There's a lot of good/fairly popular games that are made in gamemaker (risk of rain, katana zero, hyper light drifter, hotline miami, etc), like most engines the more work put into the game the less it looks like just generic engine assets, it's actually a moderately powerful engine in the right hands. It was fairly popular as a engine of choice for 2d games in that 2010-2019 era. (and still is to some degree, though godot ate most of it's lunch at this point) It's the curse of being easy to get started with though, because anyone can make a simple game in it most of the games you see with the gamemaker name are simple games made by beginners.

A part of me wishes he would play some obscure Godot games because of how popular the engine's getting right know. There's probably some real hidden gems like this out there made with it. 😂 (Unless he already has?)
Oh yeah, and fun fact: UFO 50 was made in Game Maker. I don't know if it's listed in the credits, but you can see it by looking at the game files (it's got the same structure GM exports to). It's not even split up into 51 individual games + a launcher app, it's all the same project file under the hood (except the audio for each game is a separate archive). Derek & Co managing to stay organized when making such a large project is genuinely impressive, GM doesn't really have encapsulation and it makes larger projects prone to become spaghetti.
With that Luigi and the Mansion game there's something deeply funny to me about the idea of making a Luigi's Mansion fan game and then using Resident Evil 1 music. What they didn't think there was any music from LM that was fitting? Did they think it was too predictable? Was it a joke? "This game also take place in spooky mansion. It fits."
Not to mention the fact that the mansion's layout was a scuffed version of the mansion in Resident Evil 1. Someone was definitely inspired, that's for sure.

Been into GameMaker since GM5, it's a fantastic 2D engine for beginners, especially nowadays, being free and all. Probably the easiest and most intuitive programming language I've ever seen, too - really easy to get into, but hard to master, hence the abundance of poorly-made projects. Though it completely lacks any 3D tools and features, so the fact that so many 3D and pseudo-3D engines were made over the years is kinda impressive.
