I took the full frame Panasonic Lumix S5 for a test drive. I dig the camera but I dig what it becomes with the Atomos Ninja V even more. See why the Panasonic S5 could easily be your next cinema camera.
P.S. - there is grain added to the opening shots. RUclips tends to do weird things with grain but I liked it and left it anyway :-)

How did you get that beautiful grain at the start of the video with RUclips compression? Thank you spencer
I want to know that too
I used the grain FX in Davinci Resolve. I used larger grain to help trick yotuube the best I could.
@@spensersakurai I thought so. Many thanks Spenser. Appreciate your work :)
@@spensersakurai Am I missing something, don't we pay top all this money to get great dynamic range and low noise, why add it back in in post? Thanks for the great content by the way, I always learn something from your videos :-)
@@colhutchins digital noise isn’t the same as simulated film grain. Digital noise, which often shows up heavily in chroma, adds unwanted and varied color random color data that isn’t very pleasing. Film grain tends to come across monochromatic as a luma-only addition. Aside from that, the idea is that you get a clean, low noise, high DR image so that you can do whatever you want to it. If you want it clean, it’s clean. If you want to dirty it up later, you can. If you want to create an HDR image, you have the dynamic range for it; but if you want to clamp it down to something smaller, you can. It’s about ✨options✨
I don't think people realise how god damn beautiful the 10bit 422 full V-Log footage looks straight out of this camera. I switched to the S5 coming from GH5 and I'm totally blown away. For less than 2k it's just insane.
I’m hesitant on upgrading because I have a lot of lenses for the gh5 and I feel if I upgraded I’d sort of be starting over with my kit and I have feeling that the gh6 may be something between s1h and the s5. Have you found yourself missing the gh5 at all?
@@rubiotv not really. It's been a huge upgrade for me and I don't regret selling my m43 system.
@@DavidHorizonFilms thanks for responding. 🤔 did you ended up getting any other lenses on top of the kit lens?
@@rubiotv I didn't get the kit lens. Went straight with the body and sigma 24-70
@@DavidHorizonFilms I love the GH5s as a Bcam. I can combine all the advantages of m43 with juicy full frame. Win win!
Every time you do a camera review, I forget about the camera and just realize again how good you are at lighting.
This is true.
One of the best lighting and grading you’ve done on your videos specifically the intro. Looked super natural.
Great work as always. Since stumbling upon this last week, I was *blown* away and have been plotting to get the S5. I'm stunned that it might have a slightly higher dynamic range than bmpcc.
I just shot a feature film on the S5. I shot into the Ninja, 5.9k, Full Frame, Prores, 422, 12 bit and the image is just poetry.
Spencer I love these "short films" that u do. I would love to see more but a little longer! Thank u.
Impressive comparison. Very well done and the fact that you are in focus with the S5 in the contrary of the black magic that doesn’t autofocus... makes it all for this kind of video where you work alone without anybody to help focus.
I recently used the S5 mixed with Panasonic Eva 1’s internal and raw codec. I agree with u. Once fully graded, I can’t tell a difference.
I am thinking about springing for the S5 but was worried about internal codec quality... do you still think the difference is not noticeable?
how do i find the eva 1 internal raw codec? sorry for the dumb question im new to cameras and video
Thanks for this man, love how you do the budget-minded approach. Def no need to spend more than $2k on a body these days for a lot of content creation. Picked up an XT3 last year and sold my a6500, partly based on your review and have been happy!
Hi from France
Thank you a lot for this video. It made me buy this camera. I had it for a few months and it's great !
Very good report - Thanks for your effort on that!
Dude you're good! Came for the review and stayed for the beautiful cinemtaic shots !
Great video Spenser! I can't wait to get the RAW upgrade for my Lumix S1!
This is a really really good video bro!! loved it.
I’ve had my S5 for three days now and I am very happy with my results so far
Love the S5 with the Ninja V... I am seriously tempted to sell my G9 and upgrade. Great video!! I currently shoot on the ZCam, but would love a backup option to it, and the S5 quality is impressive even if the lens cost the same price as a small volkswagen car
That beginning was so freaking cool. Wow
loved the video mate!
Great shots. That grain is on point.
