You just earned my subscription. I've been wondering and not using my Homelite 400 XL automatic for years because of a boiling gas issue. Now I know and will address the issue.. Thank you sir.
Great tips; getting the clutch off and flywheel removal! Another good tip: Keep your chain sharp so it makes shavings, not dust. This will keep your saw way cleaner.
Sorry about your finger, hopefully it's better by now. I have a Homelite Super XL and you answered a lot of questions by your video. Hope to get mine in shape before spring. Thanks again from Wisconsin.
i just picked up a really nice light blue metallic Super XL Automatic. In a few days, i'm picking up a really nice red one that has a bow bar on it. I'll definitely be watching your videos to learn about them. thanks in advance
Good video. I worked on these saws there very reliable. You can't take the drive case off even with those 5 bolts removed cause crank is locked in place by the bearing and some bearing retainer screws.
I have been examining my non working saws or parts saws and it looks like two new new pistons and maybe cylinders. My XL Automatic with chain break that I was hoping to run, has metal flakes in the engine case. I used an endoscope to look down the intake hole. I have a couple old pistons and one cylinder in my parts box. Maybe they will fit and maybe they were not already replaced on another saw. I was not going to keep the saw, giving it to Leon or you. But after watching you tear one down, I may yet restore it. When I inherited my Grandparents house and shop, I recall seeing a small box with a piston and rings in it. It may have been for a vintage Homelite since Grampy ran these, and Lombard. Think I can find it now, after being here 20 years! Hoping. This XL Auto will run, I test ran it years ago; but not now seeing metal flakes in the engine.
I think a expansion chamber be cool I have same saw just no fancy exhaust cover Just got through redoing mine. Has points I cleaned all that and sanded them, runs ok has low power on top end. Still seems like it’s miss firing. I set the H and L at 1 and 1 1/2.
Wow smitty that’s crazy can’t believe there’s so much to do just in that one saw thanks for the video buddy and oh man I didn’t know you got your hand hurt working on that saw hope you heal up fast buddy. Thanks again for taking that saw on for porting definitely can’t wait to see what it’s got in store. And wow that saw was dirty. Thanks for the video
Good video I find them very useful .I am going to replace the seals and bearings on a xl12 .I don't know how different the supper from the xl 12 the auto oiler ,its got to be close .any way thanks for the time to do this video I watch ya when I can
I am working on a Super XL Auto. It doesnt have the room to use the slick puller to remove flywheel. Where can I get a puller to do the job? Or at least a #12-24 x 3" bolts to use a puller of mine. Thanks for your video!
Thank you for this video! I have a Homelite Super XL that I have fully disassembled currently. What would you recommend for getting the carbon off and old paint off? I am looking to restore this saw :).
them tools will gitcha every time!-- lol! On the serious side, I have/use/work on 8 of these SXLAO's! Best model out there.I would like to see the RE-assembly of them. I have 1 apart as to your specs and it went well,--cept the screwdriver deal! I dodged that one! LOVED your video!!
I kno this is a sxl but I have a blue xl12 would the carb off a red xl12 work in it since they have different reeds my carb Is shot from last person that had it
Would keeping a sharp chain go a long way in minimizing crud build up, as using quality oil and keeping a good tune on her, taking her apart looks fairly extensive, but that's one of the reasons I love vintage saws they are definitely a labor of love!
It may minimize the crud a little bit because of the larger wood chips not sticking as much, but if you have an air compressor, it can be extremely helpful in keeping your saws clean, just make sure none is getting inside the engine, (intake and exhaust closed off)
Hello! I need help, by tapping he takes out pulleys to remove the disc from the electromagnet. I have bent the thread a little and now the nut doesn't fit. Do you know what type of thread it is? I have bought standard and fine Whitworth dies and they don't work, I think the Whitworth ones don't have the same thread pitch, thanks in advance. A greeting from Spain!
As long as it’s just a little bit on the end you should be able to take a file and clean up the issue by filing it into a taper. I have done that before. It will be difficult to get the nut started straight but it usually works.
I have a question for you. I am considering rebuilding Grandpa's old Super XL Automatic. It is seized up, no longer rotating, so will I be able to remove the flywheel at all?
Buenas yo no hablo inglés pero necesito comprar el cilindro y pistón con cojinetes y empaques de una homelite xl motosierra por cuanto de sale eso o cual es el precio espero su respuesta gracias vivo en Santiago de Veraguad República de Panamá
HOW do you know that the bearings and seals you purchase today, either NOS or parts made in CHINAMANVILLE will be trustworthy in the rebuild ?? I know the old production bearings were first class parts. Stuff one buys today is just a CRAPSHOOT. Nice video fella with down to earth information too. Peace v
You don’t really but still better than bad bearings. I picked up a case of new old stock a few years ago. I don’t think I will need to worry for a while.
I could hear the crank bearing was bad it was rough and sounded like sandpaper there is a trick 2 putting needle bearings in U have 2 use grease on them so they will stay in place and won't fall out the crankshaft U use a block of wood 2 help get the out of the crankshaft OMG 3 25 2O23
Rewatching this series. You are the one who got me bit by the HomeLite bug lol😂
Same here...I'm actually watching this to know how to disassemble one ...only needs seals but I wanna know it all haha
I'm really sorry forry for your pain. But I did benefit for the clear instruction. Thank you and God bless and heal you, brother.
Glad it helped
Thanks for the video! Just bought a blue one for 50 bucks. This is beyond helpful
Glad I could help!
Bless you Smitty for sharing your wisdom with us!!!
Thanks for listening

