This is probably my favorite Disney villain song of all time; the way that the chorus's counterpoint acts as his inner conscience that he ultimately rejects - as he sings "It's not my fault / I'm not to blame / It is the gypsy girl / The witch who set this flame" the chorus is singing "Mea culpa / mea culpa / mea maxima culpa" (my fault, my fault, my most grievous fault"). This song vividly demonstrates the nature of sin: knowing that it's wrong and doing it anyway. Frollo embraces his lust for Esmeralda and the whole of Paris burns in his attempt to satisfy it.
Don't forget his dehumanization of her, his treatment of her also comes from his bigotry against Romani, he sees them as vermin, and therefore her as someone who's only act of agency could be tempting him to sin, rather than as a person.
I also just noticed that at the end, when Frollo sings "God have mercy on her, God have mercy on me," the chorus is singing "kyrie eleison" which is another really common line heard in church music and is literally "Lord have mercy." I love how that throw both of those in there.
In way it's good illustration of the difference of the "virtue" of men like Frollo and that of true virtue. Frollo's virtue is show to be mask to hide their inner weakness, it's kind of ironic that it is Esmeralda who shows true virtue (that of kindness to be exact).
Such excellent analysis!
I farted once on the set of blue lagoon...
The story of how one simp nearly destroyed Paris. 🔥
nice
Canon: I finally stopped heavy metal, after moving out of your house, of which I definitely lived in. #Lore
damn straight, nice.
you two are my favorite singers ever!!!!!!!!
Pure lore right here
I just can’t describe how ecstatic I am from the voice of this dude and from the realization that he is singing a song from my favorite musical. only the ghost of the opera remains and I'm yours forever😂
O rety, to byłoby cudowne 😍
you've put that thought in my head and now i need that to be reality it would be so good.
@@fujin657 we all have to wait for this to become a reality)
If he covers the phantom of the opera I will actually explode in a good way
I was about to come here and share my love for the song and the need for coverage of phantom of the opera and I see I am not alone. I would also explode with excitement.
Can we take a second to appreciate this masterpiece and the incredible interpretation of Colm? But above all the struggle of a native English speaker in pronouncing the "R" of Maria in Latin. Great job Colm!
I had to redo it a million times! 😂 Thank you!!!!!
@@ColmRMcGuinness I took latin for 5 years and I have never heard it any better than from you!
I just took four minutes and four seconds
I'm from a part of the US with a lot of Spanish speakers, so I have an unfair advantage with rolling my "r"s, lol
Why, is it difficult or something? 🧐
Bring on more Disney villain hits! This was awesome
Amen!
Bring on the irish trad/rock version of this
Be Prepared! - Just don't try to do it solo.
Scar song from lion king
The included Latin in the beginning, the gravel of Frollo, the backing vocals...everything is P E R F E C T I O N. Tony Jay would've been exceptionally proud
I've heard soooo many covers of this one, but this is the first one that captures the same dread as the original. You nailed it!
Have you heard Tomi P’s cover? He captures it well a cappella. Both are so amazing!
The Jonathan Young metal one is a banger too
I already knew about Colm's vocal skills, but here we see some actor's play as well. It's amazing that I definitely heard not a 20+ y.o. singer, but a significantly older character.
And did you see his facial expressions? It beautifully says pain and torment and wishes. This is straight up stage act in RUclips format.
@@impracticalnukeWell what better way to perform than to embody the emotions of the character you're singing for?
@@MrJJandJim I would like a musical or metal opera with colm, Peyton Parrish and Jonathan Young
Blasting out all of these Disney covers has been unexpected but damn if you haven't blown each one out of the water!
Can you please do "Be Prepared" from the Lion King next/soon? Also this piece you did is absolute Art!
Ohhhh BET! 🙏🙏🙏
@@ColmRMcGuinness Oh, that's going to be awesome!
You beat me to it!!! ❤
Please do that with peyton parrish
@@ColmRMcGuinness It's so cool that you do this! Perhaps maybe doing The Bells of Notre Dame would be cool? You definitely could do it.
As a lip reader, I really appreciate how good you are at matching your vocals with the mouthing in the timing and shaping. You would not believe how rare that is!!!
I mess up syncing on a bunch of videos, but this happened to be one of my better ones 😂
Cheers mate!
