I have a model y, and I legit just can't get enough of Gav reviewing any type of EV out there. You're such a refreshing presenter in the "auto world"and I wish you nothing but success and A BIG RAISE!
I test drove the top of the range OMODA E 5, this week. And have to say, after owning 2 KIA Sportagè GT turbo diesel’s, I was super happy with the comfort; minimal Tyre noise on rough surfaces roads, & very luxurious! Looks like I’m ‘in’! Well done Chery!🙌🏻
Indonesia produces the Omoda E5 for the first time outside of China. I think this car being reviewed was made in Indonesia since we drive on the left just like in New Zealand.
Old Zealand in the nether regions 😂😂 Being an Auckland resident I do hope to meet Gavin one day! As soon as your videos drop, I’m on it for a fun thrill ride 😊
I managed to catch Gav at Fully Charged Live(EE) in Sydney this year and had a great chat with him, fantastic guy. I had hoped to also talk to Richard but unfortunately was unable.
I think you should give the cars a nanny score...being able to turn off nanny features permanently should result in a high nanny score....I let you work out the details.
Always look forward to your reviews Gav! A lot to like about this car, great to see wireless apple/android and V2L at such a reasonable price point. I like the styling, prefer it's looks to the MG4. At 6ft tall my head might be brushing the roof, however
Hi Gavin, That driver attention monitor sure is a tad annoying. The Speed limit assist is also one that needs to be turned off every time. As it's seeing the recommended corner speed signs, then telling you that's the speed limit. The emergency lane keeping is also quite intrusive on a typical twisty, NZ road. I'm selling these, and took one out for a real-world range test yesterday. You can only get the claimed 15.5kw/h per 100km at town speeds. At open road speeds, on hilly + twisty roads, it gets between 20-22kw/h per 100km. So the real-world range is more like 300-350kms on a full charge. Which is comparable to the Atto 3 with the same battery.... I left Frankton with 98%. Did a route south via SH3, SH4, and the SH41 to Turangi. Made it to Turangi with 20% charge. Took 35 minutes on a 75kW DC charger @ Z to get up to 80%. I then took SH1 south back home. Given it was more downhill + a lot more traffic, so the average speed was more like 70ish, the efficiency climbed to an average of 16.8kw/h per 100kms. I made it home with 25% charge remaining. It does handle rather well, and soaks up bumps nicely.
That's a good car with all that tech for the price, I'm in the UK & NZD48,000 is £22,728 which is astonishing good value. Great honest review Gavin I'm looking forward to seeing them here.
Really enjoyable video as always! You always manage to surprise with the humor! But keep the videos complete and very informative at the same time. The only nitpick I have, id is that the battery warranty is 8 years, and you claim it's guaranteed to outlast the car itself... Well that doesn't bode well for the rest of the car! 1:30
We are very lucky in New Zealand. There is a wide range of different makes and models and one of the reasons we get them at an “affordable” price is we don’t have local vehicle manufacturing or assembly to protect with high tariffs on imports.
We test drove one by accident on Thursday, (It was round the corner from another dealership) Amazing value for what you get. The brakes do need some sorting to get better balance though
2:14 I don’t remember seeing those responses to that question on Facebook :D My favourite was “Ask your doctor if Omoda is right for you”. This is a brilliantly-presented video, I just love all the quips. Bright hot pants to a funeral 😂 Once again, we have an overpowered, tall, pretend-off-road FWD vehicle that won’t be so useful at the boat ramp - I wish they could put the same guts in a low, sleek four-door sedan or two-door coupe :) hopefully they will!
I know what you mean. There is an unhealthy obsession with SUvs. What’s wrong with a station wagon. To answer your question, maybe MG4 is the closest to what you are looking for.
Saw one driving towards me today. Thought wow, looks great, hope it’s electric. I searched for it on YT when I got home, that’s how I ended up here. I think it’s a good looking vehicle, that’s what grabbed my attention immediately. I mean c’mon, the Toyota CH-R is no fashion model and they are everywhere. I think this will sell very well.
LFP battery is a very appealing aspect. These launch in Australia late 2024, looking forward to local reviews and a competitive price. I'm sick of paying for petrol
When Cherry said they were returning to Australia I was disappointed they only bringing ICE and HEV at first, they definitely should have led with this thing, the way BYD did with the Atto3, which will be this cars primary compedator (and MG ZS). I think its looks both inside and out are very meh but fast charging is less of an issue than people think it will be. As for vechical to load I suspect that it will use the same system as BYD and MG and you can by third party adapters for those two so even if the official ones aren't available you might still get it to work.
