      @@SSLFamilyDad I did this project yesterday. Genuinely a life-changing difference. Thanks so much for your guidance and encouragement. I had to use a cheater bar, and reached one point where I'd concluded it wasn't going to budge, even with that. I kept going, mainly out of anger and frustration, and it eventually gave. I went ahead and poured 3 pints of peroxide in, while I had the rod out, which I later drained - so it wouldn't get into the septic system.
      I had access to a free aluminum rod, so I used it as the replacement. The water heater is 17-18 years old, so I figured I'm good for the remaining life of the tank. My neighbor had bought the rod and then couldn't get the old one out. He dosed his system with peroxide through a filter as temporary fix, which he says has worked so far.
      I was amused to find the previous owners had left behind an estimate for a new purification system that included a sulfur treatment module. $8,000.00. It's questionable whether that would have done anything at all to help the problem (since it would be before the water heater in the system). The appropriate solution turned out to be free.
      Thanks again. I enjoy all of your videos. I'm picking up chicks in a couple of weeks for the first time and have appreciated your videos on that topic as well.

      Just replaced mine. 20 volt DeWalt impact wrench made for easy removal. Added a half cup of bleach before reassembly filled tank and let the hot water run through all the fixtures until I could smell bleach. Let it set a couple hours then flushed out the tank and lines. My anode wasn't corroded much. Just a few small divets. Maybe an eight of an inch in diameter. It's the original that came with the house 30 years ago. Probably didn't need replacement but put a new aluminum anode in. Guess we'll know in a couple weeks if this cured the issue of smelly hot water.

      No rod in the tank means that you were actually allowing the lining of the wall of the tank to brake down faster. Instead of attacking the rod it now attacks the coating on the inner tank. It shortens the life of the tank without a rod in the tank.

    Great informative video but I am trying to get my head around a few things. The whole purpose of a sacrificial anode rod is to be the “thing” where corrosion occurs rather than the glass-lined steel tank. In order for this to occur the sacrificial anode rod must be a lower galvanic material than the steel tank (ie magnesium or aluminum). The device you have installed is titanium which is much higher than steel. I get that it’s electrified using electrolysis but it still seems to me that the steel tank will corrode prematurely. I really REALLY want to trust that this device is good LONG term though I just don’t understand the science behind it

    • @corro-protec
      @corro-protec 2 года назад +8

      Hey Matt that's a very good question and I'm sure you're not the only one. The Corro-Protec system includes a titanium anode and a current rectifier. When the rectifier is connected to the nearest outlet, the rod in the tank supply a small amount of current into the water heater. This current completely stops the loss of energy from all metals to which the ground is connected. The corrosion process is then completely stopped. Since the anode is made out of titanium, it does not disintegrate over time.

    • @nmccw3245
      @nmccw3245 7 месяцев назад

      The powered anode rod works on the principle of impressed current galvanic protection. The titanium rod serves as an electrode (active anode) and will function with corrosion as long as power is supplied to it.

A few weeks ago, I replaced the anode rod with a fresh magnesium rod, and now the hot water smells much worse, and I've been looking for a solution. I was skeptical of the electric ones, but based on your videos, a few others, and a wiki page on impressed current cathodic protection, I've been convinced that these powered anode rod products are legitimate. Thanks again.

    • @jawkeye
      @jawkeye 3 года назад +2

      @@mindfulmagician7550 I think an aluminum rod would've probably worked fine for me as well. I originally went with magnesium because it protects the water heater a little better than aluminum (more reactive), and it's better for drinking water (though we don't drink the hot water). I've had the powered anode rod installed for the past 5 months or so, and I've been happy with it so far. The sulfur smell is gone and its little green light is still on.

    A good idea from plumber that serviced our heater, open hot water taps periodically when heating the tank back up, and do so in stages. The water being heated expands and builds pressure. While likely not resulting in a catastrophic failure, releasing the pressure as the process goes along will reduce stress on the heater and connections, etc.

    • @VROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM
      @VROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM 3 года назад +3

      That makes no sense and is unnecessary. The tank can handle it just fine. Think about this. Some families will run out of hot water every morning with all the people showering. Then it's filled with cold water and heats up again from the beginning each time. 365 times a year. It's not going to pressurize too much or the pressure valve would release. Seriously it's pointless to do that. The tank and all the plumbing are rated for this.

  • @Sandriell
    @Sandriell 2 года назад +10

    For anyone curious, the reason this occurs is because water naturally contains ion sulfates and these can be converted into hydrogen-sulfide gas which is what smells like rotten eggs. It is both highly toxic and flammable.
    In water heaters, the aluminum or magnesium anode rod inside the tank reacts with those sulfates to produce hydrogen-sulfide gas. When the sulfate levels are high, enough gas is produced to give the rotten-egg smell. Changing the anode will fix this issue.
    The other method by which this can occur is if the water contains both high levels of ion sulfates as well as sulfate reducing bacteria, which as the name implies feed on sulfates and in turn produce the hydrogen-sulfide gas. In this case you have to get rid of the bacteria. If only the hot water smells, (it is most likely the anode issue as stated earlier) it means a colony of the bacteria have grown within the hot water tank. If the cold water smells as well, then the bacteria exist inside the well. In both cases a shock chlorination treatment to the tank or the well will fix the issue, but may have to be repeated in time.

      This process just masks the problem for a few years. You simply need to fix the water of sulfates at the source. Even shocking it won't do that. It helps but doesn't fix it. To fix it, you have to aerate your well like a venturi on a daily. That will eliminate all problems developing any sulfates mixing with iron and producing the sulfur dioxide (rotten egg smell) this is the only way to truly fix it at the source.

      Absolutely! The technology behind our electronic anode rod isn't novel-it's used in various sectors, including the protection of gas pipelines in the US. While some skepticism arises from unfamiliarity or a lack of understanding, we've been specialists in this domain since 2006. Our product is designed to combat corrosion inside the tank. However, it's worth noting that it doesn't address outside corrosion, issues with the heating element, or other external challenges. Our focus is on delivering robust internal tank protection based on tried and tested technology.

    just so I understand this correctly, the water coming into the house already smells bad and the anode rod removes the smell? and when the rod is old and bad (not working) the smell comes back?
    does the cold water smell bad also?

    • @SSLFamilyDad

      Cold water does not smell, this is a chemical reaction that takes place in the hot water heater with a standard magnesium anode rod, using the titanium anode rod removes the problem reaction and subsequent smell

    • @SSLFamilyDad

      @@SSLFamilyDad Hey thanks for such a quick reply. I went back to my owners manual to double check and it says "This water heater is equipped with multiple sacrificial anodes." And when i look at the parts diagram, there are 3 anodes shown. i thought that was crazy too. It is a gas, indirect fired Bradford White water heater. In your opinion, do you think 1 powered anode rod would do the trick? And is it possible to just leave the other 2 anodes out? Thanks again for your help.

      @@mamabear9389, There's no doubt that a water softener slows the mineral build up, but because an instant water heater has to heat water almost ''Instantly'', it also will have mineral deposits faster.
