  • Chinese people are hospitable by nature, and as a foreigner in China, you will always notice how warm people are to you. Travelling around China, you will have a good experience in smaller areas as people will invite you to their homes for meals, etc..
So, what exactly is it that I love about Chinese Hospitality? What makes it unique...

When I was in college I worked as a pizza delivery dude out here in the U.S. And in my town at least there was one universal truth about the customers - the poorer the house/neighborhood, the better tips. Mansions - I got nothing, no tips, and demanding free pizzas because you were delayed by their security gates they never gave you the code for, playing games w/you just so they can get a free pizza(s), all while having a swimming pool moat around their house. RV park, on the other hand - best tips of 'em all. So perhaps its less a cultural thing and more a universal truth. After all, you really appreciate the importance of generosity when you're poor and you have at times depended on it. Whereas if you're rich, people supposedly giving you things are often just trying to ingratiate themselves w/you in order to 'get in good' w/you, which probably makes you knowingly suspicious, and unknowingly devalue generosity in general (no idea as to the why, just speculating, but it was a phenomenon I witnessed regardless of the why). Plus, poor people living in an RV park might have been or even currently be a pizza driver and simply have a better understanding of your position and reliance on tips. Easier to have empathy for a situation you have actually experienced yourself after all.

    Wonderful video,
I do not know how it is in South Africa. Every place I have been as soon as you leave the major cities everyone tends to be very hospitable. Tours France, Phuket Thailand, Nira Japan, Kenya was amazing you could not go to someones house without them cooking for you. Even in the Southern United States. I say this as a 205 pound 6.5 foot tall black man. I am always amazed at how wonderful and giving people that do not even know you can be. I knew 1 person in Japan. When I left I knew 10. Three would come to visit me in the States. In Tours France I knew no one. 24 hours later I was moving with 20 people. It is funny because I am so guarded in the states. I always try to help out someone that cant speak english. I have been in that situation so many times in my travels.

I'm a mixed-race South African from European, Asian, and African origin, and since I am a person of a multi-ethnic background I do have the unique advantage over many other foreigners living in China, because I can blend in a lot easier with people from different ethnic groups. Nevertheless Winston, I do really like your informative videos on China whether it is positive or negative observations from your own personal experience. I don`t like political correctness, that's why I like you for being honest about your thoughts and feelings about China. I was trained as an Engineer in the oil & gas industry in France and the U.S.A. and I had worked in 4 countries in the oil & gas industry in Africa. I had worked and lived with people of all kinds of nationalities, religions, and races, and traveled to at least 12 different countries. I had been traveling in and out of China since 2009, and I had met my wife in China while I had lived in America. I had traveled all the way from Texas, and met my wife in Tianjin in 2011, and proposed to her on the Great Wall of China in 2012, and we got married in Tianjin in 2014. My wife and I had lived in Cape Town only for 9 months after we got married, and then we had decided to leave South Africa for good so we are presently living in Tianjin since 2015. I don`t miss South Africa at all, because both my parents had already died in South Africa even long before I got married in China. I love China so I have more positive things than negative things to say about Chinese people and this country in general. We are looking forward to moving down to Shenzhen in 2018 and grow our export business in the solar industry. Hopefully we do get a chance to meet in Shenzhen next year.

One thing that I will never forget, about 10 years ago I was in Mecca with two friends during the Hajj (Pilgrimage) and as part of the Hajj we had to spend the night in a open place called Muzdalifa, our sleeping bags were in our bus that broke earlier that day so we found ourselves without our sleeping bags that night, so we began searching for some cardboard boxes to sleep over, while we were doing that a very poor Pakistani man thought we were looking for food in the trash so he took the only food he had and offered it to us. I was very moved and almost wasn't able to thank him (I don't know the right expression in english but in portuguese we say "estar com um nó na garganta" which literally means to have a knot in the throat, an expression used when we are so moved and we feel like there is a knot that stops us from even talking)

