That’s insane. I lived at Yonge and Eglinton for years while it caused chaos being built. I got married and moved away 8 years ago and it’s still not done
Wow, that is slow. Here in Paris, in the meantime, they've started building several new lines and extensions and already opened about 40 kilometers of new extensions... Like 22 km and 12 stations on metro line 14, all deep underground, with 2 openings respectively in 2020 and 2024, including a massive Grand Paris Express hub station. And 6 km with 6 stations, mostly underground with a 500 meter viaduct, for metro line 11 Eastern extension. Plus, an 8 km extension with 3 huge new stations for RER E Western extension, including one built with "mole techniques" through an underground parking garage, under a working convention and expo center between skyscraper foundations in la Défense business district and without vertical access from the surface. And last , a 3.5km and 7 stations surface extension for circular tramway line T3b... Since 2012, they've also opened 10 additional tramway lines with 125 km of new dual track routes. Though, of course, they started building the tramway lines that opened between 2012 and 2014 before 2011. They've also, during this time, entirely dug the new line 16 and are currently finishing the 35 km lomg Southern section of line 15, with 16 stations, that's due to open next year... In other words, they've already dug and built more than 110 km, or over 60%, of the Grand Paris Express underground infrastructure, plus some other extensions, while only starting construction and digging between 2016 and 2018. (First TBM launched in 2018). Parisians feel like the construction works are taking ages, so I can't even imagine how Torontonians must feel seeing this half underground, half surface, beefed up tramway line still not open after 13 years... Let's hope this line opens soon.
The problems appear to be due to the different caternary types in place between the above ground and underground versions. The Underground versions have been found to be much more fragile and prone to breakage compared to the above ground versions and thus causing issues with reliability. Apparently the caternary in question is a central part of the CBTC system that the line is using to automate train speeds, and only certain caternary components are compatible with CBTC, with the type that is actually compatible that is prone to breakage. This explains why the Finch line is progressing better than the Eglinton line because they use an above ground version. Metrolinx is trying to find a solution, but because they have forced themselves into a corner with regards to the Caternary issue, they are simply patching the trouble spots and hoping that the rest of the underground caternary does not break. Calls to replace the entire caternary system apparently cannot be fulfilled because this is the only caternary that is compatible with CBTC. If the Caternary is going to be replaced in its entirety, this will push the opening date of the line to 2026. Oops. Oops.
IMO, the only reason for the ever increasing delays is that certain people with lots of $$$$$ stand to clean up, by causing businesses along the line to go under; and thereby creating a situation wherein they can swoop in and buy up real estate in the cheap.
The CEO needs to go. No one in project management cannot tell you when a project is expected to be completed. When someone tells you that they can only announce the opening date 3 months in advance of the date is basically has totally lost control of this project and has ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA what the team is doing. He needs to go.

The ttc should be defunded. I almost get hit by a bus, street car nearly 3 times a week. Yesterday a bus was pulled off to the side of the road, stopped, randomly. So I tried to bike around it. The bus driver then sped up on me, and sped in front of me, shooting dust in my face. If this is where my tax dollars are going. I vote to defund the ttc and put my tax dollars to better use
Around 2.5 million people use the TTC each day, you asking them to eat dust? I understand TTC and metrolinx management is lousy at best, and some employees there can be jerks, but to dissolve the whole transit system because of a few bad apples?
@@alankingchiu that’s a very fair point. But maybe they could use some of that fund to support help lines for their communities mental health. Agreed, and now they are making the same mistake in Missy/Brampton with the Hazel McCallion line.

By the time it actually opens, the train cars will be in need of replacement. Probably by 2034 .
