoyable overall! No sense in rushing to a start of a route if you're already tired when you start 'the trip' Yes! much to be said for a better seat and lots of breaks!
Another great video, Amanda! One thing I'd mention getting sick. Had some bad food made a 420 return-trip (was heading back) unbelievably difficult even stayed at a motel. Learned to eat ice chips, throw ice down jacket the next day and LOTS of Extra stops. Time was ticking and sometimes money isn't considered when you need a motel for those types of situations. (Side not I informed staff b4 I left to use gloves or even masks in cleaning my room in hopes they wouldn't get sick). Otherwise the longest run in one day 760miles on a Good straight trip home to see family. Thanks for all you do in setting up these videos! Ride safe🏍
Longest jaunt 800 miles from Panama City Beach to Dallas (home) last year on an Indian Springfield. It was grueling especially along I-10 in a construction zone! 🥵 Same trip this year 750 miles Dallas to Elba, AL and stopped at Jazz fest in NoLa on the way home from PCB. I have a couple 600 mile legs coming up in a few weeks, this time on the Roadmaster. So I'll be comfy. I'm loving all my road trips.
I’m on a long trip right now actually:-) I asked Tim (40 Times) how he stays charged with electricity. Waiting for reply. How do YOU stay charged??? My bike will charge my phone but doesn’t do a great job on my battery pack... so I “limp” to an outlet (Starbucks or restaurant) & get 45-60 minutes of electricity & pray! Other tips would be great, thanks (-: LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!!! Keep it up, you are great(-: Oh! & I rode from 90 plus degrees to the 50’s & didn’t pack the right gear... your words are wise!!! Longest miles = 500 Discomfort = shoulders & butt
Thanks Rik! I use a combo of like 3 battery packs and a charger attached the battery on the bike. I only use the bike charger when the bike is running and all the rest of the time at camp I use the battery packs. Maybe try a beefier battery pack? I have this one that also has an AC plug on it as well which is great for laptops etc. amzn.to/31j9rP5 But also this one which is smaller but should have no problem charging your phone amzn.to/2MFPzBN
I've bought a number of motorcycles on Ebay over the years. I like to Fly and Ride. This particular trip took me to Syracuse, NY to pick up a 1998 Honda CBR 600 F3. I didn't get on the road after picking the bike until about mid day, so I only made it as far south as Columbia, MD. I got on the road at 6 AM the next day. I made it home to South FL a little after midnight and 1057 miles.
@@AstheMagpieFlies Well, selling them is not the initial intent. However I guess that is ultimately what will happen to them. I buy bikes we (my wife and I, she rides her own) want to ride and own. Currently have a stable of 4 Honda CBR 600's. 2 F3's and 2 F4i's. I mean, you need spares right? Since 2005 we've purchased 8 bikes off eBay.
Oh, I love seeing the Maryhill Stonehenge (aka Fauxhenge) in the background! Great video as always! I’ve done close to 1000km (600 miles) in a day. I was not loving the last couple hours! My butt hurt so much that I would move it to the pillion seat to relieve the pressure. My AirHawk seat cushion helps a lot these days, but I still don’t ever wanna ride that far in a day again. I documented my recent 10 trip with lots of photos and short videos. That was a good excuse to make myself stop more frequently and spend a little bit of time off the bike every 30-60 minutes or so.
lol awesome to see someone recognize it! I feel ya there! the first time I did 600 miles the last 2 hours were the worst lol. It got easier over time, I do it mainly when I stay an extra day at home in Montana, and go from Corvallis to Portland in one day it's like 620 miles or so. Yes! Photos are a great excuse to stop more!
My longest to date has been Atlanta to Baton Rouge... I learned a lot... it was August so hydration was topic number 1... also I stay in shape in my private life so that was a huge help. Know your limits. The most fun were gas and rest stops... everyone just looked at me with envy as they knew I was on an awsome adventure. Gr8 video. This about 550 miles btw.