All over the world, the indigenes are always nice. Even the officials , if you are to meet them individually, are nice people. It is when ' officiallity' get involved, that is when people get nasty.
Bang on. I was going to say that in my comment, and forgot. It is usually the poorest that share. Noticed that in my travels all over the world, especially in Mexico, where I see super kindness off the touristy paths

    you make china sound lovely.
i can't speak for the whole country but if you ever visit canada i can assure you that the people here are very similar with the hospitality.
the largest difference is that here we are generally a lot wealthier so it is perhaps not as big a deal for us to give strangers a meal.
many times though, especially in the winter, if someone gets stuck the neighbors will come out to help get you unstuck, and you may well find yourself enjoying a warm home cooked meal.
i would really hope this sort of hospitality is more common than you might think, i have experienced it often in my own travels around europe and south east asia. not so much in the usa though i am sure it happens there too.

Absolutely! I was always most moved by the hospitality of poor people who did not know me. It also made taking walks around my house fun when the poor neighbors and I would start to recognize each other and exchange daily pleasantries. Sometimes at the market people would give me things for free. Other times, we would actually negotiate backwards - they would tell me it was free, and I would say how about 5 yuan, and they'd say "No way! Too much!" And we'd go back and forth until I end up giving them 1 or 2 yuan! Everyone laughed and enjoyed the spectacle!

Once I was travelling with a friend in Bangkok. We were looking for the offices of a Christian organisation where I was supposed to meet some people, but we got lost. I saw a taxi stand and said why not try asking a taxi driver? They'll probably know where it is. We walked over and asked the first cab driver we saw. He only spoke a few words of English, but we discovered he was Chinese, and spoke the same dialect as my friend. As it turned out, he was even from the same area that her family originated from. From that moment on, he happily offered his services as our chauffeur, tour guide and interpreter for the rest of our week-long stay in Bangkok! He translated everything from Thai to Chinese, which my friend in turn translated into German for me. When he drove us to the airport for our flight to Singapore, I wanted to give him something for all his trouble, but my friend said that would be a great dishonour, as he had insisted doing all this for free. It was one of the most amazing trips I have ever had, and I'll be forever grateful for his incredible hospitality!

I am not exactly sure how to express this without sounding folksy and like a hipster wannabe. Having farmed, it is a great part of your makeup to share. It builds the best things about humanity. When you know how difficult it is to extract everything that you need directly from the environment around you, that informs how precious life is and the relationships that we have with our sphere of influence. It is not an exchange rate; it is a commitment. To not share is something of a sin against the land. That is true hospitality.

Hey Winston, just wanna say I love watching your videos. I lived in China myself for six months and every time I see a video of yours I want to go back.
I am curious though, if it's not too rude, but how do you make a living out there? I'm under the impression you make your living through RUclips, but is that it?
    Cheers!

Hi Winston, I just start to look your video "the Downside of Chinese hospitality" and I have one advice. The shoot in your car is a good idea, but please don't do it on the highway. The background is moving toooo fast, and it's uncomfortable to look.
Thanks again for your always good content, and as always stay awesome !!

Me , my son and my wife was in Haikou when the storm hit, it was an experience I do not wish to try again.
The house we lived in was shaking more than two days, and how the city looked afterwards was not pretty.
street lighting low down in many places, the same with trees and other things. . Many tiles of the houses was shattered on the streets everywhere. . . once is enough, now I know!

thanks for making these videos, I never had any desire to go there before your videos. Now I kind of do, but first I have to finish exploring my own country, the U.S. for me anyway might take a lifetime. Thank you for the knowledge of current culture though as that's a hard to understand in writing or just in general. As an Irish/native American that has hung out with a bunch of different ethnic groups, I love trying to just figure out why people act the way they do.

