StarTropics doesn't deserve to be forgotten. With Nintendo bringing back series like Punch-Out!, Kid Icarus, Advance Wars, and Famicom Detective Club, StarTropics NEEDS to be the next in line!
Highly underrated game! Absolutely loved this one back when, but was always stuck at the last Zoda. Showed him who’s boss a few weeks back, did it in memory of my cousin who passed this year. We used to go to town on this game, starting fresh each time and challenging each other with weird level goals. I absolutely adore the OST. Outside of the obvious first party choices, this is my favorite soundtrack on the NES.
24:27 Cleopatra looking very European is somewhat historically accurate. The ruling family of Egypt in that time were not native, but descended from Ptolemy, one of Alexander the Great's generals, making her Macedonian Greek and not Egyptian. Unlike the rest of her family, Cleopatra _actually bothered to learn Egyptian_ and could speak to her subjects, so she was extra popular with her people. Regardless, a suntan was the sign of a common laborer in both Greek and Egyptian society, and women in particular avoided getting one, lest they risk looking like that had to leave home to work. Cleopatra, as a noble, would have definitely made sure her skin was as pale as possible.
@staghornthedruid957 yes they are, but let's not forget modern Mediterranean people are quite the mixed lot, so that's not exactly the best control sample. Pure-bred ancient Greeks are said to have been mostly white, with the commoners having a more tanned tone, for the reasons already mentioned here.
Cleopatra in this game is meant to look like Elizabeth Taylor, as Sherlock Holmes is designed to look like Basil Rathbone. Many people do not know that Cleopatra was actually Greek!
Also, Cleopatra was royalty, so she probably wouldn't spend a lot of time in the sun. In Ye Olden Times being ghostly white was considered attractive, since it meant that you're rich and didn't have to work outdoors.
Cleopatra was the last ruler in the Ptolemaic Kingdom in Egyptian history. It was brought about by Ptolemy I Soter, who hung around with Alexander the Great. So it makes sense that she would have lighter skin, though it could have been a touch darker, simply because of the geography. She was not, however, black. Despite what a certain "documentary" stated. A "documentary" that had a lawsuit filed against it, but I don't think that lawsuit really went anywhere.
Man its crazy how under the radar this game was... Ive recommended it to several people who seemed to all have the same "how have i never heard of this game" response
It came out so incredibly late in the console's life that basically there's like zero nostalgia attached to it. By 94 probably 97 percent of console gamers were onto 16 bit and even more.
I remember finding this game in KB toy store, around the year 2000, mixed in with random SNES and Genesis sports games that they had dug out of boxes in storage when they moved locations, within the mall. They also had a copy original Star Tropics. That was the first time I even knew Star Tropics had a sequel. Me and my friends couldnt get over the fact that an NES game was being sold as new, that long after the fact. I was in highscool and still played my NES only slightly less than my PSone.
Thank you for everything you do! Yer videos have reignited my love for the retro games of my childhood and I can’t wait to sit down and play this game once I finish the video!
If you say "No" to the old caveman he'll say something about Mike actually being right-handed and a starting pitcher. I think you're actually _supposed_ to say "No" when he asks if you're the "southpaw reliever" but most RPGs have trained us to always say "Yes" to things like that...
I'm commenting just 3 minutes in because I love this game, and played through it more times then the original. The final two levels of the original Startropics always felt more epic to me, but the sequel was more interesting in general. I love that you've made this game part of your series. Thank you.
Another great video YCBVG! I was fortunate as a kid to have both Startropics games and dipping the letter that came with the original in water as a 9 year old and figuring that out myself was something I'll remember for the rest of my life.
If traditional videogame magazine's walkthrough article get turn into video format, this channel would be the prime example of how it would be like. Your videos actually gave me the nostalgia feeling of spending hours reading every words and looking at screen caps plastered on each page of my favorite magazines. Thank you
Nice video! I'm a little embarrassed to admit this, but I only just noticed the little 8-bit Kylo in all your thumbnails. That's a nice touch. ... How dare you call me slow!
