Petter actually drove for quite some time while not understanding his codriver due to bad english skills, not sure if thats the case here though. Fun fact 😅 «But but, its not only only»
That's the turbo antilag they used at that time. This sound you used to hear when the car is approaching you and at the moment the driver lift off the throttle.
Literally first time seen a video where that small rear spoiler had a massive effect like that. I thought they're mostly for looks those small ones, holy shit it had a massive effect.
Commentry got it wrong. It wasn't the lack of spoiler allowing the rear of the car to kick up, it was Petter's enormous lead balls forcing the front end into the ground.
At such jumps not only the spoilers matter, but also the wheel speed. If the wheels slow down after liftoff (because of breaking) the car gets a torque rotating it forwards (the bigger the wheels and speed, the greater the torque), and the opposite happens if you accelerate the wheels after jumping (by keeping your foot on the gas pedal). Perhaps with the big wing the car had a tendency to tilt up when jumping, but without it it nosedived, and even a master driver can be tricked by this.
Back when the scooby had relevance. Now it’s just another AWD 4 door car with more horsepower than you strictly need, Subaru need to put it back where it belongs, on a WRC rally stage.
The problem is it's too long... Impreza was initially developed as an A8 car, which meant it had to be just a slightly modified road car. Which meant in road version it had 4WD drive and everything and it was long. Same as Lancer, and hence these cars looked so spectacular on stages, driver had to really throw them into the corners heavily using Scandinavian Flick to make them turn. You could give it a modern rally suspension, but you won't change the fact it's too long to keep up with square geometry cars of today. BRZ would have been a better basis for a rally car, but then I bet fails some current homologation requirements.
@@Jimrlst Even if it wouldn't fail, it would probably screw up. The current homologation demands that car should be quite heavy, but allows square dimensions. Impreza/WRX or however Subaru calls the car this week, would have screwed up heavily. It doesn't mean it's bad car, rather that current WRC rules are heavily corrupted.
This just shows the importance and the big difference with downforce and without and why lots of us truck guys or street races or like race cars and generals have like big wings
Back then it was considered part of the fun to see and hear the card extremely close up. It took some accidents and deaths for that to change, current day rally events have very distant seating and won't let spectators even remotely close to the cars once the engine is running
I've never seen such a track like the one in Finland, if your wings get damaged in the slightest, the competitor is almost guaranteed to not win the event.
People who even attend Rallies in person have bigger balls than me, I couldn't stand the thought of a car slamming into me cuz they lost traction on the dirt.
The organizers should not even be legally allowed to begin without spectator seats fortified. These hypothetical deaths are easy to prevent and it would take an idiot to be shocked at the potential for an accidental massacre.

That seems very severe just for lack of spoiler. The speed of that rotation would need more force than just a spoiler to prevent so much rotational inertia. Could've been some other damage or incorrectly tuned rear suspension maybe? You can see in the first 2 humps that the car was nosediving before the jump, and obviously Petter is a goddamn legend so it doesn't seem like driver error.