Have you ever visited other countries? im a South american who now calls the US home, but i find out that every time you experience other countries/cultures, you learn even more about your own. There's no need to "finish exploring" the US first, in order to visit China, you can do both! Plus, I don't think a lifetime is enough to finish exploring either the US or the whole world. im 34 now and my goal is to have visited 28 countries by age 50, cheers

Hi Winston, as always love your videos, and hope you have a great time in USA!
I just wanted to say maybe consider Netflix for CSC. I've said this a couple times to C-Milk I believe + watched the show myself on Vimeo. It's just that no one watches Vimeo. Perhaps ask around in America if anyone uses Vimeo vs. Netflix. It's just the quality of your production is excellent, and Netflix could give you some really good organic reach (help it blow up).

what if you were to invite him to your home and you prepared a meal for him and he refused because he is rich and you are poorer, so he doesn't value your friendship. would that be rude of him?
so what is the problem with refusing him, why would that be rude if he would do the same to you?

My mother's grandpa went to china way back and got mugged and assaulted in the streets of a rural area with everything stolen except for his undies, he then walked towards the more populated area and started begging for money, a random passerby gave him enough money for clothes and a trip back to the airport. He asked for the stranger's address and bank details so that when he returned home, he will transfer the money back to him.
Back then both of them are average income wise not rich but not poor. My great grandpa then transfered money to the stranger every month when he returned to his home country even after his death. The stranger was pinning fliers of my g.grampa in china looking for that man whom he met with just words and a name describing/hinting about him and waited for 40 years. The situation came to light when he caught wind of a person with the same name died and was posted in social media which someone from the stranger's side found and my uncle was contacted by him which they went to china for a visit.
A few months later the stranger's grandson is marrying someone and we were all invited. During which we did not spend a single yuan there and got lots of free stuff.

'Face' is not always the most important aspect to Chinese people, while of course it is in some cases, but more often it's more complicated than simply saying 'face' is such an important thing, for example, very often, when Chinese peole invite you for a cup of tea, or a meal, they have just been polite (in CH Keqi) and expecting you to politely refuse.

As a Chinese, I feel this hospitality really tiring sometimes. Ever since young, Our parents had it drummed into us that if someone come by, we have to serve them meals, make sure they well treated. On the other hand, if we are the visitors, we have to avoid staying over for diner and troubling the others. So never visit at dining time. The same way goes to other situations as well. And it's more of a responsibility than out of genuine affections. Not necessarily just face. I did poorly, always end up staying over dining, receiving gifts, receiving money....

I enjoy your vids a lot and have been on a splurge recently. Great job. Gives us a fantastic insight into what is going on. Lots of great things to comment about, so fantastic job overall, but I still want to say a couple of words about the 2 on hospitality. I do agree that the one on the downside, while making very good points worth noting would indeed have been better without making the host look bad. I would suggest some editing. But I can see how that might have been unintentionally overlooked during speedy editing etc. More to the point about this one on the upside, I could not help thinking that you hit on one of the big points when it comes to hospitality given by poor people, which is was ironically put forth in your own comments about folks coming out of their houses afterward, and that is whether you have inadvertently changed the whole hospitality context by offering the money. IOW, has the system been adversely affected? Will it still be genuine if people start expecting money? Again, great job on the vids!

Very true; despite hijacking your time, people are very generous and would split the last piece of rice if it came down to it. The advantage goes to the tourist, who CAN turn down someone's invitation and not deal with the fallout. In fact, they are safer not accepting hospitality for reasons detailed on your Beijing scams video.

Interesting question. In my own travels I've done similar to you, given a sort of tip of amazing hospitality for those who care hardly afford it. But it has kept me up some nights since thinking while the individual act was positive, have I opened the door for these people to learn that travelers or westerns just toss money around as if it is nothing and also should be expected to pay more or for things locals would not. For example 10 years ago I lived in costa rica then went back for a wedding only 3 years later and found many of the areas we spend most of our time were completely changed and now everything was two times more expensive and everyone wanted to take advantage of us as 'tourists'. It went from gracious acts as hosts mostly to just a terrible experience similar to being in a market where everything became a negotiation. Then again people discovering tourism as an economy is that so bad? I certainly don't have the answers...
