Good on Michael Buble for improvising along. What Colbert maybe doesn't realize, is that song is firmly a Canadian East Coast song, and Buble is very much a West Coast guy, born and raised. So extra props to him for jumping in.
But Stan Rogers is well beloved across Canada, be you from beautiful NS (I'm from Halifax), or from equally beautiful BC (I was born there). But I don't care that Buble didn't know all the lyrics, he still was able to keep up with harmonies 🙂 I mean of course he did, he's Michael Buble!
Even us Landlocked in Alberta know Stan Rogers is a Canadian Treasure. Can’t hear Mary Ellen Carter without getting a lump in the throat.
I grew up in Van same time as Boobs. I KNOW me some Stan Rogers.
@@KissesFromCanada what the northwest passage is to folks in BC is like Barrett's Privateer is to Nova Scotians times 10. It's the unofficial anthem ruclips.net/video/rNSYioIvEGw/видео.html
@@1bornconfused922 Right ch'yar 'dere b'y.
I usually watch Steven's monologue before turning in, but since he was interviewing Buble, I decided to watch a bit more of the show. I damned near fell out of bed when he asked Michael if he knew Stan Rogers and had ever heard of Barrett's Privateers. I'm a born and bred Maritimer and lived in Halifax for nine years. Anytime that song is sung in a pub, EVERYONE joins in, singing at the top of their voices and thumping the tables and floorboards. I have been a Stan Rogers fan forever, and remember the sad day when he died in that Air Canada plane fire in Cincinnati back in 1983. Stephen, you have been to New Zealand. I think you should also experience the rare treat of visiting Halifax and joining in a cappella in a crowded pub like the Lower Deck singing a rendition of Barrett's Privateers. I guarantee you won't forget the experience. Cheers!
I was at the Kerrville Folk Festival where Stan made his first and last performance and knocked those Texans clean over the hill at Quiet Valley Ranch. My last impression of Stan was seeing his silhouette through the light of a campfire. He was singing, with tremendous gusto, I Wish I Had A Pencil-Thin Mustache. He had the best time at his appearance at Kerrville and "Kerrverts" all remember and miss him. He got on a plane after that appearance. I remember being told, "Stan Rogers is dead."
Sociable!
THE LOWER DECK HE SAYS, My Dads been doing guys night there for the past 10 years
Wow! Love these comments! I love a good sea shanty!
@@JM-ot8ux His brother Garnet had headed out early on a different flight. Think how he felt when he heard.
Garnet and Stan's son Nathan carry on his legacy. And the Rogers family has a "complicated" family dynamic.
On several RUclips there are videos about the crash landing at the Cincinatti airport. Very interesting.
Thanks for remembering the late GREAT Stan Rogers...he's very much missed. Cannot imagine what the world of music could have been with him in it the last 40 years.
As a Nova Scotian, this interview/duet brought a tear to my eye. 💖
As a huge Stan Rogers fan, and a huge old-school Colbert fan, this made my month. Amazing.
OMG this is one of my favourite maritime shanties from back home in Nova Scotia! And sung by Michael Buble! My day is complete :)
Joanne Thurlow -- My mum was a Pictou County gal! Hugs to you.
I agree. Totally fine with life at this moment.
I mean...semi sung by Buble 🤷♂️
Yes 😍 sung by one of the greatest singers of all time and Michael Buble
🤗from NS
Sea shanties are especially suited for this kind of rough spontaneous performances and stephen’s definitely got the voice for it. This made me smile so much
Mr Colbert, just when I thought you couldn't be any cooler you impressively belt out Barrett's Privateers. You are an honorary Nova Scotian for this! 💙🤍
Agreed!
well as great as this song is, nothing could make stephen colbert cool.
Alestorm covered this song!
Being from Halifax, absolutely ♥️ this song. Sang many times at local pubs!🍺
As our unofficial song, it is a pretty darn good one! I’m a broken man on a Halifax pier, last of Barrett’s privateers….
Me too... I enjoy Buble, Alan Doyle would have been even better. Brings back memories of Peddler’s Pub back in the day
Me too!! I can’t believe they’re talking about it! ❤️❤️
Nova Scotia's National Anthem
@@randyconrad4155 that would be Farewell to Nova Scotia. Although this is up there…
I am a huge Stan fan. It always brings me joy when I discover how far reaching his fans are. Thank you for that #Colbert and # MichaelBuble’.
I love that Stephen uses every chance he gets to geek out with famous people...
Love what you do and be yourself.
