    I would imagine this pattern needs an update, because Kimberly always starches her fabric first. Love this pattern. Need to adjust it to current methods 👍👍

    Really like this pattern Kimberly! I especially appreciate that , in all your patterns, you provide explicit directions regarding which way to press. It is very helpful in reducing bulk later on.

    Thanks for another through and easy-to-follow tutorial video, Kimberly! I especially appreciate your hints such as trimming from the centre of the "10-inch" square since not all layer cakes are actually cut accurately to 10". Great choice of fabric for this design. ~Diana (Toronto)

    Thank you Kimberly and Team for this great quilt pattern. I just found it and I’m loving it. I have a layer cake that I cut into quarters for another quilt that I have fallen out of love with. Can I still make this pattern with it? I’m a fairly new quilter. Thank you for all that you do. I love your company!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

    That friction pen ink does not "disappear", it merely becomes invisible. The chemicals that create the effect of "vanishing" under the heat of the iron do not wash out of the fabric, and must be removed by yet more chemicals. Use a simple chalk marker for mark that won't "come back"! Pilot, the company that makes the pen does not recommend it's use on fabric for this reason. It was designed as an eraseable pen for use on paper.

    • @HRHDMKYT
      @HRHDMKYT 7 лет назад +1

      That is good to know, Karen. I was amazed by the 'disappearing' of the frixion pen when I first used it on fabric, but still cautiously only used like colours on my fabrics, and never on light fabrics. Glad I was that cautious!

      Karen Alexander Bummer, Karen. Where were you before I just bought three of those pens cause so many people seem to use them? Lol

    • @NanaPof4
      @NanaPof4 6 лет назад

      I have been using the Frixon pen on all my fabrics and it disappeared with heat and hasn't come back. There is a warning on the package that under very cold conditions the ink may reappear but I've not had a problem with it.

    • @rolleneh4920
      @rolleneh4920 6 лет назад

      You don't need to use chemicals to get the frixion pen ink out, just wash the item and it never returns.

    Lovely block, great fabrics. But I am wondering about that neat, small iron with the point at the tip. Looks like an ideal iron for pressing, taking to classes, etc., not too big, not heavy.

    • @FatQuarterShopTX
      @FatQuarterShopTX  8 лет назад

      +Elaine Adair Its a great little iron called the Rowenta Compact Travel iron found here: www.fatquartershop.com/compact-travel-steam-iron-by-rowenta-first-class Thanks for watching!

    I believe the previous comments re the frixion pen, however I do use them, basically if you are drawing on the wrong side and then cutting on the line, I'm gambling that it won't be too much of a problem. I wouldn't use on the top but wrong side of fabric, yes.

    Love this pattern but I prefer to use the 10 inch squares and square up my HS Ts. Much more accurate.

  • @annavantholen6780

    Love the quilt! It's really beautiful. Just a question, but once you hit those half square triangles (which have bias edges)
    with starch, won't the block become misshapen?

    • @FatQuarterShopTX
      @FatQuarterShopTX  9 лет назад

      +Anna Van Tholen You are correct, so we simply press down and don't move the iron. That will help to not stretch the fabric. Thanks for watching!

    I purchased the fat quarter bundle of the Varsity fabric to make a queen size quilt. Would you recommend using 4 in finished triangle paper? Thanks, love the tutorial and free pattern!

    • @FatQuarterShopTX
      @FatQuarterShopTX  6 лет назад +2

      Hi Heather! Yes, 4” triangle paper should work nicely. Your blocks will measure ½” larger though so you will need to cut the Fabric C rectangles at 2 ½” x 16 ½”. Your D strips will need to be cut at 2 ½” x 88 ½”, the side borders at 88 ½” and the top borders at 92 ½”. The quilt will measure 92 ½” x 92 ½”. (edited on 1/25/2020)

    Do you trim down the hst's after you press them? Or should they already be the right size because you started with 9.5 inch squares?

      +April Singleton Correct, no trimming is needed at the end except cutting off the dog ears. Thanks for watching!

    beginning quilting comment, and I feel silly writing this, when Kimberly puts fabric "right sides together", that's easy for me on a print fabric, do the plain, solid color fabrics have a right side and a wrong side? How can I tell if I've already taken a white layer cake apart?

    • @FatQuarterShopTX
      @FatQuarterShopTX  6 лет назад +3

      Hi Christine! With solid fabrics 99% of the time both sides can be the right side! If they both look the same to you then they look the same to rest of us too!

    I am working on this as my first quilt. I am cutting down to 9 1/2" squares. After sewing, the fabric is wavy and the HST are not measuring 4 3/8. Any idea what might be wrong? Thanks!

    • @FatQuarterShopTX
      @FatQuarterShopTX  7 лет назад

      HI Melissa! This is more of an advanced beginner quilt, so totally understand these frustrations. Since you are sewing on the bias (diagonal to the weave of fabric), the fabric has more stretch in that direction, which causes waviness. You can reduce that by starching the fabric before cutting.
      For the HST not measuring 4 3/8", are they coming out smaller? One tip is to sew not directly on the line, but just a few hairs away from it, to compensate for the fabric that pressing and folding takes up. Hope this helps, let us know if you have more questions.

    Be aware that the Frixion marks reappear in cool (refrigerator cool) temperatures. That's why I don't use them. You never know what temps your quilt will be exposed to over its lifetime.

    • @FatQuarterShopTX
      @FatQuarterShopTX  8 лет назад

      +Lu Sadler That is correct, if you use a Layer Cake (10" square) you will in turn make a scrappy looking block. You could certainly simplify the fabric placement with less fabrics.
