- I'm hoping to educate people about the donation process from the donor's perspective. I had so many questions about what my life would look like post donation and it was very difficult to find answers. By sharing my story and my family's story, I hope more people consider becoming a donor because they know have these answers and realize being a donor doesn't have to slow them down.
After working in Higher Education and the fitness industry, Alyssa Bates is currently working as the Leadership Development Program Manager at Constant Contact. She is a marathon runner, Spin instructor whose experience as a kidney donor has enriched her life!
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. I'm going to the transplant center on Tuesday to undergo the final test to donate altruistically. Please keep your fingers crossed that everything goes well for me, and more importantly, the recipient.

This is pretty much my story except my wife donated to me in 2000-12-07, that day was a blessing, my transplanted kidney is still going strong after 19 plus years. My wife's generous gift has allowed me to live a full productive life and be there for her and our son.

My great-grandma lived to 102 with only one kidney, I can not recall why she only had one kidney most of her life but it goes to show that if you have a healthy lifestyle having one kidney will not affect the length of your life. She lead to a line of strong and healthy women and I am thankful I was able to have the opportunity to not just meet her but play with her, have memories with her, not many people get to even meet their great-grandma. So if you are thinking about donating, you know what's best for you, make the right decision for you!

I gave my kidney to my 11 month older brother I was very scared with praying to our lourd it was successful that was 16 years ago and we all doing great.. I got hbp out of it kept well at stable with tablets.. Was the best thing iv every done uv saved some body's life great feeling hope there is a bed waiting for in heaven

Thank you for making this TED Talk. When I decided to become a non-directed donor there was very little information and, to a certain extent, very little support. Most people called me crazy or tried to make me change my mind (what if the recipient is a bad person?) and all sorts of silly arguments. Even the medical personnel seemed suspicious.
It was really useful and reassuring to hear the donor perspective in such a no nonsense, light hearted way. It went awesome. Far easier recovery than I expected and my recipient is doing well. So thank you for your video which reassured me when it seemed like the rest of the world was trying to do the opposite :). In the end, it wasn't -that- crazy a plan.

I know how amazing it feels to be a kidney donor! Even though we weren't a familial match, we were a "perfect" match! Just under a month ago my kidney switched residences and now lives in Terry ☺️ who's doing phenomenally well! Please consider giving life! 💜

I'm in the process of going through testing and everything to be an altruistic donor and this video was amazing and yeah I did tear up a few times lol. That was so awesome of you to do that for your brother and thank you for making this video!!
I was diagnosed with kidney disease young as well. I didn't have to get a transplant until 1990 however. They don't last forever. When I was 27 I was back on dialysis. Then I waited 7 years and got another kidney. That one lasted 10 years. Now I am on dialysis again and getting tests done to be on the waiting list. I think this time I will do a search for a living donor.

How did it go? My mom got tested and was a perfect match but could not donate because she needed both her kidneys because of diminished function. They would not let her donate (in Canada).

I signed up to be a donor while in college. This is still very important to me. I consider myself a person that is ill and trying to get better to donate anything I am or will be able to give when God does call me home.

You are a good speaker. I am back on dialysis waiting for a kidney. Not yet on the list but just about to get on the waiting list. I am in Canada and Type O+ but because of scams I will only accept one from Canada. I have a Nephrologist in my city but they don't do transplants in my city. I also have a team of Nephrologists in the transplant hospital in a city that is 2 1/2 hours north of me.
I donated 11 months ago. Other than needing to drink heaps, the occasional phantom pain if I don't drink, and the scar pinging at weird times, I'm feeling good. I returned to work (specialist teacher) at 4.5 weeks, the gym at 8.5 weeks and martial arts at seven months. The martial arts I do has a very low risk of a kidney hit. I tell people that I'm glad I did it but don't intend to do it again any time soon.

I just donated June 1st 2016. Sitting up on the bed here at St Vincent's medical center in los Angeles California. I have some abdominal pain, not too crazy. The only thing is my bladder isn't emptying steadily; the flow is sporadic. I'm not sure if its due to the constipation that is due to the morphine. Anyways, does anyone have any advice on how my mom can continue to receive the medication after her Medicare is discontinued after the 3 years so her new kidney wont fail again? ALL ADVICE IS REALLY APPRECIATED! thank you!
Her social worker should be helping her figure that out before the three years are up.

Thanks for sharing this. During the evaluation process, I inquired about other runners' experiences and my living donor coordinator told me about your story. I'm happy & excited to say I'm scheduled to donate to my younger brother on October 17! How old were you when you had surgery? And, how long before you actually returned to running? I ran my 2nd marathon this past March and was planning to run another in March 2017. I want to set a realistic goal and would appreciate your suggestions!!!
Hi Karen--just saw this. I was 33 when I donated. The surgery was June 1st and I started running seriously in the fall--the marathon was in April. I was on the elliptical one month after surgery. How are you feeling? I was about 45 minutes slower than my fastest time but I felt great throughout which was my goal. I promise I will check back this week if you have follow up questions! Who was your living donor coordinator? I'm so happy to hear that she shared the talk with you. That is totally why I did it!
Thanks for responding. My coordinator at Duke was Tiffany Ragala but she left a day or two before my surgery. Sarah Rouch filled in and was geat. As for my surgery, well it didn't go as planned (ended up with a nicked colon and almost 3 weeks in ICU - so much for my plans). My brother is great though and I was finally cleared to take my first "slow jog on a flat treadmill" and did so last Friday. It was great. Now I have to begin to build my stamina and endurance in order to consider serious long distances like a marathon or even a 5 k :). p.s. I'm 57 and ran two marathons in 2015 and 2016.
I'm so sorry to hear about your nicked colon. Yikes--so glad you are back at it.....it will come. Just be patient. Which marathons did you run? Your brother continues to thrive?
I've run the Myrtle Beach Marathon twice. My brother is well, still adjusting to the anti-rejection meds.

My mum had a reaction to her vaccine. She has always had rare reactions to vaccines. But this last one put her into full renal failure almost overnight. I want to give her one of mine. I hope I'm a match
This is terrible. My sister had the Covid-19 MRNA gene therapy (so called "vaccine"), and her kidneys just started going down hill. Now she needs a transplant.

@@georgiabrisco2174 it took a few weeks to regain my energy and heal from the surgery, but no long term side effects. My brother in law had a longer road to recovery, but no regrets going through the donation process.
My 23 year old daughter and I are going through the process to determine my suitability. Heart stress test next week. I am 61 and feel I am maybe too old, but I am fit and never seem to get sick, and eaten well etc., We are both A positive. She has had chronic renal failure since birth. I would give both kidneys if I thought it would help. She couldnt have dialysis as her veins were too small.

It took me a little bit of time to get my energy back but I was back to normal 6 months post surgery! Congratulations on being a donor! I look at my brother thriving and it give me an extra shot of energy. :)

Have you tried to see if you're a compatible match? If you'r e not and healthy enough to donate you can participate in the exchange program, that's where two incompatible donors switch recipients. Keep your head up hon and stay positive your mother needs you right now!

@@tech_knowledgy it’s not that simple, even if it’s marriage of convenience it has lots of consequences for the person who need the kidney, people out there do anything to take an advantage of people in desperation. What happened after divorce? Most of the possessions of the person will go to the person who gave a kidney and what if the transplant also being a failure ( like mine has been?), then it will be double loss. I wish everywhere were like Iran which kidney purchase is legal through the regulated government body.

You can contact his hospital and ask what are the steps to get tested. If you are not a match, he doesn't have to know you tried. If you are a match, and find out all parts match you can then tell him the good news.