I think this car is made in Indonesia, and there is a law in Indonesia where cars must be equipped with real spare tyre. All our cars are equipped with spare tyre, even Mercedes Benz must equip a spare tyre in the back of the car despite it doesn't have a designated place for it.
Omoda's 8 year warranty will likely outlast the startup manufacturer providing it. Should be reliable with an LFP battery though. Hopefully not too many wear and tear repairs and few parts replacements needed over the years as they may be difficult to find if the company goes out of business.
Chery exported almost million cars in 2023 ,more then double then 2022, and are now biggest car exporter from China, bigger then BYD or SAIC ,they want go out off business any times soon
What a world we live in when a full size spare tyre is a selling point. Greetings from the uk 🇬🇧 We have the new 2024 hyundai kona and this car and our kona look very simular from the front veiw.
I wouldn’t but a electric car at the moment as the range isn’t good enough . I just did over 600 miles in my car and I had over a quarter of a tank left , I sold my previous car because it had only a 9 gallon tank and would only do about 380 miles , also here in the UK charging away from home (which I do for over half my mileage) is so expensive 80 pence per KWh
They made it cheap by saving in the wrong places. The lack of a heat pump, poor battery insulation and slow DC charging make it unusable in areas with real winter.
Heatpump will only be effective Upto -10 C. , best at around 2-3C ..if you need anything below, good ol' Resistance heater is needed. Also if you are living in regular -20C it is recommended to use Nickel instead of Iron batteries.
Yet another great report Gavin. I personally think this car is better than its obvious rival the MG ZS EV but that bland 50 shades of black interior is boring and unfriendly to our (Aust/NZ) bottoms. You maybe forgot to mention that being LFP it can be charged to 100% overnight or whenever, every time (unlike lithium-ion NMC). That is a huge thing for me and many folks these days. I like the spare wheel but it leaves the boot almost in MG4/Dolphin capacity territory rather than Atto 3/New Kona EV territory. Nonetheless, well done Chery. Sorry mate but the Rav4 is a size up to this in most dimensions (540l boot as an example).
Doesn't look too bad, but the EX model is only 10k less than a base Model 3 which can travel further and is more polished and will handle alot better. It needs to be closer to 40k for the EX model for me to think it's good value.
if you have been watching his channel for the last year, you would know this is an old ev type word, also watch out for apple auto and android car play 😃
You asked for opinions on its look. That's subjective. For me, I am not sure if its looks will grow on me but at least I don't hate it at first look. I don't truly like the back though.
I can’t believe that it doesn’t have a heat pump. That’s a massive fail. Even my 60kWh BYD Dolphin, which is slightly cheaper, has a heat pump that works fantastically well.
Only issue I have with Chinese make is shiny and good while new, bought a Chinese electric bike, 3 years awesome, now battery dies half time did initially. personally not that brave .
So needs heat pump. I actually like no over air updates when supply is China's CCP. Could you clarify ownership. Is it Dutch or Chinese owned/made? JV? Whose controlling the software if there is a war?
Here is why you lose traction in the wet. Reminds me of a Holden Commodore I drove in Australia, where accelerating out of a corner I went into a spin in front of a truck. In this case, here is why - ruclips.net/video/SNNtyUomTSE/видео.html - there is no weight in the rear of the vehicle. Design imbalance.
Auto steer technology is not expensive! My Honda Civic 1.5 sport from 2021. has it, and it cost 27.000 EUR (around 30.000 USD). This is much more expensive, and it doesn't work...
Great review. I don't know about that quality thing at all. The reports coming out of China, that make it past censorship, don't bear that out. The new SU7 is getting lambasted for its abysmal quality. Japanese cars were a hit because of their initial quality, efficiency, and value. That's how they destroyed legacy auto brands here in America. Korean brand Hyundai was the one struggling with the value quality equation. While they've gotten better, they still have some pretty bad issues. I think I would definitely take Tesla's safety systems over "vehicle to load" while sliding around the roads. 😅
That is not "the reports coming out of China", but the cherry picked videos and incidents to paint something to be something else. You should probably find something better to watch than those propaganda channels like captain apartheid and "China observer" which never deliver truthful information yet western audience for some reason keep watching even though non of their claims turn out to be real.