1264 in 23 hours has been my longest 1 day so far. My motorcycle nemesis is definitely heat, though. I've researched many, many different ways to prepare for weather... but I can't beat the heat. It can be miserable. Oh... and to hell with those gusty winds that can cause involuntary lane changes, too! Keep up the great work!
Killing it! By next year your videos will be competing with Fort Nine, except you do everything yourself. My longest day ride is 1114 miles technically, as it was under 24 hours. But I've foolishly done a few 700-800 mile days too.
When living in savannah Georgia in the 80s. I drove home from an Army base I was stationed at -to central Arkansas continuous about 850 miles. Seems like it took about 13 hours. Hardest part was finding stations open in middle of night (before there was self pay) But I was young too. Now I ride about 250-300 miles a day.
First off, great video Amanda! You’re getting so good at this 🤙🏼 Longest day riding was my last day of the 2016 solo XC tour, 500miles from northwest Idaho to my hometown, Eugene OR. And the thing that makes long distance days easier for me, getting the tasty snacks (that I don’t normally buy for myself) and looking forward to eating them lol
AMAZING VIDEO AMANDA!! Great summary - We did 470 miles approx. once - We prefer to keep it under 310 on one day and exceptionally go over. Nice serious pics of you in the last seconds :) Thank you !
Your right on with your suggestions for riding long hours in the saddle. Last summer I rode a butt burner 1,000. 1,035 miles total. Just a couple of months ago I rode 830 miles in 16 hours. It was brutal. I've actually decided to slow down in the future. Not o my mph, but total miles per day as well. Gonna try smelling the roses.
Thanks so much Pierre! That's awesome :D lol I can only imagine. It's definitely a 'muscle' that has to be stretched, it's important to stretch it. One of those use it or loose it kind of things I think. The less you do it or the bigger gap between trips the harder it is to do it. I firmly believe in smelling the roses though ;)
I did my first longer Ride as a picked up my very first Motorcycle 2 days ago. I had to familiarize with her as i was going along riding home. It was a 1,5 half hour ride for a 60 km Distance. It felt like 3 Hours because i was so concentrated on my Bike. As i made it Home it felt sooo good. I was euphoric. Never felt like that before.
650 miles is my longest day. I own a Goldwing now so no comfort issues. Its a sofa on wheels🤣🤣🤣. Seriously though the best advice for comfort for me is stop once every 75 to 150 miles. Even for just a few minutes to take some pictures. Grab a snack. Or txt a loved one your location.
Doing the Iron Butt 48 States in 10 days ride at the end of Aug . The tips i'm picking up from you and Tim from 40 Times Around are going to be useful. stay safe and keep posting
850 miles on the last day of a solo cross country ride. From Wendover Utah through Death Valley to Santa Monica on my Ducati ST4. Dumb on many levels. Raced on the Salt Flats (that was fun!) and took off for LA at 6 the next morning. Got to Death Valley around 1pm when the temp hit 112. Made it to LA around 9. I should have split up the day and enjoyed myself instead of doing the marathon and ruining the experience - and giving myself heatstroke!
Furthest I have ridden in a day is 700km. It also winter so I left in the dark and finished in the dark. It was a big day as I done 2,600km over the previous 7 days with temperatures not much above freezing. This was in New Zealand where we don’t have interstates
1050miles for my first SaddleSore few weeks ago. I just keep moving on my bike, sitting on different spots. My wife was not amused me strapping one of her couch pillows on my seat. Also I prefer my leather suit, it just fits perfectly. But at the end of the trip there was a heavy hail storm and I was soaked. My bike only has a range of 125miles, so there are always enough breaks. Just remind yourself drinking and eating a little bit, every time you stop.
