Because of this and because of the huge number of Australian fans, Australia eventually got invited as a guest performer. However, while this was intended as a onetime thing, they were just kind of allowed to stick around, because people liked it a lot. So in short: you guys get to compete, because we like you and want you to party with us (In case I got any details wrong, forgive me, these are just the broad strokes how I remember them off the top of my head, so take it with a grain of salt)
Meanwhile they let America participate one (1) single time, and apparently we were SO heinous that not only are we banned for all eternity from participating (as a contestant OR voting) ever again, we're not even allowed to _watch_ Eurovision live ever again. American IP addresses are banned for the duration of the event, European VPN providers are ordered to temporarily block American users, any restreamers get their accounts copyright-struck out of existence (the kind of strikes that cost you _your entire Google Account_ and not just your youtube account)... They'd stop us from knowing about Eurovision even _happening_ if they could, at least until a month after it happens...

Fun fact: the fact that Australia invented Wi-Fi is exactly why theirs is worse. The countries that had certain infrastructures a long time ago generally haven’t updated them fully but countries that put things like internet in more recently are likely to have installed a more modern version to start with. I live in the uk but I’m in a poorer area and we cannot get good internet that doesn’t constantly drop out or has even the basic kind of speeds you need for anything these days, because apparently no company wants to spend money to upgrade the cables etc in an area where people generally can’t afford to pay for the more expensive internet packages. We don’t have fibre internet so it still comes down really old telephone wires, so outdated and worn out that they can’t even give us a clear phone line (old fashioned landlines), so they really struggle with the internet! We had technicians out several times in the last year and (not that I know anything about it all so I’m just repeating what they said) they told us the boxes near us were a mess and they literally couldn’t find a well functioning cable in there. Even people who live not that far from us have way better internet because they have fibre cables so it’s been a really good demonstration for us of how much difference the age of the equipment makes to the quality of service you can get

We had the transportable school rooms ADDED onto my junior high in SMALL TOWN ALBERTA, I remember them being to colder rooms… and it gets to -25 C so easy in winter, had to wear the jackets in the classroom some days

I learnt to swim at the Harold Holt less than 5 years after his drowning. It was the place to be in summer for us teens in the late 70s early 80s. A lot of good memories there.