Great game! I usually have trouble with Zoda Y, but your strategy will make it much easier for me! As for a third game, I always thought they'd finally take it to the stars. In my mind, several years after the last game Mike and Miss Carol did get together and the aliens came back and abducted everyone from C-island except for Mike and his uncle who were stateside at the time (new alien leader wanting revenge for Zoda's final defeat in the last game). They return to C-island after Mike couldn't contact his girlfriend to find everyone gone. Dr. J then reveals the spaceship he was working on based on the remains of the wrecked ship from the first game and has Navcom re-programmed and ready to pilot it (gotta bring that robot back). Then Mike travels to outer space and each chapter as logged in the ship's log is a new planet/solar system he visits to try and find his girlfriend and the rest of the folks from C-island. They would meet up with various alien races (complete with references to other franchises and/or places that Star Tropics is known for and/or funny scenes where Mike tries to explain humans to them) including the ones he rescued along from the previous games and they help Mike by upgrading his ship with new abilities (kind of like how the sub in the first game got new abilities, but more in-depth and we could have some light space combat added to the game). As Mike rescues all the people from C-island they'd join him on the ship, and at the end they'd all be back on C-island with Mike being able to go around and talk to everyone optionally before talking to Carol one last time where they decide to go to the victory party together as a couple. This would've been a much bigger game on the SNES with tons of new places and things to do. Mike's new throwing weapons would've been some high tech "space balls" (yes, pun of the movie, but it's Star Tropics, we expect that), and with all the new alien tech he'd come across, he'd gain some unique new abilities too with some new consumable items (night vision for the dark rooms, hover shoes for temp walking over damage tiles, etc.).
Wow... you actually did Zoda's Revenge, it took me a while to get the game and now I can play it (on my NES, I already had it on my Wii thanks to the virtual console magic... that unless you do shenanigans on the console is impossible to get nowdays), your guide will help me a lot to beat the game.
I watch for the in-depth details about the games you dive into. I stick around for the great commentary! You can make a whole additional video pointing out all the little easter-egg quips you make! "I feel like I'm ready to take on Apollo Creed!" Love it! Keep up the great work and thanks for putting these out there for us to watch!
As someone who only played the first Star Tropics thanks to his cousin. Thanks for doing this video to see how the series ended. It was pretty well done and you see the completed story between the two games.
Bro, this series is awesome. You got the formula right. Its gotta be the perfect amount of dog. Nice work man. I'll watch anything you do. Every NES game, let's go.
I didn’t get to play a ton of games as a kid, but this was one of my favorites! I used to walk barefoot down to the video store and rent it all the time. I loved it. I had no idea what was going on because I’ve never played the first one, but the cover art just drew me in.
Thanks for your walkthrough! This is one of my childhood favourites and I have probably played it through 10 or more times. My grandmother introduced me to StarTropics and I had played her copy of Zoda's Revenge before. I still remember going to KayBee Toys when I was on vacation to get this. It was one of only 3 NES games they had available. They were not on display and I had to ask the salesclerk for it specifically. I remember getting stuck on the brain in Ch. 4, then the boss of Ch. 7. I never understood in the Cactus Dance the going 'right' means from Mike's perspective instead of the top-down player perspective, so I always used trial-and-error to find the mine. Had a blast watching this, thanks again!
I really enjoy these videos. Thank you for all the effort to make game completion accessible and interesting. I am sharing with friends who love vintages classics as much as I do.
I really love this youtube channel. You make videos for games i enjoyed as a kid, but couldn't beat. Games i never heard of and would have enjoyed. Last but not least games that i always wanted to play, but never had the money
Not gonna lie, I fell asleep watching this 20 minutes in yesterday (long day at work) and only woke up after the video stopped XD Now I have to finish watching the whole darn thing.
I never knew there was a star tropics 2. Even if you play a game I've never played or heard of I love watching your videos. You have such great narration and you are very detailed in your explanations.
This was so much better than the first. The controls were so much better. I used to play through rpgs during my summer breaks in elementary and junior high.
Played a little bit of Star Tropics 1 when rented from a video game store during the summer. Did not have a chance to play the 2nd game. Underrated game that seems really fun.
Thanks for doing this one. I remember playing this as a kid (I remember all these old games), but it's always so cool to see old strategies and secrets I never knew at the time. And the history lessons are always really neat too.
This game had some awesome music too, I'd been playing all this time too not knowing you could get the dagger early in Egypt. Favorite stage was always old London for Sherlock.
When I was a kid I found a trick to max out your hearts at 20 early. If you speak to King Arthur again, you will get the same dialog and he will knight you again, increasing your maximum hearts by 1 again. This can be repeated a 3rd time to max out at 20.
Great video. I am so glad I still played NES games during the SNES era. Otherwise, I might've missed this gem. It's too bad so many other people missed out on it. And I agree that we DO need a Startropics 3. Mike needs to be remembered.