I just sold my Fuji XT3 last week and got the S5. I love it. If I had one word to describe the camera it would be "thoughtful". From the touchscreen allowing you to change audio levels in headphones when you plug them in, to the small port on battery tray allowing a Dummy battery cable to pass through. It's made for filmmakers.
Why sell the xt3?
@@kingsamvisuals Because Fuji keeps playing with their video customers. They keep releasing those slow ass lenses with loud autofocus. Who wants a 15-36 F6 lens? Not me. So I sold it and went with Panasonic.
@@joshdiditt F6?? What 😅
@@joshdiditt Just recently doing a comparison wheter to buy an XT4, A7III, or Lumix S5, from all of the camera, i think i fell in love with Lumix's Color, it is so beautiful.
Whoa the S5 blooms compared to 6K. So glad I own an S5! Just need to get atomos!
This video was such a pleasant experience. Thanks. Have you done a review on the Gh5s?
Great review Spenser! Thank you :)
Now come on seriously guys that elongated out of focus to focus shot was absolutely beautiful. That is a creative tool right there and I’m absolutely not joking. It felt deliberate maybe it was?
Great review. I own the S1H and I am about to buy the ninja v. Would love to see a exposure guide from you for prores raw. How do you expose for skin in IRE for example, or how to expose darker scenes properly to minimize noise.
Next step should be for Panasonic to release a small multifunction camera like this with good internal NDs, then it ll really be tough competition for C70 and BMPCC6K Pro
Dude the S5 is so underrated! Loved the video man!
The S5 is a beast! I've been using it for the past half year, mainly as a b-cam / gimbal camera next to my rigged out BMPCC4k. Also have been using it a lot for smaller, more run & gun style shoots without a rig or gimbal :) Also for photo's it's quite amazing!
Hey mate, awesome to hear you love the S5. Is there a particular reason you chose it over something like the A7Siii? I'm trying to decide between the two. Thanks =)
@@itsryanwilkes Mostly got the S5 because of the price. + when shooting in BRAW on the pocket 4k you can change the color setting to o V-Log / V-gammut, so they match really great.
Do you use your S5 with a Ninja V, or using the internal codecs?
@@raksh9 Internal codecs for now, but planning on getting a Ninja V in the future.
@@JARIVISUALS Good to know, thank you. Seriously considering moving from G9 to S5.
Very informative video, thanks for sharing.
Wonderful intro - very creative and true! Seems like a good value though I think the S5 is a little flat compared to the Black M. I love grain but that one didn’t feel organic - for better words. I would tone it down just a little. Great channel bro!
My youtube versus grain journey has just begun. You’re probably right! Thx for the reply 🙏
your work is insane man 👍 often find myself wondering what camera supports you use. cartoni by any chance?
Was the intro A Ghost Story inspired? Really got those vibes and I love it!
I just picked up my S5 today. I'm charging the battery right now. One thing that inspired me to get it was an AF hack that seems to work most of the time. I haven't tried it yet myself, but I will as soon as I start shooting. But, another YT-er demonstrated that after you get the AF box around the subject's head, you nudge the joystick on the back of the camera. At which point, you will see four notches on each side of the AF box in the monitor view. Apparently, those notches indicate that the AF is "locked" onto the subject's head. From there, it seems to hold focus as the subject moves around. I hope that does work. Because it would be a huge plus when I want to run and gun.
Anyway...I will definitely look into getting the Ninja V for that 5.9K export option. I also have a BMPCC4K, which is awesome. But, I was looking for a full frame camera next. Hence, I picked up the S5. I hope to create content on the S5 myself in the coming days. Thanks again for your excellent content and review. Your footage looked fantastic as well. Cheers.
whats your set up now? did you get the autofocus to work? I'm thinking of getting the S5
reminds me of 2015 when I first bought my sony a7s and NEEDED a atomos recorder just to do 4k. I'm over HDMI cables and relying on monitors just to get a certain resolution or file format
Thanks for the video. Highlight/shadow relationships are considerably better on the Black Magic in this test. It's the difference between filmic and video-ish really. Cheers.
the rolloff looks so cinematic
I loove the video edit, and the comparison of lumix and blackmagic 💯. Currently waiting for S5 to be delivered 😊
So how would this compare to the Sony A7S III since it does ProRes RAW?
