    My theory is that Devon is pretty much as she seems. Every show like this needs a grounded character to make the show more relatable to the audience, and her oddball choice of husband aside, Devon is more of the audience insert than even Mark or Helly.
    I could be totally wrong, but I just don't get any suspicious vibes here. We'll see!

    • @kaiateya
      @kaiateya 5 месяцев назад +11

      I agree with you. I think she's a pretty normal audience insert, the one who's not on the merry-go-round, and she'll be really important in season 2 as an anchor or lifeline for people to see how crazy their world has become.
      I think her statement about, who have you been talking to... I read that differently as someone who's had a whole family immersed in various kinds of mental illness. Many illnesses make you more susceptible to suggestion and paranoia. It could be that she sees this conspiracy he's talking about as a turn for the worse and wants to know who to give stink eye to, who's telling Mark stories. Mark's outie absolutely has mental illness going on.

      Exactly along the lines of what I was thinking. I'd be pissed if they make her character a whole plot twist secret insider kind of thing because these kinds of shows really need at least one character who's grounded, otherwise its too all over the place. It makes me think of Captain Lazerhawk, now, I love that show, but (not to be too vague-spoilers) but the constant twists and backstabs leaves you disoriented by the end, and while that works for some shows, I think its best when there's some calm stable things, like Nautilus said Constants, which is also a word that came to my mind (tho I haven't seen Inception in years lol so I didn't think of it as a reference) and Severance I think would lose the tightrope balance on those like, silent moments of realism vibes that it has if they went with too many 'out there' twists like that. Specially that would feel so the opposite of how things have been in a way that doesn't even feel led up to or anything. That's also why I (this one's more preference) don't want them to do another "is an Eagan" twist, when once was perfect with Helly. Tho, I think Ricken being secretly Severed unbeknownst to even himself could work as a cool idea.
      With this show there's so many GOOD ideas that could fit and lead to something interesting, but its such a delicate thing cause there's also stuff that could throw it way off, and idk how to explain which ones feel different and why (and I'm sure different people have different opinions/preferences anyway too) but idk yeah. I'm just so excited and nervous if they're gonna take what they're planning out in a good and believable direction.

      I think the Lumon putting weird sh*t in the water and soaps and just about everything could make sense, I never noticed the detail about the filtered water. Plus they're definitely doing *something* what with the droplet logo and the reservoir. So I think that's a great thought to keep on the backburner. It could also help explain what is up with the weird townsfolk in case none of them are Severed yet it still needs to be explained why they're so extra weird.

    • @hioeo

      Devon is obviously scarred, both by her upbringing and by Gemma's death. Mark essentially spiraled and ended in Lumen, Devon always had Ricken. He kept her grounded, and as a result she's our "outie" self insert. The character we will relate to the most, regardless of who her husband is lol

  • @idgafcba
    @idgafcba 5 месяцев назад +144

    On first glance, I get that the two are an odd pair, but it makes sense to me in that Ricken genuinely loves her. He's kind, honest and easy to predict in terms of temperament. Given the alluded "raised by an alcoholic" backstory of Mark and Devan, it would make sense she'd be drawn to someone as even keeled as Ricken, despite how pompous and extra he can be. Can't wait to get some more on her in season 2 as I think her character is intriguing, I can see why she spawns lots of theories! Great vid as always.

      I agree. In a show that features so much cynicism, Ricken, though goofy, is earnest, sincere and kind. He’s a breath of fresh air. He seems to be the least wounded among everyone, and I like that.

    Devon is one of my favorite characters. When I started the show, i wasn't expecting the outie world to play into the story nearly as much as it did, and that balance is ultimately why i loved it so much. For mark to have a friend and confidant in Devon on the outside that he doesn't have on the inside adds so much depth to hos character, and the sibling rapport they have is so great.

  • @SuburbanSlave
    @SuburbanSlave 5 месяцев назад +38

    Devon also seemed shocked by the behavior of the Angelo Arteta's wife who had been severed so that she wouldn't remember childbirth. Gabriela is absolutely cold towards Devon when they meet in the park after giving birth. If Devon were some Lumon insider, the politician's wife's behavior would not be surprising at. all. And given the danger to her baby on the part of Ms. Cobel, I bet that is a real spur for Devon to become something of a detective.
    As for Ricken, I think Devon has ignored his strangeness and his strange friends in the interest of having a happy home life. In Season 2, I guess she will look at everything around her with suspicion.