Are you saying he's lip synching? I can't tell if you're complimenting him or accusing him
@@ColmRMcGuinness Ile be honest of all of the covers of this song ive watched mate yours is the most deep in terms of bass and dark toned 8) honestly you dude have done this turely spot on so much that even the late Tony Jay himself would be proud.
@@gabesgames7261Mentioning synching isn’t an accusation. That’s literally the way music videos are made. Almost every music RUclipsr does their recording first and then creates a video to go with it.
@@SpaceNinja321 Wait really? Wild. What about if their singing into a visible mic?
This is incredibly good, Colm! I'd definitely pay good money to see you on stage as Frollo!
The quiet bit after the "Protect me, Maria" portion is honestly one of my favorites, because in both the movie AND the musical, it's the guard coming to tell Frollo that Esmerelda has escaped, right in the middle of him praying for deliverance.
He got exactly what he asked for: a divine rescue from the situation, and a chance to be a righteous man. He had it in the EXACT moment he'd wished, and still chose to throw it away because of his lust and fury, declaring instead "be mine or you will burn". It's such a fascinating part of the song's story!
God gave him deliverance, and he still threw it away. Far too relatable for all of us.
As my father (an Anglican priest) once told me, "the hardest part of asking something of God is accepting the answer may not be what you want to hear."
I like that this cover is very close exactly to the tempo and vibe of the original. there are no special frills or inserts that change the essence of the song, and there is, as for me, getting into character. a man confident in his rightness and impunity sings that a woman will belong to him and only him, and I believe this voice.
p.s. special thanks for the choir, I always love Colmpany!
This is my favorite disney song. It's VERY dark. The only real song darker than this one is the opening one of the Hunchback of Notre dame that basically talks about the end of the world as it goes up in flames and the guilty being judged to hell for eternity. Definitely kid's movie themes lol
LYRICS
Confiteor deo
Omnipotenti
Beatae Mariae
Semper virgini
Beato Michaeli archangelo
Sanctis apostolis
Omnibus sanctis
Beata Maria, you know I am a righteous man
Of my virtue I am justly proud (et tibit pater)
Beata Maria, you know I'm so much purer than
The common, vulgar, weak, licentious crowd (quia peccavi nimis)
Then tell me, Maria, why I see her dancing there?
Why her smoldering eyes still scorch my soul? (cogitatione)
I feel her, I see her
The sun caught in her raven hair
Is blazing in me out of all control (verb o et opere)
Like fire
Hellfire
This fire in my skin
This burning desire
Is turning me to sin
It's not my fault (mea culpa)
I'm not to blame (mea culpa)
It is the gypsy girl the witch who sent this flame (mea maxima culpa)
It's not my fault (mea culpa)
If in God's plan (mea culpa)
He made the Devil so much stronger than a man (mea maxima culpa)
Protect me, Maria
Don't let this siren cast her spell
Don't let her fire sear my flesh and bone
Destroy Esmeralda
And let her taste the fires of hell
Or else let her be mine and mine alone
Hellfire
Darkfire
Now gypsy, it's your turn
Choose me or your pyre
Be mine or you will burn
Kyrie eleison
God have mercy on her
Kyrie eleison
God have mercy on me
Kyrie eleison
But she will be mine
Or she will burn
If they ever do a live action version of this movie, they need to hire this man. That was absolutely amazing!!!
Or get this man on Broadway
Every time I hear a song of yours, I just think 'thank you'. Thank you for sharing your talents, for the work it has to take to do all this, and for taking the risks you do across so many songs.
It's awesome.
If you're looking for other songs...I'd love to see...every song from Aladdin :D
I know I already commented, but... Everyone wants to cover Hellfire, but no one wants to cover The Bells. Like, come on. That's a literal banger y'all.
Wow Colm! Your voice has only grown and gotten a wider range that you sound like you've been able to support strongly! Well placed into this powerful song, so thank you!
Thank’n you, brother bear! Gotta work on some more pronunciation stuff down the line but we’re getting there! 🙏
It's honestly a joy watching the evolution of your vocal and cinematic talents over time. They've aways been top notch and you keep honing your craft to higher and higher levels. Good on ya!😊
Oh god your voice is perfect for this song…
Mann love the coloured lights reflecting his state of temptation
Hear me out: a new version of this where Colm is Frollo, but Jonathan Young and Peter Hollens are the backup singers and chorus.