Longest ride in one day was roughly 600 miles. But I should note that all of my riding is done on a big bore cruiser (2018 Yamaha Eluder) and highway miles. Having a windshield large enough to create an undisturbed pocket of air behind it goes a long way toward comfort. Helmet buffeting at 75MPH can wear on you after just 100 miles. I also really don't like having to wear a full-face or 3/4 helmet. I much prefer a 1/2 helmet for comfort. Unfortunately, the Medium Yamaha windshield on my bike doesn't quite offer enough protection from road debris/weather, so on long rides I do take a full-face helmet and only wear the 1/2 helmet for shorter, pretty weather rides.
My longest day is 560 miles, riding my VFR800 home after buying it. A hydration bladder in my tank bag, a throttle lock, and chapstick make long days much more enjoyable for me.
Did over 600. Mostly interstate. I was trying to get somewhere. I would say frequent stops is the best thing. I ride Adventure bikes with crash bars around the engine. Put you feet up on the bars to change your sitting position helps.
My longest day on a motorcycle was 950 Miles because I read the map wrong. It was supposed to be a 750-mile day. I had a Goldwing there so 750 miles is pretty easy., the one thing that helps me do long distance on a motorcycle is relaxing. If I can stay relax and stay focused on the ride then my body does not get tired and I log more miles. Also staying hydrated; it is exactly as you said in this video.
Another excellent video! The longest in a day was about 550 miles and it included a few hours of off road. I really should have stopped more often to stretch. Not doing so made it very uncomfortable but like you said I was determined to make it to my destination that first day. And I was wrecked the next morning and that kinda impacted the rest of the day.
Thank you!! :D Yes Yes Yes! I've learned the "hey you need to stretch" lesson so many times, you'd think I'd learn the lesson a little better. It's hard to break that focus sometimes! Especially if there's anything that makes it a pain in the ass to get on and off the bike, like in the winter time I'm less likely to make stops because I wear glove liners under my winter gloves and it's SUCH a pain to pull them off and put them back on lol (that's probably a hint that I need another pair of winter gloves that are a little bigger and easier to wear over those glove liners XD )
360 miles across the AZ portion of the Navajo Reservation to Taos NM. Tons of stops for fuel, water, sightseeing, photos, and wine tasting. Whew, it was awesome! :D But my stock seat really sucks as I could only ride for one hour before I had to get off to stand and stretch. :(
my 1868 miles to an address near Corvallis, MT will be broken into three and a half days. I've done 800 in one day, but that was on a Goldwing which I used to refer to as my "6 cylinder Lazy-Boy" … with an 80 mph fan... Saw the comment below that 65 bought tix for RMR and you expect 30 to show... too bad, so sad. I'm looking forward to it being a great start for a 17 days of riding and exploring the great American west.
Great tips, love how you used some the clips of you pausing for the traffic at the end lol. I havent crushed any serious miles yet, the furthest I've gone in one day is about 350 miles. Lots of breaks and I should have stretched along the way because when I arrived I was basically confined to my hammock for a few hours to rest.
Very informative. Those were some great tips! The most mileage I've done in a day was about 800. As far as what makes me most comfortable I'd have to say my rain gear because I don't stop for rain and on my last trip a little Rain X on my helmet shield did wonders for visibility in the rain.
Hey girl, In your fresh cooking video, what was that camping cookware that you used. The stainless steel combo? I can’t find it and I want it. Oh and by the way, thanks for your help in helping me to break through my comfort zone and just doing it!!!!!!!!! You’re amazing.
As the Magpie Flies thanks a bunch. You’re reply was right on time. I spent all weekend on the natchez Trace riding my bike. Its not small at all. Its just perfect for me. Lol. Don’t stop making videos. RUclips is my television and your channel along with Tim’s is the best. You’re ups and downs inspire me so much.
Oregon 500 last 20 years. It's my long ride of the year. Have done close to 1000 on a 4 day trip but my butt doesn't like that. Have to try stopping more:}
Am slowly catching up with your videos. My longest ride was 1500 miles in 28 hours. Was very tired and was unable to find a comfortable position on the seat. Done with that style of riding because I missed a lot of beautiful scenery in Montana. I am also trying to do more non interstate or main highway riding. Just felt I was missing a lot.