    Interesting take as always bro!
    One point i would like to add regarding Devon is the off-beat ending dialogue between her and Innie-Mark in the season finale. The way that Devon responds to her first meeting with an Innie, was always kind of weird to me. She’s not shocked or surprised to hear about their horrible situation - the imprisonment, the torture - and it seems like she’s pretty much “in the know” of something, like she knew one day Innie-Mark will show himself to her.
    You can say it’s because she and Ricken are very anti-severance -
    But I think the more interesting thought is that both Ricken and Devon are a part of some kind of a anti-Luman group, and they both know more then they let Mark see.
    Are they really “good” just because they’re “anti-Luman”? We’ll have to wait and see…

    Devon has felt like part of some underground anti-Lumon crowd operating within the town, which is what I thought she was getting at when she asked Mark who he was talking to. I'm wondering if Gemma was also in on that group and infiltrated the company; Lumon found out so that's how she ended up permanent innie mind wiped.

    Thanks a lot for all your theories, tinfoil sits tight! One more theory to add to the pile, haven't heard this point being covered in the videos: to me the episode with Milchek awakening Dylan on the outside seems very off. He goes through too much of a risk to retrieve a card that: 1. we have seen is mass-produced by O&D
    2. Doesn't contain any or enough information for the outie to be alarmed if he finds it
    So knowing how skilled Milchek is I doubt he couldn't deal with hiding Dylan's son from him for 5 minutes. Or he could have awakened him somewhere else. This leads me to thinking that Milchek wanted for Dylan to see his son and check his reaction. Dylan was never questioning his existence at Lumen, same as Irving, but they both have been shown a person to love that made them turn on lumon. I think Irving meeting Burt was orchestrated by Lumon, same as Dylan meeting his son - so each character now has a reason to rebel. I'm thinking that MDR was the only people that are actually closely watched by Lumon to see if they can bypass the loyalty and start questioning their existence (potentially by one of the emotions being triggered?). So the whole experiment is about putting them into situations and seeing how they would respond and if they would rebel against the company once they have experienced emotions. Otherwise Milchek acting so carelessly for such a small thing makes no sense.

    “Who have you been talking to?” Makes sense because Mark went from being adamant that he didn’t want to unsever and didn’t care what they were doing even if bad (and it was a touchy subject to bring up) to discussing how they are up to something and happy to ridicule them. It’s clear something has caused a dramatic shift but he was in such denial she doesn’t assume it’s his own kind of instant growth out of the lonely, grief stricken, stubbornness but instead some new information.

    Friend, I do enjoy your theories and the time to put on the run foil hat is my favorite when a new video drops!
    Today a trailer was released to announce season 2 in January… gives us a few more months to theorize 🙌
    Devin is such an interesting character because she seems the most normal of all but when paying attention you realize there’s a few things that we don’t know about her.
    I want to suggest you another show, dark and from the UK but that touches on time recurrence (or time travel for the layman) in such a smart way.
    One season is out now and 2 more are planned to make it a trilogy - the first season finale explains a lot and yet there are SO many elements that aren’t revealed yet. Rarely do I find shows like this, of the caliber of Severance in another genre.
    The Devil’s Hour it is called and I would love your take and brain juice melting trying to solve that one 😂 like I said, we learned a lot in the first season 6 episodes but clearly there’s a lot more that we can only try to speculate on.
    Much love and keep up the good work, I’m having a blast watching those videos!

    I would think a good spy agency compartmentalizes very well. Devon could be a plant without knowledge of Cobel being a plant/lone actor here. Also, Devon could honestly be there more for the child's benefit than anything. If she is a plant, her whole goal could be to foster another Eagen for the family line, marrying Ricken as a stock horse.

  • @arnellivy2143
    @arnellivy2143 10 дней назад

    Devon and Ricken’s relationship makes a lot of sense to me given that Devon had a rough upbringing. She was probably looking for someone very different than her father. And Ricken may have been attracted to her (if he is real), because his family was so flighty and judgmental, he wanted someone grounded and kind. A lot of times opposites attract because they meet an internal need and fill an emotional void for one another. But I do think Ricken is an Eagan though.

    Wait ... how do we know that any of these people weren't actually grown as livestock? Maybe Helly was right when she first woke up. Is Lumon a decent place to work? They would totally raise human goats to test. The whole experience in the goat room, I think the guy was saying, "They aren't ready yet". What if the whole severance project is to not only grow model workers, but it is to also grow model citizens for Lumon.

