Sure they can do that, but it won't do them any good if they don't have budget for it. These missions cost money even after the rover has safely landed on the surface. Without people in mission control, it may as well just be a mass simulator. In that case it would be more useful to tear it down and use its components for other missions.

This is just NASA at this point. When they say they’re going to do something, expect about 1/10th of it to be actually done
and expect most of their budget to be given away to ineffectual private companies. hate to see it.
Its the fault of government and people thinking it has 20% of government budget and it should be cut, even though it has 0.5% of the government budget.

This is truly upsetting. Such a shame. Imagine being one of the engineers who now have to take apart this beautiful piece of equipment or the eager scientists excited to do some science and make discoveries through VIPER. This was such a huge step in building a lunar base and just like that, soiled! Money and time wasted! 🤦🏾😞

I think China has a pretty good shot of being the first to mars. I mean they’re currently the only country with their own space station (everyone else uses the ISS - except russia), and frankly their far more competent than the US (especially with sleepy joe in charge) and plus they actually make realistic goals; China aims to land humans on the moon by 2030, which is truly possible if they are serious about doing it, while NASA always make unrealistic deadlines like ‘we’re going back to the moon in 2024’, which turned into ‘we’re going back to the moon in 2026’, which has turned into ‘we’re going back to the moon in 2027’ which will probably become 2028. I find it hilarious that NASA claims they will land people on mars in the 2030s, because at the rate that they’re going with all these delays and cancellations China is going to have a self-sustaining base on Mars before the US even returns humans to the moon after nearly 60 years, and NASA needs to start getting it together if they want to get to mars by the 2040s, and they can start by not using outdated rockets that don’t constantly need repairs (referring to SLS, which is literally just mainly modified parts from the space shuttle smacked together into the shape of a Saturn V) and making realistic deadlines.
They already made so much in space in 20 years of manned spaceflight and with only 14 manned launchs i'm kind of curious what's next.

I spoke two weekends ago at a teen baseball game with someone who works for Astrobotics. She was so excited about this and I had told her I had been most interested in this mission. Then 4 days later it gets cancelled. Such Bullshit.

VIPER is by far not the first vehicle fully prepared and canned right before launch. Quite a few times missions have been scrapped due to failure of their predecessors or changing priorities. Cancelation of follow up to Gravity Probe B comes to mind that satellite was even fully tested
