This is very similar to how I make my apple crisp, but I’ve never tried using lemon juice/zest, and have never pre-cooked the apples in sugar before baking the crisp. I’ll have to give these small additions a try! Thanks. :)

I've just made this and it's amazing! Unfortunately the granny smith apples I used didn't hold their shape and kind of turned to mush :( but I think I overcooked them a bit when they were in the pan. That hasn't stopped me from going back for a second serving though!! 10/10 flavour it's delicious!

just ordered some gear from your shop ... ... i might make some changes in your recipe ie the crumble i will remove the oats (yes this coming from a Scots man and btw i do like my porridge oats) and nutmeg (i don't like nutmeg) i will use a different apple as i don't like Granny Smiths or Bramleys .... just a pity it's not the season for Cox's they make for excellent Apple Tarts (i don't like my apples to have the tarte taste) ... everyone has their own preferences

Hi John! Thanks for posting this video, I tried your recipe and it turned out even more delicious than expected! We did run into a little hitch in the process and I'm trying to work out what went wrong. When we added the apples to the hot sugar, the sugar seemed to immediately solidify in some areas. We were wondering if this was due to the apples cooling the sugar too rapidly, or maybe we let the sugar get too hot. Can you shed any light? It didn't spoil the crumble in the end, luckily! I love this recipe, the one I use is pretty similar but adds 1 tbs milk to the apples in the dish to stop them drying out.

Hi John! Thanks for posting this video, I tried your recipe and it turned out even more delicious than expected!
We did run into a little hitch in the process and I'm trying to work out what went wrong. When we added the apples to the hot sugar, the sugar seemed to immediately solidify in some areas. We were wondering if this was due to the apples cooling the sugar too rapidly, or maybe we let the sugar get too hot. Can you shed any light? It didn't spoil the crumble in the end, luckily!

It's just the sudden drop in temperature when adding the cold apples, nothing to worry about, keep cooking until the lumps of toffee melt again.

Great video as always John, but I stopped to think "Hang on there's some jiggery pokery going on here, I'm sure I made an apple crumble following one of John's recipes". Mrs Hackney said "don't be such a doughnut Grimsby, he made an apple and blackberry crumble but I asked if you can do one that was just apples". "Oh", I replied, "that's right I remember now".
It's been sometime since I made that crumble and I've now come under pressure to do another one, so thanks for that.

Never tried is the simple answer, but I should imagine dripping a little too stiff for pastry, the dripping I buy, is very hard, home produced could work tho.

Great video as usual, I have often made apple crumble but I uses sweetened cookers not eating apples ..will have to try the recipe out.. and my mom use to put a teaspoonful of salt into a bowl of cold water and drop her chopped apples into that to stop them from discolouring if she didnt always have a lemon..Thanks for taking time to share the video John ..much appreciated