Good video. A lot of blood sweat and tears went into it. Sorry, couldn't resist.
Great Video!the when i had a problem with coil and flywheels on mine i guess i was trying to use the prestolite flywheel with the modern coil....
Yes they must match to work correctly, Phelon / Phelon, or Wico/ prestolite/ Wico prestolite
Great vid smitty 👍
Thanks buddy!
Great video. Question. Does the clutch have to be removed to pull the flywheel?
I think a expansion chamber be cool

This is what I like. Thanks Smitty. This should be a runner, a few drops of blood per engine is the secret recipe.

@@Smittyschainsaws no problem buddy
Great video, are the steps similar on a xl 103? Thank you in advance!
Similar but some things are different.
Good stuff!

Long soak in gas for carbon. The paint is harder without a paint stripper.
I have that saw and a blue one ,,,,Having trouble with manual trigger hold/release
The trigger probably needs replaced.

Coming in a future video.
Does it say "Super" on the tag? I have an XL Automatic. I think the Supers are 58cc.
Thanks for the video. I am working on my dad's super xl. I am thinking about rebuilding it. It has 110 psi compression, is that low for a homelite?
To low for me. I like 130 at the least.
@@Smittyschainsaws, thank you
I kno this is a sxl but I have a blue xl12 would the carb off a red xl12 work in it since they have different reeds my carb Is shot from last person that had it
If the bolts line up, give it a shot
I wish i found you yesterday. I turned nut clockwise on chain sprocket and I think I broke something in side. can it be fixed.
Probably broke something inside the starter. Should be fixable.

Hello, I found two of these saws, one has a good compression of 150psi and the other is like 63 psi. Were Can I buy the seals and barrings at?
Leon is a good source
Thanks 😎

I still don’t have feeling in that finger tip.
I have a question for you. I am considering rebuilding Grandpa's old Super XL Automatic. It is seized up, no longer rotating, so will I be able to remove the flywheel at all?
Yup. It’s probably going to be a difficult build replacing bearings and everything. Might need a parts saw.
I just bought one of these how much should it cost to have someone tear down the saw like this and overhaul it for me?
It’s expensive. Not really worth the effort to pay someone else to do it.
What size Allen is it for the connecting rod bolts?
I should have watched this before I just tore mine apart lol. This would have helped
Lol!
so, the exhaust on mine was too rusted up so do you know where I could find one

I have that saw. Need a fuel pump diaphragm for carburetor.
Nice
I have the same and no spark at all what i can do?
Figure out if it’s points or coil
Hi Smitty!!😀😀
How's the finger doing??
Hopefully it's feeling better.
Take care my friend!!😀😀

As good as can be with a hole in your finger.