  • @TwixiMixiPixi
    @TwixiMixiPixi 5 месяцев назад +1

    I think that the idea that Devon's water filter filter's out something that Lumon put in there is very plausible, compared to the other theories. The theory that they put something in the water makes a lot of sense, given how strange the rest of the people living in Kier are, and since Devon drinks filtered water she wouldn't be affected by it. I assume that whatever Lumon puts in the water would have other purposes and giving people reduced intelligence/common sense could be a side affect, but using that we can see the correlation between the filtered water and someone acting normally. I think that Devon doesn't know about whatever is in the water, and she just happens to drink filtered water. This doesn't mean that it isn't intentional, though. I've read some other comments here suggesting that Lumon's plants could be very compartmentalized, and that they would know nothing about each other. It's possible they may not even know they are plants at all. If Devon is a plant in a situation like this, Lumon could've somehow influenced her into filtering her water (eg. a "doctor" telling her she needs to drink filtered water, a "friend" telling her about the dangers of unfiltered water, etc.).

  • @madiiiskyblu

    I think that there’s a chance Devon could actually not want to help mark after what happened to her baby. Even though the baby was fine in the end she was clearly terrified and may decide she doesn’t want to endanger her baby further. Or on the flip side could go all in because she wants revenge. I could see either but the first would make Devon and Ricken seem more like a match tbh.

    RE: "Who are you talking to?" I read it slightly differently- She wanted Mark to go to therapy right? to talk to a therapist? but she also knows Mark well enough to know that he would never just switch gears like that on his own. She perhaps recognises some quality in him that has been missing since Gemma's "death", so something must have changed. A new friend? a romance?. I think either of these, the therapist or a new connection in Marks life, is what Devon is referring to when she asks that question. More interesting is the answer- who does deserve credit for Marks widening perspective? Pete could definitely be one. But then, could Mark S' feelings for Helly might also play a subconscious part in this sudden motivation?

    I really hope that just Devon and Ricken are just a “opposites attract” to the highest figure couple. I really like them as being a steady ground for Marks life and just genuinely mean well for him and want him to be happy. Also Ricken is goofy but like I get it. He’s super sweet, he’s a good listener, a good dad, puts others first. Idk it makes sense to me why Devon is with him, she probably loves how head in the clouds he is. I also don’t think Devon is evil or has bad intentions. I think her asking him who he’s been talking to is just like. Idk just out of nowhere he’s against his company when for two years he wasn’t and she’s just curious and maybe more concerned cause she probably knows it’s not common for emplpyees to speak out. Like she’s wondering what he got involved in or what changed his mind. Especially after he said idk he said he saw a disheveled man in her front yard

    It doesn't really make sense to me that Mark became Severed to cope with Gemma's death. For most people, work provides at least some kind of a distraction from the grief. I think the "who have you been talking to" question actually isn't that weird at all. Given that outie Mark has no knowledge of what's going on on the inside, it would only make sense that he's been talking to someone to get to this conclusion since he has no information. The only suspicious things he could catch onto would be his injuries, but even then I don't think there'd be much reason to assume a grander evil scheme just from that.

    The two Devon sus theories: "who have you been talking to" ? I think she's questioning Mark's paranoia or conspiracy theories. Remember she's the rational one in the series. Two: she drinks filtered water. Lots of reasons to drink filtered water. She's PREGNANT and nursing. Or it's a contrast to Mark's alcoholism or it's filtered water is more accessible to middle/upper class people or she just likes the taste. It's a red herring? 🐙

    Hello, everyone; I hope you all are well. I have one possible idea for the MDR work. What if the refiners were refining goats' fluids to find molecules corresponding to the four temperaments? To explain further, according to Hippocrates' theory of bodily fluids, temperaments originate from changes in bodily fluids-blood, yellow bile, black bile, and phlegm. What if Lumon Industries wanted to identify and separate specific molecules (and they could use the goats for this purpose) to use these molecules to induce specific behaviors in people? For example, by injecting these molecules into water or their products, they can manipulate people. The refiner’s job would be to separate the molecules from the total mass and store them in bins. These molecules could be used to induce certain behaviors in whoever Lumon wants (e.g., making someone more violent or more depressed). In this way, MDR would be refining not the leftover data but the raw material that goes into the bins. Their chips and personal capabilities could be unique to perform this specific task. Each file can be a particular goat… so, what do you think?

    • @albX00
      @albX00 3 месяца назад

      One additional factor: The MDR job might be time-sensitive because, after killing the goats to extract the fluids, there is a limited window of time before it decays completely... imagine they use goats instead of actual human beings, what would be even more creepy...

