Jack, since you asked why you guys are allowed to compete in Eurovision: from my understanding, Australia at some point became an associated member of the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) because Eurovision was so popular there. Because of this and because of the huge number of Australian fans, Australia eventually got invited as a guest performer. However, while this was intended as a onetime thing, they were just kind of allowed to stick around, because people liked it a lot.
So in short: you guys get to compete, because we like you and want you to party with us
(In case I got any details wrong, forgive me, these are just the broad strokes how I remember them off the top of my head, so take it with a grain of salt)

Meanwhile they let America participate one (1) single time, and apparently we were SO heinous that not only are we banned for all eternity from participating (as a contestant OR voting) ever again, we're not even allowed to _watch_ Eurovision live ever again. American IP addresses are banned for the duration of the event, European VPN providers are ordered to temporarily block American users, any restreamers get their accounts copyright-struck out of existence (the kind of strikes that cost you _your entire Google Account_ and not just your youtube account)... They'd stop us from knowing about Eurovision even _happening_ if they could, at least until a month after it happens...

Fun fact: the fact that Australia invented Wi-Fi is exactly why theirs is worse. The countries that had certain infrastructures a long time ago generally haven’t updated them fully but countries that put things like internet in more recently are likely to have installed a more modern version to start with.
I live in the uk but I’m in a poorer area and we cannot get good internet that doesn’t constantly drop out or has even the basic kind of speeds you need for anything these days, because apparently no company wants to spend money to upgrade the cables etc in an area where people generally can’t afford to pay for the more expensive internet packages.
We don’t have fibre internet so it still comes down really old telephone wires, so outdated and worn out that they can’t even give us a clear phone line (old fashioned landlines), so they really struggle with the internet! We had technicians out several times in the last year and (not that I know anything about it all so I’m just repeating what they said) they told us the boxes near us were a mess and they literally couldn’t find a well functioning cable in there.
Even people who live not that far from us have way better internet because they have fibre cables so it’s been a really good demonstration for us of how much difference the age of the equipment makes to the quality of service you can get

*True Story* Back in I think '04 in the Auran Trains IRC chat room we met this guy living in Aus who used to live in England. He was wanting to do game review videos but wanted some input on how to go about it and we came up with a plan. He didn't even have his own computer capable of recording stuff.
Telstra bandwidth costs were the SERIOUS consideration. Avoiding pauses of any kind for time and to keep from losing the attention of a gamer, simple color count and representation that was highly compression friendly so people could still see what it was at 240p if need be. Loud banging music to let the viewer know the vid had finished queuing and also at the end to let people know it was over. This meant that he could also cut out shapes for characters and things, print out anything he really needed and stop-motion record his first review video to shop it around.
Zero Punctuation was born! The ultimate Telstra meme!

Gosh, I feel old with the book reference. Back in my day it was Paul Jennings vs Morris Gleitzman. They also co-wrote 2 book series together (Wicked, and Deadly) which were really good.

Just FYI, Japan did actually bomb Darwin, they basically leveled it in a three-wave bombing run, sunk several ships and annihilated the runway. Seems most people have no idea that happened.

One time I went to an ANZAC march, and they didn't even do the proper march. They just walked in a small circle, then made as stand around for half and hour. But the other time I did it it was vise versa.

If you go to the Valley or Outer Brisbane you will find at least 14 pubs looking exactly like that. Also, they will 100% contain screens with KENO, some random ass cricket match over in Belgium or somewhere and finally, NFL. I have no clue why but we always seem to watch the NFL

I learnt to swim at the Harold Holt less than 5 years after his drowning. It was the place to be in summer for us teens in the late 70s early 80s. A lot of good memories there.