Having played Zoda's Revenge LONG before the original, I'd say the story worked perfectly well. Heck, Zoda and the alien children literally don't show up until the VERY end of the first game, so it practically didn't spoil anything for actually 'playing' the first game.
Thanks so much for doing this! I have a love-hate relationship with this game. I beat it as a kid, but for the life of me I can't recall much about it, so this is a nostalgia trip of revivified memories.
SNES walkthroughs would be pretty cool, but with how long a lot of those games are, the frequency of video releases would probably slow to a crawl. Especially with all the secrets and alternative methods of doing stuff that usually gets shown.
I streamed through this game a while back, and maaan did it frustrate me. But the parts that weren't loaded with BS difficulty were really fun, and the sense of humor was amusing. Overall I liked it a bunch. In retrospect, anyway. And I even think I found a glitch on my own!
True - I do like Windwaker. If they took the StarTropics style and built a game with the large ocean of Windwaker, that would be perfect! Of course, ill be happy if they make any StarTropics 3 at this point.
I got this game when it came out since we didnt have an SNES. It was so amazing and I hadnt played the first one. I later found it at a garage sale and was very pleased. I picked this up the same day as Megaman 6. Also got the top load NES so we didnt have to share our front loader. What a great day
Its cool that Nintendo cared enough to put these late generation games out for the people that didn't have a 16 bit system yet. Capcom wasn't going to release Mega Man 6, so Nintendo published it themselves.
Very nice video once again. I actually did beat this one for the first time a couple of years ago. Really is a shame this series died out after this game, but both of these games are true NES gems.
24:22 Well, to be fair, Cleopatra's dynasty (the Ptolemys) is actually Greek, so maybe she has that for why she's a bit lighter-skinned. Although one would think she could be more tanned.
One correction about the Try Your Luck sign: In Zoda's Revenge, they can no longer take away lives. They only have +1 and +2 as possible outcomes, making it possible to get to 9 lives on certain dungeons.
I have been researching NES games and though I know a good bit of them. This one and quite a few other's are so unique and look very interesting. I don't remember these games from back then and they weren't marketed like Mario, Zelda, Dragon Warrior etc.. I love the simplicity of the NES era and the unique games and risk that developers took. It was new technology back then so a lot of what they did was probably trial and error and just seeing what worked.
I picked up the SNES as soon as I could, so I missed out on this game when it came out in 1994. Seeing your video on it was great though! Maybe someday Nintendo will see fit to give us a third game, or at least make reference to this series in Smash.
Same. Remember back then we'd trade in our old consoles for the new ones because who would ever go back to playing old games, am I right?? Haha we were fools
That's because the game accidentally uses the katana's projectile graphics for this room instead of the dagger's. If the room had any enemies it would still have the same attack power as the dagger.
Man, I have been waiting for this one since the OG video. As always, you do not disappoint. :D So... now that we're here at last, I can say my peace about good ol' Zoda's Revenge. I think for the most part, it's a solid game. My main issue is that cop out, HORSECRAP ending. Didn't Mica EXPLICITLY mention that Argonia was, y'know... GONE?? As in, destroyed beyond any attempt at salvation? Why would Hirocon returning change that? UGH. What a terrible ending. That said, as I mentioned, I think the game itself is a fine successor to Startropics. The eight directional movement is an interesting mechanic that I wish a Startropics 3 would have come out to expand on further by making platforming that REQUIRES you to jump diagonally. Because unless I'm mistaken, there's no REQUIRED diagonal jumping in 2. There are some goofy moments with historical figures, but there were goofy moments in the first game. I mean, for god's sake Mike shoves BANANAS in his ears to block out Zoda's voice. This series is ALL about goofy moments and addictive gameplay. I'd steal your ST3 idea if I had the slightest bit of programming knowledge, HA. I know a user on Deviantart by the name of Diegichigo who actually made some sprites for Mica as a potential playable character for Startropics 3 and I'm all on board with that idea as well.
StarTropics doesn't deserve to be forgotten. With Nintendo bringing back series like Punch-Out!, Kid Icarus, Advance Wars, and Famicom Detective Club, StarTropics NEEDS to be the next in line!
One of my all time favourites. I remember dunking the letter under water to get the 747 code
Keep waiting for Mike in Smash Bros myself.
I would give up both of my balls to see another StarTropics.
This and F-ZERO needs to return
Have I already beaten this game multiple times already? Yes.
Am I going to watch this whole video playthrough? YES!
am i going to watch it multiple times?yes

"What if I told you...."