Your tips are so helpful Amanda. Longest miles in one day? Hmmm. Only around 300 unfortunately. (Neck and shoulder problems but I’m hoping to fix this soon!) I definitely take breaks while riding. It certainly helps!!
When younger I rode a Hardly Ableson across the country. Maybe this is a guy thing, but my underwear was killing my leg. The double seam at the leg felt like ropes digging into my hide after several hours. They were also cotton that held body moisture, (avoid cotton clothing). I left them in a gas station garbage can. Much better. A sheepskin seat cover helped on the return trip as well. We would ride for three hours and take a brake, then ride two hours take a brake. Ride another 2 hours take a brake. Then stop for a brake every hour after that. By the end of the day an hour was a long time. We did 10 hour days. Our goal was 500 miles a day. To average 50 miles per hour you have to ride near 75 miles per hour because of stops. the wind can be a real bugger at that speed. I had a sissy bar that I strapped all my stuff to except the sleeping bag. I could lean against the cargo to take strain off of trying to hold myself up. The sleeping bag was strapped to the handle bars to break some of the wind off of my chest, (had no windshield). The trip was San Francisco to Virginia and back. We took 80 east and then returned on 40 west. The return trip was a real bore. Lots of the same scenery.
An IBA Saddle Sore is easy in Texas. Let me rephrase that: An IBA Saddle Sore is SIMPLE in Texas. There is a big difference between "easy" and "simple".
Just a few miles under a 1000 in one day. That was long but not totally exhausting. Worst was this same trip starting out in rain which turned into Biblical Rains, a 6 to 7 hour road trip to first destination turned into a 14 hour trip. Exhausting, nerve racking with semi traffic turning the rains into TSUNAMIS! LOL..but hey, its the adventure right! Still, so not a fan of riding in the rain at night! I really appreciate your vlogs. THANK YOU SO MUCH
I only have put 1300. Miles all together . . And I have put 77 miles one it just yesterday. I belieave that was my longest and. Plan on riding a 500 ish miles. To see an old homie. I'm going to watch this more for your info ty alot. N yes my 1st video I seen by you ty. Again. I'll be watching more
Some days I cant ride even 150km, others a lot further. I have learned to just to go with the flow and just ride as far as i am enjoying it. Stay cslm Amanda
Ace vid and tips, and what a cool structure at the end! :-) Most miles in a day was probably on my Moto Guzzi V7, I decided to go for a ride to my fav cafe for lunch, which was on the coast in Cornwall, I live in Sussex, it was roughly a 650mile round trip! :D I was walking around like John Wayne the rest of the week, but it was an epic adventure! :D As for most comfortable... I guess it is a PMA, the adventure, the explore, it 99% of the time makes all the discomfort fade to the back of the brain, at least until the bike is tucked away again at the back of my garage anyhows! :D
XD I imagine that Stonehenge is a bit more awesome lol but for us poor people that probably won't make it to the UK till we're old, the concrete war memorial will have to do lol
Longest day I rode was 780-someting miles, but I left at about noon so I was basically riding all night. I stopped about 20 miles from my destination and took a nap and then rode in and put up the tent and slept till like 11 or noon. :-) I usually rode 450 to 500 miles a day when I was just trying to get somewhere. Listening to music helps me stay focused sometimes when the road isn't very exiting or interesting. Also I started riding farther into the night as the wind dies down making it a lot easier to ride comfortably. Of course that comes with its own dangers but they can be mitigated too somewhat. Being as I ride a KLR, I don't go all that fast so I more just ride for longer. I think some people confuse discomfort with danger and thus don't expect as much of themselves as they could. Of course, not to say that you shouldn't make sure you're alert and your reaction time isn't slowing. Just now got to see this, good video!
Thanks Al-Can! That's awesome! lol in contrast when I did my big loop of Montana I think I maxed 175 miles a day on average lol but I only did 3600 miles in 2 1/2 months, not exactly going from coast to coast :P I like listening to audio books, it makes big flat sections go by a little easier.