China censorship don't censor the the report from China, it works the other way. Chery is actually praised a lot for the quality outside China, if you go to your neighbour Mexico you'll know.
maybe Chinese car maker should learn how to make a good name, no more "build your dreams" stuff and omoda sounds like a npc from witcher 3 wild hunt to me,
Should give them more slack considering most Japanese brands like Toyota, Honda, and Mazda were just someone's name in Japan (pretty common too). To the locals it's like seeing your neighbors name, though it'd be really funny if Chinese brands just started naming themselves Alex or Michael.
For Chinese people, we do not have this name, we do not even understand this word, and it is not a personal name. It was named to cater to foreign customers, and now it seems to have failed.
At 8 years the battery will last long than the car! 8 years is a pretty poor expectation for a car to last. I have an 8 year old Leaf still going strong - and it still does 70km between 80 - 20% of the battery.

Me too! 😀
Omoda is a brand of Chery. Land Rover Jaguar is reported to sign a deal to use Chery's EV platform.
I think they are already owned by Chery.
I remember the scandal years ago of Chery sending cars here with asbestos in the firewall.
Which means Volvo?
the spin is mostly due to default kumho tyres...up the tyres and handling will be much different
I'm in the UK and thinking of switching to an EV so am binge watching EV reviews and I have to say yours are the most informative and enjoyable.
Awesome, thank you! -Gav
Now we just have to wait 3 to 5 years until they find their way to the second hand market and are more affordable for the rest of us.
I don't know what the hell an Omoda is but I am looking forward to see more of em.
It’s a sub brand from Chinese car maker Cherry.
Really appreciate the humor and detail in your videos. Thanks for this one :)
I think you should give the cars a nanny score...being able to turn off nanny features permanently should result in a high nanny score....I let you work out the details.

The ICE version was pretty impressive for the price so I was eager to see how the electric version stacked up. I'd say maybe even better!

You can add £6K to that courtesy of UK Gov protectionist tariff taxation.
Also in the uk
If it had some dealer support and if it came in at £28'000 it would sell very well.

Kiwis are so lucky compared to Canadians and Americans to get such affordable and well equipped EVs.
We are very lucky in New Zealand. There is a wide range of different makes and models and one of the reasons we get them at an “affordable” price is we don’t have local vehicle manufacturing or assembly to protect with high tariffs on imports.
Time for a comparison review with atto 3 to see who reigns as the best value ev in NZ
Base model e5 would easily win against all other options.

its a multi energy platform, And they designed it with heavy dirty engine in the front - hence the wheel spin.
Gotta like seated heats,
Although the “induction heater” (7:12) fills me with fear for the safety of my internal organs… a resistive heater would be more pleasant :D

Bonus points for the full size spare wheel. Everything else, meh.
Just put a light colour cushion on your seat after you parked and throw it behind when you are driving off. Saved some butts and balls.
This car looks big, but so narrow inside. Thanks to the bulky body and the big center console between seats.
Hmm $45,000AUD...looks very tempting, hope Chery brings it here!
