    Without showing any bias to either truck, let me just say I am glad both of these trucks exist. Competition among the manufacturers ALWAYS benefits us as consumers! Thanks to GM & Toyota for producing these trucks!

      4Runner TRD has a rear diff lock standard. It also has the A-Trac system that is awesome - there are plenty of videos showing it in action.
      But the bottom line is durability, and nobody even comes close to Toyota.

    I traded my 4runner TRD PRO for the ZR2. Love this machine!!!! I opted for the gas version, I don't need a diesel. Loved my 4runner with no complaints but I was in need of a mid-sized truck. The Taco was way to uncomfortable for me, I felt like I was sitting on the floor and I just couldn't get an over all comfortable feel for the Taco, shame cause I do love Toyota products but if I don't love it why should I buy it? I need to enjoy my product and at the end of the day have some decent resale value when it comes time to trade or sale. This is my 1st Chevy and I LOVE this truck! Also at 14:31 he says it perfectly. "If your looking for a mid-size truck that is livable every single day and then on the weekends also delivers your Baja Dreams ." Perfectly said man.

      I'm still driving my 2003 4Runner Sport with the 4.7-liter V8, but I'm starting to shop around for something newer. I wish Toyota would make their trucks and SUVs a little more comfortable and luxurious with more power and better technology, but I guess they don't want to compete against themselves (Lexus). I'm waiting to see what the new Ford Ranger has to offer before I make a decision. I've seen some photos of late model "Ranger Raptors" that seem pretty appealing.

      I wanted a Tacoma so bad, but I just couldnt feel comfortable in it. I took it for a test drive 3 times! 3! But I just couldnt convince myself into buying it ... so i ended up with a Tundra TRD ... ironically for less price. than a Tacoma TRD manual. Hmmm sometimes the "market" is not rational.

    • @gilvietor1918
      @gilvietor1918 7 лет назад +11

      I had the Tacoma, my right hip kept falling asleep. I'm not a huge dude, I'm pretty well fit, 6'1" and it was awful on longer jaunts. I also despised that damn motor, it was fine with the stock tire, I put on some BFG AT's that were just a little bit bigger and boy did that ruin the vehicle. It was awful for fuel economy, terrible at finding gears going fast (where I live the freeway is 75mph), I was going to chase the rabbit with a rear gear after putting on an Icon stage 4. The hip thing progressed worse and worse, to the point I started to get scared.
      Now, one thing about that Tacoma, it was worth damn near what I bought it for, which is something I've only had in a few other vehicles (those were typically insanely discounted, not something Toyota does with Tacomas).
      So far, I love the ZR2 (we have a diesel), it fits on trails, is very stable on the highway, rarely shifts at high speeds, accelerates on par with the Tacoma we had, even to the point my wife thinks the ZR2 is faster. It can go fast off road, and on the highway it is just a joy, not to spongy but not so stiff you think you're in a one ton.
      I don't find myself going, "oh man I wish I had gotten the V6", ever.

I've owned two TRD Off Road Tacomas (2001 and 2009). Last year my wife and I decided to treat ourselves to new vehicles, She got a 2018 TRD Pro 4Runner and while I did test drove the TRD-Pro Taco, (Puts on Nomex, EOD-Bomb suit and wraps himself in aluminum foil) I came home with the Colorado ZR2 Diesel and love it.

    This is Off-Road.com and we're not deducting points because a vehicle is less capable off road? Ground clearance is huge. The ZR2 and a Subaru have similar ground clearance and that's acceptable?

    • @jessehernandez5043
      @jessehernandez5043 7 лет назад +1

      Jorel Davis ground clearance at the diff. Subarus are 4 corner IFS which automatically gives them an edge with ground clearance. Chevy should've went with at least a 32" if not a 33" tire for the ZR2 version. Where the ZR2 thrives is traction not ground clearance for the time being

    • @hochhaul

      @jordanyang3066 7 лет назад

      Jesse Hernandez
      Then why give it a front locker?
      You can't use a front locker on high speed desert running with all those corners. Makes no sense and with all that traction you still need clearance for whoops.
      Clearance is the most important thing when off roading right after suspension and recovery gear.

    • @jessehernandez5043
      @jessehernandez5043 7 лет назад

      Jordan Yang because it's design was to be more than just a desert runner.the front locker allows this vehicle to be more capable than a typical 2wd prerunner with a rear locker. For someone like me who doesn't always have a boat launch and has to beach launch. Front and rear lockers made the world of difference. This is the adventure vehicle. If you've ever desert run you would know that ultimate ground clearance isn't what is important, it's wheel travel.

    • @jamesworth4576
      @jamesworth4576 7 лет назад

      yes, that extra half, yes, half inch of ground clearance on the trd is going to make all the difference. The Colorado has stock rock slider rails in case that .5 inches makes all the difference. Your argument is pretty weak.

  • @scottfprichard

      A smooth ride means the tires are constantly in contact with the ground as the springs and dampeners are pushing down onto the ground all the time, and they make the right adjustments even as new bumps appear and fall away. This is pretty much the most important part of a high speed offroad vehicle and the result is a smooth ride.

      Gm is part of the problem the z71 and zr2 colorado are the exception. I just bought a trd off road, and was looking at the z71 Silverado, it was the most pussyfied truck I have ever been in. The z71 has the same ground clearance ad the standard Silverado. Now even know it's gone on the 2019 that front bumper hangs so low not only does it look bad I would end up ripping that piece off. I means it's a nice well crafted truck and still not as bad as the new auto start stop f150. Toyota is like an old dog it takes a beating and comes back for more.