    8:08 i’d like to counter your “if they were on the same team wouldn’t they know” with one if they’re both employed by different departments of lumon with similar assignments why would they overlap when lumons so set on secrecy and the lack of overlapping
    we know harmony isn’t really *that* high up on the ladder despite seemingly being up to some degree on it and we know from her “meetings” it’s usually a one way door between her supervisors communication and that she has restricted knowledge about what’s happening in lumon so why wouldn’t that also be the case for devon if they shared a same supervisor
    i can also see devon is so against severance because she knows more than most of us know about severance and has known for some time and is protective of her brother
    just to clarify im not sure i buy devon being a double agent i think she’s a placeholder for the viewers perspective (i think she might know reghabi (i have zero backing evidence for this it’s just a hunch and i’m not sure how much she’d know bc of her if she does)) more than anything but anyways thanks for another video and i enjoyed playing devils advocate here

    Okay so I'm watching it again for like the 5th time and I'm just gonna put my thoughts here :P
    Idk if anyone's thought of it but I wonder if any of the townspeople, since it was theorized they might be Severed too, are like, Lumon rejects? Kinda? So now that we know Helly is an Eagan, it makes sense why she isn't allowed to leave even if she gets aggresive. But what if an average regular person really could leave after harassing them enough times? So maybe they were townspeople who were too much of a handful and left? I guess you'd have to bridge that with them being unknowingly wiped of their outer Lumon memories too though.
    Well I'm probably overthinking singular lines again (then again I started to think I was overthinking the "ask to leave three times" line and then I hear "what about your therapist that weird little guy with a mustache" -potentially Irving- and I'm like OMG NEVERMIND, THINK EVERYTHING.) anyway so yeah that one prob doesn't make sense but I thought I'd note it somewhere :^).

    People being suspicious about Devon drinking filtered water is WILD AS FUCK TO ME. It is incredibly common. We drink filtered water in my household. Some people don’t like the taste that the minerals in their local water have so they filter it. Some cities don’t have trustworthy tap water because US infrastructure is a fucking nightmare so they filter it. I am so shook to find out that people find that weird/suspicious, it is normal to me and everyone I know, even those from other states and cities lmao.

      I'm in a city with relatively good water and I still _prefer_ filtered water. Some places the chlorination is more noticable and I would be even more stringent about it.
      Plus, I'm pretty sure that Ricken would have insisted for the pregnancy, even if that wasn't her preference.

    What if the Outties are ALREADY severed and have moved to Keir to start new, severed lives, with no memories of their old lives or chosing to be severed? And what if Lumon testing is DOUBLE or 'layering' Severance? In other words, severing already severed people.
    Based On -
    1. No real background or character explanation of People outside of Lumon (Mark, his sister, Ricken, their friends, Petey's family, other non-innies etc). Is this Because they all went there to be severed from their actual lives (base reality) and their memories of their real lives was wiped? How did they all end up living in a Lumon town? How & where did they all meet or grow up at? How do we know if the Outties memories (and all of those who live in Keir) are even real? All of their memories of lives together (ie Mark and Jemma's entire relationship, Mark and his sisters relationship) could just be memory implants they received when they chose to be severed and move to Keir, so that they could be matched up in a life with other severed Keir residents. Also, Marks sister Devon, is different from everyone else in the Outties World, she seems normal, conscious, aware, grown up and sort of worn out, really trying to exercise patience. Perhaps she is like Mrs. Cobel; severed but aware and in place as a watcher.
    2. A majority of people u see outside of Lumon, specifically Rickens friends, are very strange and childlike, the same as Innies. This would make sense in this theory.

    ok, lets go full wacky theory. Lumen is actually trying to save everyone and they are the good guys. the whole severance work thing is a cover, and the chips lock out the tempers. that is the testing they are doing, making sure the four tempers dont melt through into the true self.
    when Helly bumps into her dad he actually knows its helly and sees the pain she is in. when he says "look what she did to you" hes talking about how Helena [riddled with the tempers] has hurt helly

    Crazy theory: Devon participated in the orchestration of Gemma getting taken in by lumon. Maybe she felt that Gemma was wrong for mark because they all spent a lot of time together (maybe she enabled his drinking?) and she wanted to do what she thought was right by helping to get him into a severed job. That might be too tinfoily and I don’t have much to support it but I think the only way she might be involved in the conspiracy would be to support marks best interest. She may not even know much about it all in this scenario but maybe she just wanted Gemma gone. CALL ME BANANAS I know it’s a little out there

    What if she knew Ricken before he was severed? From the first time we met Ricken, until we knew more- I originally thought Devon was there because Mark was there… but what if not only were they either there together/ but Ricken was severed after Devon and he were married? What if Devon pretends to not know and that’s why she’s subtly pushing Mark to not be? Also, were Mark and Devon the product of a man who grew up in Kier?
