This was my fave episode this season. What other shows are you planning to talk about? I just finished Silo and I hope you'll review it. It was gripping from the very first episode
I was surprised at how well Black Mirror handled a comedic theme. They took risks and I appreciate that. Silo is coming soon. I'm almost done with season 1. I'm also considering "From" as either a season review or character analysis.
Given how Black Mirror used Nine Inch Nails' music in the previous season, they missed the chance to use NIN's "Copy of a" for this episode: "I'm just a copy of a copy of a copy..."
This episode got a little too cute with the meta aspect, which started to lose me, but then brought me back by being even more meta while also incorporating more of the familiar Black Mirror existential tech. I think the show overall has become too aware of itself and it's trying to be in on a joke with the audience while also trying to break character and expectations of what is supposed to be.
Just watched all your black mirror videos. You basically see things through the same contextual framework as I do in the metaphorical and cinematic thermography sort of way. It's really cool to see someone script out and create content that nearly mirrors the way I view the depth of storytelling and film. I wish I had the dedication that you have to put thoughts to paper (so to speak). Plus your voice is perfect for narration. Earned a subscriber. I thought on this episode it would of been even more meta if they snuck in another layer deep of Cate Blanchett in the same vein complaining in the control room but I think that's too deep of a rabbit hole and too much to ask of an amazing actress. Also is the guy in the "Brian is awesome" thumbnail the dude from jury duty tv show? that would be even more meta because everyone loves that dude.
Hey, thanks! It's nice to hear from someone of the same mind. I've always been fascinated by the power of stories and how they function in society, so analyzing them from this perspective has become 2nd nature to me. Trying to understand the "how" and "why" stories are told the way that they are enriches the experience that much more. I'm glad that the algo sent you my way.

Another great recap. During the scene where they scrolled through Streamberry, one of the shows considered was *Loch Henry* ("...the Scottish murder thing?""), which Krish rejected with "I can't really do another true crime." *Loch Henry* was the following episode of Black Mirror. As an aside, that scene demonstrated further discord between the couple: even finding a show they both wanted to watch was a source of tension. Another show they considered was "Sea of Tranquility" which also showed up in *Nosedive* among others.
Thanks, Rendall. It would have been interesting if they somehow tied the Loch Henry episode in as a product of the Quamputer. Another meta easter egg, where the audience becomes a part of the universe by merely watching it.
To me, Joan is Awful is the "Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too" of season six! Your review helps to solidify my conclusion. I don't understand why people like this Salma Hayek episode but hate the Miley Cyrus episode. *it's the same "mad cap comical", "break free of the controlling media" theme* 😄Personally, I perfered the Miley Cyrus eposode to this Salma Hayek episode. Makes me wonder how happy netflix really were to be lampooned in this way... Did they really laugh at how meta it all was and were pleased to be part of the joke or do you think that some of them may have taken umbrage at basically being called hacks who pump out mindless machine made sensationalised fluff that people just gobble up...
It's been recently reported that Netflix screwed over the studio that created Squid Game. Netflix is immune to irony. They know and probably don't care because Black Mirror is a guaranteed subscription boost for their platform. A lot of these corps operate mask-off nowadays, I guess.
I'll cover all of them in this format, eventually. I only say that because I'm starting up Silo soon so, also, so it may be more than a week before I can drop another one from the new season.
Brooker said that the ideas exist in a universe of sorts, but they aren't in the same physical realities. That said, the easter eggs and various connections are interesting to account for. I plan to talk about this at some point, but I want to get a lot of the better episodes covered first, because that is a massive project to research and write.
Any theories around this episode? There’s some thought out there that this is just a grand play on a multiple personality disorder and none of the derivative Joan’s actually exist - represented by the psychologist asking if source Joan feels like herself.
Not that I'm aware of, but I haven't done any research on theories related to any of this season's episodes, yet. I may do a deep dive where I would explore characters/theories. The one you mentioned sounds interesting. I think it would also be interesting if the "quamputer" turns out to be responsible for other episodes of Black Mirror.
I know I'm in the minority but I really enjoyed this season of Black Mirror. And I'm surprised I liked Joan is Awful as much as I did because I live for the BLEAK endings!
I didn't think I would like it as much as I did, either. I wasn't sure what to expect from an episode with a strong comedic overtone, but it worked out nicely. As, for the season, so far it ranges from OK to great, but I can't say I hated any of it.
@@MrBradyR Oh the show indeed has turned crappy over time. I stopped watching it after S4. Then I checked out this new episode, and was really disappointed. If you enjoyed it, more grease to your fun. I guess it doesn't take much to entertain these days.
@@pixelart59 S6 is miles better than S4 and S5 especially, S6 is on par with S2 (S3 and S1 are the best Black Mirror seasons still). Other than Joan Is Awful, Loch Henry, Beyond the Sea, and Demon 79 were great episodes and Mazey Day is the weakest just cause it was too short to be able to explore its concept and theme.
