Hi Georgia, in the early days, prostitution was in many areas of Singapore. Different groups of immigrants occupied different areas where they conducted business and trade. It was a national decision to confine prostitution to one specific area so that other areas could be developed for economic growth. Geylang was then the best option having all perspectives considerered, then😀
cant live without plastic bags in sinapore, i need them to line my dustbin and those staying on high rise need plastic bags to contain the thrash to throw it thru the chute, so untill singapore comes up with a " incinerator kind of chute or something theres no way plastic bags can be stopped totally. I literally bring 10 plastic bags when i go on vacation to hong kong to use in the hotel room
Chinatown has become a tourist area in 1996 and the prostitute are shifted away from the city area to geylang because the city cbd area needed a clean reputation. Near to Chinatown are Chinatown. Point, office buildings, and the normal trade like the hospital and shopping area. Geylang is less developed and therefore shifted there
I'm British and I live in Geylang and I absolutely love it! It has so much more culture than other spots in Singapore (just big condo blocks that so many expats live in). Having said that there is actually quite a few expats that live in Geylang as it's a good location and often cheaper. I'm surprised you said you felt stared at because there's often lots of white girls in the area haha. In terms of prostitution it is predominantly only on a few roads but the women are very polite and will often chat to you. I hope this helps your perspective on Geylang!
The word Geylang is found early in Singapore's history and also in early topographical maps showing marsh and coconut plantations beside and adjacent to the mouth of the Kallang River, home to the Orang Laut (sea gypsies). One possible etymological link in the stock vocabulary of the Malay is 'geylanggan' meaning to 'twist' or 'crush' a reference to the process of extracting the coconut meat and milk used by the locals to thicken curries in Malay-Chinese (Peranakan) cuisine. The idea persists to this day, of the process of heartache and desperation associated with the broken and hurting lives of those involved in buying and selling of sex and drugs on the streets and in the registered brothel in the area. The word Geylang may be derived from a corrupted spelling of the Malay word 'gelang' which is a type of edible creeper (Portulaca oleracea). This is a more plausible explanation for the name because Malays typically name places based on the abundance of certain plant species (e.g. Melaka after the tree species of the same name) or geological formations (e.g. Bukit Gombak based on the comb-like hill summit. Found this info from wiki.. hope it’s helpful to you. Enjoy your holidays and Merry Christmas Georgia and Justin.
I love it when you walk the Singapore streets (even Geylang 😂) in your vlogs as I still miss the city so much, even after 12 years of living back in the U.K. I’m also trying to reduce my plastic consumption. Six months ago I switched to solid shampoo and conditioner bars and started using soap instead of endless bottles of shower gel.
Merry Christmas to Justin & yourself Georgia, thanks for some fantastic video blogs in 2018 & I look forward to many more in 2019. Have a great time in Australia & on New Year’s Eve, the fireworks on Sydney Harbour should be awesome.
Hello Georgia honestly yes geylang will be crowded with "working girls" at night but not during the day. By the way Georgia there are lots of nice food in geylang. I am half Malay whenever i miss eating Malay kueh i will go to geylang serai and there are lots of kueh there 😚 i live in jurong west but i really don't mind traveling to geylang serai
Happy Birthday and Happy New Year, Georgia! Thanks for your vlogs in 2018. Enjoy your holiday in Sydney. Don't forget your sunscreen lotion as it's summertime!
This area is really colourful and unique and very “Asian” indeed. Thumbs up for having the courage to explore a face of Singapore that’s not often shown to the world!
I love Brawn and Brains!! The hawker centres close on certain days for cleaning but try another day! Check out Roast Paradise at Old Airport Rd Hawker Ctr while you are there. Amazing Char Siew and Roasted Pork. Well worth the money and def worth the queue time!
I usually bring tote bag whenever I go out, so if I shop for something I don't ask for plastic as I think it's quite a hassle. I rather just dump everything in my tote bag.
Happy birthday in advance! I remember watching those vlogs when you were still living in Holland village. It must have been nostalgic when you went back there.
Have you been to Little India? Tried all the delicious food like Puri, Battura, Thosai, Chapati? However try not to go on weekends, the place is packed with Indian or Bangladeshi workers.... Go on weekdays if you can.....