Great content, thanks 🙏
Hi, Spencer! I really appreciate your videos! I was wondering if you had any tips for vintage lenses that would be suitable to this (S5) camera? Thanks again for your content!
I have a feeling this has been asked before, BUT: have you thought about uploading your test files somewhere so people can take a dive into the footage in Resolve?
ProRes RAW files aren’t compatible with Resolve (direct competition to BRAW). That’s one of the most frustrating thing about it. So you would have to convert your footage into regular ProRes (loosing RAW), or image sequences like Cinema DNG (but it’s huge and very CPU intensive).
Thanks for the video, Spencer. Panasonic always bring great quality and value to the table. Now, if only it would output to BRAW. Time to revisit the sigma fp with video assist or hold out for BMD announcing full frame tilty/flippy screen pocket 6K Pro with internal variable ND this week? 🤞
BRAW enabled
Now that we can record BRAW on Lumix s5, and s1 as well with Blackmagic Video Assist 12g.....the workflow issue is also completely sorted. I was thinking of having BMPCC 4k as a b-cam for my BMPCC 6k but this new Panasonic firmware upgrade has confused me a little as with s5 and s1 I can have a camera that can also click pictures as well. What would be your choice ?
Hi. I see you used the sigma 35 for the shoot. Did you need an adapter to fit it in the camera? Is it full frame? Thank you!
I have the S1 and the next firmware update (2.0) should bring that 5.9k raw to the S1 as well!
To me the s5 looked nicer!! And I own the pocket 6k and have been thinking about getting the s5 alongside so this video helped haha!!!
8:26 The S5 looks so much better than the BMPCC. The latter seems to have too much contrast. The S5 rolloff is superb.
You can make these two look identical in post.
@@DennisSchmitz It could be the lens too. Not sure that we have a fair comparison. To me just the workflow is a no-brainer with BM, even if it had slightly lesser image quality.
Still! Bmpcc had a texture! How do I get that on my s5?
@@DennisSchmitz You can also create giant spaceships in post. For me, Panasonic's native 'look' is just better.
@@DennisSchmitz I own both and that’s more or less true. You can get them within 95% of each other, with two differences. The pocket 6K has noticeably less DR and the S5’s midtones look a tad less natural than the P6K. I would also like to add that the Pocket 6K’s image is naturally sharper that the S5/atomos, when sharpness is off on both cams
Woahh, your amazing for an actor , model.
Any plans for comparing 12 bit prores vs 12 bit BRAW side by side ? great video, thank you.
Can you please offer some insight on how to power an S5 setup with the Vmount battery? I heard that you can't use the same dummy batteries to D Tap like the S1 and SH1 can?
Hey Spencer, love your channel.
What lens is on the S5 at 2:45?
How does the internal codec compare to prores 422hq and prores raw? Do you see any major difference with them?
i think the anamorphic capabilities are not highlighted enough in youtube and it is amazing
Now i NEED to buy the Ninja V. thanks for the video
Hi, do you know in the case if I want to use the ninja v just for monitoring (so not shooting on RAW or ProRes .. just I want to record internally with my camera sd card) how can I do playback?
Great one! I would love to hear your thoughts about the S5 and BRAW with a blackmagic recorder, since you said you're using Davinci Reaolve.
Crap, I was sure I had subscribed to your channel... well, I did it again, lol! Great video and great camera!
Quick question. Did you color grade the b-roll footage the same way you showed in your video "How to achieve truly cinematic color"?
I prefer blackmagic in that particular correction because of the ''3D pop'' it has although S5 has a better rolloff between brightness and shadows
Hello friend, congratulations on your work, keep helping the community. I'm curious to test a raw file on this machine would you have any to make available?
stunning images
Hey. Which song from musicbed is it (the synth one)?
Hi! Can you reccomend what program do you use for video editing? I use Premiere now but i heard that many pro colorists use Blackmagic studio. Can you suggest what to use? I use canon R
Sounds and looks like an awesome camera.
The S5 is most likely going to be my next camera. Such an insane value overall for what you're getting with that camera! And DAMN, the image quality is gorgeous!
Two questions though; Do you plan on keeping yours, Spenser, or was this just a rental for the video? Also how would you compare the S5 to the Fuji XT3?