Absolute chills, nothing else describes it all
My singing teacher: what are your goals for this class?
Me: to be able to sing Hellfire in key
Alroght lad. This was amazing. Definetly on of the best covers I've heard in a while
Amazing cover! Might just be my favorite version of this song. The amount of content you put out is just incredible and at such a high level I’m amazed at how fast you put these out.
Thanks so much, mate! I was up late doing this one! The orchestral backing tracks take way more time
@@ColmRMcGuinness Definatly one of Disney's Darkest masterpiece of a song only you mate have made this even more darker with ur vocal toned skills :3
Great cover! This is why I think Frollo is the most insane villain ever written. I don't know any other villain who comes even close to this.
i agree Frollo is def one of the evilest and most controversial Disney villains ever
just the opening knocked me speechless since most people when doing covers for this song, forget the latin from the clergy at the start. that little detail alone made me so happy and rekindles my love of the latin language. keep it up, Colm!!!!
The metal version in cue yet? 👀
Honestly, I would listen to Gregorian Chants by you all day every day, lord above it's amazing
So glad I've now been made aware of just how much my life needed this cover
If they do a live action, I hope you are their Frollo. Nailed this shit.
This is in my top 3 favorite Disney songs- the themes are really complex and the composition itself is gorgeous. Thank you!!!
Holy smokes. That was the most chilling version I’ve ever heard
the mix of different aspects of your voice is just :chefs kiss: 🤌!
Your vocal flips are so scary here, I hear this as frollo and demonic fighting against each other, LOVE it
I-mate. MATE. Disney NEEDS to have you voice a charachter! Like I lost it at this! One of the best covers I've ever heard! (And I thought that the song couldn't get more menacing !💀)
colm's fervor in his performance awakens even in me the sweetly painful burning desire to desire Esmeralda.
Gives this man a place of worship where he may warm God's heart
frollo sounds like a giga chad in this one lol
Thank you for this amazing cover. It gave me goosebumps! 😊
This is a pure delight. I love it so much. Such amazing control and power in your voice! May I humbly suggest "Achilles Come Down" for the challenge of the self-duet? I would love to hear Colm and Evil Colm battle!
"Morning sir. Are you feeling all right?"
"I had a little trouble with the fireplace."
One of the all time greatest songs from one of Disney's greatest animated movies sung by one of the greatest voices? Ironically this was a match made in heaven
I hope that saying that this version has AT LEAST as much emotions as Tommy Jay's will express how much I love it.
I'm in awe of Colm's performance. Having seen the movie and heard Tony Jay singing this, it's uncanny how Colm was able to sing this in the same bass register!!! 🤯
Really love that baritone!
He took a Disney song that give people intense chills & made it his own , making it even more chilling
I now have two versions of this song that blow my mind every time I hear them. Colm this is CRAZY GOOD.
The tingles be strong and the bass is powerful...
Truly inspirational.
I’ve always loved how Colm films his performances. He makes sure the audience sees the effort needed, he shows how much physicality is required to manipulate one’s voice and to perform in keys that are not your natural state. Seeing the physical side of the performance, literally being able to see his throat and the interior of his mouth as the muscles fluctuate and contort to produce his unique sound; it is both intimate as well as bold, the man bares all and proves that he is natural talent, he removes all doubt. Colm McGuinness is a true gift full stop.
Breathtaking arrangement Cap'n 🔥🔥🔥 ...and how on earth did you not dislocate your jaw in that surprisingly effective impersonation?😂
You’ve clearly never seen me almost dislocate my jaw to eat quad burgers. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
@@ColmRMcGuinnessGood Lord, man!
Thank you for your amazing gift!!! You are absolutely EPIC!!!
Amazing!😍 Thank you,for cover this!
How dark of a place does one have to go to get that growl in their voice, love it, keep up the good work Colm
For years this has been my favorite Disney villain song for reasons several others here have said already. Your version, sir, brought such a power to it like I've never heard before. I have chills so hard I'm actually shaking! Bravissimo!
That was genuinely terrifying. Now I had really wished I had watched this movie.
