    What I find most unnerving about Milchick is that he might NOT be a “true believer.” He could be a fully committed company man, always giving 100% to protect the best interest of Lumon, without believing whatsoever that Lumon is accomplishing anything worth doing. It’s just his job, so he does it. That’s an unnervingly familiar type of person.

    Love your Severance videos! FWIW the editor who kills the Topeka Star story in the Lexington Letter is named Jim MIlchick, and he seems to kill it in a very characteristic Milchick way. The story I made up in my head is that Seth Milchick comes from a very devoted Lumon family.

      So what if he met anybody his outie knows? Is he just informed enough to brush it off?

  • @derekhiemforth
    @derekhiemforth 6 месяцев назад +9

    I almost see Cobel and Milchick as mirror images of each other or flip sides of the same coin, in a way. Cobel is not charming or likeable, but it sometimes seems like she could be at least a little bit sympathetic (or at least pitiable). Milchick, by contrast, can definitely be charming and likeable (even if his energy is a little off-kilter), but I don't think he's ever sympathetic, even though what he's done is not quite as overtly antagonistic to the innies as what Cobel has done.
    I guess what I'm trying to say is that it seems like Cobel might be on board with Lumon because she's damaged or brainwashed, while Milchick seems like he's a company man who has genuinely bought in (which is much more disturbing, IMO).

    • @nautilusfiles
      @nautilusfiles  6 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah, unlike Cobel, Milchick's intention are purely in the interest of Lumon. His work demeanor is a mask he puts on as part of the job, which makes it hard to determine when his actions are genuinely his own.

    There's a theory that innies who get far enough up the corporate chain get rewarded by not being switched off and effectively taking over their outie's lives - this is why Cobel is so strange outside as she is functionally a child with regards to lived experience (though this doesn't explain the shrine, or why she was allowed to just leave after being fired). Milchick is another true beliver who is now his newer self all the time.

    Of course I enjoyed the video. When this popped up and I saw it was new, I grabbed the headset and pressed play. Milchick is probably my favorite character, because he's so enigmatic and well-acted. That comparison between him and Cobel can probably be stretched to a whole different video. He portrays that idealist doing what he feels must because he believes so strongly in the higher cause very well. I've seen similar awkward smiles in business executives talking out of both sides of their mouths as they tell the work force how valuable they are even while planning massive layoffs behind the scenes. It's a kind of aloofness that is hard to pin down.

    I used to be robotic, cold and cruel like Milchik. In real life. It was a result of a long period of trauma so I can provide some psychological analysis from my own personal experience as someone who was like that.
    For me, it developed as a defense mechanism - I couldn't deal with my emotions, so I shut them down. Due to not receiving empathy and help with dealing with the negative emotions I felt (I wasn't emotionless 100% of the time, that's impossible), i both didn't care, and when there was something that made me feel bad, if I thought i could reject, I would be cruel, e.g say toxic things that hurt others. I was usually in a position of powerlessness so I didn't do that. But to those who didn't hurt me I didn't do anything.
    There's much more to what I went through and how it affected me but that's what's relevant here IMO.
    So Milchik displayed this kind of emotional reactions and behavior. With him, I suspect he was brainwashed. In my case, I was trying to resist aggression and abuse, mostly. Brainwashing is also a form of trauma, but if done slowly and weakly enough, the change will become gradual and there won't be much resistance - like a frog in a pot that doesn't jump out, realizing it's being cooked, because the temperature of the water is slowly and gradually increased.
    I suspect that's what happened to him. So he has that belief engraved in him by the brainwashing Lumen did, which i hypotheisze is from an early age, similarly to Cobell's mom, supposedly.
    I, at some point, broke. I couldn't be emotionless and not needing of empathy. It was when someone made me feel cared about. I suspect that a similar thing will happen to Milchik, when he'll have no choice but to face the lack of choice he had. He could react in various ways - become depressed, angry, vengeful, self-harming and more.
    From a character writing perspective, I think he'll just become depressed to get out of the way, because, I assume, he wouldn't be written to have something "personal" in the form of a relationship and external love, since we already have that in the form of Cobell. Like his actor said, he's a gatekeeper. So once the gate opens, which it has been, then you need to stop the guard from preventing you to get through. Cobell tried to do that, and same for Milchik himself, but since he has motivation to keep it closed - and tried to - I think the best way to get him to stop trying to stop the gang is to get him to become depressed.
    I don't think he'd join them, because then he'd have to overcome what he went through, and a literary definition I saw for heroes are those who overcome their difficulties and shortcomings in stories. If he were to do that, he'd be a hero, but we already have those - the gang.
    So I think he was written to play this role from preventing them to go through the gate, as a difficulty in their way to overcome.
    I'd be surprised if he were to join them. Most I can see him potentially do is give them information but I highly doubt it - he'd feel to defeated at this point, and we'd have as a contrasting highlight the resolve of the main characters we've already seen.

      You say you were emotionless. You weren't. You have a good analysis on what you did. How it affected you and your regret from it. Thank you for sharing your story. I wish that never happened to you. I hate you had no one to protect or stand for you when you needed it most. Happens more than you know. It's acceptable to help people suffer in society. People are sick.

      Thank you, that means a lot. It's interesting trying to cover dark subjects with a lighthearted spin, so I'm glad to hear that. Silo is a good show that builds slowly but is worth the ride by the end. It's not as tightly written as Severance, but I think you might like it almost as much.

    The impression I get is that to be severed implies that there’s a person to go back to. So, maybe Tramell is right in that Milchick isn’t severed- he’s fully programmed as whatever Lumen needs him to be?

    • @nautilusfiles

    Idk about severed, but I always thought the way he reacted to getting attacked and bitten felt childish, like his pout, shock, almost betrayal and an "I'll tell on you!" knowing full well he wouldn't (or maybe he did? it doesn't seem like Dylan got any consequences for it but maybe he did).

  • @kalebgonzales4009
    @kalebgonzales4009 Месяц назад

    For me, the peak catalyst of this show driving the plot really forward was not the red book ( red book was just the foreshadow/ precursor/ a quasi chekov’s gun) but milchick’s bad decision to activate the innies outside. He could have confronted Dylan the next day. And that’s why mildchick was perfect in my opinion. He was a devoted and focused side villian?- gray character who still made flaws despite the vibrant demeanor.

  • @dirtyfrank6162