Lol. You're sure it's not because you are just dirty minded?🤔 But rather than the title, I found her pronunciation the one that sounded wrong. I actually thought she said Gay Land like it's a theme park... Haha!
Getting periods on holidays and crying on your birthday, I thought you were describing my life. Have a safe trip and enjoy Sydney, hope it doesn't rain! Happy Birthday !
Actually, I am quite upset to see plastics are still being so widely used in SG.... While many countries has already phased out plastic bags in supermarkets....SG still fine nothing about it. For me, I don't use plastic straws any more, and I will take reused containers to pack foods from hawker centers.
We pronouce it al-june-need. Also, gay-lahng (instead of [gay-lang]uage). Sig-lahp (instead of sig-lap).. so basically 'lah' instead of the usual british sounds we are used to ^^ (see: www.angmohdan.com/pronouncing-singapore-place-names/)
Hi Georgia, not sure if you've heard of Geylang Adventures (facebook.com/geylangadventures/ ), but it's a good starting point to find out more about the socioeconomic context/circumstances in Geylang! Went for one of the evening trails and personally found it to be quite an eye-opening experience.
Plastic is incinerated in Singapore. Heat from the incineration is used to produce steam and generate electricity. Quitting plastic in Singapore is just needless masochism because you are just substituting one source of co2 for another (natural gas). If you want to reduce emissions, use less air conditioning and consume less electricity.
I believe the government let geylang the way it is because it is rich with culture that you cannot replicate and see anywhere else in sg. Since sg is a modern city yet they want to promote it as a rich culture country. So i think that’s why they didn’t want to change geylang.
I've been using a menstrual cup for 8 yrs and do not ever want to go back to sanitary pads/tampons. It's cleaner, reusable, more environmentally friendly and cheaper in the long run. Menstrual cramps: take evening primrose oil supplements daily; drink warm milky drinks (hot chocolate, milo, etc), no coffee, tea (diuretic drinks), chilled drinks; a hot water bottle or warmed gel pack below the tummy is very comforting.
Yep, i had to switch to tea. Once i drink coffee, before i even realize, i have already drank 3 jugs of coffee and and is preparing to make more. I just love the taste, no matter the amount i drink it doesn't make me more alert or give me an energy boost. After a week of replacing water with coffee , i was got anxious easily, sweat a lot at randomly timings and places and the worst thing was my heart kept beating really fast and "hard". I still enjoy my no sugar white coffee but i tone it down to a few times a week.
Ermmm.. there's the more Malay part of Geylang that you have not been to. Well basically, there's 4 main races in Singapore: Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian. You've been to Chinatown, and then the more Chinese part of Geylang, not the Malay one. Not sure if you've been to Little India. To be honest, there's always that sleezy area in these three places, whether it's make known to you or otherwise. Anyway, Happy Holidays!!!
Beautiful videos as always, and will always follow your channel even after your partner and you leave Singapore in future, as the both of you move on in the journey of life.
Omg when i went to geylang i saw gangs in a big bloody fight omfg until now i am so scared of going back there to eat my favourite food hell no blood was dripping down from the other guy's head and it was running down the street , and guess what they used glass bottles hitting each other's head ouch . But you shoud try the roti prata shops there really yummy lol , somedays they do washing and cleaning of the market .
Think you visited the wrong areas of Geylang which have other vibrant cultural sites and activities and especially so during Ramadan when there are bazaars and even cultural shows for visitors of all races to enjoy, shop and explore.
The weather in Singapore is AWFUL. Hot and humid! I didn't left my house for a week. Boring malls and people. Gosh, can't wait to head back to America/Europe.
Geylang is mainly run-down because the "customers " don't come for the buildings, something else lures them there.. hence why the building owners probably have no motivation to renovate , they are catering to a certain "customer" base.
Singapore has some of the best Tea I've ever tasted (TWG) . You should check out the boutique tea retailer T2 tea whilst you're in Sydney, and try a good flat white & a real Aussie hamburger to complete your Sydney experience!
You smile you got vertical short line hole on your side face just outside the diamond shape of your lips and your chin got semi ball. I lived in Singapore and I am chinese.
Red light district is there because the gahmen decided they will tolerate them there and no where else. Better to have an area you concentrate them in than endlessly play a cat and mouse game.
Rain 26°c
No rain 35°c plus humidity
So rain:)

