  • Early this year, I removed the magnesium anode rod out of my water heater and replaced it with a
electric anode rod to try and eliminate the sulfur smell from my water. I give my thoughts six months after installing this.

I just installed the same electric anode rod this year on our 12-14 year old hot water tank. Didn’t know about such and purpose. Used a Ryobi 18v Impact 1/2 inch wrench to remove, came out very slick with no tank movement to bust water or gas lines. Only had about 8 inches of a 4’ anode rod when removed. Time will tell if it makes tank last longer.
Good luck on your competed project!

Have an AO hot water tank ready to install brand new from plumbing supply store . I replaced the anode tube tank empty and not hooked up yet makes it much easier and brand new tank should last for years to come.last tank never checked the anode rod and had rotten egg smell when taking hot shower we have hard water from the water company

Replace the elements same time as the anode. If you flush the tank and replace both upper and lower elements as well as the anode, it will eliminate the fulfur completely. The anode keeps build up off elements, when the anode is corrupt, the elements will begin collecting the minerals instead. As you said the sulfur smell was strong, that indicates it has been bad for a long time.

I’ll have to remember that. Thanks for the tip.

Great video by the way I was just curious does the item work as far as keeping the tank from breaking down

I haven't noticed that but it hasn't been a year yet.

I will say where I live I did not have any issues with the water for a few months and then I noticed the water discolored with an odor. Had nothing to do really with the anode rod just the location

My water is VERY iron rich that comes out from the well. I basically had a company come out and re-drill my well because we first thought it was mud making its way in.
I know about discolored water. LOTS of iron out salt.

If the smell is the result a of bacteria on the rod then this will fix it. If the smell is in the water, cold water will still smell and likely the hot water as well.

They both did. The removal of the anode rod helped tremendously but I wonder...at what cost? I am not convinced that this will make the life of the water heater last longer, but at least the smell is gone.

Honestly, I don’t think so. I’m skeptical that it even does ANYTHING but we’ll see in a few years if I need to replace the tank.

So it works, but it may not work? Lol I mean if it’s not smelling 100% of the time it’s kinda a win

1:08 WRONG… anode rods protect the tank against rust/corrosion. Removing the Anode with dramatically shorten the heaters lifespan.
Don’t remove it, swap it from the factory magnesium to an aluminum alloy.

Too late. Already installed the electric anode rod.

I can't even make out what you're trying to say from this statement. Don't remove it... instead swap it out. Isn't that the same thing

Will the Cheaper Powered anode rods that they sell on Amazon work just as well as the More expensive "double the price" units Corro-Protec sells . I have not found a compare video on these different powered anodes. Which one did You Buy?

I bought the Voguuy powered anode off Amazon a few days ago for 87.99, has the same 20 year warranty. No one will know if they last this long or not, but if two products seem the same, I'm spending the lesser amount.