Audiobooks are a good idea... I got an app called V-Radio Lite which is a huge collection of vintage radio shows, and they’re downloadable for listening out of service. There’s all kinds, detective stuff, music, comedy... anyway something to check out. Ride safe!
@mld I have the Bike Master Heated Grips, they're just really nice to extend your riding season in spring/fall or at least make it so you can feel your finger tips a little longer lol
My longest day was only about 650 miles. My longest trip was been only 6000 miles. But I did ride 1500 miles (round trip) for lunch once. Medical problems this year pretty much wiped out this year's riding.
That's my biggest problem is not stopping and eatting good when traveling to get somewhere I'm bad about just grabbing a snack at gas station. Around 600 miles. And what makes for great long rides that be my Roadglide it's great long distance riding.
Thanks to everyone for all of their awesome support, especially my new Patrons!

Longest section of a trip through Calgary into Idaho was 725 miles in July, just the best scenery ever.
It’s perfectly reasonable 😂
I got a healthy tax return this year which is going to be blown on motorcycle parts.
All the best,
Rob
Thanks Rob!! :D
That's an awesome record!! :D I would def agree with the biggest miles on the first day plan! I always strive for that, but I can never get out early enough on the first day, so most of the time my second day is the longest then it goes downhill from there lol
For real though. Water is SO important, and I feel like everyone underestimates how dehydrated we get sitting in one position on the bike!
LKLD FJR that’s FAR! I don’t care who you are :-)
Rik, I agree with you, it made for a long day.
Thanks Ren!
Yes!! I've heard good things about sheep skins!
Sheep skin sounds good
@@AstheMagpieFlies I got mine from $30 on IKEA, you can find similar at Walmart, Amazon, Costco, etc.
Thanks Sasquatch! Mental happy places are key! for sure!
Awesome!! Well done!
Aw! Thank you so much!
Thanks.
Awesome 👏
Yessss! Music & Audiobooks are a blessing
Thanks Robin!
I love your color grading, so many YT videos looked washed out. Yours pop and look amazing.
Thanks so much Todd!
Ouch! Sounds exhausting!
I'm the same, I'm easily distracted by pretty things and ghost towns XD
Thank you very very much for the compliment :)
That's awesome Lynn!
Yes!! Back-roads for the win! and for sure, never underestimate the power of a windshield, even a little one.
Oh girl, that camel pak saved our lives on our trip to AZ a few months ago! Having water without having to dismount, best thing ever!! Thanx for all the other tips, will definitely be using those!! 💜💜💋💋
YES!! Hydration packs are like the best thing ever, how is everyone not using these!? Thanks Bombshell!
Great little video and to the point. Best miles I've done is 450 on 2 lane roads in Montana in the early 70's. Most comfortable, good after market seat, stoping every 1.5 hrs. If your not having fun why do it.
Thanks man!
Longest was about 600 miles. I have done multiple 500 mile days to get some place needed. Like after a great trip to Maine and had two days to get home to Ohio. 1015 miles. Best needed item for me on a long trip is my Air Hawk seat pad. Love it!
Thats awesome :D
This a really great video. Super great advice. The only thing I would add is: 1. consider adding highway footpegs if you are going to do bigger miles regularly. 2. If your seat isn't comfortable after 100 miles it's not going to get better. Sheepskins, Air Hawks, inflatable camp seats, or (more expensive) customs saddles are a good option. My long day: 1520 miles. San Francisco to Kearney Nebraska. Followed a few hours later by 1515 miles from Kearney to Atlantic City.
Thanks so much Steve! Ergonomic stuff is so specific to the person!
Thanks MotoPappy!
Awesome! :D Thanks so much for sharing!
Longest single day on the bike was 1063 to document an Iron Butt,, but never sent in the paperwork. Did a fund raiser for my church's food pantry and rode 48 states in 23 days. 10,500 miles in total. Lots of fun.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing Bruce!