Another amazing song. Can't believe how quick you put these out.
Not the song I expected, but an epic cover! It would be amazing if you did a version of this song in Latin like ScorpioMartianus did here on RUclips.
So glad to see you cover this
At last, the Greatest song of all Disney Villains, given new life in the voice that makes ground quake and trees tremble! Perfect work Colm!
THIS IS SO COOL!!!!!!!
Not only do you do a bang up job singing the song, you also capture the proud, haughty, 'holier than thou' arrogance of Frollo so well!!
I would KILL to hear this man sing "Invincible" or "Arthas My son" From World of Warcraft in his voice...
Somthing I love about this song is the idea of lust overcoming someone’s will. A bit of tweaking and it could be about a hero being tempted but a dark love interest
I hear the song, strongly emotive and powerful, as was the original, but with your own grit added. I also see storytelling in your presentation of this tormented man failing to reconcile his feelings with his faith, turning into the devil as he "falls to the darkside." Powerful stage performance on your part.
Jesus that voice!!!!!! Great cover!!!!!!
Your vocal tone is just PERFECT for this. I had chills...
He has the voice of a monster and that's a compliment
This is like if angels and demons decided to to get along and make an epic vid
What I wouldn't give to see a power metal duet between this guy and Jonathan Young
Ask and you shall receive. They did Misty Mountains Cold. Even better, Peyton Parrish joined in.
Them little growls at the end of every breath really make the song for me
We all know you have an incredible vocal range, but listening to you move up and down through the octaves with such skill in this song was incredible! Love this cover, thank you so much for sharing it!
Instantly my favorite version of this song. Absolutely incredible!
I am both terrified and madly in love.
Subscribing immediately.
Not me, up at midnight, stumbling upon this and reenacting the entire sequence in front of my mirror. Simply amazing! I have chills!
This gave me goosebumps all over. Holy crap. This has always been one of my favorite Disney songs, it's just has amazing vocals and music, and you've captured and improved on it so tremendously well!
One of my favorite villain songs and masterfully done. Glad you song the prayer at the start, it sets up the tone and acts as a counter point to frollo and is usually missed.
Oh my god, I feel you on the villain part
Notredame it was one of my favorite disney films till now, hear this flame my heart soooo high, holy molly and the light's color switching ♥♥
Волосы дыбом, мурашки по коже😂
The greatest villain song of Disney, thank you for your performance, it gives me goosebumps
Showed this video to a friend who likes Disney... she said "wow, I didn't know he was in that movie!"
Just that good...
Never knew I needed this till I heard it, now im addicted
The song of the pervy pope sniffing the handkerchief xD. Thats legit the first thing that came to mind when i saw this song for the first time when i was little
The facial contortions were no joke! This is what comitting to the role looks like! 🔥 🔥 🔥
I love it when you do your character voices! This is great ❤
Holy Colm this cover is on another level love this one. Really good work :)
Amazing as usual, great work.
I'm always incredibly hesitant to listen to any cover of this song. The late Tony Jay was my favorite voice actor of all time, this is my favorite Disney song, and I've never heard a version that does his voice justice.
Colm. YOU NAILED IT.
Absolutely stunning, Sir. Gave me absolute chills. Your music has always been a go-to for me, and you have never let me down! Never stop this amazing work you do. 🤍
I can definitely see a Hell's Coming With Me
Back when Disney made good movies.
Nice. Love to see you sing "Out There" from the movie
Damn is it good to here some Colm bass again. Another phenomenal cover from the master of all things music.
As far as songs from Disney went. This 1 always was my favorite.
Saw this and wondered how in the sanctified circles of suspicion how I haven't heard it yet. Then I saw the unpload date and and a single tear leaked from my vision orb
This song is still one of Disney’s best villain songs and still remains to this day.
"If a man boasts of his virtue, guard yourself and all those you hold dear."
Incredible, this one of my absolute favorite disney songs, i would love to hear you do The Bells of Notre Dame and The Court of Miracles.
Just want to say good job, really. Hellfire is one of my favorite villain songs for its ability to invoke a unique type of emotion. However, I just got done listening to half a dozen versions of this song seeing if any others can catch the essence of the original, including other languages. The dude singing this rocks, best I heard out of the search and I'm going to stop my search here satisfied.