I love rain especially with rolling thunder.
Love the rain, the only time we have a cooling day

I think geylang comes from the Malay word kilang which means factory

To prevent cramp, stop drinking cold beverages, try it..

Always worth a look at the NEA website for hawker center closures and cleaning dates:

Christmas is the coolest when it's snowy and cold.
George geylang Serai is best place for shopping and best autectic malay food to try...that place tht you went is" red light district".
I didn't get to visit the hawker center either. It was closed when i visited Singapore.
Happy birthday in advance! I remember watching those vlogs when you were still living in Holland village. It must have been nostalgic when you went back there.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!!! Georgia and Justin....
Every time I watch your vlogs, they always make me want to go back to SG! ♥️
I like the rain but hell with the humidity that follows. Sticky sweat

Georgia, your title and the location sounds very wrong hahah
hmmm Fist time
"Geylang" ~ first time🤔🙄
I don't get it...whats wrong?

I love rain with loud thunder if i am not going out 😃
4:14 very nice building. But I hate those car.
Its part of my new year’s resolution to be environmental friendly!

Because they are mostly private owned and it is as old as Chinatown I think.

Hey Georgia you should really take one of the local tours there which will introduce you to geylang, it’s history and happenings!
Compared to 10 years ago Geylang is now safer. Like what mrbrown said "You can 2am go there and eat frog porridge".
Have a safe flight Georgia!!! And happy advanced birthday as well
Should've gone during the nighttime 😏 The brown towels are dried there after you know, the fun stuff, happened in the brothels the night before.
Rain is love, especially when it's on a stay-in Friday night ❤
Btw it's pronounced gay-lung Georgia!
Nice one. Only just discovered you. Let me know when you come to Tiong Bahru and want a coffee.
11:11 what r those background noise?

Hi where staying at the grand copthorne on the waterfront. Is it far from the old parts of Singapore. Thank you chris&kitty Liverpool England.

yall should visit during the fasting month at night :) there's LoTs of food and stuff haha
Rain ain't so bad if you got a cup of hot chocolate alongside a good movie :P
You've always wanted Christmas on the beach in Australia, I've always wanted to get out of Australia and have a white Christmas in Europe!
9:05 I'm too innocent for this. haha
I just love how your glasses make you look like you're wearing a real life snapchat filter. They seem to make your eyes look bigger! Haha
The reason Geylang is “rundown” is simply cos it has not been gentrified like the Tanjong Pagar or Katong.
Think you visited the wrong areas of Geylang which have other vibrant cultural sites and activities and especially so during Ramadan when there are bazaars and even cultural shows for visitors of all races to enjoy, shop and explore.
merry xmas to you and your hubby.hehe
Red light district moved because the government was trying to clean up Chinatown and the surrounding areas to be more tourist -friendly.
I thought my laptop died for a moment at 9.08 hahaha
11:17 Coffee is a drug. Plz don't get addicted.

Wearing shades to make Geylang look more shady under broad daylight.
+1
Or just cos it’s sunny? Haha
HAHAHAHA
you should try halal food in sg!
Geylang is not "run-down"... it's "nostalgic" :p
Geylang is mainly run-down because the "customers " don't come for the buildings, something else lures them there.. hence why the building owners probably have no motivation to renovate , they are catering to a certain "customer" base.