Epic! lol ya the weather can be really formidable! It's a lot harder to cool down sometimes than it is to heat up when it's cold!
Awesome! 250 is a nice comfortable number. Thanks Tommy!
Thanks Kevin! can't imagine riding in AZ in the summer! phew!
Of course while I'm typing you put questions in at the end lol On that quick trip to Sturgis we did about 780 miles that first day. The thing I really want on my bike is a good comfy seat because I've made some long trips on bikes with not so comfy factory seats and one on my old hard tail and I have to say a great seat goes a long way!
hehehe :P Comfy seats do help a little! At some point you just get flat butt no matter what seat you have lol
600 miles on an Aprilia Tuono was my longest ride. Fantastic advice!
That is AWESOME. :) Respect, Not sure I could handle that riding position for that long. My hat off to you!
My wife got me a Goal Zero 70, that I use to recharge electronics. Thing is amazing, charges my phone 4 times or so on one charge. Another great video!
That's awesome! Battery packs are a lifesaver! Thanks so much Gil!
Thanks! I hope you can stretch your comfort zone a little! lol everyone has to start somewhere!
No sense in rushing to a start of a route if you're already tired when you start 'the trip'
Yes! much to be said for a better seat and lots of breaks!
Ride safe🏍
Thanks Indianbell!
Dealing with sickness on the road is never fun!
Awesome! I can only imagine that construction in the heat!
Keep it up, you are great(-:
Oh! & I rode from 90 plus degrees to the 50’s & didn’t pack the right gear... your words are wise!!!
Longest miles = 500
Discomfort = shoulders & butt
Thanks Rik!
I use a combo of like 3 battery packs and a charger attached the battery on the bike. I only use the bike charger when the bike is running and all the rest of the time at camp I use the battery packs. Maybe try a beefier battery pack?
I have this one that also has an AC plug on it as well which is great for laptops etc. amzn.to/31j9rP5
But also this one which is smaller but should have no problem charging your phone amzn.to/2MFPzBN
Great advice, Amanda. Thank you 👍
I've bought a number of motorcycles on Ebay over the years. I made it home to South FL a little after midnight and 1057 miles.
eBay!? interesting!!
Do you just buy them online ride them home then sell them? That could be an interesting way to travel 😉
Awesome!! :) Absolutely, learning your limits is so important! Of course we wouldn't know our limits if we didn't test them now and then :P
My long ride was a little over 300 miles. Best to you!
Awesome!
Heat is definitely a challenge, thankfully up here in the PNW our highs aren't too bad. I can't imagine riding around AZ in the summer!
Thank you for all this great advice
Killing it! By next year your videos will be competing with Fort Nine, except you do everything yourself. My longest day ride is 1114 miles technically, as it was under 24 hours. But I've foolishly done a few 700-800 mile days too.
lol Thanks Chris! :D
lol OF course, I wouldn't expect any less. XD How long was your jaunt through Oregon? lol
When living in savannah Georgia in the 80s. I drove home from an Army base I was stationed at -to central Arkansas continuous about 850 miles. Seems like it took about 13 hours. Hardest part was finding stations open in middle of night (before there was self pay)
But I was young too.
Now I ride about 250-300 miles a day.
Great tips as always! We did just short of 300 miles in one day on our upstate NY trip. Hope you have a good time at Rocky Mountain Roll, ride safe!
Thanks so much! :D I'm stoked for next week! 65 people bought tickets this year, so I'm expecting around 30 lol
My longest has been rather short 384 kilometers. Timely stops, water, food and good gear keep me comfy. Oh, great video as usual.
Thanks so much!
First off, great video Amanda! You’re getting so good at this 🤙🏼
Longest day riding was my last day of the 2016 solo XC tour, 500miles from northwest Idaho to my hometown, Eugene OR.