Oh my Gosh! Stephen, that was beautiful! We need more sea shanties sung by you.
Never comment, but that is one of my favourites and so unexpected to hear. Thanks Stephen.
Yet another Nova Scotian living far from home.
Yet again... Stephen has some pipes and singing chops. Nice Shanty
My goodness I love a bit of Buble. Love the song. Also I remember that Colbert literally had a joke about a sea shanty and a few weeks later it was all the rave on tik tok. (C-bear kept me sane during the pandy.) Whether bc of him or a coinkydink, he was early! ♥
Michael and Stephen dueting on a sea shanty was the gift I didn't know I needed today.
Great singing duet, we need more singing on the show, with Jon Batiste another super talented musician!
My oh my that sent goosebumps up and down my spine. And a smile on my face.
Im from Halifax NS..and Stan Rogers is a legend here in the Maritimes.
When you sang Barretts Privateers..I loved it.
It was a grest episode..as fellow Canadian Michael Buble was on your show!!
You looked like you loved singing that song Mr. Colbert!!
Fantastic job Stephen - what a natural. Made my day! Thanks for bringing this great sea shanty from the great Stan Rogers to us.
Thank you Stephen Colbert for honouring our treasure, Stan Rogers.
That was beautiful! Stephen needs to sing more on the show!
Omg!! I’m Canadian and I LOVE Barrett’s Privateer!! Ahhh I can’t believe Colbert sang that 😍. Best video ever!! Ahh!!!
Yay! I'm from Halifax NS, and grew up on Stan Rogers' music. 💖🎶🌊
Love this song. Thank you! As a Canadian I've sang/danced to this song in pubs all over our country. This is great!
I'm a admirer of sea shanties, have been for a few decades, and anytime they are sung and sung well it makes my day. Listening to Stephen's fine voice just adds an extra level of bliss. Thank you!
OMG one of my favorite Canadian Artist and my favorite song...Thanks
Wow, being from Halifax, NS, and spending much time in Privateers Wharf, this is amazing! A great ole shanty it is
What a wonderful duet of a sea shanty😘😘. Thank you for this🙏🏼
"Micky Boobs" is too cute! I saw this guy in concert and his is a funny personality as well as one of the best voices I've heard. His duet with Jon Batiste is amazing! 💝
I'm an expat living in the US the last 30 years. I had a buddy 20 years younger than myself and occasionally we would have a few and listen to music. We were both military and history nerds and I told him of this song I grew up with back home. I happened to have "Signal Hill Live at the Lower Deck" in my collection. They had a cover of Barrett's and he absolutely loved it! (he also liked that the Americans won, lol). I did get him onto Stan before I lost him and somewhere in Northern Virginia, his peeps are listening to it now.
Anyway, the point is I was so happy this American dude knew and loved it. We often sang it at parties to great enjoyment because no one heard it before and all thought it was super cool. Now to find Colbert is hip to it, really blows my mind.
I love sea shanties, thanks to Stephen. That was amazing from both Stephen and Michael! I loved Michael's harmony!
I think this was the most fun Stephen's had since having Merry and Pippin on!
Him and Anna Kendrick is a fucking.....wow!
Hey Stephen! Give a knock on my door and we'll take a spin out to the shore to visit some of the places mentioned in Stan's massive catalog. From the Queensport light, to Sherbrooke, to the Halifax pier. Give me a shout!
I picture mr. Colbert on his boat singing away sound carries well across water and in water for that matter,Stan Rogers has been remembered thank you for this moment in time.
Seeing Michael Buble always brings back fond memories of the Babalu Lounge in Vancouver where Michael and his band played Saturday nights. Place was always packed and it was always a great night.
I died with this! Stephen has been wanting to belt sea shanty songs for like 2 years now. So happy he finally got his wish🤣🤣🤣
I want a buble & Colbert album of seashantys
As a Canadian who who was born and raised on the East Coast and is a HUGE fan of Stan Rogers I'm BLOWN AWAY that Stephen knows him!
Although my favourite (
Canada's unofficial national anthem, Northwest Passage.
And I wonder how many Americans know what a purse seiner is? I do!
I don't think there are many of them here on the East Coast.
it makes me so happy to see him sing this with a lost Vancouver singer. Come to the Harbour! we will show you a good time.
Loving hearing our Canadian Maritime National Anthem being sung Stephen and Michael . Well done lads . Lord thundering Jaysus , today's St. Patrick's Day , and yous are singing Barrett's Privateers , I feel like I need a drink lol . Sláinte and greetings from The Canadian Maritimes ☘💚☘
I saw Stan Rogers ON Saint Patricks Day WITH Ryans Fancy! Stan opened the show at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium. I told Dennis Ryan that when I met him years later. There is a beautiful framed photograph
of Stan just inside the entrance to the hall. You must see it when you are here.