It makes me smile everytime I hear you say it, man! Keep up the great videos!

The Ptolemaic King's even. A long line of his family ruled Egypt as Pharaoh for centuries after the death of Alexander and ended with Cleopatra.
Greeks are Mediterranean though
@staghornthedruid957 yes they are, but let's not forget modern Mediterranean people are quite the mixed lot, so that's not exactly the best control sample. There was nothing more satisfying than the victory music at the end of each level. Wow! you´ve done it! is my favorite line of all times...
These games are super underrated, I have wanted Startropics 3 for a long, long time.
Bravo! Such an underrated game that was released a little too late, since the NES was on its way out at the time. Definitely one of my favorites.
Little Nero's Pizza is from Home Alone. "Caesar's Hut" is a combination reference of Little Caesar's and Pizza Hut.

For all the game’s focus on Mike being a southpaw, you’d figure they could at least make his throwing animation left handed
If you say "No" to the old caveman he'll say something about Mike actually being right-handed and a starting pitcher.

The diagonal movement mechanics were GREAT!!!!
I love that you do NES games, ever thought about doing SNES. Like a ff 6 or earthbound. 12 hour vids!!!
I'd love a massive 12 hour SNES rpg from this guy .
@Mystic maybe do it in two parts. I mean there other snes games he could fly through. I would never be upset to see him do Super Metroid.
Agreed for sure! He did do an early video of Super Star Wars for the SNES but from what I can tell it’s the only one
Robotech, only rented it a few times but I remember it being a fun quirky ealry snes rpg. I think it was called Robotech it was a enix game.

this is my go to answer for the common question of "most underrated NES game". star tropics 2 has it all.
Very nice video once again. I actually did beat this one for the first time a couple of years ago. Really is a shame this series died out after this game, but both of these games are true NES gems.
I've been meaning to replay this title.
its a good one! BTW, I watch your channel all the time, big fan!
24:22 Well, to be fair, Cleopatra's dynasty (the Ptolemys) is actually Greek, so maybe she has that for why she's a bit lighter-skinned. Although one would think she could be more tanned.
Thanks for posting this. It's so hard. I've tried beating it so many times but I've never been able to get far
definitely one of my all time favorite video games
This is a game i always wish i had played…glad to see the video on it! Keep em coming
StarTropics is one of my favorite NES games. I didn't even know a sequel existed.
As always love your videos still waiting on that Guardian Legend walkthrough
One correction about the Try Your Luck sign:
In Zoda's Revenge, they can no longer take away lives. They only have +1 and +2 as possible outcomes, making it possible to get to 9 lives on certain dungeons.
I like the intros when your puppy dog brings you the game to play! Lol
The haunted mansion was my favorite dungeon in the game. It was just really cool to me. Boss was kind of a bummer though.
Star Tropics 2 is so much easier than the first game. That last stage in 1 is _brutal._
Little Nero's, I believe, is the pizza place from the Home Alone movie.
Little Caesar's mashed up w/ Pizza Hut, but I think you're correct as well
@@James-kc4ft I'm sure that's what Caesar Hut in this game is a reference to. I was just mentioning where I think he got Little Nero's from.
There's one particular part of this game where I went *Whelp I guess I need some kinda guide*
Glad to see this headache averted with your guide!
Outstanding! Thanks for putting the effort and time into making these.
I push that like button like that dog pushes the NES controller button!
I love your endorsement of the game at the beginning.
One of the best NES games. Great videos!
1:10:07 - Neat glitch. If you throw your dagger in this room it will be the Katana.
That's because the game accidentally uses the katana's projectile graphics for this room instead of the dagger's.
If the room had any enemies it would still have the same attack power as the dagger.
You are correct....there are some copies of the game with little neros pizza...later copies were altered for copyright infringement
Best gaming channel on RUclips
Literally the last Nintendo game to ever come out. I remember this, I remember this
I enjoy your channel each week, thank you!
I appreciate your work cause I will not be able to play some of the games you play so I get yo relive my past through you
Dude u da man...love your taste in games and always impressed by ur skills
It's been sitting sealed on my shelf for 25 years...time to open up.
Man, I have been waiting for this one since the OG video. As always, you do not disappoint. :D
So... now that we're here at last, I can say my peace about good ol' Zoda's Revenge.
A nice enjoyable video to get through my morning. Good job
Well done! You make awesome videos and your game skills are way above mine! Stay frosty!
33:08 - this can’t take lives away. You’re thinking of startropics 1
The dog is the best gamer.