And the thing that makes long distance days easier for me, getting the tasty snacks (that I don’t normally buy for myself) and looking forward to eating them lol
Thanks Maddy! :D Means a lot coming from you! :)
I know that 'get home after a long trip itis' lol been there XD
YES! good snacks are everything!
AMAZING VIDEO AMANDA!! Great summary - We did 470 miles approx. once - We prefer to keep it under 310 on one day and exceptionally go over. Nice serious pics of you in the last seconds :) Thank you !
Thanks Carolina! !
That's awesome! Agreed, under 310 is the ideal mileage in my opinion, even under 275 when making lots of tourist stops!
Some great tips! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Dad and Mad! :3
Awesome! lol Goldwings for the win!
Doing the Iron Butt 48 States in 10 days ride at the end of Aug . The tips i'm picking up from you and Tim from 40 Times Around are going to be useful. stay safe and keep posting
Awesome!! I wish you luck! That's going to be Epic!
Long mileage suggestion: If you don't have cruise control, adjust light drag on the throttle tension screw.
Well done!
About 350 miles of NH, VT and NY back roads, love my Transitions shield
Awesome! :D
Great input and true on all accounts!! Didn’t know about num tablets - will start using those on our trips!
Nuun tablets are my fave thing!
Just remember to rinse out your water bottle or water bladder after your trip because they do leave residue!
Moving is important!
Wendelin Zimmermann: congratulations on the Saddle Sore. Tony Yeley IBA 71243.
Good one! Happy travels Amanda
Thanks Seth!
That was awesome. Thank you very much.
My longest day is 560 miles, riding my VFR800 home after buying it. A hydration bladder in my tank bag, a throttle lock, and chapstick make long days much more enjoyable for me.
That's awesome! Yes yes yes! Agreed!
Lots of good advice through experience learned
Glad it was helpful!
Great video!!! Agreed with everything.
Yay, thank you!
North Carolina to Sturgis 2 days 1700 plus miles rock and roll
🙌 awesome Jeffrey!
Did over 600. Mostly interstate. I was trying to get somewhere. I would say frequent stops is the best thing. I ride Adventure bikes with crash bars around the engine. Put you feet up on the bars to change your sitting position helps.
Thanks John!
Just what I needed. Going on my first long motorcycle trip in 3 days.
Awesome!! :D I hope your trip is amazing!
Good luck and enjoy the ride.
Ooo! Goldwing!! AWESOME!
Thanks Bruce!
Thank you!! :D
Yes Yes Yes!
But my stock seat really sucks as I could only ride for one hour before I had to get off to stand and stretch. :(
Taking a break every hour or so seems to be pretty normal for a lot of people lol even the people who spend a lot of money on a custom seat.
my 1868 miles to an address near Corvallis, MT will be broken into three and a half days. I've done 800 in one day, but that was on a Goldwing which I used to refer to as my "6 cylinder Lazy-Boy" … with an 80 mph fan... Saw the comment below that 65 bought tix for RMR and you expect 30 to show... too bad, so sad. I'm looking forward to it being a great start for a 17 days of riding and exploring the great American west.
;)
Great tips, love how you used some the clips of you pausing for the traffic at the end lol. I havent crushed any serious miles yet, the furthest I've gone in one day is about 350 miles. Lots of breaks and I should have stretched along the way because when I arrived I was basically confined to my hammock for a few hours to rest.
lol Thanks Ricky! 350 miles is still a good distance!
Very informative. Those were some great tips! The most mileage I've done in a day was about 800. As far as what makes me most comfortable I'd have to say my rain gear because I don't stop for rain and on my last trip a little Rain X on my helmet shield did wonders for visibility in the rain.
Thanks Jersey Nick!
That's awesome! yes! Good Rain gear is the jam!
Yep. We needed it a lot in your home state of Montana. It’s a beautiful place, even if the weather tried to kill us a few times lol.
Hey girl,
In your fresh cooking video, what was that camping cookware that you used. The stainless steel combo? I can’t find it and I want it. Oh and by the way, thanks for your help in helping me to break through my comfort zone and just doing it!!!!!!!!! You’re amazing.