Had the X-T4 for a short while and compared it to my S1H. The image out of the X-T4 looks plasticky, lacks tonality and has less dynamic range in comparison to the S1H (post firmware 2.0 NR -1) image. The S5 looks basically identical.
@@DennisSchmitz identical to XT4 or S1H?
@@MesaVerdeProductions The S5 and S1H. S5 is just a tiny bit more sharp.
Im on the Fence Spencer ....Black Magic Pocket 6k or Z cam E2 S6 ??? Oh and how do you deal with the lack of IR filter on the Pocket 6k ?
hey! great review! do you think S5 is better now than S1 (with VLog upgrade ofc.)? 😁
If you already have a solid mirrorless camera would you recommend this set up over a pocket cinema 6K?
Can you dual record (internal + external) at the same time?
i want ask, with atomos ninja V.. how about record 4K 60p, still crop to apsc mode?
Hey Spencer. May I know the name of the song in the beginning of this video? Thank you!
Hi! Will you be looking at nikon z6 II with Atomos V? Thanks
Hi Spenser, as I use LUMIX S5 with ninja V, I notice a very high delay, I would like to know how you deal with that issue, thanks you.
So is the dynamic range higher with these RAW files than with the internal V LOG files?
Really need a flippy screen and autofocus to go along with my Bmpcc4k. This s5 is so close!
Hi Spenser, is this ProRes Raw output function free? I just cannot find the answer online.
Eagerly waiting for the next firmware that is gonna bring all those video capabilities to the S1. Got it for less than $1300 so plenty of room for an Atomos.
Hi, I mainly shoot videos should get the S5. Now I have a Fuji xt3. The image quality is better?
Any lag on the external monitor? Any record limit when using atomos for 4K 24/60
Does anybody know what filmgrain he used in the beginning of the Video? It just looks to dope
Almost every camera using the IMX 410, especially FX9 and S1H/S5/S1, do particularly well with mixed lighting.

Does anyone know where to get the crop he uses for the b-roll clips?
Was this with its firmware updated to 2.0 (Nov 24, 2020) or 2.1 (Dec 22, 2020)? They supposedly improved its AF in the updates.
Any latency for focus pulling form monitors? Thanks.
Have you seen any line skipping or glitching when using PR Raw with S5?
my next camera. i’m convinced.
Can you give me a few reasons why the black magic could perform better on a high end commercial shoot? I am super curious
Spenser please talk about ProRes RAW workflow and colorgrading V-log footage
Hey Spenser, can you recommend some good prime lenses for the S5? I have the Canon EF adapter for it as well, looking for the film look the Voigtlander lenses were able to accomplish on my GH5.
Canon FD lenses might be in that vein, or if you like the look at the Bourne Supremacy, the older Nikon 28-70 is an option. As someone who shoots extensively with Voigtlanders on MFT, it's a very alluring image that is not easy to find in other contemporary lenses. More likely to find that look in vintage lenses.
@@raksh9 Can you link me to the Nikon lens and appropriate adapter for the S5? I've been using FD lenses and love them but a zoom option with a similar style would be perfect for me.
@@Fathom216 From what I understand, the Nikon SLR lens used in the Bourne Supremacy is a rehoused Nikon 29-70mm f2.8 ED-IF AF-S. It was rehoused into a cinema lens style, although the optics were untouched, from what I have read. A standard passive adapter from Nikon to L mount would work fine, Urth/Gobe make decent adapters.
If you like FD lenses, then look into the FD 28-85mm f4.
What’s the bitrate you get when shooting at 5.9k prores raw 12bit on the atomos ninja?
thanks for this video
I keep getting a glitch in my footage on the S5 and the Ninja it’s so weird
What glotch
Me too! I can’t find anything about it online, but it’s like a very minimal line, very occasional small glitch. Always on the same few spots. More anoying than anything and it seems to show up more on certain HDMI cables. As far I can see, the cable or input isn’t broken here.
I saw that the signal quality has been upgraded in the latest ninja V firmware, but I haven’t tested it yet. We’ll see, it see, the glitches seem to have been reduced over a few updates.
How do you feel about the Zcam compared to the Pocket 6k?
Please talk about that flappy! I really want that one!
Thanks for the informative video. May I please ask, what lens did you use for this scene at 2:42 ?