@@michaelrmurphy2734 Wow , what a night that must've been eh 😀
Ah, Barrett's. Usually sung at any given bar in Halifax at least once a night, with the whole bar joining in. "Sociable!" Cheers fr Halifax... and Slainte, since we're St Patrick's Day today.
OMG! I lived in Halifax for 15 years and I remember many a time I participated in a crowd of people singing Barrett's Privateers usually at the Lower Deck, and I completely forgot about "Socialable". Good Memories!
Everyone in Halifax (myself included) is flipping their shit right now!!! Time to drop by the Lower Deck ❤️
HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOK NOW!
This should help with tourism in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada 🇨🇦. Michael Bublé has performed there a number of times.
Come to Halifax sometime and hit up a pub, you’re guaranteed to hear Barrett’s Privateers!
Good to hear a Stan Rogers song. He's been gone since '83 after dying in an airplane fire in Cincinnati. Great songwriter.
Colbert had a blast!!
As a Cape Bretoner, this makes my heart sing! Thank u Stephen! And Bubble, youre Canadian, would think you’d know this class Stan Rogers tune! Shame shame
It isn't often that Michael Buble gets outsung, Colbert was feeling the great Stan Rogers
Stephen Colbert is a national hero.
Love Buble! So proud he is from my home town Burnaby 🇨🇦just outside of Vancouver. Same city as Michael J Fox. We are so blessed to have both Michaels!
Fellow Burnabarian here! Always nice to see Canadians represent.
What? And not ME?!
It is a remarkable story about he and his grandfather. He used to sing while he was aboard the ships. Ex: When he was working in the galley etc. it was clear that Bublé didn’t know the song as well and yet he pulled out harmonies and tempo changes and inflections on key with Mr. Colbert that were incredible! I don’t know if you guys understand how hard that is as a singer to be able to follow along on a song like that and do proper harmonies. It was really impressive! Also Mr. Colbert sounded great!
I too love sea shanties. I'll never forget the time when I was deep in to Assassin's Creed Black Flag and loving the shanties there, only to hear Stephen talk about them (and sing one/have one on the show here) soon thereafter. Good times.
An album is needed with these two! Loved this!❤️🕊🌈🍀😇🙏❣️
Yes, yes, yes!
Love this so much. As a Nova Scotian who moved to the US (Happily married for 5 years to a guy I met on Final Fantasy years ago >^.~
I live in Halifax 🤯
I've drank to this song a billion times at the Lower Deck and Split Crow
"We have to sing Barrett's Privateers at least 3 times a night. " - Every pub band in Halifax -
Stephen Colbet, he's the greatest! Every time i watch i love him more, amazing human being!
Wow as a Halifax, Nova Scotia girl this was soul-enriching! Bravo!
Sang along with every word, I’m from Truro NS ❤️
So did I...
And I'm from Port Hardy, BC
So...we couldn't get more distant without getting closer together
Oh my god! Amazing!!!
Ha ha ha!! I am smiling and laughing for joy!! Thank you!!
I'm from Halifax, Nova Scotia. This really made my day :) Stephen did a damn good job!
That was sooooo good!
Why is Stephen such a great singer? Daaaamn! 👏👏👏👏
I think my life is complete now. The best version I've ever heard was Jack White in concert in Halifax, and he closed with Barrett's Privateers. I would give anything to have a recording of it!!
LUCKY. That must have been amazing!
Like White Stripes Jack White? Awesome...
@@stevesmith9447 it was amazing!!
@@PedroSteckecilo Yup, that Jack White. He has roots here in the maritimes, he came to investigate them a few years ago and did an impromptu performance at a bar downtown. I still kick myself for not trying to go when I heard about it!!
And you know Jack White HAS done a version of Barrett's Privateers WITH Stephen on the show! Just search here on RUclips.
Holy cow I didn’t think anyone knew that song out of the Maritime region of Canada! Amazing to hear it get air time
I fucking love that song! Have yet to discover other songs by Stan Rogers, but I fell head over heels for Barrit's Privateers from the very first listen. It's fantastic 👏😄
Steve is a national treasure! 👌
Can we hear NORTHWEST PASSAGE next time?