Problem was something was always going wrong and it was in the shop so often I was on a first name basis with the service writer. My conscience would not let me sell it to someone else in a private sale. Traded for a Toyota which performs just as well and other than routine maintaince never goes to the shop.

    • @trunks817
      @trunks817 7 лет назад +3

      the DSSV offroad suspension cuts into the towing capacity. I guess pick your poison, Do you want the most extreme offroad factory truck or do you want something that can tow 7500lbs? if you need 2500 more lbs of towing go for the z71, but the z71 doesn't have dual locking diffs or suspension articulation that can do extreme offroading like rock crawling and such.

    • @PatrickRich
      @PatrickRich 7 лет назад +1

      Thats the dealbreak bit. Not so much the towing but the payload. This this is prime to be a long range touring dream, but they chose speed over capability and I need more the later and less the former. Its a shame too, because it has everything else going for it. Sure you could spend 42 grand then rip out the suspension to bring the capacity back but then you are talking about a very expensive truck...so much that I could get a lesser version and build it up myself for less.

    Not going to lie, I've never been a fan of Toyota's product, but the Tacoma TRD Pro is the nicest midsize truck on the market. This is coming from someone who only drives GM products because my father and uncles worked there for 30 years each, so I'm a bit biased. With that said, I find GM can't seem to get the proportions right on their midsize trucks - which is why I went full size with the Silverado. The Tacoma has the straight lines that I like on full size trucks. With the new 2019 Ford Ranger though... tough to say which would get my business.

      Toyota built the best reputation for dependability in the 1970s to the 1990's. However the reliability difference between a Toyota and a chevy/Ford truck is almost nil. The vehicle most likely to reach 200K miles according to current vehicle registrations? #1 F250. #2. Ford Expedition. Go ahead and google it. The dependability issue was an issue 20 years ago. Today with cars built by robots it's a Non issue. My last Ford truck had 190K before I sold it. Ran perfectly with plenty of power. No issues just regular maintenance.

    The Colorado is so great that Chevrolet discontinued sales of that POS in the USA for several years because they couldn't compete with Tacoma. Tacoma sales more than Colorado, Canyon & Frontier combined. The Tacoma owns over 60% of the mid-size truck market & has the highest resale value out of any vehicle on the planet. That's because it's the best mid-sized truck on the planet.

    I feel like you were very strategic in omitting details like the fact that the Tacoma has a rear locker (only mentioning it in passing) and the fact that the ZR2 starts cheaper because the TRD is only offered as a quad cab, where the ZR2 is offered in an extended cab. If you compare apples to apples the ZR2 starts at $42,620

    Kind of funny he states the Chevy's front wheels stay straight, around the 7:45 minute point, but the video clearly shows the front wheels dodging left and right in the video to keep the vehicle straight. Might ought not to have shown a clip of the front tires as he said that one. My 2015 Tacoma really is planted. It doesn't ever feel likes it's floating on the highway. I tow a very heavy motorcycle trailer with a big tool box on it and my Harley. Over 2,000 lbs and I never even feel it back there and I travel all over the US as a travel nurse. I even took it through the Vermont mountains without a hiccup. But I do have that big 4 liter V6, which I wish Toyota had kept, but bumped up the numbers in it. The reason I bought it instead of the '16 was for that engine.

What would be really nice is a 7 speed with a granny low ! Remember when 4wd's had a low gear that you would skip when you weren't pulling houses down the road ? The shift knob could read, L-1-2-3-4-5-OD-R. Kinda like bow ties of yore. i

    The Ford Raptor is not the "bar" setter for offroading. It's wide. It's got a ridiculously low payload and it's not all that efficient. It's good for running through open desert roads and that's about it.
    The Tacoma TRD and ZR2 are designed, and are certainly more practical, for offroading. You don't need lots of power for technical offroading and/or overlanding. You need decent power delivery and efficiency. Both the ZR2 and TRD provide that to varying degrees.
    I really wish the OEM's would stop listening to self-proclaimed truck enthusiasts who keep demanding more power and jumping capabilities....that's not what offroading is about and you're ruining the market for those of us who want a real truck instead of a wanna-be desert-runner.

      Kal P I’ve been saying this forever. Everyone saying “Put a V8 in it! Put a V8 in it!” WHY? To tow? No one buying these trucks uses them on a regular basis to tow. That’s what a full size is for. I bought a ZR2 because I want to off road, not pull a horse trailer.

  • @kevinvoyer5053
    @kevinvoyer5053 4 года назад

    Ok I’m on my second Colorado and could not be happier. The first was a 2016, Ext Cab,4x4, V6, we used for 4 years and 6 months, putting 56,000 miles on it, with at least 20,000 of that towing a 22’,4,000 lbs travel trailer. Flawlessly on the flats an Smokey Mountains, Green Mountans, Adirondack Mountains, as far North as Bar Harbor ME, and South as Key West FL. But after we both retired from mass to Florida and needed only one vehicle, we traded the Ext Cab in on a Crew Cab, we wanted a new Gladiator, but I did not like the price ,steering, ride and handling, especially compared with the Colorado, or power. I tested a Ranger FX4 an loved the power an trans, but not the ride or brakes and fit&finish. So we ended up with a 2019 Colorado Crew Cab 4x4, V6, W/T that’s loaded with everything I need an wanted. If I were to buy for off road? I’d get the V6, with the Bison bumpers and skid plates! I was able to get the skid plates from the dealer on mine and removed the dam dam. But now we tow a new 2020 Cherokee Grey Wolf 24 JS! That weighs just about 4,700 empty, 5,400 lbs ready to go with empty gray an black tanks, with 1/3 fresh water tank, just for flushing if there are no hook ups only. The Colorado does a great job! Good luck have fun and stay safe and healthy!
