I had the cassette as a kid but not the comic. It's so weird to finally see the visuals that go with it. I vividly remember hearing the line "COME TO PAPA, DADDY NEEDS A NEW ADJUSTABLE WRENCH SET"

I swear that the Pihrahna plant girl is voiced by Grey DeLisle. She was doing voice acting in the 90's as far as I'm aware so the timeline fits.
Sure sounds like her. She didn't get big work until the late 90s so I wouldn't be surprised if she did this since it was in 91

I don't hear it at all, even with the voice she's doing.
Both the date and location are off for Grey DeLisle to have done any work on this. Her official website states she started voice acting in 1996 and this cassette carries a copyright date on 1991. The cassette also credits the production to a Radio Arts Productions, Inc. Upon Googling that name I see a number of audiobooks also released by Random House around the same timeframe as this cassette (1988-1991) which carry a Radio Arts Productions credit alongside a Charles Potter credited as a producer at that company. Googling Potter's name along with the company's gets results with a New York City address. I can find a reference to an interview with DeLisle about briefly attempting a music career in New York, but nothing about ever working for an audiobook company.
These are really fun. They remind of when my teacher would read us stories and some of us would bring in comics for her to read.
Also I find it interesting that everyone seems to resemble their game/manual artwork, but Bowser uses his Super Show design
The reason there are mushroom people that look different than Toad is because the mushrooms, fireflowers, and stars were originally supposed to be sentient residents of the mushroom kingdom. The SMB instruction book explains that when you hit a block you're rescuing a mushroom resident who rewards you by giving you super powers when you touch them. Since all of this was dropped early on along with Toadstool King, they're now just regular mushrooms that Mario eats.
They have eyes now, though, so that does imply some degree of intelligence, though probably not sentience. And even still, Mario never actually _eats_ them; he just comes into contact with one and gets a power-up, so I'd say that idea potentially still holds true, to some degree.
Yeah, the powerups aren't seen as 'people', but they are undoubtedly living creatures, to some extent, with facial features plus the ability to move autonomously. Even as recent as Bowser's Fury we see that the Giga Bells can apparently speak, so clearly some powerups _do_ possess a level of sentience.

I'm a sucker for that time frame in the late 80s and early 90s when Nintendo were licensing out Mario like mad to companies like DiC and Valiant, and somehow I never knew these tapes even existed

Wow! I had this as a kid, matter of fact I still do. I used to listen to it over and over again. I even had Mario books where you chose your path and could get different endings and some of the “game over” pages were kind scary.(or I was just a scared kid lol) It’s great to see this again and see more people find out about it!

The cassettes are strangely inclusive for the blind, describing everything that's going on.
This was a great stream to sleep to for that reason as well, like a bedtime story
I had some cassettes that did this. It's in case you misplaced the book, you can still enjoy it without the book.

Vinny reading the cut Mario movie scripts was one of my favorite segments, so this'll be good. Vinny should look at lost or obscure media more often, even if it can't be Mario flavored.

I was genuinely surprised how soon of a response sending this in to Vinny had for some Sunday content. Glad to have been there for it. Fun fact about this, the people that did the voiceovers on this comic also were the ones that did three of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle comic audiobooks as well with the same narrator. Not much else is known about the cassette producer, but still worth the listen for something that’s been under the radar for many years. At least one of the voice actors that are regulars of the early Random House production group are Larry Robinson and possibly Lionel Wilson.

Whooa, seeing this just unlocked a whole bunch of memories from decades ago. I used to listen to this in my sister's room while she was at work since she had the nice casette player.
This was so fun. It made me listen to the cassette tape narration of the 1993 Super Mario Movie(yes, that's a thing and none of the actors reprise their roles)

Anyone ever seen that Bowser Flash animation Ignorance is Bliss based on this tape? It had one of the coolest Princess Peach designs ever. Super pointy and just done with everyone.

Man as a kid i had one of these I remember the one with the flying carpets and hair metal Peach. This is nuts to see vin dig up, I remember a local book store was closing down selling books and magazines for like half a dozen or something for a buck. I grabbed a hand full of comics and one of em was that super mario one.
I lost it somewhere over the years but it left a mark on my memory that I lost it , I still remember that story with peach getting floated up in the sky and having censored swearing

Man, that's one of the rare times I've ever seen an official thing mistaking Birdo for Ostro outside of the Mario 2 game that had this error.
This video unlocked memories of listening to this and reading the comic as a kid. A nice hit of nostalgia.

Had this as a kid and recently bought the cassette and posted it to my channel a few months back as I couldn't find it uploaded at the time.
"Dirk Drainhead" is just the name Sponge went by before his downfall.
Yeah I had these old Nintendo magazines which had these comics + a bunch of others, I recall another one of these Dirk-Drainhead storylines where Luigi actually dresses up as him. As well as others comics including a Dr.Mario comic, multiple Zelda comics based on the Zelda cartoon, A Punch-Out comic, A captain N comic that actually has Samus as one of the main heroes, and this weird Super Mario Land comic where Mario and other characters from the Mario Land game including the main villain Tatanga travel into the real world through a Gameboy and interact with real humans, I remember this particularly funny scene where they show the bad guys human ally, this middle-aged man who hates Mario and spends his time getting him killed in his Gameboy Mario game out of spite.
Also as a additional note, I was able to get the audio and the videos out there for this upload of comic content thanks to Morgil. I did credit him with the text file read me of the upload folder but Vinny didn’t get to it

I think I experienced one of these when I was a kid, maybe 2003 or so. They only had one, I checked it out of my elementary school library. I think it was supposed to be the first one of these or something - part of it at least focused on the origins of the brothers. There were parts of it that had a very different art style before they end up in the Mushroom Kingdom, so I'm not sure if it's the same product or not, but there sure was a cassette with it.
There is something very cozy about these.

Birdo is likely referred to as Ostro due to an error in Mario 2 that got carried over. On the Mario 2 credits screen, Birdo and Ostro's names are transposed.

They're pronouncing directly as the italian slang "goombah". It's possible that either the script writer or the voice director assumed that "Goomba" was a misspelling.

I'm likely the only one to think this, but the Mushroom King looks a bit like King Nod, and Bowser sounds like Gorgious from Space Goofs
I'm shocked anyone who watches Vinny even knows who King Nod is, or anything from The Thief and the Cobbler. Unless you're thinking of a different King Nod.

Vinny showing this kind of took me back to my elementary school days, where at one point I had to go to "Safekey" for like 2 hours after school (and that eventually got replaced with the Boys & Girls Club that was literally down the street). Safekey was this afterschool thingy for kids that had parents that had to work past 3PM and also didn't trust buses (IE, me). I remember them snack times. Snacksssssss.
Anyway, one day in Safekey, they took us to a computer lab, and someone played a random episode of the super show on a big phat CRT monitor on a desk in the corner. I'm pretty sure that was my first exposure to the Mario super show. That was in like, 1999 or 2000.
I remember in the Boys & Girls Club era of my elementary school life, pestering mom to take me to a pawn shop, on the off chance I could find a N64 Gameshark to unlock all the funny impossible to unlock Perfect Dark cheats. I also remember playing Perfect Dark for many many hours, and trying to do all the firing range challenges, while feverishly waiting for the Gamecube to release.
I never did get that Gameshark (because the daft pawnshop c*****s closed early and I went home at like 6PM), but at least I can enter all the cheats I want with emulators.
Now this is the kind of quaxotic rarity items I enjoy Vinny diddling and devaluing with.