While Stan's family were from the Canso area, in Nova Scotia, he and his brother Garnet, who is a wonderful songwriter as well, grew up in the suburbs of Hamilton, Ontario. I always felt that it was Stan's final album, a song cycle about the Great lakes, called FROM FRESH WATERS, that was his best work.
Oh brings a tear to this Canadian's eye WELL DONE!!!
This was a great interview. Michael Bublé is adorable.... and don't sleep on Stephen's vocal skills… the. man can sing!
Omg! If I was there I’d be singing along too!
We need more Colbert Shanty's!
The late, great Stan Rogers wanted a sea shanty of his own to sing, so he wrote one... "gddamn them all, I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold - we'd fire no guns, shed no tears. But I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier, the last of Barrett's privateers. " Slainte Stan!
I nearly fell off the couch when I heard this coming from my TV on Wednesday night. One interesting thing I picked up from watching the video is that Stephen doesn't say the original words "God damn them all." He says "Oh damn them all." I wonder if he learned that from someone other than Stan or he just changed it so he wouldn't get complaints from the Christian right. The first time I think Michael was just taking a breath, so he doesn't say anything for that word, and the second time it's hard to hear what Michael says.
This song is a hidden history lesson. Like what the group Sabaton does.
@@1401minstrel as a practicing Catholic, he probably doesn’t want to take the Lords name in vain.
@@evelynsaungikar3553 Maybe, but I come from a family of practicing Catholics too, and we've broken the second commandment frequently.
@@1401minstrel Hmmm. Well, I don’t think it’s because he is concerned about a backlash from the fundies. He’s said and done worse.
*cries with Nova Scotian pride*
I absolutely loved Michael and Stephen singing that song. Why don’t they record this. I love this style of song. It has a lilt, rhythm like nothing else. Please please collaborate and record this song, live with audience and give dollars to Ukraine. Hands across the water. I would definitely, buy and share with friends to help raise dollars.
Oh my, yes. I was thinking how great it would be if the two of them put together an album of shanties. I'd buy it in a heartbeat! And their voices are perfect together for this kind of song. Not a bad idea to use it to raise money for Ukraine.
Love the song. And Mr. Colbert has a fine voice.
Also Nova Scotia and so very proud to hear this classic on your show Stephen!!!! greetings from Halifax.
Aw this makes me so happy because one of the few things that I enjoyed and retained from school here in Canada was learning about Stan Rogers and his ballad called White Squall. I had to buy it on iTunes to listen to it and it became one of my favourite songs.
I saw this on RUclips and loved it. I an a fan of Stan Rogers music and fell in love with his voice.
Wow!!! I am from and in Halifax right now!!!!! I have sung that song over many a draft at the Lower Deck!!! SOCIABLE!!! Bravo Stephen Cobert!!!
Live in Dundas where Stan lived for some time...heard Ryan's Fancy sing this in St. John's years ago...well done Stephen in acknowledging this great talent
I’ve been watching Colbert for so long I feel like he’s my uncle or something. He’s hilarious, genuine, authentic and he has improved the world through comedy. Thanks, Steven. (My grandfather’s name, and thus my middle name!)
We're clapping my hands yeh love that song
Absolutely brilliant!! Stan Rogers was a legend. You should have his son Nathan Rogers on the show. Thank you for this!!!
One of my favorites songs EVER!!!
I love this so much because you can tell it wasn’t rehearsed!
now I want a sea shanty album from Michael bublé... how weird is that? :D
🤣
How about one from Colbert??
Love sea shanties. Love Stan Rogers. Live Barrets Privateers. Love Stephen.
Wonderful. Just wonderful. Thanks.
Happy St. Patrick's Day, Stephen 🙏☘😇💚🇮🇪
Halifax Nova Scotia, the city I live in. Loved it
I love Michael Buble, He is a very talented musician. I cannot wait to get his new album which is coming soon.
As a Canadian Folk Music fan, this was a surprising treat. I wonder if Colbert knows Great Big Sea.
A total trip would be Bubes and Stephen doing the Log Drivers Waltz.
YES!! But they would need costumes....
This suggestion took my breath away for a moment.
In French!
I still remember that animated video they did of it back in the 70s
Colbert should make his way to the Stan Rogers Folk Festival in Canso some year....Well done every year.
That was awesome🥰
LOL @ “way ahead on this one”! We used to sing these in the 1980s, along with a lot of Leslie Fish. 🫡
Stan Rogers is a legend that was gone to soon. Marry Ellen Carter and Last Christmas are also masterpieces!
Both are so amazing with the song Barrett's Privateers !! Love this interview !!