Ditto on the cookware, please
Hey! :D This one is what I got, be warned the pot is itty bitty lol amzn.to/2YiwawS
Very good video!! Ride safe ride far, Rand
Thanks Rand!
"Very good video!! Ride safe ride far." Ride OFTEN!
Excellent advice keep up the good work be safe I think my longest ride somewhere around 340 miles
Thanks George!
Oregon 500 last 20 years. It's my long ride of the year. Have done close to 1000 on a 4 day trip but my butt doesn't like that. Have to try stopping more:}
Am slowly catching up with your videos.
Yay! Thanks Steve!
That's AWESOME! I can't even imagine lol I'd have to take a different bike in order to do that kind of mileage!
Your tips are so helpful Amanda. Longest miles in one day? Hmmm. Only around 300 unfortunately. (Neck and shoulder problems but I’m hoping to fix this soon!) I definitely take breaks while riding. It certainly helps!!
Thanks so much!
For real it's a muscle that has to be stretched lol gotta build up to bigger miles, but only if you want to.
Lots of the same scenery.
lol Lukily they make seamless women's underwear so I don't really have this problem lol
Excellent advice.
Thanks Epic Adam!
Just over a 1000 for a IBA Saddle Sore. Four of us rode from San Antonio to El Paso and back. Took us around 18 hours.
Awesome!
An IBA Saddle Sore is easy in Texas. Let me rephrase that: An IBA Saddle Sore is SIMPLE in Texas. There is a big difference between "easy" and "simple".
Longest day's ride for me was 648 miles. Reno, NV to Bagdad, AZ.
Awesome!
THANK YOU SO MUCH
Awesome! Thanks for sharing Rodney!
I only have put 1300. Miles all together . . And I have put 77 miles one it just yesterday. I belieave that was my longest and. Plan on riding a 500 ish miles. To see an old homie. I'm going to watch this more for your info ty alot. N yes my 1st video I seen by you ty. Again. I'll be watching more
Thanks so much Tyrone!
I'm sure you'll have a blast on your trip! :)
Thanks Hippo-Drones! :D That is the Maryhill Stonehenge WWII Memorial in Washington along the Columbia Gorge.
It is cool, funnily enough, I had to ride past the real Stonehenge on the longest trip I did on my Moto Guzzi!
That's awesome! lol in contrast when I did my big loop of Montana I think I maxed 175 miles a day on average lol but I only did 3600 miles in 2 1/2 months, not exactly going from coast to coast :P
I like listening to audio books, it makes big flat sections go by a little easier.
Audiobooks are a good idea... I got an app called V-Radio Lite which is a huge collection of vintage radio shows, and they’re downloadable for listening out of service. There’s all kinds, detective stuff, music, comedy... anyway something to check out. Ride safe!
About 300 miles and my Oxford heated grips are the best thing I ever bought for my bike.
Yes!! Heated Grips are AMAZING, especially in combo with some hippo hands, they're like an amazing little oven for your hands.
@mld I have the Bike Master Heated Grips, they're just really nice to extend your riding season in spring/fall or at least make it so you can feel your finger tips a little longer lol
Oh yeah i agree, i did the same on my Harley...Heaven :-)
great points.
:D Thanks Kenneth!
All great tips, hope to put a few of them to the test next month :)
Thanks :D
My longest day was only about 650 miles. My longest trip was been only 6000 miles. But I did ride 1500 miles (round trip) for lunch once.
Medical problems this year pretty much wiped out this year's riding.
Thanks John! lol I hope that was a great lunch!
and always dont forget to add blinker fluid. :)
That's my biggest problem is not stopping and eatting good when traveling to get somewhere I'm bad about just grabbing a snack at gas station. Around 600 miles. And what makes for great long rides that be my Roadglide it's great long distance riding.
Thanks Doyle! lol It is hard to eat good while on the road! it's easy to fall into the gas station snack pit!
